*The following post contains spoilers fro Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans Urdr Hunt, episodes 1-22*
As a follow up to my previous post about Urdr Hunt:
Wistario Afam.
Wistario just doesn’t really….. grab me, as a protagonist. And I’m not sure why, but I do want to extrapolate a little. I like that Wistario has a solid, defined Goal, which is to win the Urdr Hunt, and use the prize money to buy and do up the Radonitsa colony.
Gjallarhorn making a play for Katya upends this - not completely mind, but it causes Wistario to pivot to protecting Katya at the expense of the Urdr hunt. This makes sense, he’s able to recover data from the Urdr hunt without directly collecting it himself since he knows and is friends with roughly 3/5 of the other participants (4/5 if we count the Zan brothers). This is a good decision, but it does still cause him some grief, since he knows he doesn’t have the resources to take on Gjallarhorn.
Then he meets Londo Bron, and makes a steadfast declaration of protection/marriage proposal to Katya. This is where he sorta loses me.
It’s not a bad choice, and I understand it’s borne out of his desire for family, which has been slowly building in the background as the series goes on. Thing is….. him and Katya haven’t really interacted other than collaborating on the Urdr Hunt. Honestly, the only person he’s interacted with enough that I would genuinely believe a proposal would be Range. So when I first heard it, I genuinely thought he was bluffing Londo, but then as things progress he’s serious about it, and I just can’t really fathom why, because they just haven’t interacted in any capacity that I feel would lead to romance. What I’m getting at is that Wistario’s wish to buy Radonitsa and do it up to improve the lives of people on Venus feels like the thing that keeps him “tethered”, I suppose. So I kinda lose him when that gets taken away. I don’t disagree or fail to understand his actions, it’s just that it’s such a big part of his personality that I struggle to parse him without it.
Part of this could be a bigger issue of certain characters not being explored enough - I like Range, Katya and Denmer, they’re all either explored enough for me to like them and understand their actions or have enough going on that I can fill in the blanks myself. But Wistario and Korunaru kind of aren’t, and this wouldn’t be an issue if they weren’t ostensibly the main characters. I like Korunaru, but she suffers because I believe her character could have been combined with Katya without losing much in the process, and I seem to recall the marketing pushing her as important.
I’d like to stress that if there’s some sort of Bio section in-game, or some extra side conversations that flesh them out then that sounds great, but I don’t have those in front of me so I can’t really account for them. Wistario’s just fairly obvious since he’s the protagonist, so he kind of needs to have a defined (though not necessarily strong) character.
However, I do rather like his design. It’s got a youth and energy to it that I think goes well with his desire to re-invigorate Venus’ economy, and his clothing’s functional without looking drab, so it’s believable that this is something he lives and works in. His childishness (at least comparatively. Honestly it comes and goes) and friendliness also illustrate that he’s a positive spirit and force for change in a negative environment (read: basically all of Post Disaster).

Today we are referencing McGillis Fareed: Twink Edition.
I'm always impressed by how this side-story de-aged him. The circumstances are perhaps unusual (this is his first meeting with Almiria, so hardly a typical day), but he still seems a lot less impressive than he will be when the series begins and considerably more . . . mild? The first shot where he appears, which is admittedly just a static screen, he's virtually blank, a very different mask than the one he'll adopt when he gains a ranking position.
(This is *delightful* to me given what I did with his 'younger brother' in my fanfic.)
In any case, it's a great bit of retro-fitting, positioning this version of McGillis four years prior to the first episode.
I would be remiss not to mention that I am also referencing Cyclase Meyer: Teen Archaeology Assistant as well.
This demonstrates a less interesting transformation, since the gap between the younger and the adult versions is mostly just a case of 'and then the fictionalised psychopathy kicked in'.
#reference#gundam iron blooded orphans#gundam ibo#iron blooded orphans G#urdr hunt#mcgillis fareed#cyclase meyer#now I just need to work out how to *describe* the younger McGillis from Cyclase's point of view#probably going to be leaning on 'mild' a lot here#is Cyclase the type to notice that Mackie is also very pretty?#let's find out!#for timing purposes I am assuming Cyclase's backstory predates 'Almiria in Love' somewhat#but I shall definitely be leaving it vague as to by how much

