I had the pleasure of hearing Bree Stallings speak to the Guild of Charlotte Artists last night at the Mint Museum. It was a pleasure to meet North Carolina artist and environmental activist Mary Erickson the other evening when she spoke at the Mint Museum Randolph as a guest of the Guild of Charlotte Artists and Friends of the Mint. Last night I had the opportunity to meet a local creative treasure in the Charlotte community. Nellie Ashford is an elder artist working in collage. Her pieces, which tell stories of her life growing up in the rural South in the 1940’s-50’s, have been seen in the Harvey B Gantt Center for African-American Art. By using pieces of quilts, antique wallpapers, sheet music and found objects, she gives rich texture, color and history to each work.
