DIGITAL ETHNOGRAPHY
For this weeks task I chose London based artist and writer Florence Given. This year at only 20 years old she was named Cosmopolitan Influencer of the Year 2019.
Being an illustrator and public figure, Given aims to empower women to embrace their sexuality and speak out against toxic patriarchal ideals, such as slut-shaming. Given is very active on Instagram however this year she has been appearing on TV and Radio, spreading her iconic slogan âDUMP HIMâ and other feminist messages which appear on prints, tops and tote bags.
In an interview she reveals that she has struggled with burnout and imposter syndrome before, by overworking herself and struggling to say no to things which werenât good for her mental health. This gives us an insight into what can happen behind the social media front.

Here are some screenshots I took from her Instagram story giving an insight into what she gets up to. She is incredibly open to all her followers online as is not afraid to speak her mind.

âEdgar, you sly old fox!â - Edgar Balthazar
Edgar Balthazar is the main antagonist in Disney's 1970 animated film The Aristocats, a favourite of mine from when I was younger. He was the loyal butler to rich Madame Bonfamille, until he found out that she was going to leave her entire fortune to Duchess and her kittens instead of him, making him greedy and determined not to let anyone stand in his way of getting the fortune himself.
Edgar is portrayed as a polite and sophisticated butler, yet underneath his exterior is a scheming, greedy, and impatient man. Whilst Edgar may be arrogant and greedy, he isnât inherently cruel like other Disney villains such as Cruella de Vil. He is far more bumbling and clumsy than villainous, more misunderstood - as shown when he didn't hear about the entire truth of the will and jumped to conclusions.

âItâs important for women and non-binary people to share their desires and sexual experiences since representations of eroticism in comics and illustration are dominated by the cis-male perspective,â comic book artist and illustrator Tara Booth tells Itâs Nice That.
Tara Booth creates bold, brave drawings in her book Nocturne, which addresses and challenges conventional representation of womens sexual fantasies through her unique style and relatable characters. The book draws on issues of mental health, anxiety, consent and imsomnia. Her illustrations combat the stigmas associated with female eroticism, and in the book wanted to feel open about her sexuality and empower, whilst still embracing the silliness of it.
