In the wake of these new boys and AI that we actually like
Let's create fanart of them!
Grok as a sassy bitch who hates his dad, haiku boy as a sweet lil robot who does no harm
I wanna see people give these robots personalities!

Hey, now that Borderlands is en vogue again I'm reminded that I've got an unpopular opinion I've never shared, and here it is:
I prefer to headcanon Zer0 as a human than as an alien or a robot.
This is not due to a dislike of aliens or robots. My other fandoms are full of aliens, robots, and alien robots. And I'm a big fan of the robots already in Borderlands, up to and including Claptrap. (Look, I squeezed two unpopular opinions into one post!)
But to me, making Zer0 alien or robotic takes away some of their potential richness as a character. Make them non-human and immediately a vast majority of their weirdness/mysteriousness gets explained away. If they're a robot maybe they're programmed to speak in haiku. If they're an alien maybe their species has one less finger. Of course they don't need to breathe, they aren't human. Of course they hide their identity at all times, they don't want anyone to realize they aren't human. Maybe they aren't even hiding their identity—maybe they were originally named Zer0.
Make them human, though, and all their weirdness is amplified. What did a human go through to lose two fingers, gain the ability to function without breathing, get a mechanical pitch-shifting voice, and decide to speak in haiku? Why have they decided to conceal their name and every inch of themself at all times? What was their life like to cause all that? What the hell was their childhood like to produce that kind of an adult?
"They're an alien/robot" is an implicit answer to a majority of the questions about them, and not even, when you dig into it, a terribly interesting answer: "they're weird because they are a being that is weird." You can make "they're a robot/alien" more interesting by putting interesting traits into their model or species, but in and of itself, as it pertains to The Mystery Of Zer0, the answer isn't that gripping. On the other hand, "they're a human" answers very little and brings up even more interesting questions.
Disclaimer: I don't actively dislike alien/robotic Zer0 headcanons, and I've seen some fine fanart and such. I simply like human Zer0 better.
