OK, below is the context for my earlier Quote of the Day.  The TL/DR version is: I got to observe a really awesome training class.

CW/TW: Discussion of guns, simulated shooting at people.

So over the weekend, I attended (though didn’t participate in) a class on handguns for people who are already moderately experienced with them. It was SO COOL. They didn’t use real guns for the training; they used practice ones that looked like Glock 19’s. And not only do they look like Glocks, they work exactly like them too, except they fire tiny paintballs. (Well, not exactly paintballs, but pretty close.) 

The class started with quite a lot of safety instruction, and then the instructor said he was going to come around and shoot each student once with a practice gun, so everyone would know how it felt to get hit, and to “get the fear over with.” Spoiler: it stings and leaves a moderate-to-severe welt.

So you have this class of guys plus one kickass girl (not me) standing behind the classroom tables, waiting for their turn to get shot. 

The instructor (J) wanted it to be at least a little surprising. So, picture a retired Marine (awesome guy BTW) standing on one side of a classroom table, pointing a blue training Glock at a student’s chest.  He’s not at full extension, just holding it close to his own chest with both hands, totally relaxed, and having a friendly conversation.

J: Tell me a little about yourself.

A: I, uh, well...I...

J: How old are you?

A: Thirty-seven.

J: What do you do?

A: I, um, I work at Third National B—

BLAM.  A winces, laughs, and sits down.

J: *steps to the next person*  Hi.

B: Uh...hi?

J: So are you married?

B: Yes.

J. Kids?

B: Uh...kids?  Yes.  I mean kid.  One.

BLAM.

So, lesson learned, basic conversation is hard when you’re expecting to get shot with a paintball any second. We had one guy in the class who grew up in Russia, though he’s lived in the US for years; he said he almost forgot how to speak English, lol. Filing for future whump reference...

There was a distant explosion and Whumpee sat up in the tent. He winces when the movement stretches the muscles in his back, but otherwise doesn't do anything else. He looks through the mesh window and watches Henchmam run out of her tent and to the light switch.

She calls out to Villain, but he doesn't respond.

Whumple chuckles when she mouths something he could only guess at. 

The lights clunk off and Whumpee  has to fight to keep his breathing quiet. Hurried footsteps approach and Whumpee strains to see what's happening. Lights come from the tunnel and Whumpee almost laughs.

A gun fires and Whumpee prays Hero moved closer than he’d expected because it looked like it had come from the light switch.

The lights chunk back on and Whumpee sees Hero. He's a little bloodied and bruised, but seems unharmed otherwise.

Henchman writhes on the ground and Whumpee can't help but feel a pang of sympathy for her. Villain rushes out of his tent but before he can even get a word in, Hero shoots him in the leg. He falls to the ground and cries out. Hero runs to Whumpee and pulls Whumpee out of it.

He holds Whumpee close and Whumpee can feel him shaking Whumpee pulls back and cups Hero's face. "Hey."

Hero laughs, "Hey. You're safe now. Let's get out of here. Sidekick can wait till the police show up.”

"Yeah,” Whumple nods. "Yeah, Let's go."
