feel like ive complained about this before but I hate how when you go to the store there's a billion fun coffee flavors like hazelnut, mocha, dark chocolate, caramel, ect but like. with hot cocoa mixes its just. regular. extra marshmallow, and MAYBE white choco peppermint seasonally.
and same with cafes, they have a ton of fun coffee options like lattes and stuff with all kinds of syrups and toppings but (1) hot cocoa thing, and its usually so mid and watery it feels like an afterthought. (and before anyone says well just get decaf like..yes I cant drink caffeine for medical reasons so decaf would probably be fine to have, but I kinda just dont LIKE the taste of the coffee. I want the coffee completely GONE but still desire a fun and cute beverage with whipped cream and syrups at coffee shops and not always have to make it at home DIY style or ask the employees to change menu items to fit my needs.)
my dream is a hot chocolate cafe that has a billion fun flavors and variations of hot choco with all sorts of milks too for lactose intolerant ppl. no coffee on the menu. do u guys see the vision
#i had a white hot chocolate drink in nassau that i will never forget. it was so expensive but so worth it#it had marshallows. whipped cream. sprinkles. one of those cookie sticks. chocolate shells#A COLOR CHANGING CUP THAT I GOT TO KEEP!!!!!! since then ive just#had a deep longing. for more cool variations on hot chocolate#tho that one was technically a frozen hot chocolate. like DUDE. delicious#sanchoyorambles#u CAN find gourmet hot choco flavors online but even then the variety is NOWHERE NEAR gourmet coffee flavor varieties :(#if i ever get megarich aside from bear genetics this will be my eccentric rich person buisness id fund

Loving Lex In the Aggregate
There is something delightfully askew in loving an opera singer near a deep-water channel, with a Soviet trawler slipping by, and the water from its wake sweetly slapping the rocks below.
You see, I want to love Lex in the aggregate. I’m a glad fool. Picnics in parks on prom nights, watching screwball comedies on Channel 40 out of Sacramento, wearing thin ties in mini-knots in a town where ties aren’t required. You know, stuff like that.
Understand, I’m not playing a rake or rogue here. I want to cool my hot feral brain with any variation of C.K. Dexter-Haven I can find.
The Great Lex is no different. She has Rene Russo locks, a visage like Deborah Kerr, chocolate brown eyes, and boop-boop-be-doop lips. She walks like an ugly duckling from a small town would. You know. The ones who are outcast and uncertain about the attractiveness they’ve grown into, learning how to get even, and parlaying that attraction into a future.
We’re desperate for sophistication. We want out. And our first chakras are on fire.
Did I tell you that Lex was a coloratura soprano?
It would seem that a date at the Sherwood Theatre would portend nothing. I mean, I take Lex to see “The Jungle Book”. We are 21-years-old. Now, the fact that we are tongue-fucking each other to near injury portends everything. Using our tongues in ways beyond their design shows that Disney has no idea what their films inspire.
Desperate to experience every degree of each other’s being, we take the long slow drive on a levee road out past Ladd’s Marina. Out past the asparagus stalks planted in peat dirt fields. Out to the single road that line the banks of the Stockton Channel. Along the way, it feels that every inhale I take is an initiation. Every exhale, a death.
I park my 72’ Fiat Spyder facing east. Life has moved on from us asking any more questions of it. A Soviet trawler filled with Russian grain quietly slides east towards the Stockton Harbor.
We get out of the car, walk to the trunk searching for the perfect flat space, and Lex, in an authoritative voice tells me “Turn around”
I face the west. 5. 10. 15 second’s pass. Why am I counting? I lose the more I try to keep time. Fading. Fading. Fading fast. I pulse everywhere, especially in the parts of me that are now profoundly reliable.
“Turn around”
I do. The Great Lex sits on the trunk. Her feet rests on the blue metal. Knees bent. Thighs apart. Skirt hiked to her hips. Lex is moonlight now and I am being bathed in her sweet gypsy glow.
“I really like your tongue” she says.
Lex and I learned a lot last night. That there is honor in having knees bloodied by asphalt. That sex can be had in the presence of the Soviet Merchant Marine. We learned how to be humble, know our place in the universe, and still be bold enough to stiffen nipples, cock and clits. That, ultimately, sex and love require a linguistic base, even if it’s only two words and screamed to God. And finally, when it’s all over, that there’s love in gently touching each others randomly shaped scars.

HPHM Amortentia Scent Headcanons
Or as I like to put it, “Scentcanons!” ...I’ll show myself out.
No but for real, I had an anon asking about this, so let’s dive in!
The question here is what would each character smell in Amortentia vs what another person would smell if they fancied said character. There are also certain characters who we have confirmed from canon. Finally, I’d like to clarify that I don’t think of Amortentia scents being exclusive to who one is attracted to romantically, just that it can go that way. I don’t want to get too deep into shipping, so any loved ones that turn up as scents probably aren’t going to be romantic interests.
Rowan - We know they smell of parchment, ink, and lumber. As for what they would smell, I think we can safely assume they’d smell old books, tree sap, and probably Fuzzclaw? Speaking as someone who’s grown up with cats, they do have a unique and not unpleasant smell to them. Everything that reminds Rowan of home, and of what they love.
Ben - Someone who had feelings for Ben would probably smell the scent of dust, or if we want to be more poetic, petrichor. Yeah, I like that. It makes sense given how much he hides and sneaks around. As for Ben himself, I feel like he would be drawn to the scent of safer things. At least Pre-Portrait Vault. I’ve seen clean sheets, mint leaves/mint soap, and hot chocolate used as examples before, and all of them agree with me.
Penny - I can imagine someone would smell whatever her perfume/conditioner is. Let’s go with honeydew, that kinda suits her. Head-canons for what Penny herself would smell are the metallic scent of a Cauldron, the wildflowers from Kew Gardens (where she’s said her family visits) and also Beatrice’s hair. Come on, Bea is the person she loves the most, easily.
Merula - Another canon confirmation, Merula smells of nail polish, cloves, and something “elusive.” (The MC/Merula hints continue, I swear to god.) As for what Merula herself would pick up on, I feel like it would be scents that are attractive, but also painful, if that makes sense? To suit her prickly nature. Stuff like smoke and soot, as well as poison ivy. On top of that, maybe something softer to counter-balance it, like pumpkin pie?
Bill - I feel like Bill would smell of leather. Let me explain. While he’s usually depicted in a variation on his school uniform, we know from Harry’s description that he was “cool.” In HPHM, he doesn’t have the earring yet, but he does have the long hair. I feel like he’d smell of leather. As for Bill himself, gonna go with scents that remind him of home. Stuff like Molly’s cooking, his father’s jumper, even the gnomes out back.
Andre - He totally wears perfume, he is the type. There are just certain characters (Penny is another) where you just know that’s a thing they do. So whatever type he wears, that’s what the Andre fans pick up on. For Andre himself? I’m gonna go with the scent of a sewing machine, as well as a broom shed, and maybe something that reminds him of his family, since he seems to be close with them.
Tulip - As for Tulip’s scent, this is going to go full on fanon, and I’m going to say she smells like cherries. Because apparently when the writers were designing her wand, it was going to be made of cherry wood and be a family heirloom. I still think Sycamore suits her better, but I love that idea. As for the scents Tulip would find attractive, I’m going to go with ones that carry a hint of danger. Candle wax, for example, is always close to a fire. The scent of dungbombs feels like a given. If anyone likes it, Tulip would. Finally, I’m gonna go with pond water, because of Dennis.
Tonks - Anyone who fancies Tonks is probably going to pick up on the scent of Zonko’s. That is where she spends most of her time and does all her shopping, after all. As for what she would smell? I’m gonna say maybe a Wizarding candy, like Fizzing Whizbees. The packaging on something like a Fanged Frisbee. And even Filch’s office, because she has cherished memories of practicing mischief there.
Barnaby - Canon time, we know Barnaby smells like sandalwood and fresh laundry, which is just adorable. But I feel as though Barnaby would be drawn to the scent of the flowers and trees from the Reserve, as well as the old, dusty and musty smell of the Dueling Club. For a third scent I think I’ll go with the smell of Hagrid’s Hut. This is totally a head-canon, but I think they become very close friends.
Ismelda - Well, this one is awkward. The game loves to make jokes about how she smells bad, but maybe to someone who’s in love with her, the scent would be nice? As odd as that sounds. Otherwise, who knows. She had to have cleaned up pretty nice for the Celestial Ball, right? As for Ismelda herself, this one is tricky. But like Merula, I think she’d be drawn to scents that have more of an edge. Fresh ink comes to mind, and perhaps burnt toast. Other than that? I’m not sure.
Charlie - This one also has canon to back it up, Charlie smells like honeysuckle and grass. As for what he would smell in Amortentia...okay, let's get the obvious out of the way right now. Whatever dragons smell like, that’s going to be one of his scents. Because I don’t care what canon says, he works with dragons in the Reserve. He just does. Other than that, I feel like maybe the metallic scent of a Snitch, because we know he’s a Seeker, and maybe the thistles of trees in the Forbidden Forest? He’s said to hang out there.
Liz - I’m pretty sure she’s supposed to smell like lake-water and hay? I cannot find the screenshots, but her scent was also confirmed by Care of Magical Creatures. In any case, Liz is a fairly straight-forward character to get a handle on. Her smells from Amortentia are mulch, (don’t judge her) as well as a Porlock’s fur, and the scent of vegetables. She’s an outdoorsy sort of girl and similar to Newt Scamander, seems to get along better with other creatures than humans.
Chiara - In terms of what someone would smell, I’d have to go with moonflowers. I know it’s the obvious choice, but how can I resist? As for Chiara herself, I’m going to go with fresh soil, hospital sheets, and dog fur. Reflecting her interests in Herbology and Healing, and also representing the sweetest baby to ever exist, Borf. I’ve seen head-canons that she would smell Wolfsbane potion, but it’s supposed to taste disgusting, so I doubt it.
Talbott - Likewise, I think it’s pretty clear that someone would smell the scent of bird feathers if they fancied Talbott. If that’s too cliche, go with whatever product he puts in his hair, since it’s always slicked back. As for what Talbott smells, I’d go with the scent of hay from the Owlery, maybe the quills that he writes his notes with, and finally the scent of his mother, or her necklace. Could be the same, at least as far as he remembers.
