REVIEW: “The Queen of Nothing” by Holly Black
Title: The Queen of Nothing Series: The Folk of the Air, #3 Author: Holly Black Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers Source: HBG Canada Publication Date: November 19th, 2019 Format: Hardcover Page Count: 308
Plot Summary: After being pronounced Queen of Faerie and then abruptly exiled by the Wicked King Cardan, Jude finds herself unmoored, the queen of nothing. She spends her time with Vivi and Oak, watches her fair share of reality television, and does the odd job or two, including trying to convince a cannibalistic faerie from hunting her own in the mortal world.
When her twin sister Taryn shows up asking of a favor, Jude jumps at the chance to return to the Faerie world, even if it means facing Cardan, who she loves despite his betrayal.
When a dark curse is unveiled, Jude must become the first mortal Queen of Faerie and uncover how to break the curse, or risk upsetting the balance of the whole Faerie world.
The Queen of Nothing on Goodreads | Chapters Indigo | Amazon CA
I received a finished copy from Hachette Book Group Canada in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, before I get into the review can I just say THAT COVER IS GLORIOUS. Like, wow I didn't think it was possible for me to love a cover more than I loved the covers of the first two books of the series.
This review is gonna be really hard to write without spoilers, so bear with me while I avoid spoilers like Jude avoids her feelings.
What I think I enjoyed the most about this book is seeing how the characters have changed over the course of the trilogy. Politics and power games are fun until they aren't. It was interesting to see characters realize that power is important but is it worth everything? Is it worth sacrificing your morals? Is it worth sacrificing others? We see Jude grapple with this the most. It felt like an interesting and rewarding issue for her to contemplate, since her goal when we met her was power at all costs. It's cool to see what's changed and what hasn't changed.
Cardan is, of course, a fun character. We get to see a bit of a different side of him in this book, but I felt it was a breath of fresh air. To me, it made him more complex. I know not everyone will agree with me about the character growth, but I didn't mind it in the case of our two mains.
Some other characters, however, felt like they needed more page time to justify their changes. It didn't feel believable for some, and that was a little jarring.
The power games and politics still play a big part in the story, and of course they're just as fun to read about. I did feel that the short page count meant we lost some complexity, though. The plot twist near the end was also very out of place. It kind of threw me for a loop, and I'm still not quite sure how I feel about it. There are a lot of people saying this book was a let down, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. I didn't love it like I loved The Wicked King (review here), but I did like it.
The Queen of Nothing is the intense finale to the Folk of the Air trilogy. I'm sad to see the series end, but I'll always think fondly of the series. I wasn't blown away by it, but I did enjoy it. The romance, the family, the politics. All are fascinating and compelling. I wish some elements of the story had been handled better or more fleshed out. But I'm glad I read it.

Books! So excited for my first shipment from London. . #RiverRun Books is publishing both #PARKLAND and #COLUMBINE simultaneously on Feb 14. They also distribute to Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and most English-speaking countries outside North America. . This is a new Columbine edition with a new preface I just wrote a few weeks ago—plus all the new material we added over the years (afterword, epilogue, journal scans, school diagram, book club questions—more than 50 pages). This will be the 1st time any of this added material is available outside the U.S. and Canada. . I’m happy to finally see that—and to reach you Australians and others who have had difficulty getting the book. RiverRun is part of @quercusbooks, in the #Hachette group, so it should be much easier to find—same for Parkland. . I will be doing a lot of UK and Australian media, but we’re still coordinating. This is going to be an insane launch week hitting 3 continents at once. (But all from NYC, and then hitting the road on #booktour.) Three Roles Privilege Plays in Nature
“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” – Randy Pausch (Pausch & Zaslow, 2008)
Privilege is defined as a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, n.d.). The irony is that those who tend to have more privilege, tend to notice it less. You’ve probably heard of white privilege, gender privilege, heterosexual privilege, and even socio-economic privilege, but if you have most of these privileges, how often do you notice them? Whether you’ve witnessed it, experienced it, or haven’t at all, privilege is everywhere, even in nature. But what role does it play?
