MAYNOS OCCUPATION FORCE
The death of Aun’Shar spurred the greater Tau fleet into immediate action. Seven separate invasion forces were deployed to different areas on Maynos, with what remains of the May’nar sept sending a desperate spearhead deep into enemy territory, exploring a set of coordinates gained from deep within the vault.
1. Commander Shadowsun has been woken from cryosleep to lead the vanguard, equipped with her new slave arm system designed by the May’nar septs earth caste. Though the May’nar sept has been whipped into a blind rage from the death of an ethereal, Shadowsuns arrival has caused them to hone and focus that rage into making his death count.
2. Shas’Vre Steelsong in his XV104 Riptide battlesuit. While Riptide pilots are normally essential to the Tau war machine, Steelsong was grounded for the early portion of the Maynos conflict due to his battlesuit being retrofitted with Votaan technology acquired by the late Aun’Shar. Now equipped with an experimental Shatterpoint vibration system designed to melt incoming ballistics at a molecular level, he has never been more ready to take the field, and to exact vengeance on his foes.
3. The Hakrak hunting pack makes planetfall in a Tidewall Gunrig. Pivoting from a scouting mission to a full planetary occupation, the fleet has dropped mobile fortifications in key locations. Not yet trusted to be in a proper dropship with firewarriors, the volatile Hakrak tribe strapped themselves to the gunrig before it was dropped. To the indignation of the Earth caste scientists, the Carnivores had consumed the remains of Votaan berserkers that were marked for study, which, to the surprise of the same scientists, had altered the Kroot’s skin to withstand the heat and pressures of planetfall. Thus the hunting pack’s descent had a 0% casualty rate leaving them free to continue their desecration of the dead, causing wild and random evolutions unchecked by a shaper.
4. The full contingent of Fogbreaker squadron has joined the main force. It was originally Fogbreakers Tetra pilots that activated the vault, which caused the planet to shift and spike in energy at a single point. The remaining members of the squadron now feel obligated to see their mission through to the end, swapping their usual harassment tactics for a more direct approach, joining the vanguard led by Shadowsun.
5. The shadowy Aun’Vec oversees the assault from the back line. An ethereal from the Sa’cea sept, Aun’Vec is shunned from the council due to using the remains of fire warriors in his experimental weapon development programs. Although another ethereal has taken charge of this theatre of battle from orbit, Aun’Vec insisted on his own deployment to the surface, under the pretense that someone should monitor Shadowsun for signs of cryosickness. In truth the mysterious ethereal has been poring over seismic scans of the planet, looking for the easiest route to Aun’Shar’s last known location for some yet unknown purpose. In lieu of a honor blade, Aun’Vec is armed with an Eldar Ghostsword he claimed from a Wraithblade in combat. It is rumored that it was after this battle that his experiments took a dark turn, where he would attempt to plant Tau souls into drones as a way of resurrection.
Stay tuned to see them in battle in the final chapter of The Maynos Gambit!

It occurs to me that the Tidewall Gunrig could be used to give mobile cover to a Stormsurge or other giant robot: It can offer cover to the models behind it, and unlike all the other Tidewalls this is super tall
It's uhh... That Railgun which is not very good. It's 5+ to hit with essentially no ability to boost that, but it it hits it has Devastating Wounds and Twin-linked so your wound roll is almost guaranteed. So it's very luck dependant; this is a bad trait to have
Oddly, this thing has a large shield generator on it, as from a Riptide, but no actual invulnerable save:
But, if we ignore the gun... Maybe it would be good as a shield. Additionally, being very tall is actually an asset occasionally - You can shoot from anywhere on the model, so a squad within it can remain safe behind a piece of terrain while shooting up and over it.
I dunno. It's certainly niche, but maybe it does have a purpose if you look for it's weird shape and unusual features rather than it's statline necessarily

Funny to watch people on "competitive" 40K places to lose their shit about the points changes calling T'au "nerfed to the ground when...
... literally 90% of the Codex is entirely untouched. Oh boo-hoo you can't use the versatile every-man elite unit as a spam bulk anymore. Did people actually try to read that book?
Just from memory, here's what's still going:
Longstrike and his Hammerheads - heck with Skyrays you could run 7 tanks and still be just above a 1000 points.
Stealth Suits as well as Stealth Suit-Mom (Shadowsun) and Stealth Suit-Dad (Ghostkeel) are entirely unaffected by this
Kroot. Is good. Doot. Doot. KROOT!
Firewarriors in general. Breacher Teams jumping off a Devilfish weapons hot when Kauyon activates is still a threat. Also the only ones who could in theory make proper use of the floating forifications - especially the Gunrig.
Stormsurge - who cares about points when it now costs 0 CP to include? Solo-Surge got straight-up buffed.
The Riptide still exists? With a Commander, a Stormsurge, and 3 of these you might as well play "T'au Knights"
The Crisis Suits are not supposed to be the "main infantry". They are extremly versatile in their gear so you can tailor them to a specific style or to make up for lacking specific firepower. If they were the strongest pick in the book that would make like half the datasheets redundant.
Now people have to go and plan and work around the other units perks and synergies instead of just slapping the strongest weapon-loadout on a basic unit. Strategy? In my strategy game? It's more likely than you think!