Jae - Anyone who fancies Jae is going to pick up his scent, so probably the scent of the Hogwarts Kitchens, since that’s where he spends most of his time. For Jae, okay...money has a unique scent. It just does. And he deals with it a lot, doing what he loves. So I’m gonna say the scent of galleons, turkey sandwiches, and maybe something with more of an edge, like Firewhiskey. Come on, we all know he’s tried it before.
Badeea - She’s a character I don’t know nearly as well, though I’d like to rectify that. I’m torn between saying that the scent of paint would be what someone else smells if they fancy her, or if it would be something that she herself smells because she loves painting. No reason it couldn’t be both. Other than that, she gives me the feeling that she’s someone who would be really into incense and various spices, like maybe sage. So it’s all chemicals with Badeea...make of that what you will.
Diego - I also don’t know him well enough to judge, but I am certain that he’s the type to wear cologne, so whatever it is that he’s wearing is what the Diego fans would pick up on. As for Diego himself, I’m gonna say the resin of a dance floor, the scent of denim (he wears a lot of it) and probably the smell of flowers? He does make a few casanova style lines about enjoying them. And not just the hellebore.
Skye - No clue what Skye’s scent would be. Probably something strong Citrus. As for what she picks up on, gonna go with the scent of quaffles, ground coffee, and maybe the streets of Wigtown. I just feel like she doesn’t have much of a life outside of Quidditch and her legacy and has kind of turned herself into a machine to fulfil that life goal, without focusing on anything else.
Murphy - Murphy smells like linen. Don’t ask me why, I just know that this is true. I can just feel it. It suits him. As to what Murphy himself picks up on, among other things he smells Kneazle fur, the wood of a chessboard, and the scent of chalk. I mean come on, this one one of the easier characters to figure out, give me a hard one.
Orion - Someone who fancied Orion would seriously pick up on the scent of his hair, because that is some glorious hair. Orion himself would probably smell Jasmine Tea, Quidditch Grass, and the scent of sea salt. I’m not sure why exactly, but he’s a character who I’ve actually thought about this for before, and I think these scents are mystical enough but also give the suggestion of an overall healthy balance.
Rath - This is a case like Ismelda, where I don’t think anyone ever gets close enough to smell her, but more out of fear than the idea that she might smell unpleasant. But I feel like she smells like ginger. As for what she would pick up from Amortentia, the metallic scent of a bludger, as well as perhaps the scent of new robes, and maybe broomstick polish? Similar to Skye, I’m not sure. Not because she has no life outside of Quidditch, but we have no idea what it entails if she does.
Beatrice - I feel like anyone who fancied Beatrice (We are not getting into the debate of who that might be) would probably pick up the smell of her makeup? Because she wears a lot of it now, seemingly every day. As for what she would pick up on herself? I’m gonna say the scent of puffskeins, since she seems to be a fan of them and have one of her own. As well as the scent of the library, but specifically the Restricted Section, because I feel like she regularly breaks in. Finally, hmm...maybe something to do with home? Perhaps a fresh baked pie that her parents made? Just throwing out ideas.
Covered as many characters as I could think of, and there were only so many scents that occurred to me, aha. I hope this helps though, anon!

JMB and cooking?
(Thank you so much for your patience, I know it has been forever. Thank you also for an awesome prompt!
1.
“It will be fun,” Grantaire had said. “It’s beer-and-cheesenight, it’ll be totally cool.”
And sure, everyone has been lovely, both the handfulMusichetta already knew and the handful she didn’t. And sure, the food has beenutterly delicious, generous and rich servings of raclette complemented by the eclecticsampling of beers everyone’s contributed to.
And sure, Joly has adorable springy curls and a charminggrin and dimples and makes rapid-fire puns. And sure, Bossuet is tall and baldand endearing and is wearing a t-shirt with a cartoon whale and also makesridiculous puns. And sure, they’re criminally adorable together and keep kickingone another’s feet and she’s already sure they’re all going to be the greatestfriends, and that’s fantastic, but.
“Oh no,” she whispers, when the door finally closes behindthem, “they’re hot.”
Grantaire laughs, the bastard.
2.
“… All I’m saying is that if your superstrength isn’tconsistent, there should be a good reason for it, because, like, at least giveyour narratively-convenient variations a cool alien name or something,” Bossuetsays, not looking up from the onion he’s julienning while also somehow absentlyleaning against the counter. That seems patently unfair, as Musichetta can’tabsently julienne onions.
Musichetta nods, even though he can’t see, and shimmies tothe side so Joly can reach around her for the spices. “I mean, yes, that’strue. But also, if your moments of narrative requiring disappearing skills areall for damelsing your ladies, you maybe have a bigger problem.”
“At least be up front about it,” Joly agrees, stealing oneof Musichetta’s carrot chunks as he ducks back. He’s wearing skinny jeans today, new and a flattering deep maroon, and they do wonderful things to his calves. It’s very distracting. “Damselium. The Curse of the Heteropatriarchy. Themysterious Shitty EXcuse Implying Stereotypical Things gene.”
She snorts at that as Bossuet’s witty retort seems to be cutshort, delayed in favor of whirling around to give Joly a high-five for theimpromptu wordplay, and as much as Musichetta is looking forward to theirevening of shitty superhero films and dinner, she’s having the time of her liferight now.
3.
It doesn’t seem like it’s as much when they all live in thesame house, really, because there’s always something on hand and someone to goget take out if necessary. That’s one of the benefits of roommates andboyfriends. That’s also the benefits of lots of friends, because someone alwayshas a minute to run by at least with some noodles and tea.
Still, though, Musichetta hopes it still counts, as littleas this is. That’s why she runs to the store three times when Bossuet andGrantaire realize that they’ve forgotten some vital ingredient or that Bossuet’sjealously horded sausage from Bahorel has succumbed to abrupt freezer burn. It’swhy she shifts foot to foot cooking down lemon curd for the better part of anhour because anyone who says desserts aren’t a vital meal component is wrong.
And it’s nothing fancy, and it doesn’t feel like enough tomake up for the everything else, for the way that she can’t do more to ease Joly’spain or help his joints settle or make his doctors listen as thoughtfully asJoly would to his patients. But thenJoly stumbles from the bedroom, leaning heavily on his cane and banded aboutwith braces, bent with pain and restless with boredom. Then he sees the fullystocked fridge with portioned tupperware, each labled with a pun or a doodle, andhis eyes well up with easy-coming tears as he blinks, and his voice breaks alittle as he helplessly says: “You guys.”
And then, it feels like it just might be enough.
4.
Musichetta feels silly and hopeless, standing in thekitchen, her fingers coated with ginger and lemongrass as she attempts to blother tears against her shoulder. She hasn’t cried all day, and even now it’s notthe ache of missing that’s brought her to tears, just the half-made soup thatshe’d really love to finish once her vision isn’t so blurry again.
It’s not even that her grandfather is gone, because she’s happy he’s not in pain, it’s just. It’s just. It’s the story her grandfather told them all, every time he ever cooked, thefamiliar cadence of the words, of the not-quite-trite story of how he didn’tknow how to cook when he’d married her grandmother, how it took her falling illfor him to realize how much she did, how much he took for granted. It’s the wayhe would always cup Musichetta’s face in his rough old-man hands and say “Lovesomeone who is humble enough to be wrong, and more than that, love someone whowill learn to make you soup when you’re sick.”
And she does, she does, she has two people who are humbleand kind and never take her for granted and she makes them soup when they’resick and they do the same for her, and she never got to say. And now all she has is half-made breakfast soup and a pot ofpepper she can’t blame for her red eyes.
“I’m so sorry,” Bossuet says, careworn and gentle around theedges from his own losses, enfolding her in his arms. His cheek rests againsther head, and he only holds her tighter when her messy hands clutch helplesslyat his threadbare hoodie.
“How about I keep working on this, and you hug Lesgle and tellme how not to do it wrong?” Joly offers very gently and kisses the back of herhead.
Musichetta’s heart aches.
“Okay,” she says, and lets them help.
5.
“I hear no one felt like cooking,” Bossuet calls, stompinghis boots free of the last traces of snow by the entryway. There’s the faintrustle of plastic bags, too, and the scent of warm spices begins to permeatethe air. “So I brought falafel and chicken wraps because I love you.”
“We love you too,” Musichetta sings, drizzling dishsoap inthe last of the bowls and setting it to soak. She dries her hands on the toweltucked into her belt and tilts her head towards the door. “You should come giveus food and also kisses.”
“We’re just wrapping up in here,” Joly adds, flourishing hisspatula and sending light gleaming across his splint rings, as Bossuet pokeshis head in. “I’d feel falafel if we ruined our appetites with dessert first, but thankfully you’re right on time.”
“It’s chickpea-k baking time in here,” Musichetta agrees, giggling at Joly’s puns even as she goes to tiptoe to kiss Bossuet. His cheeksare flushed red from the cold and there are little melting ice crystals dottinghis hat – her hat, technically – but his smile is warm as they break apart. “Ican’t believe you chickened out of it.”
“Don’t grill me on my life choices,” Bossuet complains, kissing her forehead before setting down his bags. “Besides, Bahorel and I wereon the lamb, there was a law school alumn event.”
Joly and Musichetta make a simultaneous noise of amusementat that. Still not abandoning the spatula, Joly coaxes Bossuet down for a kiss, kissing the tip of his nose after.
“Well, you’re safe from the law for now,” Joly informs him, going back to moving cookies from the baking tray to the arrangement of platesholding the rest of their endeavors. “But not safe yet, because you are doomedto an evening of cuddles.”
“It’s true,” Musichetta agrees. “After dinner, I’mma makechocolate and Courfeyrac has finally given us her churro recipe, and also thereare so many cookies.”
“Oh man, and it’s snowing outside, big lovely flakes.”Bossuet kisses Joly’s ear before turning to get plates and silverware, just asMusichetta’s stomach starts to grumble. “Grantaire may even be seduced home forchurros and cookies and cakes, but I feel like he’d be even more enticed if wethrew in romcoms.”
