SEGURIDAD | What everyone is talking about behind closed doors and offline.
In our small fishing and farming villageāturned gringo hotspotābeyond the fight for water, the exponentially rising costs of living, and Ticos getting pushed out by foreigners, crime is a very real and growing side effect of its gentrification, or what more and more are referring to as neo-colonization (1) (2).
Yesterday morning, Tuesday the 5th of November, the OIJ (the primary law enforcement agency of Costa Rica) carried out several raids in San Jose and Guanacaste. These raids resulted in the arrest of six suspects of a criminal group dedicated to house robberies, with āwhat is believed to be up to an economic loss of ā”1,000 millionā (3) (just under USD$2 million).
Specifically, in one of the raids, the suspects were apprehended from an AirBnB they were renting in the neighborhood of Surfside, Potrero (4). According to US Embassy officials, it is not unknown that areas with a concentration of AirBnBs and short-term rentals, like Surfside, are incredibly vulnerable to this type of crime, especially when itās easy to discover what items areāand potentially areāinside for the taking (5).
LOOKING AT THE BIG PICTURE
While the unprecedented growth in our region (6) has made it clear there has been a huge injection of money to our beach town and neighboring poblados, it is arguable if the flood of new money has actually brought better infrastructure, diverse culture, and (as we are talking about it) reduced crimeāthe core āprosā of gentrification, as many champion.
By way of illustration:
Our unregulated roads, although now paved because of growth, are too narrow and unsafe (7) for the large population of those without the luxury of vehicles, among other factors like poor planning for drainage, resulting in the floods we are experiencing today.
The threat of the irreversible salinization of our aquifer becomes more real (8) (9) with more green lights given for continued development, all the while water shut offs are still real when the rain stops in dry season.
More historical locations and local identity is actively being torn down (10), in the same breath as new laws are proposed to allow fresh businesses in their place (11), and furthermore, those in local seats denouncing these acts are stripped of their titles (12) .
Locals are being outpriced and displaced from their community (13), replaced with 2nd homes used for financial gain by foreigners.
Our local police do not have the money for their own station, let alone could justify asking for more reinforcements, as their pleads to get support and real documentation on crime (14), like denuncias, are swept under the rug.
It seems like what we used to experience as local petty theft in hard times is turning into a social desperation and crime epidemic. Not to mention, right or wrong, the palpable animosity towards the foreigner influx and domination of these targeted regions, seems intrinsic to this growing problem.
Ā
HOW DO WE MOVE FORWARD? HOW DO WE STAY SAFE?
It is critical, more so than ever, that everyone in our community not only be aware of these issues and take them into consideration, but also have open and transparent communications with a shared goal of preserving the safety of the people, land, and wildlife of our beloved poblados: A concerted effort by everyone, old and new, together.
This includes making sure to integrate with your community and hopefully full-heartedly. We offer the following suggestions:
Know your neighbors. A friendly āUpeā can bypass the lack of doorbells, and allow for an introduction to a relationship along the lines of a Gump to your Forest. Small towns are incredibly conducive for neighbors looking out for you in times of need, and vice versa, even if you donāt like each other.
Connect with your community. Join your local ADI (Associacion Desarrollo Integral de [insert town]). They are the only legally recognized, government sanctioned organization at the community level (in accordance with Law 3859 (15)). Each town has different projects and priorities, therefore itās important to join in the local conversation; so you not only know whatās going on, but can be a part of the solution with suggestions, attending important town halls, volunteering, voting for your representatives, etc.
Potrero: [email protected]
Flamingo: [email protected]Ā
Brasilito: [email protected]Ā
Huacas: [email protected]Ā
If you donāt see your town listed, give āem a google, or reach out to us. We are connected with the UniĆ³n Costera, the association of ADIs from Potrero down to Junquillal (currently).
Speak Spanish, or at least try. It can be challenging to learn a new language, but not only is it the national language, it is the language of your neighbors. Trying to speak Spanish, shows respect and good faith to the community you are a part of, and goes noted.
Know your surroundings. We covered neighbors, but do you know where your local police are? Do you know their limitations, needs, asksā¦you name it? Please read some outlined points from one of the important meetings with government representatives, OIJ, local police (Fuerza), local organizations and the community back in February, when a resident of the area was critically injured from a brutal robbery walking on the streets of Surfside.