TW FOR MURDER, STRANGULATION AND GENERAL VIOLENCE FOLKS! YOU GOT THAT WARNING? GOOD.
Michael couldn't lie, the pay for contracts was enough to make him kill innocents if he really had to. But he wasn't that desperate, he always went against those that would've forced him to find someone who simply saw something they weren't supposed to. No, he left that to the other bastards in his business.
He found much joy in erasing those who earned a bullet to the dome, but this.. this made his stomach twist into knots. It churned with displeasure as he read over the paper, completely still.
ROACH ANDERSON.
Wanted dead for killing a contractor during a drunk fight, contractors brother wants him gone.
7k, 3k more if a picture of his corpse is taken and shown.
Holy shit.
Roach, only he would be the kind of idiot to murder a contractor for a business he had no fucking business knowing about, goddamnit! He'd known the guy since middle school, he didn't deserve to just die to some random bastards hands. No, Michael felt an obligation to put him down. He wasn't sure why, but it felt right.
He folded the contract up and slid it into his pocket as he grabbed onto his suit jacket, putting it on to hide his gunrigs. He began to walk out of the office building, hands stuffed into his pockets while he did. Michael had fought the guy before, and he wasn't that good of a fighter. How did he kill someone like Ryder? That tough son of a bitch managed to scare Michael, as shocking as that was.
That didn't matter now, none of it did. It was all business now, he kept repeating that in his head as he walked outside and got into his car. Starting it with a twist of his keys in the ignition, he slammed down on the gas and sped off. Roachs location was almost engraved into his mind, he didn't need any help finding the guy. He knew where he'd go, especially during a time like this. He killed a guy, he must've been fucked up and hiding out in the old warehouse him and the others used to hang out at.
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
It took less than 17 minutes to get there, Michael could spot the lights on inside. Roach probably wouldn't be alone, the guy himself wasn't hard to fight, but the guys he rolled with certainly were. King had been able to learn about them one night at the bar, watching them get into a fight and clear house with everyone inside. But he had one thing they didnt, GUNS.
Was it cheap? Sure. But he'd rather get this contract done quickly and with the quickest time possible then taking forever fighting them, so upon realizing this he took off the jacket and got out of the car. Leaving it running, knowing he'd need a quick escape for when the law reacted to gunshots.
Michael walked to the trunk and popped it open, flipping up the cover for the weaponry inside. He grabbed onto his uzi and slid the magazine out, fully loaded. He slid it back in and primed it, holding it in one hand and grabbing onto the glock in his rightside gunrig, taking it out and cocking it. He already knew Sinner there was loaded, if it was on him- he was gonna raise Hell.
Michael walked to the open entrance, the men had already gotten up and were standing just ahead of him. They were a little bigger than him, bulk and height wise. But they would fall just the same as everyone else, when they caught sight of his gun one stepped forward.
Michaels left hand snapped up and fired the handgun twice, the rounds going straight into his chest and sending him back and down to the floor. The others followed suit, hoping to get him down before he could fire again. Bad move on their part, he didn't bother aiming the uzi. He was focused on simply getting a general direction on them and opening fire, which he did. Turns out he aimed for the waist, tearing through their abdomens and legs as he turned to take down the other 2.
When they had fallen, he knew they weren't getting back up. He slid the glock back into the gunrig and took ahold of his uzi with both hands, beginning to move further into the warehouse. "ROACH!" He shouted out, looking around while he walked. "WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!"
Michaels mouth opened to continue screaming, but it shut upon seeing a much larger figure step out, the man quickly grabbed him by the throat and lifted him up off the ground, it was like he didn't even break a sweat doing it.
The grip on his throat quickly tightened and cut off the airflow, Michael struggled and kicked for a moment before he fully began thinking straight again. He pressed the barrel of his machine gun to the man's chin and squeezed down tight on the trigger, every bullet shooting straight through his mouth and going out through the top of his head. Blood splattering out and falling onto the floor and crates that had been collecting dust for nearly 27 years, his release on Michael was gone and the contract killer dropped to the floor with a grunt. He landed on one knee and pushed himself up.
Roach already didn't have a chance in hell of getting out alive, but now Michael was gonna make sure he suffered a little longer. He looked up and saw the control room, Roachs head peeking out of one of the windows and staring down. Michael gave him a grin and practically sprinted up the stairs, Roach quickly shut the window and had already locked the door. But that wasn't enough to stop him, Michael sent a fist straight through the window, cutting the shit out of his hand. But he didn't really care at the moment, although he would soon. Probably.
Michael was silent as he climbed through the now broken window, glaring down at Roach who was huddled in the corner staring up at him.. hell, was it even worth making him suffer? ...nah.
Upon thinking that, Michael attempted to fire his uzi once more, but only hearing a click. "You piece'a.." He looked to the gun and back at Roach, shrugging and dropping the firearm before stepping forward and grabbing his old friend by the neck, lifting him up and pressing him against the wall as he began to choke him with both hands. "Its nothing personal.." He mumbled, watching as Roachs arms flailed wildly and began to hit Michael, but he remained unphased. His grip only growing stronger, and Roachs life coming to a speeding halt. "Its just business."
Michael didn't know when Roach really died, but once he realized there was no pulse, no struggle, no life left in the male- he dropped the deadweight. Stepping back and reaching into his back pocket for his burner phone, opening it and snapping a photo of the corpse. He stuffed it back into his pocket and grabbed his uzi, he needed to get outta here and fast. Michael turned and climbed back out of the window, running down the stairs and going to the entrance, he continued his mad dash to his car and tossed his machine gun inside before getting in himself. He slammed the door shut and hit the gas, speeding off and kicking up the dust as he did. He could hear the siren and see the blue and red lights, but they would never see him.
He felt a little bad about the killing, but it was better that he did it than some random douchebag looking for a payday..
Plus, it was just business after all.

