Artist of the Week: Major Lazer

Out of the ordinary, but into the stream of pop-culture comes what I like to call: the future of electronic, reggae, and pop music. Major Lazer is a musical project created by California based music producer, and manager of Mad Decent Records, Diplo. Members of the EDM and house influenced sound once included British DJ, record producer, and sound engineer, Switch, but is currently made up of Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire. The television series Major Lazer came along with the musical group, also as a creation of Diplo, which premiered April of this year on FXX.

The expanding artistry of the group all began in 2008 under the eyes and ears of Diplo and Switch. The group’s first record, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do, released in June of 2009. The debut project of Major Lazer exudes Jamaican dancehall style and influence featuring Jamaican artists such as Future Trouble. As told by allmusic.com the record peaked at number 169 on Billboard 200. With plenty to come, only more exposure of the fresh and unheard sound would increase the success of this innovative music group. 

Moving on without Switch, Major Lazer and Diplo released the LP, Free the Universe in 2013 The musical release featured more pop-music based artists such as Tyga and Bruno Mars, as well as peaking on Billboard 200 at number 34. Now, in 2015, the group has out their biggest LP release yet, Peace Is the Mission. Having dropped this June, the record has released one of the biggest hits of the summer, “Lean On” featuring MØ and DJ Snake. 

The track hit iTunes under Mad Decent’s label as an independent. The single has been on the Dance/Electronic chart for 26 weeks, has peaked at number 1, and still remains number 1, as revealed by billboard.com. “Spotify has named EDM act Major Lazer's "Lean On" as the global song of the summer,” as said by abcnews.go.com. As a signed artist, this is outstanding, but if anyone knows the history Joan Jett made as an independent artist, then listeners and music buffs alike can agree that Major Lazer’s success with their independent hit single, is astounding! 

To place the cherry on this colorful looking sundae, Major Lazer has set out to drop their fourth LP, Music Is the Weapon, sometime this year, so keep your ears open to this summer’s already biggest thing!