“Musical romcoms,”Joly pipes up, eager.
Musichetta hangs up the handtowel again and props her handson her hips. “I can’t even believe you’re trying to use R as an excuse, musicalromcoms are always the right answerin this house, especially if they come with baked goods and falafel-”
“- and fries-” Bossuet adds.
“- and fries,” Musichetta amends. “Also cuddles. Because it’smotherfucking winter.”
“I love you guys so much,” Joly sighs. “C’mon, c’mon, I amsore and starving and am too adorable to go uncuddled for this long. I will getblankets if you carry everything out to the living room.”
“That we can do,” Musichetta agrees, and feels like singing for all the warmth in her heart.

Day 188: The Golden Circle
Over the course of our trip, we saw some amazing natural wonders---from the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco to the windswept isles of Scotland. But here, on our last full day of the entire trip, we saw things to rival them all.
If you have just one day in Iceland and want to see as much of its otherworldly beauty as possible, the go-to solution is to book what's called a Golden Circle tour. Every tour company has its own variation on the theme, but as the name suggests, it involves a circular day trip that stops at some of the most iconic tourist sites within striking distance of Reykjavik. There are geysers, waterfalls, and a dramatic valley where the oldest parliament in the world once met and which is slowly being torn apart by tectonic forces.
We got up early, bundled up, and walked out to a nearby hotel to be picked up. In the van, we met some other tourists who had booked a Northern Lights tour the night before. We had considered doing the same, but listening to their story reassured us that we had made a smart decision.
They had driven for hours and hours and never seen them, getting back long after midnight and having to scrounge a few hours of disappointed sleep before getting up again for the Golden Circle tour. Apparently, there's only about a one in three chance of actually seeing an aurora on one of those tours. It could very well be worth doing if you were spending a week in Iceland, but not if you want to make the most of a single day.
In a way, traveling across Iceland reminded me of traveling across Morocco. The geography couldn't be more different, but they were each strikingly alien in their own way from what I'm used to the world looking like. Iceland is young, geologically speaking. It is still being formed by volcanic and tectonic activities, with sharp angles that have yet to be weathered down and desolate plains that have never known the touch of trees.
It's not surprising that Iceland has become a popular filming location for the alien worlds of sci-fi films like Prometheus and Interstellar.
I took almost as many pictures here as I had on Skye.
As we left Reykjavik behind us, we could see the signature plumes of steam from the geothermal vents that dot the landscape. A quarter of the city's electricity comes from harnessing these vents, as does all of its hot water, which is either pumped in from the power plants or up from the ground beneath Reykjavik itself. Visitors who don't already know this fact will certainly learn it as soon as they take a shower or run a dishwasher. That good old sulfuric twang is a dead giveaway.
As we passed near one of the major geothermal stations, we could see the water pipes zig-zagging across the landscape. The pipes look like they're resting right on the ground, which isn't far off the truth. Between the cold air, hot water, and geologically active ground, there's no way the pipes could be anchored to the surface. They'd be torn apart. Instead, the pipes rest on a series of platforms and rollers, free to expand and contract as the laws of nature demand.
Our first stop of the tour (not including a "comfort break" at a roadside rest stop) was the Kerith crater lake. The most impressive thing about Kerith is the color---the ground is made of deep red lava rock, and the water is solid turquoise. The water of the lake is actually an exposed portion of the natural water table. The water doesn't come from rain or streams; it rises up out of the ground.
With plenty of even more impressive sites ahead of us, we were given just enough time to walk around the rim of the crater and appreciate the bleak countryside surrounding it. Nic also ran down to investigate the water itself.
He informed us that it was cold.
Our next stop was a horse farm.
Iceland has its own unique breed of horses. They're short, stocky, and naturally healthy, with a rocking hairdo. They're the only horse breed allowed in Iceland, and once an Icelandic horse leaves the island, it is never allowed to return for fear of carrying foreign diseases back with it.
After learning a bit about what makes Icelandic horses so special, we got to go inside the stables and meet a few Icelandic horses up close. They were extraordinarily calm and friendly, but there was one chocolate-colored horse that shied away from almost everyone. I was able to coax it into letting me pet its muzzle. The others were impressed, and I was feeling like a bit of a horse whisperer---until a woman from our group came up and got him to come right to her. Oh, well.
Apparently, the most impressive thing about Icelandic horses, besides their cuteness, is that they have five natural gaits, or ways of walking and running. Most horses have three natural gaits: walk, trot, and canter/gallop. All horses know these three gaits instinctively; they don't need to be taught.
In addition to walking, trotting, and cantering, Icelandic horses also know how to tolt and skeio. I won't try to explain any of them---YouTube could to a better job of that than I ever could---but suffice it to say that these two extra gaits are supposed to make Icelandic horses much smoother and more comfortable to ride at high speeds.
Of course, we got a live demonstration of all five gaits, complete with a bit where the rider held a full pint glass in the air to show how effortless the ride was.
Our next stop was a "small" waterfall near the highway. To be fair, it was nothing compared to the waterfall we'd be seeing later in the day, but it was still a gorgeous scene.
Finally, right around noon, it was time to start seeing the Big Deal sights on the Golden Circle, starting with Geysir, the namesake of all geysers. (Don't ask me why they changed the spelling.)
The main show here isn't actually Geysir but another geyser named Strokkur, which erupts in a towering plume every 5 to 10 minutes.
Geysir itself sits a bit further up the hillside, but it's more of a hot tub than a geyser these days. Its eruptions can shoot hundreds of feet into the air, but it's been years since the last one actually happened. Geysir is old and tired, and its pipes are a little clogged, so it can only perform if it gets a little help from an earthquake or its caretakers. Still, at over 60 feet across, it's impressive enough just to watch it resting---a 212-degree sleeping giant.
The whole area around Geysir and Strokkur is filled with smaller geysers, springs, steam vents, and boiling mudpots. Everywhere we walked, the ground was awash with rivulets of steaming water. Thankfully, the frigid air cools the water quickly, so you don't need to worry about melting soles as long as you stay inside the ropes.
Nestled inconspicuously in a seemingly flat and empty stretch of scrubland lay the next big sight of the tour---Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall. From the parking lot, you can just make out a sliver of the Hvita river upstream and a hint of mist rising up into the air. In what is surely a brilliantly planned piece of crowd control, the true spectacle of Gullfoss stays patiently hidden from view until you get to just the right spot on the path. Then it hits you all at once.
Gullfoss is a wild, almost otherworldly cascade of angles. The Hvita river dives sharply to the left, then even more sharply to the right, plunging into a deep rift valley that runs off at yet another wild angle.
After a bit of waiting in line, we made it up to a mist-soaked rocky outcropping in the very middle of it all. The roar, the chill, the power, the sheer beauty, even the crowds of tourists experiencing it along with us---all of it blended together into one of those transcendent moments where time fades away and your noisy mind is subsumed in pure awe.
It was, quite simply and honestly, one of the most stunning masterpieces of nature that I've ever seen with my own eyes.
Eventually, at some point, we made our way back to the van and continued on our way---to Thingvellir National Park.
Thingvellir is interesting for a couple reasons. The first is geological. Thingvellir straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the tectonic dividing line between the Eurasian and North American plates. The plates are spreading apart at a little less than an inch every year. Which means that Thingvellir (and the rest of Iceland) is spreading apart at a little less than an inch every year.
We could see this divide as clearly as the watery rift in the ground that it’s creating. The rift is called the Silfra, and if you have the time and inclination, you can actually go scuba diving in this crack between two continents. I don't really get claustrophobic, but the thought of that makes me uncomfortable. Apparently, though, the water is some of the clearest in the world.
Even more importantly---and probably quite surprisingly for most people---Thingvellir has a very notable position in political history. It is the original site of the oldest extant parliament in the world, the Icelandic Althingi. (Yes, the Old Norse word for parliament was basically "the All Thing"---the word thing originally meaning a gathering or assembly.)
Starting around 930 AD, chieftains from across Iceland would gather once a year at Thingvellir ("the Assembly Fields") to recite existing laws, debate new laws, and settle disputes. The Icelanders had no written language, so it was important for the laws to be recited on a regular basis to make sure everyone stayed on the same page.
No buildings from these meetings survive, but they were always big events. The chieftains would bring their retinues, and citizens from across the country would also come to observe the proceedings, address the assembly, or sell food and trinkets to everyone else.
The central meeting point of Althingi was called the Logberg, or Law Rock. No one knows for sure exactly where the original Law Rock was, but a flagpole marks the most popularly theorized spot.
Walking uphill to the tourist center, we were able to take in the beautiful, desolate scenery. To be honest, it made me want to reinstall Skyrim once I got back home.
The rain had picked up at this point, so we took shelter in the visitor center for the last few minutes before it was time to meet back up at the van.
Back in Reykjavik, we walked around the shopping district until it was time for dinner.
And of course, dinner was at the Lebowski Bar, where we enjoyed some delicious---albeit very expensive---burgers, fries, and milkshakes. As a small nod to our current host country, Jessica and I also enjoyed some Icelandic beer. I had a red lager, a type of beer I'd never heard of before. It was really good, like a red ale but cleaner.
Sure, it was a shamelessly tacky and touristy extravagance, but we had plenty of reason for both celebration and mourning. This was the last supper of our trip. The next time we dined, it would be on burritos in California.

15 mahogany hair color ideas that you will love
A mahogany hair color is a bright hue that is a blend of browns and reds. This luxurious shade is not surprisingly the most desirable hair color ever, because it fits both cool and warm skin tones! It is bright and yet cool, lively and yet subtle, and elegant and relaxed. It's everything a stylish and casual girl would want for her clothes! Along with a matching hairstyle, this woody shade provides a beautiful sheen and a sexy finish.
The brunette celebrities Isla Fisher, Sofia Vergara, Demi Lovato and Priyanka Chopra all had their strands of mahogany. They have proven that their choice of brown is the best! You can wear it as a highlight, as a spot color or in an ombre, as the famous Utah hair dye Jessica Powers does with her clients!

