Story continued

Unlike other Trigger/Gainax works which do ignore significant detailing into their backstories, this show never tells you not to take it seriously and has the gall to code itself as a “serious” show. In contrast, fan-favorite Guren Laggan loudly tells the audience that emotional storytelling and visual spectacle are the main goals within its first episode.

DITF however, is content to bring up points and then drop them in the same breath, we have the boys and girls briefly fight with each other and we get hints of them thinking maybe our leaders are wrong, we can function by ourselves but then they forget about their argument. We have a character meet an adult who shows him that being an adult isn’t all that great in their world, and might be a parent, and it’s never brought up again. DITF even has the balls to steal plot twists from not one, but two better shows; “the mecha are monsters” and “it was the aliens” from Evangelion and Guren Laggan respectively. I’m going to stop pointing out all the utterly ridiculous and contradictory story decisions that were made in this show because I would be rambling all day. To conclude, DITF is a thematic mess of a show that wants you to take it seriously but gives you every reason to not do so. Before moving on, I will briefly go through observations of the most ludicrous things in this show's storyline; the monsters they were fighting for half the series had a huge army they could’ve killed humanity with ages ago, the creator of the Franxx was motivated by his teratophilia kink, we get a kid who’s freakishly obsessed with pregnancy and pops out one at possibly age 17, oh and Zero-Two turns into a giant spaceship woman.

Part 1: Introductions-We’re doing this in parts because tumblr says I typed way too much

Welcome guys, gals, and enpals to Queer Angel’s Tea-sis. A series where I discuss the good, the bad, and the questionable depictions of queer characters in anime and apply a queer lens of analysis. As any anime watcher will tell you, there are anime that start so-so but end well or turn out awful. However, few anime has the distinction of starting near-universally applauded (albeit I saw red flags a mile away) and then slowly take a downturn before nose-diving into a flaming hunk of garbage and exiting through the gift shop. Of course, some queer fans saw the death flags of this show’s narrative in the first three episodes of the show with its positing of a post-apocalyptic world where humans achieve immortality at the cost of reproduction and where they rely on quite literally the naïveté and uneducated horniness of teenagers to defend themselves from a subterranean existential threat. By discussing issues in production, story, and representation/messaging I hereby present the case for the designation of the title of “dumpster fire” to the show: Darling in the Franxx (DITF). (franks? Fran-X-X? who cares?)

Production

Taking us back to July of 2017, Studio Trigger announced DITF at Anime Expo 2017 revealing that it would be a co-production with A-1 pictures. A-1 is most known for creating the Black Butler adaptation and Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, but in recent years they’ve gained a reputation for making some … lackluster features like the Sword Art Online franchise and Eromanga Sensei (a production that is gross on many levels). However, during the show’s broadcast (January-July 2018), the team working on the project from A-1 changed labels to CloverWorks on April 1st of the same year. This change may or may not have led to issues toward the end of the series. Another issue with the production was a poor choice of director and head writer for the series. While Atsushi Nishigori has some serious animation chops such as being the Chief Animation Director for Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 and key animation credits to multiple A-tier anime, he had almost no writing experience before DITF. Besides, his sole directing credit for a show was…an adaption of the Idolmaster franchise. Now while I will admit to enjoying some very cheap “cute people doing cute things” musical anime, they’re typically not the most intensive story-wise and Idolmaster is in my personal opinion, one of the most brainless and junk-foody of idol anime. This is coming from someone who watched an anime that was basically a recruitment tool made by the corporate monsters behind AKB48 and still enjoys it while trying to pretend it was made in a vacuum universe where creepy entitled male fans and producers don’t exist.

While I don’t want to place blame solely on Nishigori for the faults of DITF, there were other issues that I will discuss in the later sections, his inexperience in writing and directing beyond single anime episodes certainly didn’t do the show any favors. This is especially considering this was a show heavily publicized by both major studios A-1 and Trigger, was heavily promoted in both Japanese and western anime news media, and was guaranteed to have a lot of eyes on it.

Footnote: Japanese idol culture has the expectation that female idols remain single. The penalty for being caught dating can be getting kicked out of their groups and ostracized by their fans for the crime of dating.

(If you haven't watched the show: They're both idiots who do their best to inspire people to be the best they can be and kinda have hero complexes)

Yes, exactly that! All of our translations are released as patches which need to be applied to a copy of the original game first. There are specific instructions for how to do this included in the readme for each release, (Gurren Lagann's is here), but if you're stuck, you might also find it helpful to have a quick look at our Beginner's Guide to NDS Patching which explains some of the 'lingo'!

Actually you made my day…I had a big fight with my best friend, I told him to fuck off and forget about me but this doesn’t mean I don’t feel bad about it. So your nice words come at the right time, really.

As for putting into words what I think, thank you very much. Writing is what I most love doing, and what I do best I guess. I have been a reader since I was taught to, and writing is an evolution of my passion for reading. I’m an introvert and I need a little time to process informations before I express myself, so writing helps a lot. I refer to the fact that you said you aren’t able to do it but I think that it with practice and some reading, you can definitely pull it off~

Avenger hawk I’m agree with you. People doesn’t understand that Itachi murdered his whole entire clan to save more people. I mean, if you should to try to kill 10 persons or 10.000 sure you’ll try kill 10. Anyway, it was a very difficult decision but I think Itachi have choosen the right option, on his situation, that moment.

Exactly! He did what he believed was the best option. At that moment there were no other options anyway so it’s not that he had another choice between killing the clan or witnessing Konoha kill them anyway and kill Sasuke with them. The clan would have been exterminated anyway.
