Hi........if you don't mind me asking, who are your favorite romantic relationship's couples in books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series (can be canon or non-canon)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....

Thanks for the ask! Actually, I do plan to make some posts about my anime OTPs. As you can see how much I loved anime, most of the OTPs I loved are from anime series so here are some:

HAK x YONA (Akatsuki no Yona)

I really love the relationship between these two. They're childhood friends, Yona is a princess and Hak is one of the generals of their kingdom. Hak was already in love with Yona since they were young but decided not to confess to her because of their statuses. What I love the most about them is their antics. Hak is quite a bully and since he's already close to Yona since they were kids despite being the princess, he can pretty much tell her whatever he wanted to say, except for the fact that he loves her. Their relationship is already developing in the latest chapters of the manga but let's not talk about spoilers. (￣▽￣*)ゞ

MONKEY D. LUFFY x BOA HANCOCK (One Piece)

This is definitely not canon. But I really love their interactions and how Boa is head over heels for Luffy. Imagine these two having their own kids. Maybe they'll be able to use the emperor's haki at a very young age. LOL

If you're gonna ask me, I wanted an episode where Sanji will realize that Boa loves Luffy and will get jealous again just like how he reacted with Zoro and Hiyori. (Oh, and I do ship Zoro and Hiyori too)

HORI MASAYUKI x KASHIMA YUU (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)

GSNK is one of my favorite anime romcoms of all time. And my favorite couple is Hori and Kashima. They have this very funny senpai-kouhai relationship and they are both members of the same club. Hori really loves Kashima's face and finds her very handsome while Kashima thinks that Hori wants to be a princess and wanted to treat him as one. Unfortunately, there are very few moments in the anime so I had to read the manga.

NIFUJI HIROTAKA x MOMOSE NARUMI & KABAKURA TAROU x KOYANAGI HANAKO (Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii)

Otaku couples! Who wouldn't love them? If ever I get into a relationship, I'd like for my partner to at least like anime so we can watch anime together. Hahaha. Okay, enough about me. Going back to these couples, they really are fun to watch. They would bicker and fight just like any normal couple would do but their relationship also showcases their love for anime and games. I won't even get tired of watching these couples all day.

AOI ASHITO x ICHIJOU HANA (Ao Ashi)

I don't usually ship any couples in sports anime because duh, the highlight should be the sports. Hahaha. Who am I kidding?? At least, that's it for me. But the story of these two high school students really gets to me. Hana became the very first fan of Ashito because he reminds her of her first love and favorite player. Hana is very supportive of Ashito and they were already on a first-name basis at the beginning of the story. Whenever Ashito is feeling lost, even if Hana doesn't understand anything about soccer, she always manages to find the right words to say to him. For me, the author did a great job of developing the relationship between these two in the story. This couple is not yet canon but I do believe they will be as I am also updated in the manga. Oops. Spoilers. XD

AKABOSHI BISCO x NEKOYANAGI MILO (Sabikui Bisco)

I do ship these two but I guess not too much in a romantic sense but in a platonic sense? I watched the anime and read until the 2nd volume of the light novel. And with that, I can really tell how much these two care for each other. They're partners and even promised to be together until their last breaths. The way they are both willing to sacrifice themselves for one another, their banters, their interactions. everything. Everything is just so precious! This is not canon but, oh well. I can really see that they love each other even if not in a romantic sense.

And that's about it! I still have other OTPs but these are some I remembered almost instantly. Sorry, you had to read a very long post, Elaine. As you may have noticed, my favorite couples are not really some of the most shipped by fandoms. Maybe, I just do have a weird taste. ( ◡‿◡ *)

Autumn is also the mark of a new semester of anime for me to watch with the anime club I'm in. We started 6 new shows and will pick up 2 more in the spring, as we ended up with shorter ones this time around.

First of, we started with Odd Taxi, which I voted for and am happy to be watching. I tried to watch it when it originally aired, but something about the tone and atmosphere put me off from it. However, it also seemed unique enough that I always felt like I was missing out and needed to get back to it one day, and now I will be forced to watch it, yay!

Then we're watching Gankutsuou, which I also voted for and have been wanting to watch for years. I cannot state how much I love the style. I'm always here for tragedies and revenge stories as well. Beyond that I'm not sure what to expect, since this is NOT the Count of Monte Cristo story I'm familiar with, but I'm super exited to finally be watching it!

Although I didn't vote for Great Pretender, I'm happy to be watching it as well. It always seemed like a fun series, but I think Netflix kept it from me with their dumb release schedules. It's refreshing to watch anime not set in Japan and I love watching the scams unfold, so I'm hoping to have a good time with it.

