Wen Tao’s version of He Meinan had no pity like
1. Talking about the kidney transplant
Pu Yixing (as Sa Weixiao): I thought our relationship couldn’t get any closer. But we’ve now arrived at a stage where there’s you in me, and me in you.
Wen Tao, very categorically (as He Meinan) : There’s no you in me.
--
2. Once everything blows:
- He Jiong’s version actually gives Sa Beining a hug
Tumblr media
- Wen Tao’s version:
WT : That knife wound was worth it!

I got tagged by @wingletblackbird to list 5 TV shows that make me feel better and then tag 10 blogs. I know it’s been a while, but I wasn’t very active on Tumblr during the past few weeks. Huh, the majority of the shows I have in mind are actually in Chinese. Probably nothing of value here if you want to check out something new to watch
1. The Mandalorian
2. Street Food on Netflix
3. Round Table Party
(Note: interview show with host Dou Wentao, in which the guests and host sit around and talk about everything around a pot of tea or alcohol)
4. DeYun Comedy Clash:
(Note: I need to say something more about this series. This is a reality show that recently came out on Tencent featuring the DeYun Crosstalk Company. The contestants are all apprentices of the comedian Guo Degang, who competes in games and crosstalk performances. One of the few fields in modern China that still maintain apprenticeships are the traditional arts. And the master-apprentice interactions in this show is priceless. It’s very satisfying to see them doing well despite lack of theater performances during the COVID-19 lockdown.)
5. Joy of Life
(Note: weird little time travel/historic fiction/sci-fi/comedy/Wuxia show. I never thought these genre could be put together. First season is on YouTube with English subs, check it out if you’re curious)
Tag: I get the feeling everyone I know has already been tagged by someone else at this point. So whoever reads this and wants to play, I guess.

Personal Top 5 Episodes of S6 Who’s the Murderer?
I have finally managed to do a ranking of favorite eps in S6 of MXDZT. It’s the 1st season that I followed as it aired, so perhaps that influenced how I feel, but honestly I loved the entire season. Still, I definitely liked some eps more than others, so without further ado:
5. S6E6: The Mysterious Tribe
Tumblr media
I honestly had many doubts about this premise, but it turned out to be imaginative, out-of-the-box, subversive, thought-provoking and fun. Detectives are Sa Beining and Li Jin Ye (from an Exciting Offer2). Suspects: He Jiong, Wei Daxun, Jin Jing, Wei Chen and Wu Xin. Premise: A prehistoric, matriarchal tribe struck by famine gets visited by two men from a neighboring tribe. Murder ensues.
In the beginning, you’re not too sure how this thing is gonna go, and then as the story progresses, everything gets better and better, but also wilder and wilder. Half-way through the case, you think the production team’s either high or a genius, or both. 9/10.
4. S6E5: “Forgetting Concerns” Grocery Store
Tumblr media
This ep’s not as hilarious as some others, but it more than makes up for it in emotion and depth. Wei Chen is Detective, along with He Yunchen (from an Exciting Offer1). Suspects: Sa Beining, He Jiong, Da Zhangwei, Wu Xin, Zhang Xincheng. Premise: The village of “Forgetting Concerns” is known for its hot springs and a mysterious letter box, which will respond with solutions to any of your worries. The owner of a hotel in the village comes back for a visit. Murder ensues.
This ep dealt with depression and suicide (trigger warnings). It is warm, emotional, original and still has its own moments of hilarity and laughter in spite of it all. Great case and great cast. 9/10.
3. S6E9: It’s still ‘Beauty is to Blame’
Tumblr media
A super complex case made of smart plot points, great theme and a dash of crack. Detective Qi Wei, and Pu Yixing (aka Xiao Pu, aka MVPPP). Suspects: He Jiong, Sa Beining, Yang Rong, Wei Chen, Wei Daxun, and Qi Wei. Premise: A detective goes to investigate a famous clinic for plastic surgery, and finds a dissolved corpse in a tank, along with the fact that the clinic is waaaay dodgier than first expected.
