A Bevvy of Feathursday Warblers
As I walk through Downer Woods on my way to work, I am always struck by the profusion of confusing warblers I meet along the way in fall. Hopefully, one day I will be able to tell one from the other. Until then, however, we present a few chromolithographic warblers from a painting by the noted German wildlife artist Gustav Mützel, from our 2-volume set of Our Native Birds of Song and Beauty, by the late-19th-century director of the Milwaukee Public Museum Henry Nehrling, and published in Milwaukee by George Brumder from 1893-1896. They are from top to bottom:
Yellow-throated Warbler (Setophaga dominica)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata)
Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea)
Prairie Warbler (Setophaga discolor) and Palm Warbler (Setophaga palmarum)
Wilson's Warbler (Cardellina pusilla)
Mourning Warbler (Geothlypis philadelphia)
Canada Warbler (Cardellina canadensis)

Illustration of a large flying fox or Kalong by Gustav Mützel, 1894. Source: New York Public Library Digital Collections. Also known as the Malayan flying fox, Malay fox-bat and large fruit bat, its scientific name is 𝑃𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑢𝑠 𝑣𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑦𝑟𝑢. Despite that terrifying species name, though, it feeds exclusively on fruits, nectar, and flowers, like the other flying foxes of the genus Pteropus. It is very large, one of the largest bats in the world, and can have a wingspan of up to 1.5m or nearly five feet. While it is not a blood-sucking vampire as its scientific name implies, the large flying fox has found deadly infamy as a natural reservoir of the Nipah virus, an outbreak of which led to 108 deaths in Malaysia in 1998. Infected fruit bats may shed the virus onto fruit trees or animal feed in areas where pigs are raised, or pigs can become infected by eating fruits contaminated with bat saliva or urine.

And they live in family units and mate for life and the pups remain in the family unit even after new litters are born. and the family units live in underground dens together and sometimes multiple family units all live in these interconnected shared dens.

The Feathursday Blues
Summer is coming to a close and our academic year is about to begin, so we’re feeling a bit blue about leaving summer behind, but we’re also excited about the new school year. So, this week we bring you some cheery chromolithographic birds of blue to begin our September. Unfortunately, those lovely little thrushes, the Bluebirds (Genus: Sialia), are not included here, but we think these blue fellows will do. They are, from top to bottom:
Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris).
Lazuli Bunting (Passerina amoena).
Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea), male and female.
Blue Grosbeak (Passerina caerulea).
This chromolithograph is from a painting by the noted German wildlife artist Gustav Mützel, found in our 2-volume set of Our Native Birds of Song and Beauty, by the late-19th-century director of the Milwaukee Public Museum Henry Nehrling, and published in Milwaukee by George Brumder from 1893-1896.

Bambini gonfiati cnme copertoni… AFRICA, tu cosa vuoi?