Then we're watching Kamichu! I like the older style and setting, the gods seem cool, but the protagonist has been a little meh. Others in the anime club said that all the anime we're watching now can be divided into tragedies and dense romances, and I hate dense romances (at least with straight characters) so I'm worried I'll have a bad time with this show. So far I'm pleased that her romantic interest doesn't show her any interest at all, because I'm dead inside I like stories about unrequited feelings (although I'm sure he'll come to like her eventually) and it prevents this from being a "dense romance" in the sense that the characters clearly like each other but are unable to progress their relationship, which is very frustrating most of the time. I'm coming in with some petty prejudices, and I'm hoping to get something more out of this, since I will be forced to watch it anyway.

Back to something exciting and tragic, we're also watching Bokurano, which I've also been wanting to watch for years. I only know that it's a mecha anime where all the kids will die, and that it's apparently one of the most tragic anime ever made. It's a little annoying to be watching it with company, since others keep making comments about that, but the first two episodes had me hooked. I'm super interested in seeing where this will be going, and as an aside, I'm a huge fan of both the opening and the ending. As soon as I left the meeting I had to open up youtube, tap the search bar, and then close my eyes as I typed in "bokurano full op/ed" without a single glance at some unwanted suggestion of "x death" or whatever twist might be coming up.

Lastly, we're watching Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! I've seen the first episode before, and almost left without watching it again, but my fomo and uncertain personality made me stay, and I'm glad I did, because this show is actually quite funny. It helps that the two mains have a close relationship already, and that they're both oblivious to some social cues/norms, so it's not just about them two awkwardly blushing and stuttering together, but them being oddballs in general with good chemistry together. It keeps the denseness less frustrating and more fun. I'm not sure if it'll continue to be funny for 12 more episodes (there are shows that manage that, like GSNK), but so far I don't hate it!

Once we finish the shorter shows, we'll start watching Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road and Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo. I've seen Shoukei Shoujo before, and I liked it okay, although the anime suffers from only scratching the surface of who the characters are. At least I'm looking forward to seeing some of the twists again, because they were really cool! I have no idea what to expect with Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo. I'm hoping for it to be a forgotten gem, but we'll see. I'll keep you updated whenever I have something to update you with!

Three ships:

Hori x Kashima from GSNK because they are everything to me.

Zoya x Nikolai from the Grishaverse books, I’ve been into them lately. I’d hope that season two of Shadow and Bone does them justice, but that depends on how much the show wants to deviate from the books.

Raeda from TOH because I find myself enjoying relationships between people over 35 more these days. I like it when they have history.

First ship: If you want to be reaaally technical about it, the first time I remember shipping anything was when I read one of those ghost-written short chapter book series for kids (The Tiara Club, Silver Towers).

After learning what ships were, I would casually ship the popular pairings in any book fandom I was a part of. I think my first real ship was Masami from Legend of Korra. I was, and still am, a sucker for rich girl x poor boy. (Also, I thought they were both hot.) I slowly converted into a Korrasami fan though. Even as an eleven year old who barely knew about gay people, I thought their development was good.

Last song: Hits Different by Taylor Swift. (should've been on the standard!)

Last movie: Fantastic Mr. Fox. I've been watching Wes Anderson films lately, and was inspired by that tumblr post that was going around recently.

Currently reading: Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir and Salt Magic by Hope Larson.

Currently watching: I've recently started watching Buffy, even with my apprehensions regarding Joss Whedon projects, I feel like it's the kind of thing I'd enjoy.

I'm not sure if you answered this before but did you have a favourite holy trinity ship dynamic in GSNK? I personally was a huge fan of Seo/Waka with how chaotic they could be with the misunderstandings

I love and cherish each of them so much. I love the way literally every single one of them said “I think I will take all these classic elements of media and incorrectly apply them to my life.” But, as I have been diagnosed with Theatre Kid On Main, I have to say Kashima and Hori. I’m especially inspired by Kashima; her whole character reads like a thought experiment of “what if effortlessly athletic and popular girl, but with consequences? what if she can’t remember her girlfriends’ names and gets called out for skipping class? what if everyone in the school was wrapped around her finger but all she wanted was senpai to notice her” ugh season 2 when

Regarding that headcanon of Kashima being Ryuuichi's cousin, I could see how it would happen. Hori wants to do a play for kids and needs a test audience, so Kashima asks her cousin to bring the daycare over and chaos ensues. Nozaki would probably go hoping for story ideas but then have regrets when the kids steal his drawing supplies while Kotaru be comforting the nervous Mikorin hiding in the corner.