Most complex case of the whole season, almost too complex, but it gets saved by how riveting it is and by the cast chemistry, which makes for endless hilarity. The ep explores society’s obsession with beauty. I give it 9.4/10, because I loved it thoroughly, but wouldn’t watch it on a day where I'm tired.
2. S6E10: NZND “Ding Niu” Concert
Tumblr media
Of course the NZND episode has to make the ranking...of course it has to. Each time NZND makes a comeback, it’s pure crack, and this is genuinely my favorite NZND of all... Wu Xin is Detective with He Yunchen. Suspects: He Jiong, Sa Beining, Bai Jingting, Zhang Xincheng, Da Zhangwei. Premise: former top boyband NZND makes a comeback concert to select their next generation boyband, and of course, murder ensues.
Some incredible plot twists, stellar jokes and a story that somehow makes perfect sense despite being concentrated crack. Shuang Bei and Bai Sa are out to kill. Amazing ep. 12/10.
Finally:
1. S6E1: Midnight Hotel, Part I
Tumblr media
I actually want to rate this ep. 20/10 because I just love it so much and I think I’ve watched it at least 3 times in full already... This is the only set of episodes in S6 filmed outside the studio and on location, and they rly outdid themselves on the set (not only aesthetically. srsly). Detectives are Sa Beining and Pu Yixing. Suspects: He Jiong, Bai Jingting, Yang Rong, Liu Haoran and Zhang Ruoyun.
Premise: A private detective goes to stay the night in a remote grand hotel with his grandson and his grandson’s disciple. In this mysterious hotel that goes on curfew and lockdown at midnight because of strange sounds in the night, murder ensues.
I cannot stress how much I love this ep. Other than the cast’s incredible chemistry and the set, the plot and its delivery are also brilliant. On-location cases like S6E1-S6E2 are great because it’s always 1 ep to solve a first murder, and then the 2nd ep to solve the mystery behind the place. S6E2 is heavy and needs multiple trigger warnings. S6E1 is lighter and a blast. It’s a cast of old players who push each others’ buttons, delving in a plot that allows them to do just that. Also, this ep will make anyone love the Sa-Pu master&disciple combo, and the ending of the ep should be immortalised. So: best case, best cast. 20/10 I love it to the moon and back.

Show Rec: Great Escape 2 Master Ver. (2020)
Tumblr media
Synopsis: If you’ve seen the variety show called “Great Escape”, you know it consists of 5 celebrities (Yang Mi, Justin Huang, Deng Lun, Da Zhangwei, Guo Qilin) who get dropped into an intricate escape room each ep and have to break out by solving puzzles, complete challenges, and piecing together the story behind the rooms (no time limit). This is the “Master” version, in which the cast is composed of (mostly) top students who “test” out the escape rooms by playing it in advance of the celebrities team.
Why watch it?
Short answer: The fun, the moments of brilliance, the suspense, the wholesomeness and the hilarity. Watch it!
Long answer:
1. THE ROOMS!
Each room is a complex and comes with a theme + a mystery that the players have to uncover together, making the process fun in itself. Some rooms even include horror elements. In the 1st ep, the players act as teachers searching for a student who mysteriously stopped coming to school. The child’s mother has died and only a nanny seems to be in the house. What happened?
2. THE CAST!!!!!!
As mentioned the “Master” ver. is only a “test”, as the cast plays the escape rooms in advance of the celebrities, so that the production team can make adjustments if needed. Accordingly, the “Master” cast is composed of widely unknown people. So why was it made into its own show and called the “Master” version?
Tumblr media
Because the cast is absolutely brilliant. The team of 6 in any ep rotates between a list of young people with (mostly) impressive academic records:
Pu Yixing: also known as “A Pu”. “Tank” of the group. All-round capable player. Pro of thinking outside the box / finding loopholes to escape. Quirky af. Chill af. Has enough guts for the whole team (When A Pu is here, never fear)
Qi Si Jun: Mom friend of the group. A new generation MC with EQ off the charts. Literally makes anyone feel comfortable within a three-mile radius.  Big Hufflepuff energy. Just the warmest and nicest.
