Yes, I need these two to work together to make a trading company on Thunder Junction. That or they need to be rivals complete with stage robberies. I just need them both to be on the plane.

I’m Back
Hello everyone. I know I haven’t posted in a while because I doubt anyone actually reads these but I decided to start posting again for my own benefit. From now on I’m writing just for me and me alone to track my progress kind of like a diary or journal.
Overall I decided to stop going to FNM on a regular basis but I go to my LGS’s casual commander events which are every day but I go mostly on Monday and sometimes Friday depending on my work schedule. I bring two decks depending on my mood and so far I have at least one official win for each one except for Kumena. My most recent victory is one of my favorites. A few weeks ago I brought Yisan just to take him for a test run and to my surprise I actually pulled off a win. I got his infinite mana combo (Karametra’s Acolyte/Circie of Dreams Druid + Temur Sabertooth + Wirewood Symbiote + any low cost elf) which I was proud of. I think the reason I won was because I got Seedborn Muse in my opening hand and was able to get it out quickly with mana dorks allowing me to quickly get Yisan to eight verse counters and win with Craterhoof Behemoth like any mono-green deck.
Speaking of Yisan I can’t express how excited I am for the etched foil version in the upcoming Commander Masters set. I have every printing of it so far so I’m glad to be able to add at least two more to the collection. I still have my fingers crossed there will be a borderless profile version like with other legendary creatures in this set. I keep refreshing the preorder page for the etched foil version for when they’re in stock and the variants for when new ones are added.
Other cards I’m looking forward to are, or course, a MUCH-NEEDED reprint for Capture of Jingzhou for another extra turn spell to put into my Narset deck. To make room I’m cutting Aminatou’s Augury because I don’t feel like it fits the theme of the deck. I also got four copies of Personal Tutor since I have so many blue commanders built around noncreature spells. During my hiatus I decided to upgrade Gwafa Hazid by adding five fetch lands and cutting the cards like Evolving Wilds and the cycling lands that come into play tapped. If I see any use for Personal Tutor it’s Gwafa Hazid to use it to tutor my win con spell Approach of the Second Sun. I’m definitely looking forward to this set.
I don’t know when I’ll post again but that’s it for now. Since I don’t go to FNM anymore I’ll just post when the mood strikes just to share my thoughts.

I legitimately won a game yesterday with my new(ish) Gwafa Hazid deck, so I’m happy to announce that the deck seems to work!
The biggest takeaway I can get from that game is that Smothering Tithe is a broken card against more than one player. Between Jace’s Archivist and Folio of Fancies I generated 30+ Treasure tokens in one turn and set myself up to cast Approach of the Second turn twice the next turn. It was a crazy game, but I’m always glad when one of my silly decks manages to do something cool and pull off a win.

