Jika di Garut, Jawa Barat terdapat Gunung Sadahurip yang tersohor karena bentuknya yang menyerupai piramida, ternyata di Pulau Flores pun dapat dijumpai gunung lainnya yang memiliki bentuk mirip bangunan kuno negeri Mesir tersebut. Gunung tersebut bernama Gunung Inerie, terletak di Kabupaten Ngada, atau sekitar lima belas kilometer ke arah selatan dari Bajawa yang merupakan pusat kota dari Kabupaten Ngada, Nusa Tenggara Timur. Bentuk Gunung Inerie benar-benar menyerupai piramida dengan pucuknya yang runcing dengan tinggi 2.245 mdpl. Deuxième journée à Bajawa, nous nous lançons l'objectif d'atteindre le sommet du mont Inerie ! Un dénivelé de 1000m parcouru en 3h pour atteindre une altitude de 2245m. Une ascenssion vertigineuse sous un soleil de plomb qui nous amène au dessus des nuages. Tout ceci, accompagnés d'un guide local et de nos fidèles acolytes Virginie, Guillaume et Mathieu. La descente perilleuse fut à peine plus rapide dans un long chemin de pierrier, nous forçant donc à aller nous relaxer à nouveau dans les hotsprings de la veille! Le soir, nous avons retrouvé Jeremy autour d'une bonne Bintang.

Bajawa

Happy to be back on terra firma after our big Komodo NP adventure, we enjoy another night in Labuan Bajo before making the long winding journey bound for Bajawa. Only able to find a bus as far as Ruteng, we alight and are thrilled when a car soon stops and the driver says ‘Bajawa?’ Jumping in we meet Annie and Sebastian, fellow travelers who insist we join them for the afternoon trip. After an enjoyable time together on the road we go to dinner and decide to take a tour together the following day to the nearby traditional villages.

Starting bright and early we meet Arnold, our local guide for the day, who is thrilled to have 'Justin Bieber’ and 'Madonna’ onboard his bemo. On the way through the hills we get stunning glimpses of Gunung Inerie, the iconic pyramid shaped volcano that towers over Bajawa. In the nearby Bena village, celebrations are beginning for the completion of a newly completed home. In traditional dress, local men, women and children of all ages dance around the dusty square, only happy to welcome us into their celebrations. Bringing an offering to the family we are welcomed onto the bamboo porch of the new home. Tea is poured and smiles are exchanged. While our limited Bahasa gets us by, the village people largely speak with local tongue that is unknown to other regions in Flores, let alone Indonesia. Listening to our guide, we find it refreshing to learn that the Ngada clans of the region live in a matriarchal society, a way of life that is unlike other tribes in Flores. Trekking through the forest to other nearby villages we get to witness the local crafts and original house building techniques of the area, and are invited into one of the villager’s homes for lunch. Our special day with new friends concludes at Malanage hot springs, where we soothe our muscles in the steamy stream.

Early to bed after a big day, Justin sets the alarm for 2.30am with big hopes to tackle Gunung Inerie. On the back of Irwin’s scooter by 3am, the cool hill air is welcomed on the road to the foot of the volcano. Head torch in place; its time to climb. While the deep darkness consumes the surroundings, the silence and stillness creates a peace along the trail. Stopping regularly to calm our heaving chests, we lean against the rocky slope and gaze upwards into the blackness. Pushing hard, we make it to the lip of the crater just in time to witness the distant sunrise over Gunung Ebulobo. After some squashed bananas, its time to make the last push to the summit. Scrambling on hands and feet, we make our way carefully over endless loose black volcanic rock to the summit. Breaching the 2245 metre peak, woohoos are shared and we soak in the amazing 360 degree views. Soon the challenge of the descent sets in, the harsh steepness of the slope becoming much more apparent looking downhill. While the initial descent is extremely challenging, we soon come to a long section of loose red rock where Irwin leads the way in the art of skiing. Adrenaline pumping, we slide down the loose rock all the way back to the lower grassy section of the slope.

Meeting up with Donna back in town, we share stories from our adventures in and around Bajawa and spend the rest of the day relaxing in each other’s company.