Huo Shu: Doctorate and engineer friend of the group. Will dismantle any prop he needs to serve escape purposes. Pu Yixing finds loopholes; Huo Shu invents tools to get them out in the most unconventional ways. Also in charge of screaming.
Zhou Junwei: Psychology major (I believe). Can do as much brain work as physical work (srsly what can’t he do). 2nd mom friend, but in the ‘I was sports team captain all my school life and it shows’ way. Born in 1995 but is somehow already married.
Tang Jiuzhou: One of the didi of the group. In charge of 1000watt smiles, great mood and admiring the bros. "My brain’s not good~!” but solves all the puzzles. Optimistic sunshine boy. I want to see him grow healthily.
Shao Mingming: Precious scorpio boy. One of the only ones without an intimidating academic record. His sass can move mountains. Ultimate cheerleader. Will make you laugh and love him and also respect him. A screamer.
Guo Wentao: Graduate from Bei Da. Quieter than Pu Yixing (how is it possible?). Takes everything seriously and diligently. Will never back down in front of responsibilities.
Shi Kai: Was a contestant in Super Vocal. Now mostly in charge of physical prowess and being great because he’s Shi Kai. Has sass in impressive amounts (but less than Shao MingMing)
Shao Bangzhu and JY: Less present, no less likeable.
The teamwork between these kids is...seamless. It’s not just about chemistry, which they have in heaps: each of them’s just rly good at teamwork! No one tries to be the best or looks down on anyone, everyone cheers for and takes care of everyone. Riddles? They got brains to power through at light speed. Physical tasks? Can’t stop them:
Tumblr media
Most importantly, their dynamics are adorable and hilarious. They may not be celebrities but their sense of variety can rival celebrities 100%. In fact, they’re perhaps even more spontaneous! Add this to the wholesome team spirit and it’s pure serotonin. How to not love them?
3. THE PACING!
This is a low time-investment show because, as said, the teams just...power through. No one lingers on purpose to make the ep. more “entertaining”. Each ep is only 40mins-1hr long, and in that time, you’ve had time to cheer at the brains, laugh at their antics, and coo at the organic teamwork. You’ve also uncovered a mystery, enjoyed some puzzles and felt like you used your brain a bit. All-win!
The only downside: ...It has no subs. S2 is available in full on YT (Link to Ep.1) but so far, no subs. For the riddles and stories, the celebrity ver. is subbed, so cross-checking helps, but I do prefer the “Master” ver. by a landslide. Not having subs means many puns & references go down the drain, but it’s probably still a fun watch, if only for the situational comedy, contagious laughter, some self-explanatory stuff, and their charming personalities.
Conclusion: Great Escape “Master” Ver. is an underrated gem with a brilliant, unconventional and loveable cast, and great stories...Great Escape pretty much goes unseen here, and the “Master” ver. is even more of an undiscovered treasure. Give it a chance!

The difference in how Shi Kai treats each of the Nan Bei elder bros and vice versa ...
Pu Yixing as an elder bro to Shi Kai: lets him find his own way independently. Is the silent but chill big bro who leads by example. Will retort if challenged by the little one and will tease occasionally but is otherwise mainly minding his own business. Treats Shi Kai as an equal
Wen Tao as an elder bro to Shi Kai: teases little bro a lot but spoils him in equal amount. The motherly big bro vibe: “gege will help you do it” “gege will protect you”. Still tricks him when it comes down to it (wen tao why u always lying)
Shi Kai to Pu Yixing: Respects him but will also want to look independent in front of him. ‘Okay i might not win against you but i wont lose either!’ vibes. Wont readily ask for help. Major trust issues (pu yixing why r u so good at lying).
Shi Kai to Wen Tao: Clingy. Teases a lot. Grows from “Wen Tao doesnt know how to lie” to “I wont trust anything that Wen Tao says anymore”. STILL ends up trusting him at crucial moments anyway. Lots of flirty comments???? “Tao Tao”. CLINGY.