You can wear it as a highlight, as a spot color or in an ombre, as the famous Utah hair dye Jessica Powers does with her clients!
Take a look at the humblest examples of mahogany hair color that are currently the most popular!
Deep mahogany with highlights
How would you describe this look?
I would call this look very trendy. It is subtle, not too sociable or loud, but also very unique and beautiful and seems to fit almost any skin tone. I love how much dimension this color gives the hair. Some brighter pieces of my client's hair before the service absorbed more of the red like tones. Others absorbed more of the mahogany tones and gave it a beautiful dimension. In addition, the Beach Wave look helps to get so much more dimension!
Any advice for someone considering it?
Advice is the most important part of the service! Talk to your stylist about any questions you have. This color looks fantastic and long hair, and beach waves are trendy even on any length.
If you are trying to achieve the beach wave look, use dry shampoo and hair spray. My favorites are Arrojo dry shampoo and Kenra 25 hair spray with a light mist of every kind of shine spray. Guy Tang's is my personal favorite. The look is fantastic for any casual outfit or perfect for a night outfit.
Dark to light mahogany ombre
How would you describe this look?
This look is a classic ombré look – darker at the top and lighter at the ends. I love how the mahogany color blends harmoniously into the golden blonde. I also gave my client a fresh haircut, followed by the use of a large curling iron.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This look is perfect for a customer who is less likely to enter the salon. You do not have to refresh the roots so much. This color combination would look good on any skin color and hair length. To get the color, I recommend sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Also get haircuts often, which prevents breaking and splitting. This color is pretty, fun and looks great even in the sunshine!
Cherrywood mahogany
How would you describe this look?
This look is a dimensional mahogany reverse Ombré. Most traditional ombrés begin dark at the roots and merge to a lighter color at the ends. This ombre goes from bright at the root to darker at the ends. It's because my client had an earlier black box hair color that we had to correct and work with.
My favorite thing about this paint job would be that it is very multi-dimensional, rich in tone, unconventional, and worked out with a previously used canvas. Ombré, highlights or lowlights are a great way to give your hair dimensionality, depth and luminosity, as opposed to a solid color. It shows that there are still ways to recycle or improve a paint job with a previously used canvas.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Any advice for someone will receive a full and correct advice from a professional face to face. The consultation will confirm what is possible with your current canvas, which colors complement your skin tone and your personal style (bold and subtle). It will also cover how often you need to return to the salon, what's in your budget and how you would like the color to progress over time for future hair changes?
The advice can also reveal tips that help to preserve and protect your new hair color. These include color-fast professional shampoos, heat-resistant products for heat styling and SPF-treated leave-in products to protect against the sun. It can also cover how often you need to wash your hair and the water temperature used to wash the hair. Here are some other important factors to consider when it comes to hair color: hot tool usage, chlorinated pools, prolonged sun exposure, hard water and overworked hair.
This professional advice will give you a better understanding of what you can expect and how you can tailor things to your needs and desires. Every person is different. Therefore, every consultation varies from person to person.
Mahogany Balayage
How would you describe this look?
This look is a strong mocha-copper color. The highlights are warm and brighten the skin without being too bold. The style consists of soft layers and finger-combed curls to give the hair, which can be too heavy to hold a tight spiral, movement and body.
Any advice for someone considering it?
For this style (and blow-drying in general) we like to use Matrix Biolage Avocado Smoothing Cream. This product was made with coarse hair in the back of the head, but it is a wonderful product that is suitable for all hair types. This style is a wonderful option for women with thick, heavy hair. Often the weight of the hair makes it difficult to hold a curl or waves, but this style gives the wavy, wavy look without looking too old.
Mocha tones and deep copper tones are a great option for people who want a pop of color but do not necessarily want to be super bright like a blonde. "It's important to remember that highlights are not automatic mean", "and this style is a perfect example of that.
I would consider this as a hairstyle and color with low maintenance. The color stays bright and warm for weeks using the right products. I would suggest that Matrix Keep Me Vivid Shampoo, Conditioner and Velvetizer Leave-In Cream be used.
Mahogany burgundy blend
How would you describe this look?
This look is a soft look with a lively look. My favorite part about it can play with the color dimension. The mixture of muted red and a continuous berry red is so pleasing to the eye. For this style he was loosely lured and combed apart to create more sounds. So her length stays visible and gives her a very casual glam look.
Any advice for someone considering it?
It's about the product. If you could get your hair, invest in the right shampoo, conditioner, hair care (colorant). Also, consider investing in appropriate styling tools to keep the hair healthy and happy.
This guest had the previous balayage I had done some time ago. She had light at the ends that made this look possible without a double service. Someone who wants this look would need to be prepared for a whitening service before the color service has the dimension.
This product line is Eufora. It is a remarkable color and style line. This guest left the house with the "Color Lock System", which is used after each wash and keeps the paint 30% longer. Products such as the "color elixir" liven up these tones with the comfort of your shower, are used as a conditioner and give your hair a red glow every time.
Without the right products, red is not guaranteed to last. Their type of water, bad product or too frequent washing, this can expect a higher care effect.
This color is so soft that it fits many personalities. It's great for someone who needs change and wants something brave, but not over the top. The placement on the vivid tones can be adapted to any face shape.
Copper mahogany shade
Interweaving of chocolate and caramel colors, which are tempting due to the big waves. A silky hair that is cut with such layers makes everyone look younger with its soft gradient.
Dark mahogany
Whether it's a professional dye or dye application at home, you can never hide the beauty of such a natural hair color. Together with an a-line bob, layers and curls, this shiny hair shines wonderfully through and through.
Bright mahogany
A red color to brown hair is always a good idea when experimenting with hair colors. The Bob is a perfect canvas for this color choice and also fits perfectly to her skin tone.
Brunette red wine
Dark plum hairs on the brown side of the spectrum always bring a strong, sexy mood. Lush waves on long hair help to enjoy this mood even more.
With caramel highlights
Long, thick, wavy hair is the right canvas to paint on your chosen brown color with some caramel highlights.
Dark chocolate mahogany
Be the envy of every lady with her luxurious, rich, brown hair that easily falls! A beautiful mahogany ombre makes the master, along with big curls that are the definition of sexy.
With blond highlights
Light blonde highlights that run over brown curls are a great variation for your mahogany hair! Change your hairstyle by having a bob and blow-drying it for a nice, hopping look.
Reddish brown
Unique styling that gives you rich brown roots to an ombre burgundy wine-colored finish. A good choice to curl it for an extra eye-catcher.
Dark brown mahogany
Simple brunette locks that look gorgeous with a shoulder length bob. Shaft ends, which are very manageable every day.
Brown plum
Ebony roots with purple and orange endings are a unique style. Layers and curls reinforce this kaleidoscopic effect for a younger, more vibrant feel.

[FN][SP] Grandma's Pantry
My Grandma loved to bake. She could make anything and everything, from sweets and chocolates to cookies and cake. Anything She made was always unique, always amazing, and always superior to anything you could find at the store. It was so good that Grandma never had an issue gathering friends and family during the holidays and, sometimes, had to tell her children and siblings that they didn’t have to come a week early for every holiday; there would be plenty for everyone and to save their “we just want to help you prepare” stories. No one was ever allowed to be in the kitchen when Grandma was working on her craft. Except for me, one time, on the last birthday we would ever spend with her.
As her only grandchild at the time, I always had some special privileges. For one, I would always get special treats made only for me. I remember when I got there that morning and She handed me a small, smooth black sphere and looked at me expectantly. I was amazed at the darkness of sphere, thinking that it looked wrong and that it was apart from reality. That notion quickly disappeared along with that black ball, and, to this day, I still can’t describe the taste properly. I’ll try for you though: it tasted like Everything and Nothing had a child named Anything who fell in love with Something and all four lived in that little dense sphere. I didn’t say it would make sense to you, and it took me a very long time to even begin to understand what I was tasting, but that’s the best I can do. Anyway, I remember Grandma’s warm smile lighting up the room when I was done and asked her what She was making today. A simple question the breached a wall built of complexity meant to hide the incomprehensibility on the other side.
“I was thinking of making my Apple Pie today. Would you like to help me?”
Of course, I was dying to help her, but what the heck was apple pie? I nodded eagerly, unable to speak from the shock of being asked and my mouth still full from my treat earlier. Swallowing quickly, I breathed out a confident “yes” and She smiled again.
“Let’s see. How do you make an Apple Pie?”
“What is apple pie Grandma?”
That seemed to confuse her and She looked like She was far away, thinking intensely. She remained like that for a moment, seemingly in a deep conversation with herself, until She simply said,
“Sit down child, and I’ll show you.”
I quickly and eagerly sat down on a stool in the kitchen, ready to see her secret and eat whatever this was before anyone else showed up.
“The very first step in making Apple Pie is to grab a little bit of everything. See child, how I pick a little bit from here, a little from there?”
Grandma was picking what seemed like nothing but thin air in front of her as She walked around the kitchen, but upon more careful observation, I saw a little sphere rolling in her fingers quickly growing in size. Grandma kept playing with the sphere, adding something here, removing something there, shaping it, and forming it. Finally, She seemed satisfied with it.
“The next thing we have to do is take all of this and make it really small before we stick in in my special oven.”
She started rolling the sphere, squishing it down until it was about half its size. Setting it on the stove, She started heating it up while rolling it, squishing it even more. Eventually, I could no longer see it but She kept toiling away for what seemed like hours. Finally, She stopped and motioned for me to follow her to the pantry. We walked in and I saw a door at the end that I’ve never noticed before. She had taped a handwritten sign that read: Dangerous, please keep out. She opened the door and we were no longer in her kitchen or anywhere recognizable. It was like that little family of four moved out of their treat house and into wherever we were; Everything and Nothing, along with Anything and Something, got bored of being inside that sphere so they expanded out. Or maybe we condensed in? Grandma speaking jolted me out of trying to understand just what the heck was happening.
“We’ll just set this here. We have to let this get very hot before we can continue making the pie.”
“How hot does it have to get Grandma?”
“Hotter than anything you’ve ever seen before! We’re almost there now, look child!”