DETAILED
Personality: Nicol Bolas is cruel, deceitful and amoral. He stands above morality and the petty concerns of lesser beings. A cruel entity, taking pleasure of the suffering of others, he does not care for the lives of souls of others. Even gods are naught but kindling to him.
Powers: archmagi, artifice savant, master manipulator, grand general, planeswalker, maddening touch
Bio: Planeswalker. Elder Dragon. Tyrant of Worlds. Nicol Bolas is one of the oldest known beings in the Multiverse - he has lived for many millennia. His malevolence is matched only by his boundless intellect.Nicol Bolas has survived multiple wars, cataclysms, and rivalries: the dragon war that left only five of the elders alive, the destruction of his Madaran Empire on Dominaria at the hands of Tetsuo Umezawa, and epic duels with the planeswalkers Leshrac and Teferi.Before The Mending, planeswalkers were ageless shapeshifters whose power was limited only by their experience and knowledge. Bolas had that godlike power torn away from him, and he will go to any lengths to get it back. But it will take countless machinations and maneuverings, even for the oldest and most powerful planeswalker of all. For Nicol Bolas, all the power in the Multiverse is not enough.
The efforts and sacrifices of Teferi and his allies to repair the time rifts that swept over Dominaria gave rise to the Final Mending, a sweeping change that repaired the rifts and altered the metaphysics of the planeswalker spark itself. This change to the spark affected Nicol Bolas too. The change has begun to whittle away at the dragon’s vast knowledge, diminishing his capacity to maintain his immense share of the multiverse’s power, pulling him farther and farther away from his goal of godlike omnipotence. He is aware of this; he can feel his memory and strength beginning to crumble bit by bit. And he’s not happy about it.
Bolas left Dominaria as it crumbled in the time before The Mending, implying that it couldn’t be saved. "I have prepared a suitable place for myself in that eventuality,” he said before departing through the Talon Gates. Thereafter he hides out, observing the effects of the Mending throughout the multiverse, and watching the deterioration happening inside his very soul. For the first time in thousands of years, the clock has actually begun to tick for Nicol Bolas. Hence, his preferred strategy of attaining power - a protracted patience for accumulating knowledge and influence via cunning schemes that span millennia - may not work for much longer. He needed a plan, one that can help him recover his power, or at least stop it from ebbing steadily away - and soon.
He formed a plan to head off this brutal decay, and to not only restore his former glory, but to assume total, unmatched power in the multiverse. Befitting his mighty intellect, his plan has many moving parts, none of which would be obvious to the naked eye. Bolas decides that all he needs is an immense source of mana. To resist the force of the multiverse-wide Mending altering his spark, he’ll need the equivalent of the total potential of an entire world, harvested all at once.The ‘suitable place’ Bolas referred to is the five shards of Alara, which Bolas has been watching for decades. Long ago he began to recruit agents on the shards - individuals and even entire groups who would secretly do his bidding. These agents have subtly, secretly sown the seeds of dissent on each shard, creating chaos and conflict. Why? Only Nicol Bolas knows the truth: The shards of Alara are reconverging into a single plane. And when that reconvergence comes, Bolas wants all-out planar war for reasons unknown to any but himself.
The shard-planes of Alara caught Bolas’s attention soon after he departed Dominaria. Where other planeswalkers saw five separate worlds, Bolas saw a single opportunity. He perceived that the shards had not just originated from a single world, but were destined to come together once more—and soon. He set up a lair on Grixis, using that dark world as a center for his schemes, and over time secretly planeswalked to the other shards, setting up alliances to prepare for the coming Conflux.Over months and years, he recruited minions to do his bidding throughout the five shards. On Bant, he tempted the Order of the Skyward Eye and the conniving merchant Gwafa Hazid to spread xenophobia and disorder along the borderlands of Bant’s nations. On Esper, he infiltrated a group of mages called the Seekers of Carmot, leading them to warn Esperites about dwindling supplies of etherium, and creating a fervent demand for an otherworldly red stone called carmot. On Grixis he recruited the demon dragon abomination Malfegor to lead massive armies of the undead, getting the hordes ready to invade the other shards and cut chaotic swaths through any living resistance they find. On Jund he tempted the elementalist shaman Rakka Mar with promises of power, using her to whip up an itch for greater and greater “life hunts” among the warrior clans there. On Naya his influence has been perhaps the most subtle - even the planeswalker Ajani has had no inkling of the dragon’s presence.During the Conflux, mages all across Alara have realized the power unlocked when they fuse two or more colors of mana. Bant’s spellcasters have known for centuries that multicolor spells are potent, but now all Alarans have learned that a battle strategy gets even more powerful by focusing exclusively on these select, color-blended spells. Nicol Bolas knows this too. His sinister plans on Alara required this massive war, particularly the mage-battles that hurl spell energy to and fro. Bolas’s brutal cross-shard war has served as a crucible, burning away the scrawniest spells, forcing all of Alara to forge the deadliest magical arsenal possible, and to wield these multicolor weapons on the field of battle.
Luckily, he’s still a force to be reckoned with on any world. Mortal minds are just as malleable in his hands as they were when he was the god-emperor of Madara. He may not be omnipotent - but he’s plenty potent. But since he has to move more quickly now, his plans may be discovered. Will he be able to enact the early stages of his plan before the forces of Alara get the better of him, and before the attention of planeswalkers becomes too invasive?
The ancient dragon Planeswalker, Nicol Bolas, has never craved anything more than power, and his shrewdness for plotting is matched only by his aeon-spanning patience. Bolas has influenced several recent events around the Multiverse, including conspiring to have Chandra discover the dragon scroll and helping to trigger the release of the Eldrazi on Zendikar—to what end is not yet known. Bolas has appreciated the power of using Tezzeret and Sarkhan as agents in his interplanar schemes, and now seems bent on seeking further Planeswalker minions.