How I think IBO characters would watch horror movies
If this has been done before I can't find any. Just think of it as my take
If anyone isn't on here it means idk how they would react. I'm sorry Turbines fans
Tekkadan:
Mikazuki - doesn't react to much of anything that happens. Will occasionally say "oh" when there's a jumpscare. Spends the whole time eating the snacks with the other hand holding Atra's
Orga - has a stoic face all the way through. If you ask if he's pretending he'll tell you no
Atra - refuses to watch them, says she doesn't understand the appeal. But since everyone is watching she'll join and sit between Mika and Kudelia. Covers her eyes for the most part
Kudelia - claims it's a good test of bravery. Doesn't scream but grips Atra's arm really tight
Shino - squeezes his eyes shut during suspenseful scenes. Yells way louder than he's scared when there's jumpscares
Eugene - says he won't be scared by a stupid movie. Got pranked by Shino afterwards and screamed really loud
Gjallarhorn:
McGillis - doesn't react to any scary parts. Seems to be more invested in the plot and characters than the horror. Pats Gaelio on the back to comfort him while still looking at the TV
Gaelio - really can't do gore or any yucky scenes, or he starts to feel sick (Carta scolds him for being weak) It's kind of funny to see a man over 2 meters get scared
Carta - acts like she isn't scared, but she totally is. Weak to jumpscares. Yells at Gaelio to release stress. Maybe she wanted to get closer to McGillis, but it didn't work
Almiria - is not allowed to watch horror movies. G-rated only!
Ein - acts unaffected by the blood and guts, but he gets jumpscared. Starts fidgeting during high-tension scenes
Isurugi - his frown lines get deeper when the gore gets really bad. Other than that, not much of a reaction
Julieta - makes faces when there's gore, yelps when there's jumpscares. Looks at Iok disdainfully. Eats all the snacks
Iok - tries and fails to hide how scared he is. Got pranked by Julieta after
Rustal - he's not really paying attention, is he?
Yamazin - alarmingly into the blood and guts. Bonus if it gets sciencey. Teases Gaelio and Julieta
As a bonus, select Urdr Hunt characters:
Wistario - says it'll be fun. Puts his hands over his eyes when there's gore, but he doesn't seem too scared. Eats snacks
Demner - doesn't understand the appeal, but since Wistario, Katya and Korunaru want to see it, he plays it for them. Also supplies the snacks
Katya - can't watch gory ones. Other than that, she's having fun
Korunaru - puts her hand over her mouth during especially bad scenes. If you ask her about the movie she'll say "it was nice" and nothing else
Range - shouts when there's scary parts. Him yelling is worse than the actual movie
Londo Bron - spends the duration of the movie imagining Carta getting scared and relying on him. It does not happen
Cyclase Mayer - says he's not interested, watches anyway. But he doesn't sit down and if you ask he'll reply he's not watching it
Tagging - yells and shakes Batch by the shoulders, but she might not be as scared as she acts. Anyway, she seems to be having fun
Berose - she'll watch it, but she truly does not care
aaand that's it folks! :D

So I guess I’ll make this quick post cause I’m bored in the trailer for the new Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS G app I noticed in the Urdu hunt Section of the trailer they were brief shots of both Naze and Shino Which gives me the impression we might see them in the Urdr hunt although I’m not 100% behind the predominant theory that Naze is this mysterious N character who organized the hunt but I still think he might appear since he has connections to Tamami Rakou that being said what we saw might just be a side story. On a different note In the brief shots we get of Shino and his mobile suit at first I thought it was a Hakukou but when I took a closer look I realized that I guess they had repaired his EB-06/tc2 Ryusei-Go and replace it’s smashed head with that of a Hakuou or another Teiwaz Mobile suit and the busted arm with one from the STH-05R Rouei as well as giving it the Roueis back Thrusters however I couldn’t quite make out the cockpit make.

