Beach houses in Alabama are raised to protect them from flooding and other natural disasters. This method of construction is called stilt construction, and it's been used for centuries. 

* Flood protection: Raising a house above the base flood elevation (BFE) reduces the risk of floodwater entering the home. 

* Protection from storms: Hurricanes and other storms can cause high waters and storm surge along the Gulf Coast. 

* Protection from shifting soil: Shifting sand and soil can damage buildings, especially in unstable ground like beaches. 

* Protection from pests: The space under a raised house can be used for storage or work, and it can also keep out vermin.
