Day 2: Rainy Days
Well, I messed around too much and wound up posting this late, gg. Spent most of the day celebrating a special girl’s birthday, as shown in this. Ill be a bit more punctual on this stuff, I swear. Anyway, hopefully everyone wished their local Maki a happy birthday. Yes, my description of Maki’s gift is a very simplified description of a real rifle that costs roughly $2,850 and judging by reviews is pretty damn good. Didn’t want to bore anyone reading this with too many details or seem like a commercial on it. Most of my writing for this will be more amernami content, but I had to give this day to my little Red.
"Happy birthday to you~"
Maki's face was red as Kirumi set the cake down on the table in front of her, the rest of her new family standing at the other end. Miles had a camera ready, Chiaki leaning against him while holding baby Marigold. For now they wanted to keep it more of a small family gathering, but Kaito had showed up early to help with serving Maki her cake. The rainy weather that day prevented them from doing much, but some of Maki's friends had planned on arriving later to pick her up for a fun night out. At least the small family could have some time together first.
"Make a wish, dear." Miles spoke from behind the camera, ready to snap the moment his adopted daughter celebrated her first birthday in their home. She sat there stone-faced with embarrassment before blowing out the candles. Everyone clapped for her, almost drowning out the rain pattering against the window.
"Ah! I almost forgot! Don't say what you wish is or it won't come true, I think." Chiaki spoke up, cradling the baby gently. Miles chuckled a bit and Kaito slapped Maki on the back.
"Great job, Maki Roll!"
"All I did was blow out the candles..Anyway, thank you everyone." Maki spoke softly, still not used to such a profound occasion. "I've never had a birthday party like this."
Kirumi had cut the cake so efficiently while Maki was speaking no one had even noticed, already placing a plate in front of her. "Here you are, miss. If you need anything else, let me know."
Maki gave Kirumi a bit of a cold look, but one of good intentions. "You're going to have one too, right? You're not just a servant here."
"If that's what you would like, I'd be happy to fulfill that request."
"Oh! Could you cut a tiny piece for Mary? I want to get a picture of my little princesses having cake together!" Miles grinned, taking Chiaki's hand to move around the table to Maki. "Think of when she's grown up and gets to see this photo!"
Maki smiled very subtly, reaching out to take her sister. "Come here, you."
"Awww, you really are good with kids, Maki Roll.." Kaito chuckled to himself, making Maki shoot him a cold look.
"Do you want to die?"
The proud father had taken plenty of photos, glancing through them on his phone as he uploaded them to as many online albums as possible so they'd never get lost. He sat alone on the couch in the living room, Chiaki had already put Marigold to bed and found herself turning in a bit earlier than usual. Miles was a bit concerned, the rain hadn't let up at all and it was already nearing eleven o'clock. Just as he considered texting Maki, he could hear her unlocking the front door.
"Hey Red. Have a good time with your friends?"
"Yeah, it was fine. Most of them asked me to tell you 'hi'. I'm not sure why, they all have ways to get a hold of you." She scoffed a bit, shaking off an umbrella as she entered the house.
"By the way, I have another gift for you. I was keeping it in the garage." Miles stood up and waved at her to follow, Maki raised an eyebrow before following him. Hiding in plain sight by the car was a long box, and Maki could immediately tell what it was. He set the box on the roof of his car and motioned for her to open it. "Mom would flip if she saw this, so we'll just introduce it to her casually at some point. Pretend you always had it. Or that it’s mine, that might work.."
"You're ridiculous." She opened the box and it was exactly as she expected: a rifle. She took it out carefully, inspecting it. A custom-made bolt-action rifle, assembled from some of the finest parts on the market. It came with a suppressor, five and ten-round magazines. Also included in the box, obviously stuck in there by the old man, was a small metal trinket of her symbol: a red butterfly. "Wow..This.."
"One of a kind. Like someone I know. I pulled some strings, thought you needed something new in your collection. I've seen similar rifles to this one make sub-MOA groups at over 550 yards. Perfect for someone like you who values efficiency and precision. They even included the target they shot at when they tested it, pretty neat huh? I think you could easily make some magic happen with a rifle like this. I was going to let you figure out what optic you want on it later. We can sneak it out to the range whenever you're ready, just have to distract mom a bit, so.." He cut himself short noticing droplets of water had snuck their way in the garage. His daughter's tears.
"Thank you, old man.."
He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, giving her a hug. "I know this is difficult for you, adjusting to living outside of everything you went through. I know this house is kind of ridiculous. You live with a married couple not that much older than you pretending to be your parents with a baby and a pet tiger. But you're family now. You'll always have us, and every year we'll make sure there's a place at the table for you to have a cake and open presents. I know you want to help me in fighting crime, but more importantly I want you to make your own decisions and just live your life. I want to give you that chance."
They were both speechless, father and daughter in their own way, as they stepped back into their home. The rain continued, but it wasn't dreary.

Day 1: Tangled
Going for @tittiesontrees February prompts this month for fun. Had some trouble with this one, the original plot was going to be more action-oriented but reeled myself in for the lovey couple moment. That father/daughter salt though.
Another day waking up in the early afternoon. Another long night out on patrol, sneaking back in to cuddle with Mrs. America and reassure her everything was fine. Miles was groggy from sleeping only six hours, but at least he could function. The house was peaceful, for now. The baby was still asleep, the tiger was fed, Maki was at school. His phone buzzed on the nightstand indicating a text message of some kind. As he reached over for his phone, he felt a sudden jerk among the covers. He was trapped.
Looking over at Chiaki, he realized the issue. They had both tossed and turned in their sleep that night and were now tangled up among the blankets. She was lying down hard at the edge of the sheets and keeping them pinned.
"Sweetie. Darling. Love of my life." He whispered and turned to face his lovely wife. Chiaki was sleeping like a baby as usual. Although it was easy enough to wake her nodding off during the day, she took her actual bedtime very seriously. Sighing to himself, he took a wide swing and just barely managed to grab his phone. Luckily it was just a text from Maki.
"How was patrol? I know you made it home at least." "Boring. I beat up a few guys breaking into an ATM. Hey, I'm stuck with mom in bed, what should I do?" "..." "NOT LIKE THAT. THE BLANKETS." "How should I know? Maybe this is what you get for not letting me come along." "I told you, you're not skipping school to fight crime with me. Not yet." "What kind of answer is 'not yet'?" "I'm fine with you skipping college maybe but you have to graduate high school first." "Whatever. You know how I feel. You have too much at stake to keep doing this alone." "We'll talk about this later. Stay. In. School."
He sighed louder. Why did she have to keep bringing that up? The sudden gentle touch of a soft hand pressed on his chest made him jump a bit, but was soothed by the familiar sound a long yawn as Chiaki wrapped her arm around him.
"Good morning..Did we sleep in today?"
"Just a little. I think we're allowed to for now, it's going to be a busy month for us."
She leaned against him and breathed deeply. "Don't remind me. At least we have Maki's party ready."
"Yeah. Also..I promise to take it easy. I don't want you worrying about me."
She squeezed him a bit tighter and nuzzled into his neck. "Good..Love you."
"Love you too, kitten. Uh, by the way, can you move a bit? We're tangled here."
