What if Hades switched pantheons au? Chinese and Greek Mythology crossover.

So, a Drabble for a fanfic idea (messy at the start but smoothes out a bit as you go) Basically Hades as the god of wealth over in the chinese pantheon, I’ve seen a few fanfics of different gods in different pantheons- either as a new deity or replacing another, so figured I’d give it a shot. The idea outline is below, warning that it’s a bit long.

Hades becomes Cai Shen.

Basically, Cai Shen has a whole lot of different origin stories, but not gonna list them all bc im sleepy. But one main origin story for the mythology was where he was originally an underworld deity, but then the Jade emperor one day came by and decided to give him a change of career, making him the god of wealth. He had a few names (Cai Shen, Zhao Gongming, Zhao (forgot since my original paragraph deleted itself) Fang Li, Li Guizi). Basically, main conception was that he was a plague deity due to whole loads of confusing stuff -> Underworld god then changed to wealth god.

Even though I don’t mention Hades’s interactions in the chinese pantheon very much in this, the entire beginning will mostly focus on Hades leaving his home pantheon, his journey across the world (and interactions with other pantheons), then adjusting -> life in the beginning in the new pantheon, his job duties + making new acquaintances and friends there. He’ll also cross paths with Sun Wu Kong before and during the journey to the west events.

(Brief info behind this Drabble, so skip paragraph if you wanna move on)

Will need to research the different eras, myths and specific things for each culture before I begin tho. Clarification: won’t be any bashing in this, the aim is just to make them not one dimension yknow? For this im just having the gods be like randomly generated in character customization, no dna so ppl can have wild features- like hestia straight up has gold eyes or flame for hair, Poseidon grew fish webbing eventually, Hera has kaleidoscope eyes, Demeter’s darker then most of her siblings, etc. So for the sake of this being easy transition hades has more typical Chinese features in his human form.

Side information for au: underworld time runes differently- either like a minute in real world is an hour down there or smth. gods need worship to keep age, immortality, youth, etc. So if Hades stayed the god of the underworld he would’ve been immortal sure, but he didn’t get prayers- didn’t have a big fan base, so it would’ve been a slow rot, decaying over the years while his siblings remained beautiful. So, Hades knows he would’ve become twisted over the years, bitter, and he’d likely isolate himself even more. He didn’t want that.

but basically canon divergence time from when domains were handed out, even after being pretty much blackmailed into taking the underworld (bc if he didn’t then he’d have no domain, die a mortal and just be a prisoner there instead) it was sad times.

So how he gets there can go two ways:

1. Hades refused the underworld entirely, since it was better to enjoy the years he’d have (even if short) and die as a mortal, than to live forever tortured and decay. So, he leaves after the chat with Zeus, and goes on a world journey. He goes on a few adventures, and word of him gets around- to the point even the Jade emperor turns his gaze upon him. So, he’s intrigued, and puts a few challenges in his path. Afterwards when Hades manages to complete it, the Jade emperor brings him up to the heavens for a discussion. Hades pretty much explains his life story, and too impressed and doesn’t want to waste an opportunity, Jade emperor offers a job. They had a vacant spot for the fifth god of wealth. Which leads to Hades accepting, and thus- was made a god again, youth restored. Though the name had to go, too much associated with it, so he was renamed Cai Shen.

2. Hades took the underworld since he felt he had no choice- and didn’t want to die after a few years, so better have immortality then none. After the Titanomachy the Greeks invite the other pantheons over- since new change in management, but then Jade emperor took a look at hades and was like ??? Yo?? He’s fine af?? Hates his job? Do I have a solution for you- So basically Hades gets sniped by those guys and transfers companies- gets the god of wealth domain. Then gets a name change too bc he gotta fit in, and then is Caishen woo. It’s pretty fun, no one talks down to him or anything, foods pretty good, win win.

So Jade emperor passes him a rod, turns stone to gold, fun perks. + with new domain he gets additional powers (lucky he already had the affinity for the earth) so his body can generate jewels and stuff, then for the sake of a future bullying hades arc his tears can generate diamonds.

