Walmart Offers ‘Free’ College Education to All U.S. Workers
Move over, Starbucks. Walmart is now burnishing its employer brand by offering to pay for any of its 1.4 million U.S. workers to attend college, provided that they contribute $1 a day.
Walmart to offer full- and part-time associates a path to a debt-free college degree https://t.co/BZvO6iIlnE #TeamWalmart

Committed to making higher education accessible, affordable and debt-free for its associates, Walmart will cover tuition, books and fees; and unlike some tuition-reimbursement programs offered by other companies, it won’t ask employees to foot any costs upfront.
Additionally, associates who complete Walmart Academy training will be able to earn college credits that can be applied at the three universities toward their respective degrees. Already, thousands of associates have collectively earned more than $210 million in college credits through their participation in Walmart Academy.
Happening Now: @Walmart puts #highered in reach for 1.4m US associates. Partners with @GuildEducation and their nonprofit partners, @UF , @BrandmanU , @BellevueU to launch custom college degree programs #TeamWalmart https://t.co/gbwzSjJhQ0

In a partnership with Guild Education that it highlighted in the announcement at its annual shareholders meeting and on Facebook Live, Walmart will pay for up to five years toward associate or bachelor degrees in business or supply-chain management from three universities, either on campus or online: University of Florida, Brandman University (in California) and Bellevue University (in Nebraska).
Rachel Carlson, CEO of Guild Education, stated that providing access to skills training and post-secondary education not only impacts the long-term prospects for its workers, it drives positive business outcomes as well.
“We’ve seen with companies offering a program like this that 15-to-20% of new job applicants indicate it was the reason they applied for the job,” she said. “And for folks already with the company, participating in a program like this has a 2.4x impact on promotion rates. It’s a win-win-win for companies, universities and, of course, students.”
“For our team, the work starts today. We’re already on the phone with @Walmart associates talking about their paths back to school, and our team will be there to coach them every step of the way!” – @RachelRCarlson #TeamWalmart pic.twitter.com/R5KrDBNyEJ

Walmart is also making its workers more digitally-savvy by bringing Oculus VR into its workplace training sessions in a gameification approach to learning.

In another employee-friendly move, Walmart is relaxing its dress code, as announced Wednesday at its shareholder meeting.
We’re rolling out new dress guidelines to all Walmart stores in the U.S. on June 4th! What are the big changes? ⁃All associates can now wear any color denim – yes, jeans! ⁃Shirts of any color or pattern are now allowed! ⁃Management can join hourly associates by wearing sneakers. No more 8+ mile days in dress shoes! #TeamWalmart
