Cảm ơn Vietnam! 🇻🇳
This country feels incredibly raw, and I can't get enough of it. At first it comes off as chaotic and intimidating. Crossing the street seems like a death sentence waiting to happen between the sea of motorbikes constantly honking, crooked sidewalks with tripping hazards, and mixed smells of food, sewage, and cigarettes. But once you realize the city is actually quite safe and the people are so friendly, all those first impressions melt away to reveal an inviting culture that works so hard for so little and yet they seem so happy
Sidewalks are meant for food, not a path to walk on. Imagine sitting on a tiny stool. With another tiny stool as your table. You're drinking draft beer that was made that morning. In front of you is a plate of something or other, a dipping sauce, and a side of herbs and greens. Simple, delicious, and fresh from the cook who made it less than 5 ft away from you.
Biking through the Ha Giang mountains will forever be one of my most cherished traveling memories. The landscape twists and turns, leaving a masterpiece of rocky mountains mixed with lush trees that create deep valleys and lead to flowing rivers. At times the clouds create deep mists that mask the mountains slightly, giving off mysterious vibes. I can picture dragons appearing above the horizon and descending into the valleys below. It leaves a feeling of wonder, that there is magic still left in this world.
The locals we met were all so open and friendly. Always drinking, eating, and singing karaoke where they could. Riding through the remote villages, people were harvesting corn, roasting meat over an open fire, laundry was out to dry. Children carrying babies on their backs while walking along the road unsupervised, smiling and waving at you as you ride by saying "Xin Chao!"
I'm overcome by an intense feeling of gratitude for life. And it's a feeling i don't think I'll ever forget. It's a feeling of freedom that I want to keep with me going forward as I go back to my daily life. That this world and this life is beautiful. To live simply, connect authentically with others, and enjoy all it has to offer.
