Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve Ch R2: Gauthier Onclin [Q] def. Ernests Gulbis [LL] 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3 mid-match stats (3rd set)
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Although the double-fault in the first set could be costly for the next set's rhythm, Onclin's composure helped him navigated the other two sets. The ability to figure out the return and staying stable were something else, in which the stats (until that point) resonated with.
Gulbis might have scored 13 aces with winning 83% of his points from his first serves. However, the second serves looked non-existent, as Onclin won 25% more points from his second serves. Onclin might have gone after Gulbis' second serves with that return, and by adding more pressure, subtly contributed to Gulbis' 4 double faults.
The return variety in Onclin, even coming up with a decent, accurate response to Gulbis' underarm serve, did him wonders in this match. There were occasions where Gulbis had limited options to response, and even when trying to utilize the angles for winners. On the other hand, several successful volleys were noticed from Onclin to close a rally, adding the net game to the mix when it fit. As a result, he was able to convert two-thirds of his break points.
Onclin will then face Kaichi Uchida, who earlier defeated Jozef Kovalik 7-6, 6-1. Looking at the possible path, this would look doable for Onclin to make a run as a qualifier in his home soil, but it is worth following what is going to happen. The potential is right there, just hone it and keep moving forward.

His wife was expecting, her belly swollen with child as she moved around their home, her flowing khaftan accentuating her curves as she fluttered around, her gentle hands pouring love into their home with every touch. Her hands tended to their array of little plants on their kitchen windowsill, her soft voice softly mumbling to the plants, talking to each one as if they were her very own children.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist, caressing her bump as she slowly melted into her husband, relaxing against his chest as he gently swayed, watching her carefully tend to the plants, her hands gently caressing the leaves as she assessed their condition.
“Good morning, sweet wife,” he mumbled huskily against her neck.
“Husband,” she said, grinning, head tilting back against his shoulder as she inhaled his comforting scent. He’d been away for more than a fortnight, only appearing at their home in the early hours of the morning, slowly slipping into bed beside her. She missed him desperately, yet his loyalty to the Medjai and the world often pulled him away from her.
She sighed, turning around and smiling softly at her husband, placing gentle kisses against his jaw.
“Missed you,” she mumbled slowly as she nuzzled her nose under his jaw, breathing softly.
“Me too, my Qamari,” he mumbled gruffly as they slowly swayed in the balmy desert heat.
“You know what I missed the most?” He asked softly. She gazed at him; a questioning look in her eye as she prompted him to continue.
“I missed your eyes,” he said, gently kissing her lids.
“Your sweet flushed cheeks,” he said, making her laugh and blush a vibrant pink, his favorite shade. He thought it was more ethereal than the heady mix of reds in a sunset. Smiling, he placed a kiss against her cheeks, savoring the feel of soft skin against his lips.
“Wanna know what I missed, Habibi?” she asked coyly, smiling up at him, a twinkle of mischief in her eye as her husband arched his brow at her. “Your lips on mine,” she said, yanking his collar as she pulled him down, bringing his lips closer to hers in a barely-there kiss before pouting, playfully saying, “But I suppose you didn’t miss that, hmm?”
He grinned at her before pulling her into a searing kiss, lips melding together after many lonely moons passed. She sighed into the kiss, pressing herself against her husband, hoping to get closer than her bump would allow. It felt comforting, it felt like coming home.
He was a thirsty man in the scorching sand who had finally found an oasis. Relief bled through his being as he relaxed into his wife, feeling her soft body against his as he rested his arms on her hips, rubbing slow circles as he kissed her. He held her close, afraid that if he let her go, she’d turn out to be a mirage, leaving him with bitter dust in his mouth and sand on his lips.
He wished to linger in this moment forever, but the need for air forced them to part, their separation gentle and reluctant. Her lips chased his, yearning for more, unwilling to part from the relief she desperately sook in her husband’s embrace. Unable to resist he drew her in once against, savoring her lips like the sweetest wild honey. Gently pulling away he rested his forehead against hers, swaying slowly as he watched his little love move with him.
Softly caressing her bump he asked, “How is our little gulbi? Not troubling her mama too much, I hope.” She laughed, her voice tinkling like a forgotten melody, “She’s your baby, Ardeth, she likes being naughty. Remember how you were as a child?”
Flushing in embarrassment, he hugged her closer, “Ya hayati, don’t remind me. Our children will be sweet, just like you. We will have a daughter with beautiful hair that you can braid, with a brave soul and joyful eyes. I can see that she’ll be stubborn like her mother but she’ll have a big heart, overflowing with love,” he mumbled against her hair.
“Hmm are you sure?” she teased him, grinning as he responded, “Yes, very sure.”
“Would you like to talk to her?” she asked as he quickly kneeled, eager to talk to his child.
“Hello ya ammoura, it’s your baba,” he whispered, placing a kiss against her belly as if kissing his child through her. “I’ve missed you and your ummi so much. You’ve grown so fast since I was here and soon you’ll be here in you baba’s arms, hmm?” He felt a small kick against his palm as he chuckled, “I can see you’ll be a father’s girl, hmm?” he asked as he felt two more kicks against his palm.