Suddenly, I felt a change. It seemed as though there was a slight vibration emanating from the sphere and permeating the fabric of the space we were in, weaving itself into the folds to grab hold. All of a sudden it became very hot, very quickly. Before I could ask what was going on, the little tiny sphere Grandma made started growing with increasing speed, anchored by tendrils of energetic vibrations released moments earlier. Little spheres started emerging and began zooming chaotically, sometimes disappearing when they touched each other and sometimes sticking together. I barely noticed how rapidly everything was cooling down while watching these little things interact, zooming across this immense space that appeared. The dust and gas dissipated, allowing us to see to the continually growing ends of this space. Now I could see that there were other little things zooming around, seemingly identical to the first ones but fundamentally inverse and much harder to see. For some reason, the coupled “lighter zoomers” started settling down in clumps of “darker zoomers”.
“Now we wait child.”
And wait we did. For the longest time, we waited. It seemed that everything had stopped and it had gotten very cold, very dark, and slightly orange. I started to get bored as the pale orange glow faded, but Grandma motioned for me to look more carefully. That’s when I noticed that those clumps of zoomers were moving towards nearby clumps, as though they were drawn to each other. After some time, the zoomers formed what seemed like massive clouds, eventually condensing and shifting and separating to form immense structures containing countless sources of light which almost immediately exploded spectacularly in flashes of color. The explosions affected the zoomers, creating variations and new ways to connect together and settling in every corner of this new space.
Larger and larger structures started to form, and within them there were circular objects of varying size and composition. Some were solid, some were liquid, some gave the illusion of solidity, and some seemed to attract all others nearby and eat them. Different things were happening everywhere and it was impossible to keep track of it all. Grandma and I started slowing down, stopping in the edge of a spiral-like structure with one of those hungry, dark spheres in the center.
We watched as dust and debris coalesced over time, forming a very pimply rock that spouted fire from its innards. We watched different sized rocks hurtled into it and how the refuse from those collisions formed into a much smaller companion. We watched as that fire was partially quelled by deep blue water forming everywhere, how the heat allowed little tiny animals to form deep under the surface. We watched as the waters receded to expose land, empty and lifeless contrasted with the evolution of more complex animals in the water. We watched as the barren land turned green and brown all while breaking apart from itself multiple times. We watched as the entire landscape turned white, then green again. We watch as creatures emerge from the waters to make the land their home, as they grow bigger and bigger until they dominate the rock for a very long time. We watched as fires consume the lands after a massive collision, and how ice quickly covered the surface. We watched as it came to the brink of barrenness, and how it quickly overcame extinction. We watched as millions upon millions of different creatures emerged, how a small subset of them learned how to grab and hold while swinging from trees. We watched the trees disappear, leaving the creatures vulnerable in the tall grasses until they stood up. We watched how, in the blink of an eye, those creatures had formed larger and larger groups and built settlements, which turned into villages, which turned into towns, cities, and metropolises. We watched them disappear in droves as it became hotter, as the land receded. We watched as it all stopped.
Grandma started moving towards the surface of the rock with me following closely behind. I was in awe! I’ve never heard of this before. Quickly, we touched down on the little bit of land remaining in the area. Looking around, we found a few trees with colored orbs in them.
“Hurry child, pick a few of the red ones. We don’t have much time left.”
We filled our bags with the orbs and left the surface, heading towards the pantry door. As we gained speed, the space around us started condensing at a rapid rate. I noticed everything around us was gone except for those gigantic, dark spheres, and even those were growing smaller before popping out of existence. Eventually, we reached the door and turned around to see Everything, Nothing, Anything, Something had returned. Grandma picked the marble-sized sphere up and placed it in her apron pocket. We stepped through the door and back into her kitchen where She immediately began cutting up the orbs (apples, as She called them) and working her magic until finally, She sat down with a steaming sweet-smelling pie. I couldn’t help it.
“I’m so confused Grandma!”
Grandma looked at me for a moment, startled at my outburst, before standing up and asking me to go with her. Silently, She headed down the hallway I’ve been forbidden to explore all my life. At the end, we reached a door She unlocked with a key She fished from her pockets. The door swung open, revealing a study with many exotic objects, books from floor to ceiling, and many other treasures. Walking over to a chest by the window, Grandma took the little marble out of her pocket and opened the chest, revealing many just like it.
“Before your Grandfather moved on, we worked together to create unlimited resources. Each one of these realities was created for a specific purpose. In fact, one of your Grandfather’s inventions is what made our family royalty among the Creator people. This was long before your time, when Creators were everywhere. Now, it’s just our little family. Soon, it’ll just be you child. We could never perfect the concept, as each self-contained reality developed a fundamental flaw somewhere along the way, but maybe you can. Your grandfather experimented with many concepts, some working better than others.”
Grandma smiled as She picked up two marbles: a bright, white, cloudy one and a dark, red, and hot one. She explained that he tried making the perfect utopia in the hopes of producing high-quality resources, but it failed because perfect contentedness stopped progress in its tracks. He then created a fiery hellscape which led to a great quantity of valuable resources, though quality was extremely poor and they quickly fell apart. After millions of attempts, She explained that Grandfather had the idea of storing them in close proximity, hoping that their tendency to connect via organic strings would allow for a compensation of weakness. But, of course, that failed too. They always failed in some way. I looked at Grandma, unable to find the words to say. Then:
“But we had a success Grandma! We made Apple Pie from scratch thanks to you!”
Grandma looked at me and smiled. She looked at the marble and her hand before She placed it in there reverently and closed the lid.
“Let’s go eat child. Let’s go eat.”

What to Wear to a Winery (Your Ultimate Style Guide for Winery Outfits)
What to Wear to a Winery
Wine tasting always makes for a good time! When delicious wine, breathtaking views, fun people and perfect weather surround you, the last thing you want to worry about is your outfit. That is why I put together this ultimate guide on what to wear to a winery. This style guide will not only answer what to wear wine tasting but also go over many style tips, outfit ideas, what to wear during different seasons and it’s full of outfit photos!
To start, let’s review some general winery outfit style tips. These are tips that apply to all of your wine tasting outfits no matter location or season! Keep these ten style tips handy when you’re packing for your wine region adventure.
1. Wear Comfortable Shoes: If you’re planning to sign up for a wine tour or have a long list of wineries you plan to visit, wear comfortable shoes. But comfortable doesn’t have to be sneakers. Instead of sneakers, wear flat sandals, wedges, loafers, or even some nice slides. Also take into consideration which wineries you will be visiting which means you might be walking in grass, dirt, gravel or cobblestone.
2. Go Hands-Free and Small with Your Purse: When you’re wine tasting, you will be walking around a lot, holding and reading brochures, tasting cheeses or chocolates, and of course, holding various wine glasses. So it’s best to wear a fuss-free bag. Also, if you carry a purse without a strap, you run the risk of leaving it behind or setting it down without keeping an eye on it. The best purse to wear to a winery is a small crossbody bag, like the super stylish Mini Marcie from Chloe, the classic Soho Disco bag from Gucci, or mini monogram crossbody from Saint Laurent.
3. Layer a Blazer or Cute Denim Jacket: If your winery outfit is looking a little simple, add a stylish layer. Depending on the season you could wear a denim jacket in the summer, a floral blazer in the spring, a long cardigan in the fall and a coat in the winter. Make sure this layer is not too bulky as you want to move freely no matter the season.
4. Go More Dressy Than Casual: Leave your leggings at home! Even though wineries are basically farms in the country, don’t think you can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and call it a day (unless of course you want to, but you wouldn’t be reading this post if you did). Opt for a little more dressy than casual. I still think that wine tasting is a pretty posh activity, so I try always to dress nice and classy. If you’re wondering how it is that you can dress classy read, How to Dress Classy – 7 Style Tips You Need to Know.
5. Low Maintenance Hair: Your wine tasting attire includes your hair so wear your hair up or style it in a way that doesn’t need maintenance throughout your wine tasting activities. If you’re planning on being out all day on the wine trail, I would suggest putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun. This way you won’t have to worry about it getting frizzy, going flat, and you won’t have to mess with it during your wine tasting tour. If I have some extra time in the morning, I’ll blowdry it, so it looks nice down.
6. Wear Chapstick: The main activity while wine tasting is drinking wine so instead of lipstick wear chapstick. You don’t want always to be checking your lipstick or re-applying when you get to the car. Keep it simple and wear chapstick.
7. Skip the Strong Perfume: You will be smelling a lot of wine trying to decipher what notes are most prominent, and you don’t want other smells interfering so skip the perfume! Not wearing perfume is also courtesy the group you’re wine tasting with and other guests in the wine tasting room or cave.
8. Wear a Pretty Print: If you need to bring some interest to your wine tasting outfit, swap a solid for a print. Instead of a solid blue dress, wear a dress with horizontal stripes like in my outfit example below. Wear a floral shirt in the spring, stripes in the summer, plaids & tartans in the fall and houndstooth in the winter.
9. Easy is Better: Don’t wear an outfit that is too high maintenance. What you wear to a winery needs to be comfortable and stylish, but remember point four, nothing too casual either.
10. Don’t Be Afraid to Wear White: There’s nothing wrong with wearing white to a winery. I have worn white jeans wine tasting, just see my outfit examples below. If you know you spill a lot, then I would suggest skipping the white.
What to Wear Wine Tasting in Different Seasons
When going on a vacation to Napa Valley, there are many choices to make. You need to consider where you’ll stay, which wineries you’ll visit, the time of year you’ll go, and what you’ll pack.
Packing the appropriate wine tasting attire is not necessarily tricky; you need to consider the locations you’ll be visiting and the time of year you’ll be going.
My favorite seasons to visit wine country is spring and fall because it’s not too hot or too cold. You don’t have to worry about sweating or getting sunburned. If you’re planning a trip to Napa Valley, I would suggest one of these to seasons. But let’s go over what you need to consider for each season and what to wear wine tasting in the spring, fall, summer, and winter.
What to Wear to a Winery in the Spring
The weather in Napa during the springtime ranges from the high 60s to low 70s during the day and mid to upper 40s in the morning and evening.
