We’re in one of the oldest fandoms where the canon itself is long lost and the source materials for us to draw inspiration from are those of the earliest fanfics themselves—two of which being commonly accepted as beta canon due to their top quality. Sometimes these fanfics contradict each other due to all sorts of OOCs and inconsistencies which is forcing us to choose our own sources to rely on to draw fanart and write fanfics. Each generation of fanfic writers are introducing more headcanons in their works and sometimes their fanfics of fanfics become so popular that they are prompting new sub-fandoms to emerge, inspiring more people to draw fanart and write fanfics for these fanfics of fanfics. It’s almost as if there is a family tree of fanfics and we’re now reaching the third generation and beyond

I’m crying WHY would you word it like this
Tumblr media
Someone put me in the room with the publishing execs that keep mandating that every book be marketed with increasingly meaningless and contradictory comp titles, I just wanna have a chat

People who are like “Omg gen z theatre kids only know *proceeds to list every single musical that came out after 1999*” are the most annoying assholes like hey maybe we just don’t like shit from the 1960’s or we have specific tastes have you ever considered that

Long story short I dislike most modern retellings because they seem to be focused on "fixing" the ancient stories and breaking them to fit into their own moral box which is insanely self centered to me and hardly ever actually engages with the stories as they are

INFODUMP TIME!!!
So a few weeks or so ago me and my friend @likesaly were discussing Hadestown and we accidentally created a modern/influencer AU and it’s been rotating in my head ever since
Ignore if some things are a little out of character. I do not care because this is me being self indulgently cringey
Minor spoilers and a few (vague) NSFW references under the cut
-Eurydice
Eurydice is a tumblr girlie, and we all know it I fear. She posts a lot of outfit stuff that accidentally gets reposted to Pinterest. She also, often shit talks Hades on tumblr and screenshots his twitter posts and reuploads them onto here and just calls him a bitch. These ALSO get reposted onto Pinterest.
I don’t think she particularly falls under any specific alt genre, but falls into TikTok’s “Dommy mommy” cliche because of the black dress and combat boots.
She frequently posts about stupid shit Orpheus is doing and then later updates on how he somehow made the entire house smell like mangos (he made ramen with monster instead of water)
Definitely semi popular blog on tumblr
-Orpheus
He posts about playing guitar on TikTok! However, this has accidentally caused the issue of his TikTok comments being filled with:
“Weird way to propose”
“Omg his hands”
And on and on. You know the comments
Anyways, he later posted a video with Eurydice and mentioned that they were dating in the caption and instead got the:
“I hate couples being happy”
“I hope y’all find out you’re cousins”
Comments. Orpheus cannot win
He makes random food combos on occasion, Eurydice hates him for this one. She will always willingly try it but also hates that he keeps making the house smell like disgustingly sweet fruit or just burnt.
-Hades
Posts about his shit politics takes (likely higher up in politics standpoints. Idk I don’t pay attention) and his wife, that’s it
Him and Eurydice are always in a weird cross platform fight between twitter and tumblr
Eurydice posted a photo of Orpheus once and he screenshotted it and reposted it with the caption
“Why is your boyfriend a wet rag of a man”
-Persephone
Runs an Instagram page about plants, except when you check her story it’s always about something that happened while she was drunk
Calls hades out on why he needs to stop the capitalism twitter page
He won’t listen
Her and Eurydice post photos together sometimes!
Hermes:
That one guy who goes stupidly popular once every 3 months for posting a stupidly funny video
Doesn’t spend much time on social media, but when he does he’s viral for 3 weeks

Rodgers and Hammerstein knew how to write a good melody. I don't know what they put in their songs, but that's beautiful, stirring stuff.

I think my favorite character troupe is the failed hero. The failed hero is typically conventionally attractive and overly prideful but lacks emotional constitution and physical endurance. He is pathetic, but still strangely endearing. The failed hero has some kind of idea that he thinks will save/change the world/his community. He is rediculously mediocre, but he thinks that he'll be the guy. He fails monstrously at the beginning of the story, and the rest of the plot follows his unraveling and eventual demise. In the end, he accomplished nothing. He didn't move the world to a better or worse place. He wanted to be a hero, but made no impact. None. Meanwhile his life is ruined and his entire career is squandered. While the failed hero hasn't impacted the greater community, he has thrown his life into disarray and will never recover. He will continue to suffer until his timely and anticlimactic death.

greatest greek tragedy featuring ghost and soap as orpheus and eurydice.
ghost goes to retrieve soap from the underworld and he’s allowed to leave but he can’t look back but soap is everything and more to him and he has to know he has to know that soap is still there and will be with him and he crosses the threshold and breathes a sigh of relief and he finally looks back but —
soap hadn’t crossed yet. and they lock eyes for only a moment until ghost has to watch soap be taken from him again.
and he’ll never get him back.

Something that I find baffling about the girlbossification of Greek Mythology is that people don't even bother finding the right myths to work with anymore. It's insane because so much of it is tied to always seeing womanhood as victimhood under the patriarchy, but they don't even bother picking the women whose lives legitimately suck!
Like, why are you making Eurydice, a woman whose myth is about being loved beyond death, unloved? Why are you making Circe, powerful immortal sorceress with a wholeass domain, be tricked and used and abused? Why are you making Penelope not want to see her husband come home? Why are you making Ariadne not the mastermind of Theseus' escape, why are you making her then ending up with Dionysus a bad thing?
That's not what any of those characters are about! Yes, they all suffer at some point or another, and they are generally not the protagonists of their own stories, but those are myths thousands of years old. What are you expecting? What are we gaining, what are we actually saying, by carving out the good parts of these characters lives and only making it about how it sucks to be a woman?
What about Iphigenia? Cassandra? Clytemnestra? Echo? Calisto? There is no shortage of raped and abused and just generally fucked over women in GREEK MYTHOLOGY.
This is FAR from the biggest problem with the girlboss retelling genre, don't get me wrong, but I do find it funny that they can't even pick the right myth.

Hades hires IMP
(Hades glares down at Millie and Blitzo standing before his desk.)
Hades: What? Why…? Who are these creatures? (types on computer) This is an error. According to Google, these guys seem to be from a show based on Christian myth…
Hermes: (leafing through paperwork) … Hmmm. Oh! Yeah. Oops. This appears to be a "voice actor confusion"…
Hades: (raises brow) A what?
Hermes: Ugh, this happened last week, too, I delivered a copy of the Handbook for the Recently Deceased to one of their kind that seemed to be juggling dildos…
Blitzo: Hey, Mr. Greek Royal Big Man, you need any hits on anyone?
Millie: Blitz, you really think this is a good idea…?
Blitzo: Quiet, Millie, everyone in the tri-afterlife area knows this guy is fucking loaded!
Hades: (purses lips) I'm not really in the business of killing mortals, I just collect and judge the ones that have…
Millie: Sorry to bother you, Your--
Hades: Although…! There is one mortal, Sisyphus, who keeps trying to avoid his fate. I suppose I could be convinced to compensate you handsomely if you manage to bring him into me…
Blitzo: DONE!
