Our steamer was crossing the Gulf of Mexico and approaching the mouth of the Mississippi river. As the sun went down a cold and furious blast from the north came down suddenly upon us. The darkness became intense. Here and there were shoals and other dangers. Great anxiety prevailed among all on board. Suddenly came a shout from the sailor on the forward, “There’s the light.” The joyful sound rang through the ship, to the great relief of every passenger. The true position of the steamer was now known. Anxiety was over, and quietness in a sense of safety was restored. We were soon in the quiet waters of the river. ~ H.B. Hooker

FILM 1689: THE BLUES BROTHERS
TRIVIA: A world-record--at that time--103 cars were wrecked during filming. This feat was exceeded two years later, when 150 cars (and a plane) were crashed for H.B. Halicki's The Junkman (1982). That record in turn held for two decades, until over 300 cars were wrecked during the filming of The Matrix Reloaded (2003).
During filming one of the night scenes, John Belushi disappeared and could not be located. Dan Aykroyd looked around and saw a single house with its lights on. He went to the house and was prepared to identify himself, the movie and that they were looking for Belushi. Before he could, the homeowner looked at him, smiled and said, "You're here for John Belushi, aren't you?" The homeowner then told them Belushi had entered their house, asked if he could have a glass of milk and a sandwich and then crashed on their couch. Situations like this prompted Aykroyd to affectionately dub Belushi "America's Guest."
John Belushi was nicknamed "The Black Hole" on the set, as he went through hundreds of pairs of sunglasses during production. He would do a scene and then lose the pair before filming the next one.
Carrie Fisher became engaged to co-star Dan Aykroyd during this shoot shortly after he saved her from choking by applying the Heimlich maneuver.
Some of the performers were not used to lip-syncing to their pre-recorded songs, the standard procedure for movie musicals. James Brown ended up singing his number live with a recorded backing (the rest of his choir was lip-syncing). John Lee Hooker's performance of "Boom Boom" was recorded live at Chicago's Maxwell Street Market. Aretha Franklin's performance is cut together from many, many takes, using the parts where her lip-syncing was actually in sync.
When recording the soundtrack for the movie, Cab Calloway was needed to record his hit "Minnie the Moocher" in better quality than his original album. When he came into the studios he was prepared to do his new disco version that was just released. Of course, the filmmakers wanted nothing to do with this and asked for the original version, which Calloway reluctantly gave them.
The young woman in the choir at The Triple Rock Church is R & B singer Chaka Khan.
At the Bob's Country Bunker gig, Jake introduces "Stand By Your Man" by saying it's a favorite of the horn section. The horn section doesn't play in the song.
DIRECTOR CAMEO: John Landis: the state trooper driving the second car, the one that shows up after the first car calls for backup, that chases the Bluesmobile through the shopping mall.
DIRECTOR TRADEMARK: John Landis: [filmmakers] Appearances by directors Frank Oz and Steven Spielberg.
DIRECTOR TRADEMARK: John Landis: [SYNW] a billboard advertising the fictional horror movie "See You Next Wednesday" is seen during the Good Ole Boys chase.

Belton officer accused of sexually assaulting female inmate
BELTON, Mo. — A 35-year-old Belton police officer is charged in Cass County with two counts of ‘sexual conduct with a prisoner’ after a woman being held at the jail reported the officer sexually assaulted her.
Warning: Some of the details of the story will be inappropriate for some readers.
According to the complaint, the female inmate says she asked Emmanuel Wilbourn for some water. Then she asked for food, but she claims when he returned with the plate of food, he unzipped his pants and put on a condom. She says he then assaulted her, first orally and then by removing one of her pant legs and penetrating her. Then she says he grabbed some tissues and left the cell.
Once the woman reported the assault, investigators pulled surveillance video of her cell. They say they discovered:
At 2:21 a.m., lights were turned out.
At 4:07 a.m, someone enters her cell and exits a minute later.
At 4:09 a.m., someone enters the cell and exits again a minute later.
At 4:15 a.m., someone enters her cell.
The video does not show anyone exiting her cell; the next entry doesn’t occur until approximately 8:00 a.m., when the lights were turned back on. However, a separate surveillance video from the jail office camera shows the defendant enter the jail office, pull something paper-like from his pants pocket and throw it in the trash can. He then reattaches his belt and takes the trash bag out of the office.
Investigators then went looking for the condom the inmate claimed the officer took with him when he left her cell. They found a large trash bag in the laundry bag with a smaller bag inside it that contained a used condom wrapped in paper towels. Investigators collected the victim’s bedding for evidence.
During the rape examination, the woman told the investigator that she was a hooker and that she had sex before with Wilbourn, charging him $60 for straight sex.
When Wilbourn was brought in for questioning and waived his right to remain silent, he told police he had known the woman for about six months. He says he met her when she was in the jail before, that he felt sorry for her and took food and clothes to her and her children.  He says they had sex at the hotel where he met her to give her these items.
He told police he knew what he did was wrong, but that she was pressuring him to release her from jail and she ‘caught him in a weak moment.’