Ah, cool, the Gundam Info version was region locked.
Interesting, very interesting - looks like new animation at the start and end of the trailer, and the game cut-scenes for the middle. I'm curious to see which bits of the gameplay/static sections they animate for this. And I assume the lady shown at the very end is probably the mysterious 'N' or closely linked to him, so looks like we'll get a resolution to the plot after all!
Iron Blooded Orphans: Urdr Hunt film announcement, yippee!!!

hi, just wondering where are you watching urdr hunt?
There’s a YouTuber, Trafalgar Log, who’s translated and uploaded all the game cutscenes (and a little gameplay).
The entire series thus far can be watched on their channel, and it also includes translations of the sidestories from the game.

I have acquired the kit for Cyclase's custom Schwalbe Graze (for Blender modelling purposes, you understand) and am delighted to discover the English translation of the manual blurb calls it a 'whimsical' mobile suit.
I realise they mean 'idiosyncratic' but still find it highly amusing to see anything connected to Cyclase 'psychopathic eyebrows and the personality to match' Mayer described as 'whimsical'.
#gundam ibo#g tekketsu#urdr hunt#Cyclase Mayer#the manual also states he is 'surprisingly knowledgeable' about the Calamity War#which certainly paid off in the game#(this kit was released in advance I believe)

GUNDAM IBO: Where is the next part?
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans is a mecha anime series set on a futuristic, terraformed Mars, taking place 300 years after the devastating Calamity War. The story follows a group of child soldiers from the organization Tekkadan, led by Orga Itsuka, who seek to carve out their own destiny amidst the chaos of war and exploitation. The narrative begins when Kudelia Aina Bernstein, a Martian noble, hires the private security company Chryse Guard Security (CGS) to escort her to Earth. Her goal is to negotiate independence for Mars from Earth’s oppressive rule. However, during their mission, CGS is attacked by Gjallarhorn, a powerful military organization representing Earth’s interests. In a moment of desperation, Orga leads a coup against CGS's adult leaders who abandon the child soldiers in battle. Mikazuki Augus, Orga's closest ally, pilots an ancient mobile suit known as the Gundam Barbatos, which he uses to fend off Gjallarhorn's assault. This pivotal moment marks Tekkadan's transformation from mere survivors into active players in the ongoing conflict for Martian independence. As they navigate through political intrigue and warfare, Tekkadan faces numerous challenges, including betrayals and the harsh realities of their violent existence. Iron-Blooded Orphans explores heavy themes such as child soldiers, exploitation, and the quest for identity and freedom. The series is noted for its emotional depth and tragic storytelling, often drawing parallels to real-world issues like poverty and corruption. The characters endure significant losses, leading to a sense of desperation that drives them forward despite overwhelming odds. The show is characterized by its darker tone compared to other entries in the Gundam franchise, with many characters facing brutal fates as they strive for their goals. The bond between Mikazuki and his Gundam evolves into a symbol of hope and resistance, even as the narrative unfolds towards a bittersweet conclusion. The last chapter is just heartbreaking; you feel empty not just because this is the end of the story but because the final fate of Tekkadan feels so real. The antagonists actually did good; the world became a better place, leaving you wondering if Tekkadan was actually in the right. One would imagine that if you created such a great anime series, you would announce the next story in the same universe. Indeed, if fans wanted more of this style of storytelling in the same universe, there is the manga Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Gekko. This is a spin-off manga from the main series that has four volumes... but it got canceled. Yes, you read that right—after discovering that there is another story from the same universe as Tekkadan, you find out it is canceled and unfinished. Then you return to mourning the main series only to discover a trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam: IBO Urdr Hunt. Suspecting another failure, you investigate and find out it is... a mobile game? Yes, a mobile game! You might normally think it’s just a trash game with some animations and no real story, right? WRONG! It is actually quite the opposite. This game features an engaging narrative format with an anime series that casually incorporates interactive gameplay (which can be underwhelming). Nonetheless, the story is awesome and filled with mystery and depth. The only downside is that the game doesn't have a Japanese translation; luckily, there is full gameplay on YouTube that has been translated. So go check it out! This revision enhances readability by breaking up long sentences and clarifying some points while maintaining your original intent and content. Benjamin Troncoso

