The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
2009 Newbery Medal Winner
Adapted by Charlotte, Satchel, and Lexi of Gunstream Elementary (2024)
From Frisco, TX
Judges' Remarks: This was a fast and smart adaptation of the story, which focuses on just one particular aspect of the plot (the Man Jack's attempt to "finish the job" by killing Bod, followed by Bod and Scarlett foiling him using the monstrous Sleer) and dispensing with the rest of it—the ghosts, the vampires, the ghouls, Bod going to school, etc. It started briskly, with a narrator effectively bringing us right into the story with a tight and focused explanation. The scenes in the house in which Bod gets threatened by Jack, and eventually gets the better of him, were well shot. Great performances by everyone too, all the characters played with a lot of energy and heart!

The Girl Who Drank The Moon by Kelly Barnhill
2017 Newbery Medal Winner
Adapted by Anna, Melissa, and Millie of Gunstream Elementary (2024)
From Frisco, TX
Judges' Remarks: Clever and dramatic! I liked the creative framing device of having three modern-day friends retelling the story around a fire at night outdoors, as though it's a spooky ghost story. The onscreen text and voiceover narration worked well to get the bulk of the story across, but my favorite parts were the actual live-action portrayal of the story from the point of view of the Adara, the "madwoman" imprisoned after her baby daughter was stolen away—it was an unusual and interesting choice to retell the story not from the point of view of the conventional protagonists (the stolen baby Luna, Xan, or Antain), or even to include the dragon Fyrian or swamp monster Glerk, but rather concentrating on the story from the point of view of villain Ignatia and Gherland and imprisoned Adara. The performances were appropriately dramatic and intense, and I like how the snapping of the finger coincided with the cut back to the fireside storytellers—great cinematic choice! It was also a fun way to end the story by having the storyteller say "I guess we'll never know" and everyone protests "ANNA!" Fun and entertaining!