Most importantly, in cases of emergency, call 9-1-1 first. All calls are recorded and can be used as data points. The operator will connect you with the appropriate party. For local office numbers, see the following:
Fuerza Flamingo:Ā 2654-5086 |Ā 2654-6136
Coast Guard Flamingo: 2654-5033 | 2654-6193 | Canal 16
Fuerza Brasilito:Ā 2600-2086
OIJ Santa Cruz: 2681-4062, 2681-4099
For more local authorities, Upe is a great one stop resource for our and surrounding communities (see the bottom of their homepage for Police, Fire, Medical, etc).
Network online for safety. ADI Tamarindo, one of the highest performing ADIs in CR, has been able to vet and impressively connect their community to the local police on the ground with an app called SoSafe. It costs them $1 per year, per user. While Potrero has not been able to make the direct connection yet, the app is free. As a user, you can receive/make notifications on robberies, suspicious activities, water breaks, even lost dogs. While of course it is not optimal for the community that the police in Flamingo/Potrero/Brasilito are not directly connected and held responsible to reports on the app yet, it is worth noting SoSafe is a useful data source with metadata attached, especially since there is a tendency to refrain from filing (desperately needed) official police reports, denuncias.
We whole-heartedly love our community and want to move forward safely, and in peace with all our neighbors. Please let us know if you have additional suggestions for the safety of your community members, so they can be shared with your neighbors.
Moreover we have provided outside resources for reference on many points. We invite the sharing of more information with a multitude of resources, so we can more clearly see the big picture from more sides. Feel free to share more with us, if you feel we missed any.
Juntos podemos. Ya, vamos!
Amor, amor, amor,

First CR triathlonā¦first solo road tripā¦and a little added adventure of figuring out how/where to charge my car with the assistance of some kind helpers. ā¤ļø
Iāve found a great running/triathlon team here that has embraced the gringa. ;) So Iāve been excited to do my first triathlon in Costa Ricaā¦and then I realized that it was the same weekend that Rick would be on an annual fishing trip, so competing would mean driving myselfā¦for the first time outside of San JosĆ©ā¦for 3.5 hours to the beachā¦and then figuring out the charging network for my electric vehicle. Hmm.
I sat on the decision for a couple weeksā¦and then signed up. Figured if I had paid the $, Iād have to figure it out! So grandma to the rescueā¦she flew down to stay with Kai and I packed up the car.
I got lucky with a gorgeous day and a great stretch of new highway to the beach. And I knew I was as heading in the right direction when I pulled up behind a van with about 15 bikes on top. Step 1ā¦get there, solo. Done!
So I found my Airbnb, got my race packet and figured I should charge my car so I didnāt worry about it the next day as I headed home after the race. You see, I decided to buy an EV as we moved to CR, but I had yet to drive it outside of San Jose since Rick always drives his car for road trips. So I had never charged my car outside of our garage. Hmmā¦adventure #2ā¦
Easily found the first charger right near packet pickupā¦no luck. For some reason it doesnāt seem to recognize my car, despite a very kind American man trying to help me. No problemā¦I find another charger in my app and head to the next town north. After talking my way into the hotel where it was located with my limited Spanishā¦again, no luck. But the sweet men pictured above must have pushed every button trying to help. Hmm. Okay, no problemā¦headed to the next town south. At this point Iām getting a tour of Guanacaste I hadnāt planned on, but I have time and still plenty of charge, so Pura Vida! Third chargerā¦in front of a hardware store in a small townā¦it works! But will take 8 hours. Oh myā¦not exactly where I thought Iād spend my beach weekend pre-triathlon. So I message my Airbnb host who mentions a new charger back near where I am staying, which is not yet in my app. Success! I plug my car in and head to the beach to see where we will start the swim in the morning and to watch the sunset. Iām feeling quite accomplishedā¦and I havenāt even done a triathlon yet!
Post sunset, I retrieve my (fully charged, whew!) car and head to dinner with my team. Ready for step #3 of the weekendā¦the actual triathlon!
Readyā¦swim, bike, run, done! So much fun. In the US, triathlon rules prohibit spectators from assisting athletes in any way. But here, every team had a tent and volunteers with water, ice, sports drink and would cheer on and chase down their teammates with whatever they needed! The energy was amazing!
After the rest of the team finished their longer races I grabbed breakfast (gallo pinto, typical CR breakfast, never tasted so good!) and got on the road back home to San Jose.
Just the weekend I needed. Out of my comfort zone for sure but Iāll admit I felt pretty proud of myself for just doing it.