“Black Lives Matter Protest” by Patrick Behn is licensed under (”Pixabay License”)
1. The Gatekeeper
Many of us wouldn’t think of nature parks or areas as an exclusive area. However, language, culture, education, and economic status are all factors that impact who visit. For example, many nature parks (especially those big enough to have interpreters) are in remote areas with majority lacking public transportation, making personal vehicles a necessity to get there. While this may not be a problem for some, it prevents 20.8% of Canadians who don’t have access to a car from visiting these areas (Statista Research Department, 2020). This socio-economic factor is just one of the ways privilege plays the role of the gatekeeper. Having the ability to speak the local language, sharing the same culture of the general population of the area, and having the education to realize the benefits of nature, are all ways that privilege acts as a gatekeeper of nature.
“Safari Tour” by Sandip Patel is licensed under (”Pixabay License”)
2. The Manager
If you think accessing a nature site is a privilege, you can imagine what kind of privilege it is to be able to work in one. The minimum requirements to become a nature interpreter includes an undergraduate-degree in a nature-related field, no criminal record, and usually a certificate in first-aid. While this already limits those, who come from a lower socio-economic background with limited access to education this is only the basic requirements. In an ironic sense the field of nature interpretation often tries to have interpreters that visitors can relate to. While this can be a positive thing, most visitors are those with privileges of higher socio-economic backgrounds and certain cultures. This means that often when hiring, managers will choose those who best represent the visitors, which are usually the higher class non-minority groups. This leads to privilege seeking its way into the visitor and the worker side of nature.
3. The Teacher
By playing the role of manager and gatekeeper privilege has gained a third role, the teacher. The unequal balance between societal categories in nature, has shown interpreters like Roberts, James and Ginder, and many others, the social segregation of working with and experiencing nature (as cited in Beck et al., 2018, p. 135). This has led to the field of nature interpretation attempting to combat these privileges through culture (hiring more minorities as staff to help encourage minority visitors), language (having media and signage in multiple different languages), and advertising (reaching out to minority populations through advertising, and personal invitations) (Beck et al. 2018).
“Welcome sign in Thailand National Park” by Anasztazia from Colourbox
While we can’t control what privileges we’re given, by learning about the ones we have, we can help to share them with those that don’t.
For me that’s what privilege is; an uncontrollable advantage given to a person or group so that they can use it to help those without.
What are your privileges?

Lennie Goodings on Virago & her new memoir A Bite from the Apple
Virago is a London-based British publishing company committed to publishing women's writing and books on "feminist" topics. Established by women in the 1970s in tandem with the Women's Liberation Movement (WLM), Virago has done much to address inequitable gender dynamics in the publishing world, and, unlike anti-capitalist publishing ventures, has branded itself a commercial alternative in a male dominated publishing industry, seeking to compete with mainstream international presses.
Initially known as Spare Rib Books, Virago was founded by Carmen Callil in 1973 primarily to publish books by women writers. From the get-go the company sought two sorts of books: original works, and out-of-print books by neglected female writers. The latter were reissued under the "Modern Classics" label, which launched in 1978
In 1982, Virago became a wholly owned subsidiary Random House, USA, but in 1987 Callil, Lennie Goodings and others put together a management buy-out. After a downturn in the market, the board decided to sell Virago to Little, Brown, of which Virago became an imprint in 1996 (with Lennie as Publisher). In 2006, Virago became part of the Hachette publishing group with Lennie acting as editor and publisher. She is now Chair of Virago.
Today the company's stated mission is to "champion women’s voices and bring them to the widest possible readership around the world. From fiction and politics to history and classic children’s stories, its writers continue to win acclaim, break new ground and enrich the lives of readers."
