The beginnings of Carnival in Guadeloupe started in the 17th century with the European settlers. Starting off as pre-lent festivities with masked balls hosted by the whites on the island. The African enslaved population was prohibited from assembling because of the Article 16 of the “Code Noir” promulgated by the King of France, Louis XIV, in 1685. Yet the enslaved began doing celebrations of their own, mimicking their slave masters and intermixing their African traditions into a unique hybrid culture of what we know as Caribbean carnival . Guadeloupe is one of the few remaining carnivals that do not showcase much of the skimpy bikinis and feather style costumes that have now over taken much of the region, becoming more of a money making enterprise rather that the traditional cultural depictions. Certain Carnival bands known as the Group a Po often openly exhibit anti colonialist messages in their presentation. Some crack the whip along the procession route as a reminder of the abuses of slavery whilst others burn incense to drive away evil spirits - showing the dualities of colonialism .