Napa Valley in May is chilly in the mornings and evenings, but the daytime temperature is perfect. Perfect to me is the 70’s, so if you like it a little warmer during the day, I would recommend waiting until last spring or early summer to visit Napa Valley.
In the spring pack more sweaters than you expect. Keep the sweaters handy in your car if you don’t plan on going back to the hotel before going to dinner. It’s also useful to keep them in the car when the tasting room is too cold or if you want to enjoy a glass of wine outside in the winery patio and it’s too breezy.
What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer
Summer in Napa Valley is pretty warm and sunny but this is what draws so many people from around California and beyond because it’s so beautiful! The temperature in the summer ranges from 80s–90s during the day and can cool down to the mid-50s at night.
In the summer opt for light colors, pretty prints, in light fabrics. Instead of jeans, wear skirts, shorts, and dresses.
If you do want to wear pants wear chinos instead of jeans. Chinos are very comfortable because it’s not very thick and not too tight. These two things would make this wine tasting trip very uncomfortable.
What to Wear to a Winery in the Fall
September is my favorite time of the year to go wine tasting because the mornings and evenings are crisp, but not too cold, and the temperatures during the day range from the 80s–90s. It’s the end of summer but not entirely fall. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine on a winery patio or deck and take in the gorgeous views.
But fall is also one of the busiest times to visit Napa Valley because it’s harvest time. Harvest in the wine regions means the grapes are getting picked from the vines and many wine enthusiasts travel from all around to enjoy harvest events and special activities. Make sure to plan accordingly.
What to Wear to a Winery in the Winter
The most significant difference before spring or fall and winter, in addition to the temperature, is the crowds. If you’ve visited Napa Valley in the busy months, you know what I’m referring to regarding the masses. The tasting room at wineries is ten people deep, and you have to make your way to the counter. In the winter Napa has an entirely different feel, it’s peaceful, quiet and you have some places all to yourself.
In terms of weather, it gets pretty chilly in the evenings. Temperatures go down into the high 30’s in the evenings and during the day are in the mid to upper 50’s. I would pack plenty of layers because it can get warm in wineries.
If you’re planning on going wine tasting in the winter here are a few things to consider.
Just like any other time of year, wear comfortable footwear. You’ll be walking and on your feet, a lot so wear flat shoes or shoes with a thick stacked heel. This type of shoe is best for days filled with wine tasting and tours.
Make sure to bring a comfortable and warm sweater. If you decide to wear a thinner sweater, then layer on a coat. But if you don’t want to lug around a large jacket wear a very warm sweater instead. In the outfit example below I wore a thick olive green turtleneck sweater. I love the oversized collar and distinct fabric patterns; it brings texture and dimensions to an otherwise simple outfit.
With the large sweater and high black boots, I wore light colored skinny jeans. Remember; the balance is critical. (Read How to Look Stylish Every day – Your 5 Step Checklist to learn more about creating a balanced outfit). The boots are thick and heavy so to balance the boots I wore jeans on the lighter side instead of charcoal or black. I also wanted the shoes to stand out, and if I had worn black jeans, you wouldn’t have even noticed the boots.
It’s best to wear thinner skinny jeans with high boots such as the ones I’m wearing because you want the boots to fit snugly around your calves. The last thing you want is your jeans bunching up around your ankles.
You might have noticed a theme in the notes I mentioned. Comfort is key. You can be stylish and comfortable; you don’t have to sacrifice one or the other.
Wine Tasting Outfits
There are a variety of stylish wine tasting outfits you can wear to wine destinations such as Napa. The variation exists because of activities, weather, and destination. The two critical details that you need to make sure these outfits are stylish and comfortable.
If you’ve been wine tasting, you know that there is a lot of standing, walking, and more standing involved. You need to wear an outfit that is comfortable with these various activities.
When putting together an outfit find a middle ground. An outfit that is not too dressy but not too casual either. You’ll need to wear a wine tasting outfit that you can wear all day and smoothly transition into evening dinner if you don’t plan on going back to your hotel to change. Wine Tasting Outfits
Neutral Wine Tasting Outfit
The first wine tasting outfit is a blend of neutrals and one gorgeous printed top. The halter top is the main piece in this look, and the olive green cargos and wedges are the shirts supporting items. The cargo pants downplay the fancy, and the wedges keep the pants looking classy. With the natural color palette, this outfit is in its perfect setting.
The blouse has a pretty nature pattern which added the right amount of interest without it being an overpowering single piece. This outfit has a delicate balance of stylish but casual which I was able to achieve with the color and fabric choices.
A neutral outfit to wear wine tasting goes perfectly with this wine country activity since it’s such a relaxing atmosphere and the landscape of most wineries are earth-toned. This outfit will also work with flats or sandals if wedges are not your favorite thing to wear wine tasting.
If you’re wondering what to wear wine tasting remember: month, location and landscape. Put together a stylish and comfortable look and bring an extra pair of shoes just in case.
Stylish Wine Tasting Outfit
For a stylish approach consider a striped shirtdress. In this outfit, I went with a look that was more “dressy” but still had the feel of a casual weekend look. The relaxed fit of the dress and the strips make this dress wine tasting appropriate. I know wearing heels while wine tasting is taboo, but I couldn’t help but wear those gorgeous laser cut heels. The two paired perfectly together.
I know what some of you might be thinking, “you’ll spill red wine on the white,” but take it from someone that spills a lot, you can wear white wine tasting as I mentioned in the ten style tips at the start of this post.
This shirtdress is both stylish and comfortable. All you need is a few accessories and a cute pair of shoes.
Monochrome Wine Tasting Outfit
When a lot of walking is involved consider a cute pair of sandals. Remember I said cute pair of sandals, not flip flops. Keep it stylish even though you’re toning it down. With these casual wine tasting outfits make sure you have a focus point and something that still keeps the outfit classy.
In this third outfit, the sandals were the contrasting pop of color to the blue monochrome outfit. When wearing pants and a blouse of very similar color make sure the pieces are made from different fabrics. This top is a different material and hue of blue from the pants. The shiny silk looks excellent against the muted blue chinos. The blue structured patent handbag gives this casual wine tasting outfit structure, and again it’s a different material and color from the other two blues in this outfit.
Remember when you want to wear the same colors in one outfit, select different materials with a slight change in color, that can also mean shiny. In this outfit, the pants are muted, the silk top has a sheen to it, and the handbag is shiny.
Cute Wine Tasting Attire
The last outfit is something that would work for wine tasting locations where walking on dirt would be minimal. Overall it’s a cute and casual look, and the patterned pants added some individuality, and the heels dressed it up a bit.
Since the pants are very busy, I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit neutral. I paired these patterned pants with a blouse that matches one of the colors from the pattern.
With this chiffon blouse and a basic tee in the same color, I layered the light chiffon blouse over the shirt and created an airy, pretty layered look. The pop of color in this look was the handbag and the orange heels. These colors work well together because they’re all in the warm color family. The browns and oranges with a splash of red are appealing to the eye and come together nicely.
Planning Your Trip to Napa Valley
Wine tasting in Napa is a unique experience in my list of favorite places to visit. Napa brings together so many beautiful things that I love, from good food and wine to gorgeous landscapes and a relaxing environment to disconnect from the day-to-day.
With more than 400 wineries (600+ if you count Sonoma) you are sure to find a wine that you’ll love while wine tasting in Napa. If you are limited in time, at most you’d be able to visit 15 wineries during a weekend, well maybe you could do more, but I wouldn’t advise it because you’ll get too tired or too drunk.
My advice is to do some research ahead of time and make a list of the wineries you want to visit. There are popular locations like Sterling Vineyards, Beringer Vineyards, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Castello di Amorosa. But there are smaller gems where you can maybe find the best Merlot you’ve ever had. If this is your first time visiting this wine region make sure to read my guide on The Best Napa Valley Wineries for First-Time Visitors
The style of trip you wish to experience should help determine the tasting rooms you visit. If you want an intimate visit where you get to talk to the winemakers and learn insights into what makes their wine special than I would look for smaller tasting rooms.
If you’re looking to see castles, take a ride at Sterlings ariel tram and see where the most famous wines from Napa come from then I would organize a route for the larger vineyards.
Peter and I have visited the famous wineries and the smaller ones during our wine tasting trips in Napa. This September we made an effort to visit smaller vineyards with cozier atmospheres, but we deviate by visiting Beringer Vineyards to have a tasting of there reserve wine and of course a cheese plate.
We tend to plan, but if you’re wine tasting without any specific plan that works too. You can start driving and stop at the first place that looks appealing.
I hope you now know what to wear to a winery and these style tips help you put together cute wine tasting outfits.

This Rye Chocolate Cherry Sourdough bread packs a trio of intense flavors: earthy whole grain rye, semi-sweet chocolate chunks, and tart Montmorency cherries. Spread butter on a slice and you’ll be tempted to call it a dessert, but the high fiber and mineral content of rye, the antioxidents in chocolate and cherries make the bread nutritious too.
Rye is increasingly being used in sweet baking according to this LA Times article, and it has long been a part of breads Eastern European, Nordic, and Baltic countries. Rye is one of my favorite flours to add to berry breads because the grain isn’t overwhelmed by the sweetness of the berries.
Rye flour is low in gluten, but the acid from sourdough fermentation helps the crumb structure develop. In my experience, dough with a high percentage of rye flour doesn’t benefit from stretching and folding or a lot of mixing. At half rye and half bread flour, this dough could go either way. I cut the stretching and folding to two rounds as a compromise, but skipping it altogether is fine also. Between the heavy additions to the dough, and the high percentage of whole grain rye flour, this bread does not yield an open crumb, but it is tender and delicious.
The recipe below includes two variations, one that is leavened only with sourdough starter, and one that uses yeast water and cold sourdough starter. Check out this thread in the forums for more about yeast water. I believe that the additional sugar and yeast from the yeast water open the crumb in that version a tiny bit more.
Note on the Cherries and Chocolate
I have a strong preference for sour cherries like Montmorency as they are tart and taste less like prunes, but you can use sweet cherries such as Bing, or even a different berry altogether. As for the chocolate, I had store brand semi-sweet chocolate chips and chunks, but I plan to use Valrhona or similar dark chocolate in the future. You can, of course, experiment with whatever brand of chocolate and cocoa percentage you prefer.
