WITH YOU ON WATTPAD
After a while Rick was back without Sophia, so he took Shane, Daryl, and Glenn to look for her again, with the hope that Dixon's tracking skills and just more people in general would help. And Charlie believed in that, she really did, because she just wanted her back like everyone else. She just couldn't imagine life without the little girl who was making up fairytales or doing origami back in the camp. But she lost her hope a little when Glenn walked out of the woods and made them move cars that were still in their way and search for supplies.
Charlie was standing next to a car with a pack, so she could take some supplies from there. She was focused on her job, a little drowned in her thoughts, but as she looked up, she noticed something near the road that made her want to cry even more. There was a billboard. It wasn't as big as those in the city but still could be visible from the road- more of a banner. There was a girl that was smiling from it. Her hair was perfect, her makeup was perfect and her smile looked as if she really wanted to smile so unnaturally wide. The same girl that was on that billboard was now looking at it, with bags under her eyes and in dirty clothes. She came back to the moment when her biggest problem was a pimple or those stupid dark circles from the lack of sleep- lack of sleep as just two fewer hours than normal.
She wanted to go back in time or meet herself from the past and just slap her in the face. Or stab her in the face. She was so stupid.
"You worry about her," said Glenn as he came to her and leaned on the car, snapping her from the train of thoughts.
Charlie looked at him and nodded her head, biting her lips. "You don't know where she is?"
"Rick told her to wait in a cover, but she probably got scared and ran somewhere," he said. "I really hope we will find her. What with that face?" Glenn furrowed his eyebrows.
"It's just...finding missing kids was hard even before this whole thing. And now it's just harder." she sighed. "She was the only good thing in Carol's life, Glenn," Charlie whispered. "I don't even want to think what will happen if..."
"Why aren't we all out there looking? Why are we moving cars?"
Charlie picked up her box and headed closer to the RV with Glenn following her closely. They heard Shane's voice. "Going back's going to be easier than trying to get through this mess."
"We're not going anywhere till my daughter gets back."
"Hey, that goes without saying."
"Rick and Daryl, they're on it, okay? Just a matter of time." Charlie said and tried to smile as reassuringly as she could.
"Can't be soon enough for me," said Andrea. "I'm still freaked out from the herd that passed us by, or whatever you'd call it."
At her words, Carol just gave a look before turning away to go back to her previous spot. Charlie looked at Andrea. "Yeah. Thank God that Sophia is calm out there, alone in the woods. Not scared at all."
Andrea looked at her with a slightly offended expression and Glenn touched her shoulder.
"Poor thing, you are," Charlie said before walking away.
"You and your drama," Andrea rolled her eyes.
"My drama?" she opened her eyes wider, and stepped closer to the other woman.
"Hey, let's all take a breath here."
Charlie turned to glare at Shane, her fists clenched at her sides. "She's not even trying to pretend she cares!" she accused, her voice trembling with emotion.
Shane reached out tentatively, his hand hovering over Charlie's shoulder, a gesture of comfort born from a desire to ease her pain. "Hey, Charlie, it's gonna be okay," he said softly, his voice gentle yet firm. "We can't fight with each other in a moment like that."
But before his fingers could make contact, Charlie jerked away, her eyes flashing with anger. "Don't touch me," she snapped, her voice sharp with resentment. Immediately, she turned around and walked away.
Everyone seemed to go their own way again, looking for whatever they could find and what would help them survive. It was mostly supplies, but what was also important was weapons. But Charlie gave up on helping the others, while all she could see was Carol, standing alone by the barriers.
"Hey," she said, and Carol jumped startled. "Hey, it's me."
The woman turned back to the woods, where Rick and Shane disappeared.
"Can I hug you?" Charlie asked.
Carol looked at her with her glassy eyes almost as if he was looking for something in her eyes, but when she saw nothing but the worry, she nodded. Charlie wrapped her arms around the woman and they were just standing there, looking at the woods. With hope.
"I can't believe she ran off like that," Carol sobbed, her voice tight with worry.
"She was scared. We all were," Charlie answered, recalling her own heartbeat while she was on top of the RV during the herd passing.
