GundeadliGne (2004)
Genre: Shoot-em-up Developer: Platine Dispositif Price: £3.99
And so we finally reach the end of the Gundemonium trilogy. Well, technically we reach the second of the three games, but as the third is chronologically the first, GundeadliGne is the final game in the series from a story point of view. Following the events of the original, two soldiers (who happen to look like cute anime girls) are sent into the portal to hell that opened up near the end of the first Gundemonium in order to defeat the demons (who also all happen to look like anime girls) and destroy the portal, thus saving the world. In essence players select one of two characters: a quick one with weak attacks and a slow one with powerful attacks, and are sent off to fire quite a lot of weaponry at quite a large number of demons.
Unlike Hitogata Happa, GundeadliGne follows Gundemonium pretty much to the letter, offering a very similar style of side-scrolling heavy-duty bullet hell action. Players have a standard attack, a mana attack and a bomb, although interestingly pressing the standard attack repeatedly actually comes out with a different effect than holding it down constantly. Players can also switch the direction in which they are facing, thus allowing them to not only shoot things that are appearing in front of them, but also things that approach from behind. Mana attacks come in several different forms, which can be equipped at the start of the game. Just like in the first game, the game adjusts its difficulty to the player's abilities by shifting between complexities when the player is hit, but unlike the rather unforgiving first, the player both has a life bar (which whilst shorter than that of the original, can be refilled through the collection of life-hearts dropped when defeating certain enemies and bosses) and a game-encompassing credits system. It also adds in the option of two-player co-op, with support for both local and online hosted games.
A rather bizarre bug that I could find no way to fix somewhat broke the game for me; when playing with an Xbox 360 controller the game recognises it as input for both players, thus resulting in a situation where I was trying to control two separate bullet hell characters on the same screen using the same controls; a completely impossible feat. The only other major complaint that I could come up with (save the ludicrous difficulty and the incredibly short runtime of the game) is that the beam weapon's visual effect creates so much light that it whites out the screen to the point where you can't actually see anything that you're shooting at.
GundeadliGne is... well, it's good. Possibly better than Gundemonium (which was itself an excellent example of a genre I'm not particularly into). Certainly it's very playable in short bursts, but good god it's difficult. Whilst I did manage to complete the game on Novice, I can assure you all that it was a complete fluke, and that if asked to reproduce the feat I would probably fail miserably. I just don't have the reaction time or hand-eye co-ordination neccessary for this kind of game. Still, it's nice that I actually completed one for once, even if it was on the single easiest possible difficulty.
How long did I play? - 1.0 hours Did I finish it? - Yes, on Novice Would I play it again? - Probably not

Victory for those who are, sometimes, victorious
Well, I've accomplished all the goals I listed for GundeadliGne.
Never thought Sword Nagi would be the one to get that 1CC of Novice, since I had been failing hard at even just creditfeeding. I guess by now I've learned which attacks you just have to wait out? Also, I'm quite practiced at Alter Breaking the first twelve segments of the game as Nagi, so I got my max lives expanded to 5, and on Novice difficulty, picking up an extra life gives back all your lives. So... as long as you never continue (and thus get your max lives reset back to 3), the life pickups that midbosses, boss phases, and bosses each drop get roughly twice as good (restoring up to 4 lives, rather than up to 2). What I mean is, while I'm sort of surprised that my first clear as Sword Nagi was a 1CC, Novice mode really gives you advantages if you're 1CCing, so it isn't completely surprising.
Oh, and I've taken to calling the artifacts Sword, Jewel, and Mirror, rather than Sword, Orb, and Disk. It just makes more sense that way. Those still aren't the real names, though. They're Murakumo, Masakado, and Ikaruga, respectively. I'm not sure how this is relevant in the slightest.
Also, 1CC Standard difficulty as Elixirel wasn't really a big deal. Did it in one try on the same evening I managed the 3CC as Mirror Nagi. This is because Nagi is ridiculous to play as and Elixirel is seriously overpowered.
Next on the list is drowning Chante, I suppose (maybe Wednesday? I already wrote the narration and have looked over it a few times... though I still lack confidence in its quality, and also feel overshadowed by the taking out of the Denizen... er... that probably isn't the right word, but I'll pretend you get it anyway). Oh, and in terms of video games, next is beating Gundemonium Recollection as all 64 Earl types. I still can't even consistently 1CC Novice, and I'm 10 or so in. I do hope to move up in difficulty before I get through all the types, though.
Hrm... Gundemonium Recollection doesn't have a melee character to complain about. I mean, sure, there's the spell "Hell Spike" which is melee and the "Photon" main weapon deals more DPS at close range, but you're still always carrying a ranged main weapon. Oh well. It probably already stopped being amusing to everyone except me.