Number's and capacity in IBO
It's always interested me That you'll have times in the Gundam franchise when we will get stats about mobile suits and ships like how many were produced and deplored or how big a mobile suit compliment a ship can handle for people who like having exact numbers however, at least I find that some of this information is kind of lacking in IBO of course part of that is down to my inability to read or translate Japanese so the information I seek could be out there I just can't read it. Like for other Gundam shows, there are art books for the IBO anime that give sketch art and layouts of buildings and vehicles which some of I think have been translated onto the wiki pages the rest I can have fun extrapolating about based on what I know.
Mobile suits
I think it’s been established that mobile suits in IBO while usable are expensive to maintain partly for development and maintenance costs then compound that with the fact that Gjallarhorn is the only one allowed to produce Ahab reactors to power them. I went back and noticed that other than organizations with a lot of capital like Gjallarhorn, Teiwaz, or the Zan clan you can't have them in big numbers, and even for those big groups resources can be limited, a few examples I could think of are the noble families of Gjallarhorn just keeping their family Gundam in the vault 'cause they don't have the money to maintain and use it, it ‘s also been said that the EB-05s Schwalbe Graze had a high operational and development cost and Teiwaz was only able to produce 44 STH-05 Hyakuren even with the cost saving of just salvaging reactors from the debris field, granted both the Schwalbe Graze and Hyakuren are well-performing machines. In the case of both organizations it seems like they were able to also mass produce more dumbed-down versions of their more sophisticated suits like the STH-16 Shiden or the EB-06 Graze or the really dumb-down AEB-06L Hloekk Graze for everyone else seems like the only other option was to salvage leftover suits from the calamity war mostly Rodi and Hexa frames while maybe easier to find seem to still require upkeep.
Ships
In terms of ships it doesn't seem like we get a lot of exacts they give the number of mobile suit catapults but other than that all I could find in terms of mobile suit capacity was the skipjack-class being able to carry 10 suits but that's when the sketch and designs come in they give more detail, looks at the hangers for Halfbeak-class ships I can't really say for sure looking at the sketches and going back and looking at the show I'd say maybe six that get hung on those clamps you see there.
there is also the half beak-class owned by Jasley Donomikols which opposed to the gjallarhorn models having the hanger at the bottom of the ship it appears that the front of the ship has been along geared to accommodate all the mobile suits but really we only get a look at the launch Bay so I don't really know, however Jasley did say that they outnumbered Tekkadan so I'm going to guess high teens low twenties.
when it comes to armored assault ships like the TIR-0009 Hammerhead or the NOA-0093 Isaribi The number of suits seems subjective in the sketch below you can see three mobile suits lined up maybe you can fit a fourth in there.
The thing is I also remembered something and went back to watch the sixth episode of the urdr hunt game and when Wistario and his crew pick up the Ahab waves of the Rakou Pirate ship they detect one armored assault ship and six mobile suits so my guess is 4 to 6.
Trying to guess the number of mobile suits on the NOA-0132 Hotarubi was a little trickier 'cause even with being a Teiwaz subsidiary I was under the impression that Tekkadan wasn't that rich to afford a whole bunch of suits at once don't think they had a full stock before they broke with Teiwaz so I'm just guessing on the number of hangers and mobile suit bays which based on the concept art there are eight hangers on each side with at least six mobile suit bays in each that make for a total of forty-eight possible mobile suits.
I know at the end of the day this is just nitpicking but like I said for people who like exact numbers like me to get a better scale of the world for more detailed storytelling information like this is appreciated.

Sadly (or at least, inconveniently, from an English-language perspective; I'm not sure the gameplay was much to write home about) the Iron-Blooded Orphans G app and the Urdr Hunt campaign within were never released world-wide, and the whole thing was shut down at the start of the year (presumably because it didn't make a lot of money, what with coming out two years late).
You can find a lot of footage from Japanese players on Youtube and @trafalgarlog produced English subtitles for all the cutscenes and the side-stories, which can be found here and here.
There is going to be some form of animated production taking the cutscenes from Urdr Hunt and completing them into a full story, but no news yet on when that will be released, or if it'll get an English language release of some sort (although that would obviously be great).
There is a website for it providing character bios and mecha details.
How does one even play Urdr-Hunt?