Now, his family thinks him dead, since it was done in the down low the switch. (They thought he had aged and died a mortal since he had no divine domain, as the general consensus was that Hades quit doing the underworld and figured he’ll just enjoy his couple decades then die)

But like man, when he’s just in his own palace, doing his taxes, he’s like, man. Wonder what my siblings are doing, haven’t seen them in a while. So insert that one meme where a guy comes in with pizza and sees the whole room on fire. Safe to say it hasn’t been going too good, since he quit his job someone else had to take it (and like, no one wanted to take it, so theres no underworld god- but we will get back to this later). Thus while titans are like still chained up in Tartarus, every single dead soul- can just wander around. Bunch of ghosts all over Greece, and most action against them is either smiting them to oblivion or shooing them back in, then they get out again after a couple years. It’s just not manageable.

Thanatos is still around, but his only job is to take souls to the underworld yknow, let people die. He ain’t dealing with the rest he’s not a babysitter, so cue him and Hypnos napping together.

And Hades / Caishen is like ??? Uh. You live like this?? Tho he doesn’t interact with them yet. Demeter ain’t having a fun time, has to stomp zombie heads back into the earth for fertilizer. Poseidon just shrugs, he has a bunch of ghosts and skeletons in his ocean so cue Davy jones mention in a couple millennia. Anyway, lot of discontent on Olympus, Bitterness, etc. Hestia is more downtrodden, she just sits by her hearth. Yes she’s loving when visited, but she does miss her brother. Then the biggest factor that Hades saw that shocked him: was like how unrecognizable Poseidon was.

As a youth, Poseidon was so sweet, he was nice and overall fun to be around. Sure he had mood swings occasionally, but that was normal- Hades loved him either way. They were close. But the older Poseidon? He was cold, he no longer saw those lively eyes. (Hint: Poseidon and Zeus still don’t get along here. Especially since Poseidon blames Zeus for his favorite brothers death). So, even as much as Hades wants to go and talk to him- he holds himself back. He figured Poseidon would just be angry with him.

(Now filling in plot hole time ig) Anyway, he’s doing his best- but Poseidon always gains like the title where he’s pretty much the equivalent to the god of the dead, he doesn’t let the souls that die in his sea go to the underworld since he knows they’d just escape, so he just keeps them down here- either put in a cave or become merfolk. So that begins a tradition to do funerals in the ocean, so the sea god can give you another life or smth.

Then Hades is like, aight, can either do two routes: Hades decides hmmmm, maybe he should get involved, thus leading him to basically decide he’ll just commute from each pantheon every day. Get the souls back in the underworld, so some real estate and fix it up, then yeah kingship. Or other route, still very much scarred from his time in the underworld and he’s focusing on self care, he’s like, yeah- no, he’ll just let them continue on- and let’s Poseidon just be the god of the dead pretty much for watery graves.

He heads home, thinks on it, then calls up his main friend- the Jade emperor

Then for fun sake, since it’s been ages and siblings probably don’t even remember or care for him, he figured he’ll just keep going as Cai Shen and visit the Greeks- saying he’s just doing a vacation. Though just in case, we’ll give him a weimao to cover his face so he doesn’t get bothered. And like, while visitor is neat they don’t pay mind to him. So, he visits the mortal land in the Hellenistic pantheons territory- though the sight of all ghosts eventually gets to him. Guilt even though he knows it isn’t so wrong. Eventually he’s basically an exorcist, sending all of the lamenting souls on land to the underworld (probably the chinese one since he has some jurisdiction there, or over to the sea so Poseidon can take care of it)

So this goes on for a while, when he isn’t doing his job in his territory, he’s visiting his homeland. He has some interactions with other gods there as Caishen, but doesn’t advertise himself as actual family. He does want to, and his heart aches when he sees his siblings and nieces and nephews. He missed much, but he remembers it’s for the best- he won’t live his entire life in misery and alone. So he attends some events on Olympus when he’s invited (as are other pantheons), though he’s like on edge. He can sense eyes on him but no clue where.

Short story: Poseidon has been on edge for centuries when he heard Cai Shen speak. Even if he couldn’t see the face during events, he remembered that voice. Since he thought the real Hades dead and soul dissolved, his idea is that it was shapeshifting. Didn’t get any confirmation on the face till he one day saw Cai Shen without the veil, having put a child ghost to sea so they could be reborn. And with all of the guilt, longing and anger Poseidon stills feels to this day, this set him off.