"I know, but she should've stayed with us," the mother replied, frustration lacing her words. She sighed right after her previous words. "But she's just a kid, right? She probably panicked. But what if she's hurt? What if the walkers got her?" Carol's voice cracked with fear.
"We can't think like that," Charlie said, trying to sound reassuring. "Rick and Shane will find her. We just have to trust them."
Carol nodded, but her anxiety was palpable. "I just wish we could do something. Sitting here, waiting... it feels wrong."
The girl placed a hand on her shoulder, offering what little comfort she could. "I know, but sometimes all we can do is wait. And hope."
It was noon already and the sky was turning orange when everyone gathered all the supplies around the RV. But she didn't move even for an inch, embracing Carol in a hug, helping her in this waiting.
"It's late. Gonna be dark soon," she said as she heard new footsteps approaching.
"They'll find her," Charlie answered, looking at Andrea, who just gave up and walked away.
However, her heart dropped when she saw Rick and Daryl, covered in blood and dirt, walking out of the woods. Charlie tightened her grip on Carol, predicting that whatever they had to say, wasn't good. "They're back."
Carol pushed her a little to move towards the two men when she could see her daughter and tears welled in her eyes again. "You didn't find her?"
"Her trial went cold," answered Rick. "We'll pick it up again at first light."
Carol sobbed." You can't leave my daughter out there on her own to spend the night alone in the woods."
"Out in the dark's no good." Daryl said softly."We'd just be tripping over ourselves. More people get lost."
"But she's twelve." she protested. "She can't be out there on her own. You didn't find anything?"
"I know this is hard." Rick nodded calmly. "But I'm asking you not to panic. We know she was out there."
Daryl looked at Carol and then at furrowed eyebrows on Charlie's face. "And we tracked her for a while."
"We have to make this an organized effort," Grimes announced. "Daryl knows the woods better than anybody. I've asked him to oversee this."
"Is...Is that blood?" Carol gasped as her eyes fell on Daryl's dirty pants.
"He took down a Walker." Rick said and Carol lost the strength in her legs, so she sat down on the railing."There was no sign it was ever near Sophia."
"How can you know that?" Charlie looked at Rick.
"We cut the son of a bitch open." Daryl replied and looked at Charlie."Made sure."
Carol sobbed and then opened her eyes and looked at Rick. "How could you just leave her out there to begin with? How could you just leave her?"
"Those two Walkers were on us," said Rick. "I had to draw them off. It was her best chance."
"Sounds like he didn't have a choice, Carol," Charlie said, rubbing the older woman's arms as she sat next to her.
"How was she supposed to find her way back on her own?" Carol asked. "She's just a child. She's just a child."
"It was my only option. The only choice I could make." Rick shook his head.
"I'm sure nobody doubts that," Shane said.
Carol sobbed one more time as fear about her daughter broke her heart. "My little girl got left in the woods."
She couldn't sleep that night. How could she? The horde walked by just hours ago, there was a little girl alone in the woods and the CDC blew up in the air with their friends. Also, after her little dream she had, Charlie was scared to close her eyes. It just made her realize how pointless their lives were. Wouldn't it be better to just...end it?
"You think she will come out?"
"That would be great," she answered to Daryl, who appeared suddenly behind her. "But we both know that it won't happen."
Daryl stood next to her and stuck out a hand with a small chocolate bar. "Take it."
"Are you Willy Wonka or something?"
"You haven't eaten anything," he said.
"I'm not hungry," she answered and looked at him, but he didn't take back his hand. So with a roll of her eyes, she took half of the chocolate bar.
"You can't sleep?" he asked. "You look exhausted."
"So do you," she answered.
"You not sleeping won't help Sophia."
Charlie looked at him. "Again. So do you."
"I slept. It's my watch now," he answered.
Charlie swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. She knew he was right—she needed to rest, to regain her strength for the challenges that lay ahead. But the thought of slipping back into the realm of dreams. "Well, you can go sleep some more. I'm watching," she said. "Sleep won't help me either."