OKAY
Fave bits from S4E9:
Qi Sijun: “I want to wish Wen Tao happy birthday”. *turns to Wen Tao like he’s gonna gift the binoculars to him. “Happy Birthday”.  *leaves with binoculars*
WT, holding the box: “It’s too light. Can’t be a gold bar”.
QI SIJUN. TIED TO THE KITCHEN. AGAIN.
Shi Kai eating vegetables straight off the field like...please Shi Kai. How many health warnings do you need.
Cao Enqi and Qi Sijun both looking themselves up on Weibo: QSJ: “I had a new show and wanted to check the feedback”. CEQ: “I just do it out of habit”. PYX: “You can’t say that, if you say that you lose to him”
Cao Enqi admitting he looked Wen Tao up on Weibo to see his bday wishes. PYX: “He’s checking the feedback on Wen Tao.”
LYT: “After eating, you want to do sports, right?” QSJ: “You don’t understand us very well.” SK: “We don’t want to move at all. We want to lie down”.
Wen Tao wall climbing while Shi Kai is absolutely Not Calm on the ground.
The “that’s it?” moment after He Yunchen reached the top in 2+ mins.
Cao Enqi’s loudest sighs during wall climbing and everyone trying not to laugh
Kai Kai getting pretty much YANKED up the wall in the beginning.
The hug A Pu gives Xiao Qi. Xiao Qi hanging onto it for just a second before his professionalism kicks in and he starts smiling again
Cao Enqi inadvertently locking himself and Qi Sijun together, and the whole convo that ensued ksdaljksjdlksj
Shi Kai’s tiny sounds of not knowing what to respond to Wen Tao’s questioning, but not wanting to show any weakness, when they were talking on the beds (most didi to ever didi)
Sharing clues!! Sharing clues honestly!! BEFORE BETRAYING EACH OTHER. JUST LIKE THAT
“We must be thinking the same thing, huh?” “Un.”
Qi Sijun sings a well-known classic. I did not recognise the classic until they played the original right after his singing

Ok, here is M's Incomplete List Of Mango TV Recs
Who's The Murderer 大侦探 (formerly 明星大侦探): The OG. A detective, a murder victim, and five suspects. I think it was based on a Korean show? Main cast is He Jiong, Sa Beining (up until ~season 6), Bai Jingting for early seasons, Zhang Ruoyun, Wang Ou, and a bunch of rotating cast members. In season 4 they introduced the Detective's Assistant, which brings me to:
Detective Academy 名侦探学院: Started as a way to pick detective's assistants, and now is just a group game show. Everyone on here is non-celebrity, although a few are hosts/actors/singers. They've since gotten famous, but it started as a "regular person" / 素人 show. I'm obsessed with every single one of them. They're all, like, attractive in a nerdy way. Once you've seen Guo Wentao win a riddle game in 30 seconds, there's no going back.
Great Escape 密室大逃脱: To be honest I haven't seen much of this one. Similar to Who's The Murderer, except it's celebrities in an escape room instead of a murder mystery. Featuring Yang Mi, Justin Huang, and a rotating cast.
Great Escape Master Version 密室大逃脱大神版: The premise is they get people to "playtest" the escape rooms before rolling them out, so it's the same puzzles as Great Escape but a different (smarter but less famous) cast. There's a lot of overlap in this cast with Detective Academy.
Forest Evolutionism 森林进化论: Mind games. It's a specific game they play but it's way too complicated to explain here. Roughly same cast as Detective Academy/Master Version.
Werewolf 狼人杀: I'm cheating here, because this isn't a Mango TV show, and technically isn't even a single show so much as a specific subgenre. You might have a hard time following if you're not familiar with the specific set of Chinese Werewolf rules, and it's just 12 people sitting around a table so it's not as produced as the Mango TV stuff, but it's still fun to put it on and listen to. If you want to dip your toes into this particular genre of game, Detective Academy plays it a few times.
