San Miguel de Tucuman Ch R1: Guido Ivan Justo def. Maximo Zeitune [WC] 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 Match Stats
Tumblr media
馃摳 ATP official website
M. Zeitune's aggression initially outhit Justo from the baseline, but apart from the second serve problems, the latter absorbed some pace well while troubling the said serve at the same time, which caused more problems starting the second set. As a result, while relying on some of his forehands trying to outhit M. Zeitune, the latter likely went out of gas by the third set as Justo remained consistent on return throughout the match thanks to his experience. Consequently, despite M. Zeitune trying to optimize his chances by converting 60% of his 5 break points, Justo overwhelmingly produced 19 break points, converting 6 of them throughout the whole match, half of which came from the third set alone.
In addition, Justo appeared more stable in his service games than M. Zeitune. Scoring 3 aces than the latter's 1, the former had a slight edge with his first serves by winning 7% more points than M. Zeitune with 67%, allowing him to get out of trouble numerous times. On the other hand, it was statistically confirmed that M. Zeitune's second serve problems starting in the middle of the second set made it even more vulnerable to attacks as his 7 double faults faded his second serve winning percentage to 35%, 5% lower than Justo, who still won 40% of his second serve points despite his sole double-fault.
In the second round, Justo will face seventh seed Valerio Aboian, who straightforwardly defeated Pedro Boscardin Dias 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. Knowing Valerio's potential, this could be an interesting test to check on Justo's aggression, where an additional depth to their return games should help them maintaining their range throughout the match. This might be one of those type of matches that could end up in a rollercoaster, but only one could stand out from their balance. Should be one of those matches to look forward to!

The third set became a one-way traffic due to a possibility that M. Zeitune ran out of gas. It all started from his erratic service game to start the third set, as his prevalent +1 and forehand errors, which also indicated shot rushes, resulted in Justo's early break to 1-0 before the latter minimized the gap through a forehand pass before consolidating his lead to 2-0. Somehow, a backhand error initially generated Justo's initial break points in the next game that even if it was saved through a forehand winner, a +1 forehand error and a double-fault made the double-break lead inevitable (3-0).
Subsequently, Justo strengthened his position with a service game hold to 4-0. Somehow, Justo generated another break point through a backhand down-the-line pass before another unforced error broke to 5-0. As a result, Justo earned an opportunity to serve for the match, where despite trailing 2 points by the start of the match, he managed to recover from the deficit to finally serve the third-set bagel (6-0) to secure his spot in the second round.

The second set turned out to be a different set of chaos as M. Zeitune struggled to retain his range as he faced his second serve problems while Justo began to absorb some pace and becoming more aggressive. As a result, several breaking games became inevitable before one settled their service game right in time for a possible momentum shift. Here was how everything unfolded.
In the first game, Justo started redirecting M. Zeitune from the baseline, with his preceding forehand started to work wonders as the former broke 1-0 to start the set. He then consolidated the lead to 2-0, but M. Zeitune became a stiff opposition as soon as he tried to regain his range, scoring a forehand winner his way to generate his break point before he broke thanks to his one-handed backhand down-the-line winner (2-1). To continue, he then leveled the play to 2-2 before Justo held his serves to 3-2.
The aforementioned service game hold from Justo became crucial as he started pressing M. Zeitune more from the baseline, one of which through his preceding forehand once again that created his initial break point. Even though the latter saved one of those, the break points kept coming as a result of his second serves inconsistencies marked by his +1 errors and some double faults in between. On the other hand, Justo had a break point made through a smash, and got converted several moments later due to M. Zeitune's failed tweener (4-2) only to be broken back with a forehand winner (4-3).
The breaking game did not stop there. Justo saw that opportunity again as M. Zeitune's impatience hampered him to level the play. From here, M. Zeitune got outhit from his forehand side for the deuce before Justo smashed his way for another break point. Without any hesitation, it was converted to 5-3, and Justo earned an opportunity to serve for the second set, where even though he had to overcome a deficit midway, he still managed to take the second set 6-3 to force the deciding set in the match that headlined the evening in San Miguel de Tucuman.

