Gwen is very comfortable with state violence. She saw Lena trying to murder someone on tape and said “damn, that should be me, I’d be so much better at that.” She believes the authorities above OIAR can demand the murder of a frightened man begging for mercy and she’s fine with it. But when she understood the true nature of the violence of the OIAR, it horrified her. The externals are varying degrees of disgusting and absurd and cruel and there are no barriers between them and Gwen. She is a frail mortal human and there is nothing standing between her and Chester rattling off the details of her gruesome death - not her family’s (implied) wealth and privilege, not her authority as a government employee, not even physical force. Gwen wanted to make a career out of being the bestest cog in the cold machine of death and instead she was plunged directly into a grotesque horror fiction exaggeration of how stupid and evil and murderous the British government and modern society can possibly be.
We saw Gwen tentatively start trying to talk to Sam about this like a human being. We also saw her power-tripping on the idea that this is some kind of “promotion” and demanding her coworker account for showing up at work 10 seconds after Gwen did. Really excited to see if Gwen is going to firmly join the protagonists or if she’s going to ignore everything she’s learned and develop into an antagonist (or she’s bald/some other infinitely nuanced option). Tbh I’m kind of leaning towards the former because uh. Frankly I don’t know if she has what it takes to survive if she keeps going down the villainy road! No one is going to help her down that way, including Lena! A lot of people seem to be comparing Gwen to Jon Archivist, and in that vein I could see Gwen being more or less on the “side” of Sam and Alice and them all, but still alienated from them for a long period because of how rude and sketchy she’s been.