Great to find you on Tumblr. I have a Tumblr blog: lonestarcntrycwby. Unsure what other sites you are on. I lived/worked on my Grndprnts ranch in East TX and rode rough stock rodeo bareback broncs and bulls. After I quit riding, I coached/sponsored rough stock riders. Sometimes too, spent time helping city/suburban guys learn to "cowboy up" right to go to a bar, special Western event/concert/wedding, etc. Don't know what your bckgrnd is cowboy wise, but you are doing a grt job dressing/looking/acting the part, esp the getting shot one too. I did do some acting/fx makeup in college drama. Only known of a few guys who have portrayed different cowboys well. Don't know if you are in the U.S. or overseas, but sure would enjoy seeing more guys like yourself who can take on becoming /portraying all kinds of different cowboys, via clothing /gear changes in all kinds of country, ranch and rodeo bckgrnds. Knew a former bull rider who is now retired from his social blogs, he dressed as different cops, soldiers, leather bikers, building construction workers, cowboys, etc for over 20 yrs. His pics are still plastered all over the internet. Had a close friend who nobody gave a second thought nor noticed til he learned to Cowboy Up. Single now, just ejoying retired life. Hope to hear back from you, till then keep up the grt cwby work and have a good one buddy! JP
Yes, there is just something about the atmosphere of the old Hollywood westerns. The horses, the dusty streets, smoky saloons, cowboy boots with spurs and most importantly their gunrigs with revolvers.
Westerns have always had my admiration. I love the spirit and like to live in the universe of cowboy life as it was in western movies. You can also find me on Flickr and Insta

I just noticed the Tidewall Gunrig has 16 wounds. The other Tidewalls only have 10 wounds and 6 toughness, which... Strikes me as not great. 10 wounds is pretty easy to chew through with heavier weapons, though I suspect if you run a battlesuit heavy list it will be a lot better since the XV8s and Tidewalls all have around the same toughness. Thus, an enemy is forced to split all the fire that can actually hurt you. Gunrig has 16 wounds, which enters the point of being ”good.” It’ll take a decent amount of fire to take that down, I think. Moreover, that’s pretty field-able when staffed with XV8s. You can fit a squad of three XV8s and a drone into this thing (Or a smaller number of hazard suits.) 16 wounds is not bad for protecting that, and the ones inside can dump everything into guns. You can put in a Crisis Commander... A Borkan Commander might be killer in this. Borkan gives improved range, and a warlord trait that increases AP and inflicts mortal wounds on wound rolls of 6. A Coldstar Commander could go double Burst Cannons, Advanced Burst Canon, and a High-Output Burst Cannon for 30 shots at 22″. That’d give like, 4-5 mortal wounds... More if you survive the entire match and select Kauyon. This is just from skimming, of course. But in general, using a contraption like this to protect a gimmick might be pretty fun.

A Tidewall Gunrig is a little smaller than an Stormsurge, so it could also be fun to make a proxy for one a custom mech with an enormous gun Actually, I find it pretty interesting that the XV8s can now ride a Gunrig. I feel like that would not be super useful, though... I don’t really think a Gunrig is really giving XV8s all that much more survivability. But it’s hard to judge, I may have to see it in play. ...That does seem like a visually cool option, at least

Ta’unar gets slightly less unviable every update. Also Tidewall real? T’au sept Gunrig seems passable with the rerolls and no CP cost?
HOLD ON WHAT THE HELL? Did they just delete detachments for next year?
Right after I decided to buy into Genestealers they suddenly make Triple-Stormsurge-No-Troops-Tax a viable thing. Borkan stocks just blasted through the roof with the power of a Pulse Blastcannon.
Generally I think this is a VERY good thing not only because it makes army building a lot more intuitive - you pick your warlord and "core" of the list, and the rest is a bonus that has some hard cap - but also because it opens up a FUCKLOAD of design space for faction-specific detachments.
This will most likely just be the "baseline of army building", and then they can add faction specific stuff, which will most likely be Specialist Detachments making a comeback.
Sadly this information alone is useless for army-building when we do not know the points changes, but those will come for free AND we are off to a very good start with this I'd say. Curious to see what comes next.