Current junior World No. 38 (career-high World No. 34 attained in March 18, 2024) and wild card Maximo Zeitune, who could not travel to the Australian Open juniors due to budget constraints, made his Challenger-level debut in San Miguel de Tucuman Challenger (50) right at home as he faced his fellow Argentinean Guido Ivan Justo in the first round. Regardless of the outcome, this match revealed some of his interesting potentials, especially considering the latter is more experienced in the Challenger-level still trying to break even.
To start, M. Zeitune's preceding slice to Justo's unforced error generated his break point right in the first set of this match, but the latter still managed to hold his serves to 1-0. Even though both players had their chances, the break of serve did not come until the seventh game, where M. Zeitune broke to 4-3 due to Justo's forehand errors moments after the former's forehand winner to equalize the point to 30-30 in the fourth point, as well as smashing it to force another deuce midway. By the end of that game, Justo had to take a medical timeout.
Afterward, M. Zeitune held his serves to 5-3, and earned an opportunity to serve for the first set. However, Justo started to become slightly more offensive, generating his break point through a backhand down-the-line winner. M. Zeitune did not back down as he recovered from the deficit, forcing the deuce before he eventually took the first set 6-4 to set himself in front in this match, possibly revealing part of his tremendous potential along the way.

Florianopolis Ch Q2: Daniel Cukierman [2] def. Guido Ivan Justo [9] 6-4, 2-0 ret. Match Stats
Tumblr media
馃摳 ATP official website
Initially, Justo had a great start to the match before the physical problems haunted him, probably due to the constant rallying this match took as Cukierman tried to absorb some pace. The only break of serve (which accounted for 25% of his break point conversion) came from the early break as Cukierman missed his forehand side early on, but he managed to regain his defense-to-offense mechanisms in time to convert 3 out of his 7 break points, where his break points came from his offensives right from the start of the match, as well as his point construction as evident by his successful drop shot for his latest set point as part of the drop-shot festival mid-match.
On the other hand, Cukierman also had a solid service game despite trailing by the start of the match. Firing 4 aces than Justo鈥檚 0, Cukierman still had a stand-out first serve winning percentage with 86%, which helped him getting out of trouble since the middle of the match. However, the physical problems might have affected Justo鈥檚 second serves as he could only win 28% of his second serve points, 27% lesser than Cukierman as the former double-faulted twice along the way.
In his third Challenger-level main draw appearance from the qualifications from the last three tournaments, Cukierman will face either his fellow qualifier, wild card Nicolas Zanellato (who has been on a tear in the past few tournaments), or sixth seed Geoffrey Blancaneaux. This could be an intriguing moment to see where his clay Challenger level is at, especially with a possibility of a deep run is probably wide open after 2 Challenger 50-level quarterfinals showing to kick off his season. Should still be worth following!

Cukierman solidly started the game by holding his serves to 1-0 before leading several points ahead in the subsequent game due to Justo's errors. Most of the errors came from his forehand side, where he turned out to be out of reach. One of those generated Cukierman's break point, which was converted due to another error (2-0).
Subsequently, Cukierman won a point for his game point as he was slated to hold the said service game. However, due to his physical situation, Justo retired still down 0-2, thus Cukierman advanced to the main draw.

The action in the Florianopolis Challenger kicked off with the final qualification rounds, one of which featured second seed Daniel Cukierman, who yesterday confidently defeated alternate Ignacio Carou 6-1, 6-3 in the battle of doubles frequents, and ninth seed Guido Ivan Justo, who stunned local wild card Daniel Vecchio Couldrey Ribeiro 6-1, 6-0 in the first qualifying round. This could have been an intriguing test to Cukierman's clay game, with both depth and aggression being the aspects of attention, point construction being another.
Right at the second game, Cukierman's defenses initially garnered attention as he went after Justo's backhands, 2 of which early errors came in the first 2 points before Cukierman had a break point out of Justo's double fault, which was neutralized thanks to the latter's forehand down-the-line winner. This cycle then continued, including Cukierman foiling Justo's game point with a forehand down-the-line winner before the ninth seed won the next 2 points to hold his serves 1-1. However, the ninth seed had a timely forehand winner in response to Cukierman's high-ball forehand before the latter misfired his forehands, one of which went up in the air, for Justo's early break to 2-1. He then consolidated the said lead to 3-1.
In the subsequent game, Justo seemed to keep striking as his backhand winner set himself one point ahead before having 2 break points, all of which were foiled thanks to Cukierman's groundstrokes. Eventually, Cukierman held the said service game 3-2 and broke back to 3-3 due to another series of errors from the ninth seed outside of Cukierman's forehand winner to win the third point for the lead, holding his serves 4-3 to confirm the level of play.
Three games later, Justo randomly fired an unreturned serve to Cukierman's backhand return ace, setting the latter one point ahead before notably having a break point out of a forehand winner. Despite being foiled, Cukierman came up with another one due to Justo's double fault, and the third one happened thanks to his drop shot, before being converted due to Justo's +1 drop shot error to break for the first set 6-4, thus emphasizing the necessity of a proper execution for their final shot.

