Habemus titles - Gwynriel + Elucien fanfiction

(Or, I found yet another way to flex my knowledge of Latin and chemistry)

I literally have a biochem PowerPoint doc open on my laptop as I write this. I should be studying. I couldn't care less.

As most of us writers know and experience, long showers are an endless source of inspiration.

I washed my hair yesterday. It was... productive.

So, without further ado:

Gwynriel: Nucleosynthesis

Stellar nucleosynthesis is the process by which elements are created in the nucleus of a star. I learned this in my Inorganic Chemistry 2 course last year, and I've been thinking about it ever since.

The title fits pretty nicely in the "space" theme of the Under the Stars series, and it's also indicative of the STEM-ish plot lines and worldbuilding that I decided to give this story and the Dawn Court as a whole.

Just to drive this point home, the chapter titles will be named after the elements that can be produced in the core of a star—that is, all the elements up to nickel except for hydrogen, which is the starting material.

(If you really want to know, heavier elements can only be produced by the explosion of a supernova.)

I've been literally patting my back for more than half a day at this point. I'm so proud of this title.

Elucien: Sol niger

Sol niger means "black sun" and refers to nigredo, the first stage of the alchemical magnum opus. The chapter titles will have something to do with the sun, as well; I'm thinking of naming them something like Flare, Corona, Eclipse, etc.

I'm sure you can understand the reason behind the "sun" part of this title, but why does this sun need to be black, of all colors?

Nigredo, as the first step towards obtaining the philosopher's stone, is the stage in which all alchemical elements need to be "cooked" together to achieve decomposition and putrefaction. It's a rotten, messy thing, then, but one which ultimately leads to perfection and success.

Remember what I said in my latest post about this story? Among other things, I told you that there would be a third POV, and that I may or may not kill Beron off.

Well, I can now tell you that the third POV is

drum roll

Eris, and all this "black" stuff refers to him and his crusade against his cruel father.

Some real swell stuff, as you can see.

But on the flip side, his hounds will make more than one appearance! So at least I can say that there are some happy things in this plot line, as well.

Task: choose TEN SONGS that describe your personal aesthetic / how you see yourself. Bonus points if you write a little explanation for each song, that‘s not a must though.

The Stone Roses - I Am The Resurrection: First of all, I love how the instruments take the lead role in the second half of the song, though the bassline and the beat are catchy from start to finish. 

Linkin Park - Somewhere I Belong: A perfect combination of electronic sounds and electric guitars. Lyrics-wise, it manages to voice the words many of us are unable to find at times and allows us to realize there are people feeling the same way.

The Smiths - Still Ill: The somewhat upbeat guitar melody and the haunting lyrics make such a great contrast, talking of longing for a past that will never return.

A Day To Remember - Mr. Highway’s Thinking of The End: The lyrics being about people attempting to undermine your achievements; plus the off-beat breakdown makes everything better!

Enter Shikari - The Last Garrison: What can I say about this song? I just love every part of it! The modulated guitars, the overall uplifting message reminding us that we cannot outrun our inevitable fate, and that we shouldn’t be afraid of this, but instead smile and be happy that we have been fortunate enough to experience life despite all odds.

The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows: Such a innovative song for its time, using tape loops, drone swell chords and compressed drums that sound like they were recorded underwater, as well as Lennon’s vocals going through a leslie speaker. All of these revolutionary features, and still the highlight of this song is the title based on one of Ringo’s usual malapropisms when being interviewed.

Ramones - My Brain is Hanging Upside-Down: This one is more of the attitude to which the song is played and sung, as to the actual lyrics, though it is still relevant today when seeing how politicians behave at times.

The Cure - Jumping Someone Else’s Train: It has both a groovy bassline, jangling guitar chords and a high-attack, fast drum beat, with Robert Smith singing about the hype people feels when trying to fit a social circle, jumping into new trends since the old ones start feeling boring each time, learning how to adapt your behavior in order to avoid being left out by your peers. To think he was referencing the mod revival’s fad during the late 1970′s.

Radiohead - Where I End and You Begin: Another bass-leading song, who could have seen it coming? no but it also features a wall of sound from the ondes Martenot (weird piano-like instrument that uses a string to play it), a “walking” drum beat and lyrics that imply the bitter fate of a relationship.

Joy Division - Disorder: This song grabs your attention right from the moment you hear the first drum beats and the bass appears, then Ian Curtis starts singing about him wondering why he does not feel as happy as everyone he’s come to know appears to be. He ultimately realizes that once people gets to “be normal”, they then lose what it means to “be human”, one’s individuality.