Thankful for grandma for coming down to be with Kai, Rick for leaving me thoughtful notes of encouragement and my coworkers who were on call if I got myself into trouble on my first solo road trip in a new country. Pura vida!

Tamarindo, Costa Rica - Ultimate Beach Vacation Destination
Tamarindo Orientation
Tamarindo, Costa Rica is located at the start of the Nicoya Peninsula in the province of Guanacaste. It faces the Pacific and offers a long expanse of beach for sun worshipers and a consistent swell for surfers. The sand is golden and sprinkled with gorgeous little spiraling shells.
Directly to the north of Tamarindo beach is the Palo Seco river mouth and then Playa Grande, a long scimitar of beach that is also a protected park. This park, Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas, is a breeding ground of the enormous and endangered leatherback turtle, which on average weighs 1000lbs (455kg) and measures over six feet in length (2m). Leatherbacks' nesting season is from October to March and most eggs are laid at night. This miracle of nature can be seen nightly, but you'll need to hire a guide in order to legally access the park past dusk. During the day the river-mouth between Playa Grande and Playa Tamarindo can be crossed at low tide, or you can hop on a small boat and be ferried across for a nominal fee.
Many Options for Lodging and Food
Being one of the most developed beach resort towns in Costa Rica, Tamarindo offers an array of accommodations from luxury resorts to simple cabins. There are also numerous dining options and international cuisine, including some Tours Tamarindo familiar fast food chains in case you're in need of comfort food. Despite the town's growth it is still small and accessible, without of any of the overdeveloped feel of the Mayan Riviera and other parts of coastal Mexico. But don't worry, there's still plenty of partying and a vibrant, unpretentious nightlife.
Adventures Galore
Adventure activities abound here, with surfing and fishing being two of the main draws. Tamarindo's consistent but reasonably sized surf has made it the mecca for surfers and would-be surfers alike. There are numerous surf shops offering lessons in the range of $25-30 for an hour to an hour and a half. Surfboard rentals range from $10 to $25 per day with longboards costing more.
Costa Rica fishing aficionados will be delighted by all the possibilities in Tamarindo. Species are varied and abundant, and the there are numerous sportfishing charter boats for hire. Planning your trip between the months of April and November is your best bet to avoid the seasonal high winds off the coast of Guanacaste. Despite this, the waters are teeming with billfish, dorado (mahi mahi/dolphinfish), and tuna year round. For marlin, the best months are June and July -- same for tuna. Dorado is best from June to October.
Other activity options include jungle canopy tours on zip lines, atv tours, horseback riding, and mangrove tours in the Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge. A variety of companies in town can arrange tours, including your hotel in most cases.
Getting to Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Tamarindo's proximity to an international airport makes it very appealing, especially since you don't have to pass through Costa Rica's congested capital, San Jose. Daniel Oduber Airport in Liberia (code: LIR), serviced by American Airlines, Delta, and US Airways et al, is about an hour to an hour-and-a-half drive from Tamarindo beach by rental car or taxi.
A Great Destination
In sum, Tamarindo is a great, fun destination for your Costa Rica vacation - the nightlife is great too. Perhaps it's not as 'authentic' as some other towns, but the range of amenities and activities certainly create an appealing locale to relax, sip a cold cocktail, and watch a beautiful sunset while planning out your next adventure.

āPlaya Blanca- Tidepool 1ā³ (2016) Staetdler marker pen, Prismacolor marker, Pitt pen
*From my trip to Guanacaste, Costa Rica, a beautiful region I am very lucky to have been taken to at the last minute by my generous older relatives; I spent the week staring at every crag I could of the beaches and stretching my rusty Spanish meeting the very nice and interesting citizens there, who were delighted to have someone respectfully attempt to use their language rather than assume the world speaks American english.Ā
{It was a frequent amusement to them that I had such an odd accent; Iām not fluent but didnāt sound obviously American in my accent- because most of my teachers happened to study in Spain. I picked up a Spanish Zeta lisp that terribly amused the latin american dialect speakers, not in the least because itās anachronistic and probably a weird partial presence- like someone halfway between an American and British accent I suspect. It always made for a good conversation to explain why I had a decent but odd pronunciation for someone who studied in American classrooms}Ā
(As the only person comfortable with Spanish in a foreign country accompanying the three elderly members of the original group, none of whom thought about the language factor, letās just say they were delighted to have brought an accidental translator along and I earned my keep, ha.)Ā