Florianopolis Ch R2: M. Tomas Barrios Vera [1] def. Guido Ivan Justo 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
馃摳 ATP/WTA Joint App
Barrios Vera survived the scare of being one set and a break down (3-6, 2-3) and dug even deeper when he felt better. He went after Justo's shots, hence he could control the flow and maintained it until the end of the match.
Even though 72% of his first serves were in, Justo won 11% lesser points from his first serves than his second, especially since Barrios Vera regained his serve and its efficacy could sometimes be unbreakable with some solid follow-ups. The Argentinean just double-faulted once, but the rushing did not help as he won 3% lesser points from his second serves, although he might have appeared more clutch by saving 8% more break points than Barrios Vera.
However, the Chilean could make the best out of his power starting the second set to aid his returns. Being able to return most of Justo's serves, he could assert that power until Justo was kept off balance, especially from his forehand side. He drove Justo across, albeit with a little creativity was needed, but the baseline was mostly the reason Barrios Vera stood out at this match. As a result, Barrios Vera could come up with 19 opportunities to break, even if Justo had a 40% break point conversion. He took his chances well, and that was it.
In the quarterfinals, Barrios Vera will face Genaro Alberto Olivieri, who defeated qualifier Orlando Luz 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-2. Coming from another run in Sarasota Challenger last week, this match could be exciting, as both players' dynamics will be tested. The rallies were one, but who would stay after controlling the moment would be another as both are almost similarly aggressive (except Olivieri often relied on his second serve, while Barrios Vera also had a similar amount of power to his shots).

Back to the other court...
The start of the third set was a see-saw before Barrios Vera finally rediscovered his range. Justo was completely driven off the balance, which was the case by the end of the match.
Justo's erratic service game initially did not help as Barrios Vera broke to 1-0. However, after several holding games, Barrios Vera found himself broken back for the same reason, and Justo was seen rushing his forehands by the time the Chilean broke back to 3-2. The latter became a turning point as Barrios Vera subsequently held to 4-3.
However, the eighth game in this match proved to be another turning point, as Barrios Vera's offense toward Justo's forehand secured him the break to 5-3, enabling him the chance to serve for the match. Without further ado, even if there was a match point save, Barrios Vera took the third set 6-3 at the expense of Justo's forehand error, securing him the spot to the quarterfinals.
On the neighboring court, however...

The end of the second set marked a step-up process for Barrios Vera, as he finally applied it to the critical points of the second set. Justo initially had the moment for half the set, but Barrios Vera started outpacing him and stole the moment.
It started when Justo broke to 3-2 at the expense of Barrios Vera's forehand error, but another erratic service game resulted in him getting broken back to 3-3. Two games later, the pressure points handling were not there as Barrios Vera went after his forehand, resulting in him breaking to 5-3 at the expense of that forehand error from Justo.
The Chilean then had the opportunity to serve for the second set, which he did successfully with an almost unreturned serve, where Justo's forehand could not reach over the net. As a result, Barrios Vera took the second set 6-3, and brought the match to the distance.

Guido Ivan Justo (ranked 849 as of April 17, 2023) made his Challenger debut by defeating Gonzalo Villanueva, who has ranked 300+ spots ahead of him. He then faced M. Tomas Barrios Vera, whose rank is 400+ above. Should be a good test, knowing the similarity of their game.
A fiery start from Justo secured him 3 break points in the fourth game, converting the latest due to Barrios Vera's error in a forehand-to-forehand exchange to 3-1. It was not enough, Justo broke again to 5-1 after a working volley, hence having the opportunity to serve for the first set.
For some reason, Barrios Vera had a medical timeout before Justo served for the first set. Although the first chance failed because of his erratic service game, Justo still controlled the first set flow well by serving it out in the second chance to 6-3 after Barrios Vera hit a backhand error.