Daryl scoffed and one last time looked at the woods, before turning to the girl and handing her the other half of the chocolate bar. "Whatever."
The next day, the group gathered near the RV, so they could share weapons and listen to Rick's master plan that he came up with together with Daryl."Everybody takes a weapon."
"These aren't the kind of weapons we need. What about the guns?" Andrea asked with a grimace on her face.
"We've been over that." Charlie groaned and rubbed her eyes with frustration, before looking at the woman."So many times already, Andrea."
"Rick, Daryl, and I have guns because they know how to shoot them," said Shane. "We can't have people popping off rounds every time a tree rustles."
She gave him a skeptical glance and her voice betrayed that she was annoyed. "It's not the trees I'm worried about."
With every word that was coming out of Andrea's mouth, Charlie felt more and more irritated. Maybe because she didn't like Andrea, maybe she was worried about Sophia, and maybe she was lacking good quality sleep.
"Say someone fires at the wrong moment, a herd happens to be passing by," Shane replied to her, he was beginning to lose his patience. "See, then it's game over for all of us."
"So you need to get over it," Charlie said, taking a little axe from the case that was on the car's hood.
Daryl decided to change the subject and say something important, that mattered at that time. "The idea is to take creek up, about five miles, turn around, and come back down the other side. Chances are she'll be by the creek. It's her only landmark."
"Stay quiet, stay sharp," Rick commanded. "Keep space between you, but always stay within sight of each other."
"Everybody assemble your packs," said Shane.
Rick turned to the old man, who was leaning on the entrance to his car. "Dale, keep on those repairs. We gotta get this RV ready to move."
"You sure you want to go?" Daryl asked making her turn the attention from Rick and Dale to him. "You almost didn't sleep."
"I'm okay. Every person counts, right?"
"No, if you get yourself killed," Daryl replied with a nervous undertone.
"Don't worry your pretty head with this," she said with a small smile.
Daryl's brow furrowed, but there was a flicker of amusement in his eyes. "Ain't worried," he replied gruffly, his tone betraying a hint of fondness.
Charlie couldn't help but smile at his response, her heart warming with affection. She knew that Daryl had a tough exterior, but beneath the rough exterior lay a heart of gold.
As the group traversed the dense undergrowth of the forest alongside the group, Charlie couldn't shake the tight grip she maintained on the handle of her small axe. Despite the looming shadows and the eerie silence that enveloped the woods, she found solace in the presence of her companions, particularly as she trailed closely behind Daryl and Rick. Surrounded by the camaraderie of her fellow survivors, Charlie felt a newfound sense of courage coursing through her veins, bolstering her resolve as they ventured deeper into the unknown. Especially, knowing that she was flanked by two of the group's most capable and resilient members.
Hunter made everyone stop their march as he kneeled near the bush. Everyone looked in that direction and spotted a little tent that looked abandoned, but they couldn't be so sure anymore.
"She could be in there," Shane commented.
Daryl nodded without tearing his eyes away. "There could be a whole bunch of things in there."
He headed first to examine what was inside, to check if it was really abandoned. Rick signed everyone, besides Carol, to step back. Mother of a lost child moved forward and tears came up to her eyes one more time. "Call out softly. If she's there, yours is the first voice she should hear."
Carol nodded.
"Sophia? Sweetie, are you in there?" her voice broke. "Sophia, it's mommy. Sophia, we're all here, baby. It's mommy."
When nothing happened, he pulled back the flap of the tent, and as soon as the air from inside hit his nose, he gagged and coughed. Rick and Shane were standing right behind Daryl, also covering their noses, protecting themselves from whatever was inside.
"Daryl?" Carol asked as he was gone for a longer moment. "Daryl?"
"It ain't her," he said while leaving the tent.
"What's in there?" asked Andrea.
"Some guy," Daryl replied. "Did what Jenner said. Opted out. Ain't what he called it?" he said while looking at Charlie.
Further conversation was interrupted by the sound of the bells ringing somewhere away. They didn't hesitate before running in the direction they thought the sound was coming from. Soon small church showed up from behind the trees. It was the only possible source of noise, but as they all looked closer there was one slight, tiny tiny problem.