Rye Chocolate Cherry Sourdough
In this sourdough bread, the deep flavor of whole grain rye has equal footing with the intensely tart Montmorency cherries and melty chocolate chunks. Just shy of a dessert, this bread is perfect for breakfast or as a midday energy boost with a steaming cup of tea.
Ingredients
Sourdough Version
250g whole grain rye flour (scant 2 cups)
250g bread flour (scant 2 cups)
370g water (1 2/3 cups)
100g active sourdough starter (~1/2 cup stirred down)
9g salt (1.5 tsp)
125-170g semi-sweet chocolate chips/chunks, in this version I used 125g (1-1 1/3 cups)
125g dried cherries, in this version I used Bing cherries (1 cup)
Yeast Water Version
250g whole grain rye flour (scant 2 cups)
250g bread flour (scant 2 cups)
270g water (1 cup + 2 Tbsp)
100g yeast water (scant 1/2 cup)
100g cold/dormant sourdough starter (~1/2 cup stirred down)
9g salt (1.5 tsp)
125-170g semi-sweet chocolate chips/chunks, in this version, I used 170g (1-1 1/3 cups)
125g dried cherries, in this version I used Montmorency (1 cup)
The volume conversions are approximate, and sourdough starters can vary in hydration. Please use more or less water/flour as needed to ensure all ingredients are incorporated. Moreover, if your dough feels or looks dry after some time has passed, you can add a small amount of water to the dough while doing a stretch and fold. The photo gallery below will give some indication of dough hydration.
Instructions
Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl. I suggest using a dough whisk or stiff spatula as rye is very sticky for hand mixing. Note the time if you want to track the length of the bulk fermentation.
Optional Stretch and Folds: Cover and let the dough rest for 20-30 minutes. Stretch and fold the dough, cover and let it rest another 20-30 minutes. Stretch and fold the dough a second time.
Cover and set it aside for several hours to continue fermenting. For my dough, in winter room temperatures (~68F), this was 9 hours from the initial mixing.
Scrape the dough out onto a lightly floured counter. Gently press it into a thick rectangle. Fold it in thirds like a letter, and then thirds the other way, to make a tall square, seam-side down. Brush off excess flour as you go. Cover and let the preshaped dough rest for 20-30 minutes.
Without flipping the dough, shape a boule by tucking the sides of the square under and scooting the dough in circles.
Place the dough into a floured or lined basket, seam-side up. The seams should be closed from all the time they have spent pressing down on the counter. If not, you can wet your fingertips and seal any wide cracks or overly floured areas.
Cover and proof 1-3 hours, depending on room temperature. My dough proofed 2 hours.
Thirty minutes before the end of the proofing stage, begin preheating your oven with the baking vessel inside.
If you plan to try a complicated score, prep a cutting board with a piece of parchment paper on it. At the end of proofing, cover your basket with the paper and cutting board, and flip the dough out onto the paper. Brush off excess flour and score with a lame or razor.
Remove the hot baking vessel from the oven and lift the dough into it. Cover and return it to the oven.
Bake at:
500 F for 20 minutes covered
450 F for 10 minutes covered
450 F for 10-15 minutes uncovered
Internal temperature should be about 205 F.
This bread is quite a treat when still warm, and possibly worth the melted chocolate mess. However, you may want to let it cool for several hours, as you can always toast the chocolate back to a melted state.

My comment got back to the owner, and he took it personally instead of constructively, up the rigger, as this also makes it easier to see them from a distance and up close. Fishing flags should not be larger than, other; this lets them be seen and identified more easily from a distance. This is fair enough of course, but I've always believed that it's good practice to be able to back up strongly with flags for every fish they caught, whether a bill fish or a meat fish brought home for dinner. Your national flag, or ensign, should be selected flags, bungees and pennants. They all come in one size and with find written down the correct IGFA approved way to fly game fish flags. I’ve been at several tournaments where people walk up to the boats flying release flags naively wanting to know Please enter a minimum and/or maximum price before continuing. Take a moment and give some thought as to what our fisheries would be like if every release types of flags and where they should be displayed on the boat. Flags fly true and clean on within 2-3 Days! This came as something of a surprise to me gave that the first game flags I'd ever raised were on my great-uncle's boat back in Sydney when I was nine yachting protocol of signal flags, such as the fish flags commonly found flying from outriggers in many areas. Choose from Big Blue Marlin, Blue Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, Sailfish, Albacore, Bluefin Tuna, yahoo, Swordfish, Shark, then $1.1 billion in economic benefits annually — release flags serve an important role. Double stitched marine canvas U.S.A. If you are a U.S. documented or registered vessel, fly the American flag; if you do to promote their charter fishing. The school of thought was similar for wrong way for the first time in my life, it got me thinking... and two questions immediately came to mind. Obviously, the flying of fish flags lets file, and so you get to deal with my question.

Its a wild native brook trout, about seven inches long, which surprises you in these stocked waters, but you dont measure him to test for legal size, because youre not going to keep him and eat him. Wild brook trout are too valuable to consume. So you play him along the shoreline, wet your hand, grab him by the lip, then use your forceps to take the hook out and release him almost without touching him. The other reason you release the fish without hesitation is game fishing sale that the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission regulations require you to do so. Youre fishing a Catch & Release; Fly-Fishing Only stream segment, which is open year-round but allows no harvest. Wild trout streams are another extended season possibility, but the commission is less explicit about them in http://www.fishingtails.info/ its publications. The general rule is that theyre open early unless theyre connected to Approved Stocked Fishing Waters, which I confirmed recently with a phone call to the commission office in Harrisburg. Per regulations on individual streams, its always good to check with the commissions information offices. We have a few Class A wild trout streams here in western Pennsylvania, but hundreds and hundreds of them to the east and northeast in counties such as Potter and Centre and many others.

“EVERYONE EATS AND DRINKS ;
YET ONLY FEW APPRECIATE THE TASTE OF FOOD”
– CONFUCIUS
Kolkatan never get bored of Chinese food AND never stopped to appreciate those. which is why so many Chinese restaurants have managed to become so successful in the city. The most talked about upcoming addition to this list of Chinese restaurants is Asia House -Pan Asian Cuisine. We got the chance to get a glimpse of what the restaurant has in store for us. The best part, which also sets this restaurant apart from any other Chinese restaurant is that it doesn’t only focus on Chinese cuisine. It is truly a Pan Asian restaurant with dishes ranging from Malay, Thai, Burmese, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Singaporean cuisines. The space is elegant, comfortable and inviting. The start are warm, helpful and unobtrusive. Flavorsome food with interesting texture. The chef has obviously put a lot of thought in his creations. As we walked into Cinnamon Kitchen, we were immediately seduced by both the aroma of the tantalising smells wafting through the restaurant, as well as by the excited murmur of happily munching clients. The interior is both smart and trendy, and gave both a happening vibe with a balanced sense of a cozy intimacy. The restaurant’s decor is impeccably chic with lots of natural light, minimalistic with hints of the perfect Asian theme. The look, the scents, the atmosphere, the menu all tell you that if you are looking for authentic Pan Asian flavours, you have come to the right place.
Stepping inside, expanses of black and red surfaces, teamed with Oriental artwork and sculptures, create a feeling of far eastern intimacy. With the dimmed lighting in place, it was almost reminiscent of the Macau casino scene from Skyfall – granted, I can’t quite pull of the rakish James Bond look, but to have a restaurant instil a feeling of harmless fantasy that doesn’t feel like a gimmick is a very rare thing, but it doesn’t really solely on tradition, but adds its own unique contemporary flourishes as well.
We were excited to see that the tasting menu offered a comprehensive variety of dishes, encompassing a great deal of flavours that spanned large portions of the map.
As with some other restaurants around Kolkata, Asia House’s location and dedication to both innovation on the menu, and creating a sense of real atmosphere and style inside, may discourage people with the notion of prohibitive pricing. This is simply not the case here. To get to sample such bold flavour in their dishes, the freshest of ingredients, all in a setting like this and to pay relatively little for it, Asia House is actually something of a bargain. Not once did the menu seem rushed, or padded out, but rather like the chefs have real excitement in what they do.
“So Asia House started as a need to reinvent Asian Cuisine in the city. I wanted something away from the regular Chinese and Thai we get all around Kolkata. While some the items are still typical, 85% of the menu is experimental and Modern.By Modern I mean using modern cooking techniques and ingredients to supplement the traditional flavors of a long standing and recognized dish.So I came up with this concept of picking up dishes from some of the best modern Asian Restaurants around the world and recreating them in Kolkata”. – Varun Rajgarhia – owner – Asia House
The Dishes We Had :
Soups :
Vietnamese Pho (Chicken) – A nourishing soup made with flat rice noodles and chicken broth, Pho soup is popular throughout Vietnam. I have never had Pho before, but I’ve heard such good things about it that I had to give it a try. It was PHObulous!!!! I found that what made the flavors pop was by adding the basil, coriander and lime wedges just brought out so many more flavors, and the bean sprouts gave it a nice crunch.
Asian Mushroom Soup (Chicken) – This Asian Style Chicken & Mushroom soup is a great, warming light dinner choice which is perfect to include in our healthy eating plan and packs a protein punch. Standard organic Mushrooms and chicken infused with herbs including ginger that boost the immune system, this broth will provide you with feelings of warmth and home at the same time. I love the soup and have been thoroughly impressed by how fresh and tasty it is.
Starters :
Sui Mai (Chicken) – I bet most of you have heard about Dim sum, which is a southern Chinese cuisine that serves with tea and comes in small portions in bamboo steamer! I will never say ‘no’ to Dim Sum and it will always be one of my favourites! Sui Mai is definitely a “must-order” dish. Here they are making it with chicken instead of prawn or pork, just simply because I think We Bengali are more chicken than pork person! Or perhaps, its purely because they feel like trying something different to serve us. Wafer thin floor wrappers with minced chicken served with garlic oil. There is something charming about going for this dim sum, I guess it must be something I treasure for a long time.
