With a title like that, who couldn’t fail to be intrigued? 😂 Shit Cassandra Saw was described as a mixture between Margaret Atwood meets Buffy in these funny, warm and furious stories of women at their breaking points, from Hellenic times to today. Yes please. And as soon as I gave bestie @keeperofpages a heads up, we knew we had to buddy read this together. ⁣ ⁣ As with many short story collections (which I rarely give five stars), I did prefer some stories to others but I have to say, I think this is a collection that could be appreciated even more on a second reading. Several stories, like the title story for example, were pure genius and makes you look at the word Trojan in a whole new light. 😂 Others, like A Few Normal Things That Happen A Lot will blow you away with the creativity, imagination and direction that the narrative takes you on. ⁣ ⁣ Each story feels empowering, thought-provoking and beautifully structured, whether it be normal prose or an experimentation with other devices, like a Yelp review or a wikiHow article. The female protagonists in Kirby’s stories are unashamedly and loudly present, telling their tales in a glorious, memorable way and simply refusing to be secondary characters or pushed to the side anymore!⁣ ⁣ I can’t wait to see what the author does next. ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookreviewsoninsta #bookreviewsoninstagram #shitcassandrasaw #gwenekirby #shortstorycollectionreview #buddyreadswithjanel #feministshortstories #booksthatcapturetheimagination #booksthatcatchyoureye https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckyv7osLe74/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone, I’m so glad it’s Friday! It’s been quite a week and I’m looking forward to telling you all about three new books I’ve added to my collection. I’ve just recently finished Shit Cassandra Saw and really enjoyed it. This is a feminist short story collection and is described as Margaret Atwood meets Buffy in these funny, warm and furious stories about women at their breaking point. Review to follow! Tomb Of Sand was a no brainer after it won the Booker International prize this year. It follows an eighty year old woman who slips into a deep depression after the death of her husband then resurfaces to gain a new lease on life. Finally, The Retreat. Since childhood, Sandra has been fascinated by the small, private island of Lieloh. Sandra is now in her forties and works as a receptionist but still harbours artistic ambitions. She sees an advert for a two weeks artistic retreat on Lieloh and resolves to set out on what might be a life-changing journey. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhauler #booksforlife📚 #newbooksplease #shitcassandrasaw #gwenekirby #tombofsand #geetanjalishree #tiltedaxispress #booksintranslation #daisyrockwell #theretreat #alisonmoore #booksimexcitedabout #booksineedtoread #feministshortstories https://www.instagram.com/p/CiS8gnJLz0N/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