Qualifying for the main draw for the three straight weeks due to Guido Ivan Justo's retirement down 4-6, 0-2 in the second set of their second qualifying round encounter yesterday, qualifier Daniel Cukierman faced wild card Pedro Boscardin Dias in the first round. While this could have been interesting to see for their aggression reasons, this match turned out to be almost a one-way traffic as Cukierman tried to overpower Boscardin Dias in most occasions.
To start, Cukierman initially went after Boscardin Dias' forehand before the latter also missed his backhand to create his initial break point right in the first game. Even though Boscardin Dias saved two of those, another unforced error could not help except for the firmer to break early to 1-0. Strengthening his lead to 2-0, he somehow doubled the break to 3-0 before consolidating the play to 4-0.
Boscardin Dias might have had some chances, but he found himself in trouble once he faced his second break point due to his double fault. Cukierman then came up with an instinctive volley winner to secure the triple-break lead to 5-0, thus opening up a chance for him to serve for the first set bagel. Without any further hesitation, despite conceding a point midway, Cukierman still took the first set 6-0 for his one-set lead at this match.

Florianopolis Ch Q1: Daniel Cukierman [2] def. Ignacio Carou [Alt] 6-1, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
馃摳 ATP official website
This was a statement victory from Cukierman, who capitalized on I. Carou's erratic start to the match by becoming more offensive from his shots. This way, most of the match was in his racquet, where he had a whopping 15 break points as a result of I. Carou's balance already being off from the setup, converting 4 of them throughout both sets to assert further dominance.
Furthermore, Cukierman also appeared flawless on serve. Firing 3 aces than I. Carou's 1, Cukierman almost had a perfect first serve winning percentage at 95%, which helped him to dominate the flow. I. Carou's 5 double faults, on par with his third shot rushes, could only fade his second serve winning percentage to 39%, 26% lower than Cukierman, thus the second seed could appear more aggressive in this match.
In tomorrow's second qualifying round, Cukierman will face ninth seed Guido Ivan Justo, who previously defeated wild card Daniel Vecchio Couldrey Rebelo 6-1, 6-0 in the first qualifying round. This could put an interesting test in their aggression and depth, as well as their point construction to see how their range turned out. Could be a match of a kind!

Florianopolis Ch QF: Eduardo Ribeiro def. Joao Fonseca [WC] 6-1, 6-7(5), 7-5 mid-match stats (3rd set)
Tumblr media
馃摳 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Fonseca could have had the moment despite his nervy first set start, but E. Ribeiro found a way to bounce back, creating more chances and utilizing them in his favor.
Fonseca might have scored 6 aces, but his 4 double faults could not help carry his second serve as he was 11% behind E. Ribeiro in that regard. Back to the first serves, E. Ribeiro had a slightly more effective first serve winning percentage by winning 66% points from there. Not only such effective serves overwhelmed Fonseca at first, but also he followed it up nicely by going after Fonseca's shots.
Right after the early break in the second set, Fonseca rediscovered his intuitiveness and craftiness trying to turn it around, helping him to match E. Ribeiro's pace in rallies. However, E. Ribeiro came up with even more once he pressed Fonseca when he was 3-1 up in the third set, opening a gateway to pull a comeback to take it all. Besides, he was also in control in the entire first set because of Fonseca's nervy start. As a result, E. Ribeiro had 6 more opportunities to break compared to Fonseca, who converted 41% of his points from.
In his first Challenger semifinal ever, first seed M. Tomas Barrios Vera awaits, as he defeated fifth seed Genaro Alberto Olivieri 6-3, 7-6(4) earlier. Knowing the level swing could happen to Barrios Vera at times (which was the case in the second round against qualifier Guido Ivan Justo), E. Ribeiro might "only" need to stay stable during the match. However, considering both players' power, their execution of the controlled aggression would also be a testing element. When both players are on, get ready for a saucy match-up.