“She already has a favorite,” his wife chuckled as he smiled, kissing her belly. “I hope you know that I love you very much, you have a piece of my soul and you’re not even here yet,” he said chuckling, “I’ll be here for you, my beautiful child, always,” he vowed as he trailed kissed against her skin.
He slowly kissed her silvery scars, the evidence of their child growing. “My beautiful wife, growing to keep our baby nice and safe inside her,” he said as he kissed every single mark that scattered across her skin, a gorgeous canvas telling a beautiful story, of creation, of life, a testimony of their love.
“My sweet wife, so beautiful, a goddess made flesh, all for me,” he mumbled against her skin as he arose, trailing soft kisses against her body as he slowly peeled away her khaftan.
“Ardeth,” she whispered huskily as she undressed him with practiced ease, revealing golden skin as she peppered kisses against every inch. His neck, his chest, his scars, evidence of his survival. He shivered under her touch, spine arching as she trailed her fingers against his skin, breathing life into him with every touch. She gently clasped his wrist, leading him to their bed as she lay against the plush pillows. A goddess in her own right, she beckoned him closer with a curved finger, giggling as he eagerly joined her, his body cradled between her thighs as he laved her lips with his devotion. “My beautiful wife, the mother of my child, my everything,” he whispered, over and over.
Slowly he moved away, wrapping his body around her, cradling her as her back rested against his chest. She could feel his need against her, throbbing for attention as she clasped him, caressing his length as he moaned.
He drew his hands lower, caressing her body as she spread her legs, eager for him to touch her. As he drew closer to the place she needed him the most, her breath hitched as he rubbed slow circles against her. Arching into him she moaned, eager for more as he pleasured his beautiful wife.
He pulled his hand away as she whined, begging him for more, yet he reassured her with a kiss to her pouting lips, “Just a minute, Habibi,” as he lined up his cock against her entrance, the tip pressing against her as she ground against him.
Slowly pushing his hips, he entered her, inch-by-inch, feeling her stretch around him as he moaned, kissing her desperately, he could see heaven, taste it, breathe it. For he knew the closest he’d get to heaven was in the embrace of his beloved.
Gently cupping her breasts and cradling her stomach he thrust into her at a languid pace, drawing out every moment of pleasure as she threw her head back against him, begging for more, yet he insisted on savoring her.
“Hmm my sweet wife, working so hard to grow our child. Beautiful. A goddess come alive,” he whispered against her as he rubbed her clit, feeling her walls pulse around him.
“My medjai, my beautiful warrior,” she whispered back as she turned her head to kiss him, appreciating the man who was hers. “My beloved husband, please, make me cum,” she breathed.
“As you wish, my love,” he said, his fingers moving faster against her clit, eager for her to cum as he thrust deeply and slowly into her. He felt her arch into him at the new pace, different yet familiar.
She felt her spine tingle as her clit tingled under his ministrations, his gentle hands and whispered affections bringing her to the edge. The knot within her tightened as her hips moved in tandem with his, chasing her peak.
He felt her come undone as she shuddered, her walls closing deliciously around him as he was pushed over the edge, his seed buried deep inside her, claiming her as his once more.
“My goddess,” he whispered as he came, kissing her neck slowly, breathing in her scent as she tilted her head up against him, “My medjai,” she said, eyes gleaming with adoration as she kissed him.
She slowly laid her head against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. An exhausted sigh escaped her as she slowly drifted off to sleep lulled by her husband’s soft humming.
He hummed a song, an old tune his father used to sing, knowing it brought her peace and calmed the babe in her, enough for his beloved to sleep. As he covered her with bedsheets, admiring his wife, he hugged her close, her warmth in his arms a calming presence, a balm to his weary soul.
As he slowly drifted to sleep there was only one thing he was certain of, she was the reason he fought to protect the world, she would always be the reason he returned, she was his reason to breathe and as long as she was there, he’d crawl back home.

“It's a scar somewhere down inside of me, like something I cannot repair. Even though it will always be, I pretend it isn't there. I'm trapped in yesterday where the pain is all I know. I'll never break away 'cause when I'm alone I'm lost in these memories, living behind my own illusion. Lost all my dignity living inside my own confusion. […] I try to keep this pain inside, but I will never be alright.” Chester Bennington for Lost - Linkin Park

📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Back to Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve for this time being...
Onclin stayed composed throughout the third set, surviving the scare of several break and even match points. And he convincingly took the set (and match) with more variety in his returns.
In the middle of the third set, Gulbis missed a volley to close a rally to create Onclin's break point. That point was converted at the expense of Gulbis' forehand error, resulting in Onclin breaking at 4-3. Onclin further consolidated his lead at 5-3.
Although there were hiccups in the fourth game, Onclin eventually broke for the match after converting his last match point. While one of the the previous match points was notably saved because of Onclin's forehand error, Gulbis' double fault created another match point for Onclin, which was converted at the expense of Gulbis' forehand error.
While a recap will follow, there is an update from the Quimper doubles match...
