What Will the End of the World Look Like?

The Theatre Party 2015 process started in early May, upon my return stateside after four months traveling Europe (pretending to study). I came back jet-lagged, the good kind of exhausted, but still hungry to get back to work. Being abroad was more time spent marinating and digesting than cooking. A lot of well-crafted and rare books to read, but not a lot of time to ‘write.’ When Carter approached me about a second installment of Theatre Party, our (now annual) student-run-summer-fest of new theatrical work, I didn’t need to be convinced.

As Carter began surveying interest and collecting names of the participants for this summer, we had several conversations about what my role would be this time around. I had a great experience performing in “Untitled” last summer. But, he was in need of a third writer, and I signed on.

Theatre Party writers are in an awesome and terrifying position. It’s an awesome position because our work will definitely be produced by live actors in ‘x’ number of weeks. It’s terrifying for the same reason. Immediately, my mind was identifying sources of inspiration everywhere. I knew that my friend Kit would be one of my collaborators on the project, bringing his music composition talents into the mix. I also knew that my friend Glyne would be directing my piece. I was, and am still, so excited about working with these guys. Kit, because we have a really solid relationship as creators. Glyne, because she had read a role in one of my plays previously, and understands my voice as a writer and creator in a way that some don’t.

Kit, Glyne, and I have the kind of creative relationship in which we are very formal about scheduling meetings via text or e-mail, but will inevitably end up in a room together at some point engaging in conversation about our project, deciding to cancel the meeting we had planned. These two are passionate people who are great at what they do, and it’s a relief. During initial meetings, I proposed an idea for our piece that we haven’t totally deviated from since, which is very lucky happenstance.

We agreed as a team to write our piece for the actors we receive during casting. So, my process was postponed until I knew who I was writing for. I took notes about possible themes, uses of audience, and ways to incorporate Kit’s music, but I didn’t really start writing until the cast had been assembled. We all had a basic idea of who we wanted in our piece, and luckily, all those cast members became ours! Jake Sellers, Grace Theobald, and Melissa Mihovich.

I knew I had to get further inside the minds of these actors before I began writing characters for them. I conducted a series of interviews in person and over the phone regarding the general concept of our play. I asked questions like, “What will the end of the world look like?” I had Glyne and Kit submit questions for me to ask the actors, as well. I typed up the actors’ answers as I listened, and compiled the answers into a document that I began to write from. Draft one was born!

I shared draft one with my fellow creatives Kit and Glyne, who in return gave me notes and observations and (on Kit’s end) links to music he had composed for the piece. Very very exciting. But, back to the drawing board to incorporate their notes and concerns about the piece.

Eventually…Draft two was born! And by then it was already mid-July. And I decided I needed to get it out to our actors, regardless of whether I thought it was perfect or complete. I had to remind myself that I could work on the script endlessly, but at some point I have to hand the reins over to Glyne. The nice thing is that Glyne and I have agreed to keep the script rather fluid in rehearsal. We want to sacrifice the comfort of securing the text, favoring instead creative impulses that will arise in rehearsals, hopefully causing the piece to conform more closely to the site and to the actors.

I don’t want to say too much about the content of the piece, because then it won’t be a fun surprise! I can, however, share with you the versions of titles I went through over the writing process:

-Song Session at the End of the World

-When the World Ends

-When the World Ends (I Wish to be Swimming)

-Floodpocalypse

-Floodpocalypse Now!

And, finally, the current title:

AUGUST 25 FLOODPOCALYPSE.

It’s in all caps because I’m excited.

As a final note:

If it hadn’t been for the common urge Carter and I felt for creating original student work in a realm outside our University department, none of this would have been possible in the first place. Theatre Party is his brainchild. Although there are countless student artists who keep the project alive, he’s the reason it exists. For me, Carter is a living example of two things. One: that artists must shamelessly talk their work into existence. Two: that exciting work happens when you get many artists to talk about their ideas together in the same room.

The seeds have been sown. I’m so excited to see what we create.