Poseidon had seen him without the veil. He remembers that face anywhere, he remembers that face holding him when they were trapped in flesh, he remembers that face when they had run on the shoreline for the first time- he remembers that voice teasing him, he remembers- he remembers- it’s not fair. Did Cai Shen take the remnants of Hades soul and consume him, taking his form? Or did one just see him all those years ago when he was last spotted and decide to take his body? Steal his brothers face? Disrespect his dead brothers corpse like this? Take his voice?

How dare he?

So, Cai Shen unknowingly earned himself the hatred and wrath of his brother who thinks him dead. I love misunderstandings. Thus, it leads to a clash. It’s brutal and bloody, and they both end up tattered and drenched in golden ichor. They’re bruised and hurting. Poseidon is so angry, he’s so damn pissed, this entire thing is damning. Eventually it leads to when weapons are dropped from exhausting, they’re on the ground unable to move, does the talking begin. And he can’t stand it, hearing that voice, it’s not fair. Why does he sound like that? And he hates himself for listening to it, and eventually he can’t help the tears as he crawls over just to try and get the voice to stop- to end the fake, it’s the least he can do.

But he’s hugged, even when his hands grip the other man’s skin so hard he could tear it off, and Hades/Cai Shen explains. It starts off with a pre-Titanomachy memory, then moments during it, then the final words he said to Poseidon before he became Cai Shen. And Poseidon couldn’t even deny it any longer. Thus they talk, he wheels, they hug.

Anyway then it’s pretty much some bonding time. So Poseidon is in a better mood than he has been for centuries, to the point it’s noticeable to other gods, cue eye squint. Zeus is even more suspicious when Poseidon doesn’t insult or yell at him during a meeting, instead just carrying on- not paying any mind to him. Now mind goes to the worst here, flashbacks to like the coup against Zeus, so he decides to investigate. He gets a man on the job, Hermes, to start investigating. He knows his son can be sneaky.

But Hera then notices Zeus’s behavior, cue eye squint. She suspicious, even more so when he has Hermes do jobs for him in the mortal world, and then lie to her about it when she threatened him into a wall. So, she gets a woman on the job, Iris, to start investigating. Cue Hermes and Iris pointing spider man meme when they both catch each other. Anyway leads to them just sitting on a building and complaining about their bosses, and overall just what’s going on.

Hermes is like Uncles not fighting with Father so this means he’s definitely planning something. And iris just sighs, like Hera sent her to spy on Hermes who’s spying for Zeus to spy on Poseidon, it’s an annoying affair. Then by coincidence sake, they both see Poseidon having a meeting with Bai Chen. Now what?? What’s a wealth deity of another pantheon doing with Poseidon? Doesn’t make sense.

So leads to both Hermes and Iris spying on the occasion, trying to figure out what’s going on. Two main ideas they have is that 1. Poseidons getting some funds from the chinese pantheon to start planning a coup, thus implicating that the other pantheon is trying to dethrone Zeus and get Poseidon as king - or plan an entire takeover using Poseidon as the stepping stone. Then idea 2. Poseidon trying to get laid. Simple.

Both find these ideas very plausible.

End here since I doubt anyone will even read to this point, and I’ll work on figuring out how the rest would go.

Now depending on my feelings, the romance. I am not a personal fan of it, but I do read it. Now, don’t hate me, but all of the interpretations, constant stream of them - overuse of the trope, vilification of Demeter, has led me to not be a big fan of Hades/ Persephone in mythology stories. (I mean mythology ver of them, all good for them in religion, so I pray they don’t smite me). Thus, no romance of them here. It’ll hopefully be just a Gen story, though with all of the ideas I have for Poseidon it could possibly end with them together? No clue yet. But overall, aiming for Gen story.

Shall name this, Pantheon switch au. So any future stuff related to this will be under that tag on my blog. But if romance does occur, pairings possibility: Hades | Cai Shen/Poseidon, Hades | Caishen / Chen (wife in the other origin where Cai Shen was Bi Gan and had a son as a mortal)