Coming Up Next ~
Congratulations to @misterstingyjack, @nine-effing-hells and @tmstage for being our runners-up for this week’s contest.
@misterstingyjack — Burning Fissure
The grand return of mana burn, eh? Remember the correct order: “artifact, creature or land.” Besides that, this card is both fantastic and worrisome. I have a feeling that it could definitely be printed, but it would be either beloved or behated by just about anyone who sees it. A red commander card for sure.
(For the January 27th contest “Me Time”)
@nine-effing-hells — Ko’ultu, the Tentacular Tide
I have the feeling that this one’s just a little too powerful. I like how it kinda “dies to removal,” as the annoying adage goes, but man this one’s a pain. The fact that it’s on-curve and so easily activates its ability feels like it’s too easy to slam it on the board and get an impact before your opponent can deal with anything. As an Elder Horror, it’s amazing, no doubt! Maybe it should be toned down to not be a feel-bad on board.
(For the February 3rd contest “You’re Just My Type”)
@tmstage — Golden-Tail, the Art of War
As amazing as this card is, the wording needs to follow different conventions, like that of Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer or Liege of the Tangle. Otherwise, I don’t believe the mastery counter means anything. That said, the card itself? Brilliant, beautiful, an upgrade from the original Golden-Tail, and a fantastically powerful commander and limited bomb.
(For the August 4th contest “All Grown Up”)
~
I’ve been a little exhausted, so commentary might be a touch later, but it will be tonight, I promise.

Why does Aquitect's Will's counter keep the effect of turning the land into an island work while Gwafa Hazid's counter not keep its effect while its not on the field? Both have an effect that gives a counter and another that gives an effect based on that counter being there, but Gwafa has to be on the field to check for the effect while Aquitect just gives the effect without having to check for it.

Magic the Gathering's YouTube channel shared the VorthosCast's panel from MagicCon Chicago today. They showed Oko's posse minus Annie Flash. Oko, Kellan, Vraska, Rakdos, Tinybones, and Fblthp. They confirmed Old Rutstein will be on Thunder Junction and then went on to theorize on what criminals would fit in there. They speculated on dead characters like Dack Fayden, people who haven't been seen in the game for a long time like Eron the Relentless, and seemingly confirmed Gonti, who has already been shown to helm one of the Commander Decks for OTJ. The only one I have interest in showing up is Gwafa Hazid. He had a cool card back in Alara and I'd like to see him get another.

FNM 9/24/21 - I’m Back!!
So last Friday was my first FNM back and boy did it feel good. As usual my pulls were garbage but pack one I pull this beauty:
I couldn’t believe it. This was one of the cards I wanted to get for my Yisan deck but didn’t preorder because I didn’t have the money. Even though I had a rough night just pulling that made me happy.
In between rounds my friend Robert came and we talked about commander because I brought Gwafa Hazid and he brought Esika. We talked about the Golos ban and a small tournament local players where players build commander decks with a budget of $5 per card except the commander. It sounds interesting but I don’t think I have the time or budget for one. We also talked about my signed commander which he thought was cool.
As for my rounds I had a rough night. I had a ton of options as far as what to build but one of my uncommons was Storm Skreelix so I went with Izzet. I had to improvise to get enough creatures so I added a few werewolves which came in handy a few times but it was hard with the new day/night mechanic. That was one of the new mechanics I was struggling to understand but after reading an article I figured it out. I thought each player had day/night but it turns out all players share the same day/night.
The light wasn’t a total waste. I got my first FNM promo which was Goblin Guide. My goal is to get a playset so I plan to go as often as I can when I’m not working. My next FNM is in two weeks because I work late this Friday and hopefully I’ll have some better luck with my pulls.

Want to know the real reason I sleeve all my EDH cards in the same sleeves? It’s so that I can use these in whichever decks I want to without re-sleeving them all the time.
This is why I say that my decks look a lot better than they really are. I use these really powerful cards in foil/high rarity, but then I play some C-tier commander or start setting up a 5-card combo. Or I simply use them to play a silly group-hug strategy. Gwafa-Hazid is one of my favorite decks I’ve built recently.
I really look forward to they day I’ll get to play Magic again.
(Oh, and while I’m here, I’ll use this as an excuse to advertise my Twitter! You’ll find me @128_Commodore. It’s a little exhausting, but I’m trying to be more active on there lately. Feel free to follow me for... whatever it is I do!)
