Okay im SCREAMING about the illiterate trio ask, for one all of the explanations provided for how the trio avoid suspicion is Amazing and I agree that Peri is a bro and would totally just help Laslow out. ALSO i am DYING i love the scenario in the tags where Niles pretends to not know and essentially forced Odin to admit he can't read Nohrian. I LOVE him later?? Cornering him in private and?? No teasing, he knows how it feels, he knows it's embarrassing, to be so clearly smart and capable and confident in your own intelligence but Knowing that others would look down their nose upon learning you can't read which isn't your fault nor a signifier of intelligence or lack thereof and yet. And so he approaches Odin and just lays it out and offers to help him and Odin is touched but at the same time that voice in the back of his head going I love language and I am Good With Languages And Writing it's kind of my Thing but he can't actually tell him that, so he's forced to bite his tongue. And ALSO I HAVE HAD THE SAME THOUGHT!! OF OWAIN KNOWING ALL THOSE LANGUAGES!!! He was a prince for one, and as young as they were when The World Ended i still headcanon that as a kid when his parents were off fighting in the war, any time he wasnt playing pretend with his friends was spent in the castle library because that boy has definitely read the dictionary back to back, have you ever Heard him speak?? He read fantasy novels and history accounts beyond his reading level and is Very Well Read. But aside from that, and aside from a prince Definitely being given lessons of geography, culture, and language of neighboring kingdoms...
The shepherds are all one big family?? Theyre so close that their kids are all childhood friends, and theyre all from all over the place!! Most are ylissean, sure, but even a lot of those native ylisseans are nobles who wouldve been taught other languages for Culture and Diplomatic reasons. I just think they'd be this little melting pot of cultures and their children would grow up with all of them and each other and learn one another's languages. Spoken language, at least, and some like Owain would most certainly put effort into studying the written language because he's Interested In That. In the original Japanese, arent most of his weapon names based in other languages anyway? I don't actually have a source for that, i just heard it somewhere, so maybe its not true but he Does name Camilla's armor in German (Old Nohrian) so it is most certainly a headcanon i have, of his interest in language going beyond his native tongue. I just. I got so excited when you mentioned him knowing ylissean, plegian, and feroxi because i too headcanon that he knows all of those languages
(prev. ask) I think Niles!! Would be compassionate!! Yeah!! Obviously the fact Odin can't read is notable and made a note of for Discovering Backstory reasons, but Niles has been there and reading ability is not a sign of capability or intelligence or any of those things. He's here to help and he's not going to allow anyone to feel bad about what they don't know due to simple circumstance
Also, agreed that a lot of the Awakening kids probably speak a lot of languages! They were so mixed up in each other's cultures all the time; Olivia and Basilio and Flavia are close friends, so it makes sense that at least some of the kids who may have grown up near Regna Ferox (Inigo w/ Olivia & maybe Owain if you hc Lon'qu as his dad like me) would know it. Plus you've got Plegians in the squad, so Noire & Henry's kid (also Inigo for me) would know Plegian. And Cherche is teaching Gerome the language of Rosanne; same for Verion's kid. The list just goes on! Languages shared with your friends and family, before and after the end of the world!
#my text#fe13#asks#fe14#i think out of all the people peri would think it least weird that laslow can't read#like it's just not a big deal to her. as long as he can hold a sword and kill people what does he need to read for?#she's there to read the bounties for him or we/e lol#robin learns plegian for strategic reasons + homeland reasons; lucina & morgan both learn. almost everyone learns for war reasons#saw an interesting fic one time that was like#lon'qu has been gone from chon'sin for so long and he left when so young that he's not really connected to#the language or culture there anymore#so i don't know how well he speaks the language there#and given i usually hc owain as his kid bc same outfits i don't know how well that means owain also knows the language#if lon'qu#having fled to regna ferox after ke'ri's dead when he as a kid#had been speaking feroxi for so much longer than his birth langauge#and therefore couldn't teach much of it to his son besides the basics#but i also really like the idea that owain does know it bc he purposely sought it out?#the culture and language his dad left behind but is still his by birthright? that he wants to connect to and know?#but how well can you do that at the end of the world also#anyway all the kids know at least 2 languages minimum. lucina & owain probably know more for royal reasons#also brady bc you know maribelle would harp on that but he does have a thick accent no matter where he goes#laurent is very studious but idk how well he's studied language. i bet severa knows a lot but like. conversational stuff she picked up#as a mercenary in the timeskip and just traveling. not formal learning#i could keep going but anyway i bet they know a lot#and then anakos gives them magic translation powers so#also as a side note i think owain is well rounded as a prince should be but also. his parents died young and there was a war. so i think#his education got cut short. maribelle was probably in charge for a lot of it. him + brady as school mates#brady is trying and he is doodling but picking up on the things he's interested in#owain doesn't understand why nah reads books in their support when they're teens but it's possible he did a lot of reading as a young kid