"That can't be it," Charlie said. "It's got no steeple. No bells. Rick..."
Rick didn't listen to her but sprinted his way towards the building. That left no other choice for others, but to follow him. Even Charlie ran after him, but felt as if her lungs were shrinking and there was no air left and due to lack of sleep and food, her head felt light. She tried to catch her breath when she finally could stop, while Daryl and Rick were carefully opening the doors.
Three walkers turned their heads and were slowly on their feet, leaving the pews. But they were quickly taken down by Rick, Daryl, and Shane, so they didn't danger anyone.
"SOPHIA!" Rick yelled and his voice echoed through the empty walls.
"Yo, J.C. you taking requests?" Daryl said as he walked to the front of the church.
"I'm telling you. It's the wrong church." Shane said." Charlie's right. It's got no steeple, Rick."
He didn't even finish saying this when the bells rang again. Daryl pushed his way through everyone and Glenn followed him. Soon after that they all heard the crash and quiet voice. "A timer. It's on a timer."
After Carol informed everyone that she wanted to go back inside the church and be alone, Charlie with relief sat down on the stairs. With relief, because if anyone made her walk even fifty meters she would faint. Also, she felt overwhelmed by this whole situation. Running around the woods, looking for a little girl or whatever was left of her. That was the truth that everyone was too scared to say out loud: Sophia could be dead already. There were no signs of her.
The faith was the only thing they got.
"Y'all gonna follow the creek bed back," said Shane as he approached everyone, after talking privately with Rick. "Daryl, you're in charge. Me and Rick, we're gonna just hang back, search this area another hour or so just to be thorough."
"You're plitting us up?" Daryl asked Rick, as he said they should go back to the highway. "You sure?"
"Yeah." Rick nodded. "We'll catch up to you."
"I wanna stay too." Carl protested and tried to reason with his father. "I'm her friend."
Rick nodded but looked at his wife as if searching for a response. Then she turned to her son. "Just be careful, okay?"
"I will."
"When did you start growing up?" Lori asked and hugged her son tightly, before departure.
"Here, take this. Remember how to use it?" Rick asked Lori while handling the gun after they shared their goodbyes.
"I'm not taking your gun and leaving you unarmed." Lori declined.
"Here," said Daryl. "Got a spare, take it."
"Better give it to Charlie," said Shane. "She knows how to use it."
Andrea scoffed and rolled her eyes before following the group.
"You think you can handle it?" Rick asked her.
"Yeah, I think." she took the gun, but as she looked at it she decided to give it to the other woman. "But Lori can have it, I don't mind."
They were going back through the woods, following Daryl, who was making sure they were safe and that they were heading the right path. Charlie decided to stick next to Lori as she had the gun, so in case of emergency, she would have quick access to it. She still had her little axe in her hand, prepared to be used.
"So this is it?" Carol suddenly asked, sitting on a fallen tree. "It's the whole plan?"
"I guess the plan is to whittle us down into smaller and smaller groups." Daryl was the one to answer.
"Carrying knives and pointy sticks," added Andrea, and then looked in the direction of Lori and Charlie. "I see you two have a gun."
"Oh my God. You want it?" Charlie rolled her eyes. "Lori, give her this. She thinks she's good with it, so...let her have it. I'm sick of the looks she's giving us." Charlie said annoyed and saw how Mrs.Grimes handed the gun to the other woman. Then she looked at Andrea. "Especially you. All of you." she looked at Carol. "I can't imagine what you're going through and I would do anything to stop it. I also care about your daughter. But you have got to stop blaming Rick. It is in your face every time you look at him."
After those words, she just started walking ahead so now she was right next to Daryl.
"You all look to him and then you blame him when he's not perfect. If you think you can do this without him, go right ahead," said Lori as no one was answering to Charlie's words. "Nobody is stopping you. So go on, shoot the Walker if you see it, but don't expect anyone to come to rescue you when more come. At least know how to shoot it before you take it."
Andrea passed Lori and gave her back the gun. "We should keep moving."