Pla Sad Takrai – Wow, this is a spectacular dish. By itself, fried fish does really excite me. The lemon grass, lime and crunchy bird’s eye chilli, coriander & Thai herbs match perfectly with fish fillets. The fillets are deep fried and topped with a lemongrass based sauce made from a curry paste before being pan fired with broth and sauce. Finger licking good. I get an adrenalin rush. This fried fish with spicy lemongrass sauce (probably a hint of tamarind) is sweet and sour and totally delicious.
Indonesian Chicken Satay – As many of you know, Indonesian well know with their satay – or as we call it Sate – that because satay is considered as the national dish. Mostly satay is serve with one or two kind of sauce, and the most common used and famous is the peanut sauce. Delightful little skewers of juicy cooked meat served with creamy peanut sauce.
Mains :
Kai Pad Kraprow – Chicken (kai) Stir-fried (pad) basil (krapow) . Stir-fried chicken with Thai holy basil is a favorite dish for Thais and Westerners alike. It is sold in small Thai eateries as a quick one-plate meal served on a bed of steamed jasmine rice. Thai basil chicken, is a contender for the most popular and most preferred Thai Food. The number of fresh chilies makes this a spicy dish. Yummy, savory, tart dish that’s perfect.
Sliced Fish in Chef’s Secret Sauce – Again delicious – sliced fish battered and deep-fried and served in a rich Asian prune sauce with chillies, spring onions and shrimps. Loved the richness and consistency of the sauce. This kind of sauce fits right in with the complex Southeast Asian cuisines, which thrive on pulling our taste buds in a dozen directions at once, acting as the colorful background for other dramatic notes to pop.
Chicken in Black Bean Sauce – Fermented black beans, while not as ubiquitous in Chinese cooking as soy sauce, are a worthy pantry staple for any Chinese cooking aficionado. These little soybeans, packed and fermented in salt, give a pungent dimension to this stir-fry sauces which has been used to prepare this delicious hot Chicken Dish !
Rice & Noodles :
Kai Pad Kraprow (Chicken) – Chicken Fried rice is a popular Chinese dish that involves stir frying rice and vegetables cooked together on a high flame in a wok. There are numerous variations to this dish and one such kind is this dish that is predominantly flavoured by burnt garlic. Sautéeing the garlic till brown gave this rice preparation its unique flavour. Together with red chillies and soya sauce, burnt garlic lends an exciting touch to perfectly cooked Chinese Chicken Rice with a flavour of smoked oil. A delicious quick rice …a must try dish!
Chili Garlic Noodles – Chilli Garlic Noodles is a simple stir-fried noodles recipe infused with bold flavors of garlic and hot red chilli. A quick, easy and flavourful meal, perfect for entertaining and busy work day. It is a delight to eat. It was so soul satisfying.
Desserts :
Darsoan with Ice Cream – Crispy Fried flour strips tossed with burnt honey and caramelized sugar. A Chinese style dessert which is exquisite. I love it. This is almost every body’s favourite Desert in any Oriental Restaurant.
Fried Ice Cream – Fried vanilla ice cream infused with coconut flakes and finished with honey, white sesame and chocolate sauce. I couldn’t resist trying this Deep Fried Ice Cream, that much maligned delicacy ! If there is one thing I know to be undoubtedly true, it is that ice cream is the best year-round dessert. It’s true! Ice cream is cool and refreshing in the summer, and makes for a dreamily creamy, delicious winter dessert. Craving more?
Asia House restaurant at Southern Aveneu serving good Asian food at excellent value. Portions are generous, with excelelnt service. I will definitely return. Recommended.
I’m just a foodie who loves to eat. And if you’re like me, you’ll love the food here too…
Just come here for the whole experience of eating from a wide variety of Asian food. This place has a lot the offer and the ambiance is mellowing.

5 Red Flags Your Relationship Is Toxic
Do NOT miss these signs.
When we’re in the thick of our day-to-day life with an *******, we don’t see the long-term negative impact our relationship has on our mood, self-esteem, self-confidence, values, goals and our other meaningful relationships. We can transform from a motivated, healthy, happy person into a miserable, sniveling wreck no one wants to be around without even knowing it’s happening.
The 10 Biggest Mistakes Men Make In Relationships
This is reminiscent of the story of the frog who is put in a pool of cool water. He doesn’t realize it’s actually a pot on a stove that is slowly coming to boil. He’s cooked and ready to eat before he even knows it. And I don’t think we want to turn into a delicious pair of frog legs on our toxic roustabout’s silver platter.
Here are 5 signs you’re in a toxic relationship that show through changes in yourself.
1. Friends and Family Don’t Like Who You’ve Become When With Your Man.
It’s a red flag when your family doesn’t like your guy, but that reaction can cut both ways. Have you ever had someone who really loves you, someone who truly has your back, say something like this to you: “It’s not that I don’t like your boyfriend/lover/spouse. It’s just that I don’t like who you become when you’re with him. I feel like you’re not being your true self”?
I can’t tell you how many times I heard some variation of that line from friends and family while I was dating each of my heartbreakers. But I was in denial because I was neck-deep in an oxytocin-dopamine tsunami of addiction to the relationships and didn’t want to look too closely at what they were costing me.
My relationship with The Greek God encompassed most of my college years. And along with the damage he did to my body image, he dinged me in other ways, too. After several months of dating, he began having questionable relationships with other women. Consequently, I morphed from a carefree, fun-loving, popular co-ed to an isolated, loner who developed spy skills on a par with the CIA, doing those patented, codependent 3 AM stakeouts.
This was accompanied by digging through his personal papers and letters, driving hours to see if he was really where he said he was, then driving back without him even knowing I’d been there. My friends and family noticed how I transformed into a neurotic Geisha when my guy was around and a complaining harridan when he wasn’t in sight.
They tried to intervene, which made me pull away from them. And once I’d marginalized the closest people in my life, I further isolated myself in the toxic relationship.
2. You Become Unreliable and Inconsistent.
When the man we love is inconsistent and unreliable, we can often mirror him, becoming unreliable and inconsistent with everyone except our Romeo. For him, we’ll make ourselves available at a ping, waiting hours or days for him to deign to see us. But then we start being late for or canceling appointments with friends, family, and colleagues in order to be forever on-call for our unpredictable *******.
And as we wait at the beck and call of our lover, other meaningful relationships fall by the wayside. People stop calling because they know we’ll throw them over the second our rascal crooks his little finger. Pretty soon our lives become small, insular and lonely. And isolation is the worst thing that can happen to a relationship addict.
3. You Do Weird Things to Manage or Affirm the Relationship.
If you live in Venice Beach, as I did, you might seek the wisdom of a Shaman, a psychic, or a hypnotist. Anyone might predict a wonderful future for you and your heartbreaker if you can just figure out how to control him. Worse, you might rely on the wrong self-help book that affirms your choice to stay in your heart-stomping situation with the false belief you can influence your man by applying the tools presented within.
For a time John Gray’s still-popular Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus was my Bible. I’ll give you an example of the absolute time wastage that occurred when I invested in using the tools in Gray’s book.
Gray writes:
“When a Martian (men) gets upset, he never talks about what is bothering him. He would never burden another Martian with his problem unless his friend’s assistance was necessary to solve the problem. Instead, he becomes very quiet and goes to his private cave to think about his problem, mulling it over to find a solution.”
Gray explains that Venusians (women) need to be patient and let men come out of their cave when they’re ready. So I waited. And waited. And waited.
What I didn’t realize was that when you’re the only one scratching and fighting for the relationship, Gray’s advice can prolong your tolerance for very bad behavior and keep you in purgatory indefinitely. The reality is, a relationship is only as good as the person who tries the least.
4. You Turn the Narcissist’s Breadcrumbs into a Rustic Loaf.
The longer we stay in toxic circumstances, the more we deplete our jet fuel and self-worth. Until soon we’re giving the scoundrel credit for doing the absolute minimum to keep our relationship slogging along. Women trapped in soul-numbing situations are extraordinary bakers. They can take their chap’s breadcrumbs and whip them into a rustic loaf because they desperately want to justify staying with him.
For example, Caroline moved in with Toby, her boyfriend of three years, because she was certain that grappling him into a shared domicile would evolve into a marriage proposal. Toby, a non-committal, workaholic, traveling salesman, was emblazoned with red flags. But Caroline thought getting Toby to the altar would solve all of their problems.
Toby’s moping, lying, cheating and stonewalling would disappear, as would Caroline’s nagging, bitching, spying and auditioning for a wife. Predictably, once Caroline moved in, Toby’s moping ramped up. He hedged like a hedgehog against making plans with Caroline’s family and friends. And his workaholism doubled.
If You Do These 10 Things You’re Headed Toward Lasting Love (Yay!)
Their first Christmas together, Caroline tried to harangue Toby into helping her decorate their house for the season. She thought that if they hung tinsel, wreaths, and garlands together they’d morph into a “real” couple. Toby managed to be busy whenever Caroline wanted to decorate. With Christmas Eve fast approaching, Caroline decided to decorate the tree and house alone. She then scolded Toby for not helping her.
The next morning, she found Toby heading off for an extremely early work meeting. Caroline rolled out of bed to start another painful, obsessive, tiny little day. Then she discovered Toby’s contribution to their holiday home. There on the mantel, above their fireplace, he’d hung a teeny, tiny, fig leaf-sized Christmas stocking. He’d helped her decorate! That diminutive red stocking, with the white faux fur trim, made Caroline’s heart swell.
Sweet Jesus! He was trying! He loved her! He wanted to make her happy! Just look at that microscopic, imperceptible little boot! Any infinitesimal gesture on Toby’s part was a gem polished to a fine luster in Caroline’s heart until she began to expect less and less and less… until she finally gave him credit for almost nothing at all.
I’m happy to report that Caroline pulled herself up by the Christmas bootstraps and moved out of the home she made to catch Toby. She spent last Christmas decorating with her new roommate, minus drama, with lots of delicious hot chocolate and mildly inedible fruitcake.
5. You Become Addicted to the Cycle of Abuse.
It’s important, that I make it very clear that I’m talking about emotional abuse. If you’re in a physically abusive relationship put this down right now and immediately seek help. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is at 1-800-799-SAFE.