I met Lennie via Zoom to talk about her life with Virago, as described in her new memoir A Bite from the Apple, published by OUP around the world, and by mighty Biblioasis in Canada.

Publishers
Boreal Forest in Canada, where Resolute Forest Products have unsustainably sourced wood. Image by Lake Winnipeg Foundation.
The most prominent publishers today all have a page on their websites dedicating their commitment to sustainability. Penguin Random House promises to obtain paper only from Forest Stewardship Council, or FSC, certified sources in 2020.1 Hachette Book Group wants 95% of its paper to be from these sources and promises consumers it will not take part in the illegal logging trade.2 Harper-Collins brags that 90% of their paper is already FSC-certified and also condemns illegal logging. 3
In the public sphere, these companies have done the best to prove they're serious. When Canadian company Resolute Forest Products sued U.S. non-profit Greenpeace for defamation, all three of the aforementioned publishing houses announced their support of the NGO and reiterated their commitments to sustainability. Resolute had been accused by Greenpeace of unsustainable, indigenous-unfriendly logging practices.4
But in the private sphere, things are a bit iffier. According to the Rainforest Action Network, Harper Collins and Penguin Random House are not transparent enough in their paper sourcing. On top of this, they accuse the later of accepting paper certified by untrustworthy organizations, as well as the FSC.5
But even the FSC itself might not be trustworthy. In 2018, Greenpeace announced they w ere severing its ties to the organization due to its own lack of transparency. They also accused them of being lenient with their certifications.6 They were right. Four major FSC-certified companies have been accused or prosecuted for participation in the illegal logging trade.7
So, while the private sector has certainly made advances in sustainable sourcing, they can't be relied on solely. Non-profits like Greenpeace can apply pressure, but as Brazil shows, government power can override even the most stringent of activism. Therefore, both political and public pressure will be needed to ensure deforestation, and other unsustainable pulp and paper industry policies, are eliminated.

Title: Capturing the Devil Author: Kerri Maniscalco Publisher: Jimmy Patterson Source: HBG Canada Publication Date: September 10th, 2019 Format: Hardcover Page Count: 453
Plot Summary: In the shocking finale to the bestselling series that began with Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas are on the hunt for the depraved, elusive killer known as the White City Devil. Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London they knew. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World's Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.
Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they've heard of before. Capturing the Devil on Goodreads | Chapters Indigo | Amazon CA
I received a finished copy from Hachette Book Group Canada in exchange for an honest review.
Historical mysteries are my bread and butter. My cup of tea. My homemade pizza. My dream books. Stalking Jack the Ripper was a dark, sexy, and witty novel; it was with much excitement that I settled in to read the finale. Hold onto your hats, folks. Because this book was a wild ride.
First and foremost, the main driving force of this book is, unsurprisingly, the romance. I love their banter, their support for one another, and their passion for one another. I love seeing how their relationship has grown since the first book. I didn't love some of the relationship drama present in the book, as the way they handled it felt a little out of character. It frustrated me a bit. But overall, I ship them so hard you guys.
The mystery in this one is a bit more comple and drawn out. I love that Maniscalco ties in fiction with some people and places from history to give the book that much more of a creepy vibe. I love historical fiction, so these little inclusions and nods to history interest me and make the story more compelling.
Maniscalco writes in such a way that draws you into the story, and keeps you guessing. It was fun to slip into this world once again. I also enjoyed trying to guess who the killer is. It's so easy for me to immerse myself in the book, to totally zone out into it. And for me that means it's well written.
As usual, some of the characters make frustrating decisions, and I won't lie: that detracts from my enjoyment of the story. As I mentioned above, the romantic drama was not my favourite. Indeed, I felt it hindered the book a bit.
Capturing the Devil was a captivating read (pun intended). I enjoyed the mystery and the romance, but not so much the drama and some decisions the characters make. Overall, I'm happy with where the story leaves the characters.