I love this headcanon!! Dying @ the kids roaming through Nozaki’s bag and Kotarou keeping Mikorin company. Hori throwing a play for the kids is adorable ;;

Forreal though I’ve been thinking about this crossover a lot (I binged through the Gakuen Babysitters manga the past weekish) and have a lot of headcanons about it lolol, here’s a couple

- Ryuuichi and Kotarou call their cousin Yuu-san and Yuu-nee-cha (sometimes shortened to Yuu-cha) respectively dsjfhsjkdhfj

- I also think Kazuma would match Mikorin nicely, they’d understand each other’s meek personalities too well and would sit in the corner together quietly reading books or w/e, they’ll let Kotarou join but any more and Mikorin panics

- Taka is a tad grateful that Kamitani’s smacks could be worse after the poor kids witness Hori sending Kashima a flying kick

- the kids overhear Sakura using the “Mikorin” nickname and now they won’t stop calling poor Mikorin that

- Kashima is famous even among other schools’ drama clubs so Kirin’s mum is eager to meet her and the drama club; she also throws a long wig on Ryuuichi and nonchalantly comments he does this all the time and suddenly Hori 2.0 ensues for Kashima

- HoriKashi are Mamizuka Kousuke fans (as fellow actors) and go berserk when they meet him and Kousuke cowers in the corner until Ryuuichi calms him down

- Nozaki throws himself at Saikawa the moment they meet and keeps making him pose and asking him questions for “butler research”; Saikawa complies, even when Ryuuichi tells him not to and the GSNK gang restrains Nozaki

HOW INTERESTING THAT YOU SHOULD COME TO ME NOW, JUST AFTER I FINISHED ATTEMPTING TO BRIBE A TWITTER MUTUAL WITH A PHYSICAL CAKE SO THAT SHE WOULD WATCH AN ANIME I LOVE. i am always happy to share anime recs. 

ping pong: the animation (dir. masaaki yuasa): effusive yutaka “peco” hoshino and reserved makoto “smile” tsukimoto have been best friends since day one, and both of them love to play ping pong. peco, a child prodigy at the sport, loves it with all of his soul, and is so confident in his own talent that he’s become arrogant; while smile, in spite of his natural talent, does not take ping pong seriously, seeing it as nothing more than a way to pass the time. things are shaken up for the boys by the arrival of wenge “china” kong, a chinese player sent to redeem himself in japan after being kicked off the national team, who skunks peco in their first match, sending him spiraling into crisis; meanwhile, smile catches the interest of the school’s coach, a former star player, who is determined to make sure smile does not waste his talent. also joining the cast are manabu “akuma” sakuma, peco’s belligerent rival since childhood, and ryuichi “dragon” kazama, vanguard of the elite ping pong team at kaio academy. when all is said and done, will smile and peco’s friendship—and the love of ping pong that bonds them—remain? i urge everyone to watch this anime; it is perhaps the best i’ve ever seen. a work of art, of joy, of sadness and failure and triumph—a tribute to being alive, and to what it means to love something so much you feel like there’s no point in being alive if you can’t do it. and the animation, voice acting, and score are outstanding! 11 episodes.

the tatami galaxy (dir. masaaki yuasa): an unnamed college student is perpetually dissatisfied with his life, bemoaning the fact that he can never seem to grasp that “rose-colored campus life” he was certain he would have upon attending college in kyoto. just about the only thing he has in his corner is his mischievous frenemy, ozu, who drags him into scheme after scheme that only seem to make his situation worse; and a fellow student, akashi, who the protagonist has feelings for, but can never quite seem to spit it out. after a bad break-up sends him over the edge into total cynicism, he starts to wonder if his college years would have been spent differently (i.e., better) if he had chosen to join a different club on his first day. unbeknownst to him, the desire to go back and do it over again does send him back in time—each episode is an alternate timeline based on which club he joined. no matter how things change, though, he always seems to keep running into ozu, to just miss akashi, and to get involved with a man calling himself higuchi, who claims to be a god of matrimony; a bone-headed popular senior named jougasaki; and a beautiful but intense dental hygienist named hanuki. in the protagonist’s quest for the perfect college life, however, will he miss what’s right in front of him? i really love yuasa as you can probably tell and this, just like ping pong, is beautifully animated, great fun, and unexpectedly moving. a testament to the little things, to seeing the beauty and wonder in what we have. and the opening and ending are GOD TIER. 11 episodes.

gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun (dir. mitsue yamazaki): if you somehow haven’t watched this yet, please love yourself and do it. a romantic comedy series that follows 16-year-old chiyo sakura’s attempts to woo her crush, umetarou nozaki, gsnk, contrary to the shoujo form, actually begins with her confessing to him—but he misunderstands and gives her... his autograph?! yes, it turns out nozaki moonlights as a hugely successful shoujo romance mangaka, and he’s been needing an assistant, and sakura is in the art club... convenient! this show has it all—uproarious humor, masterful comedic timing, incredibly charming characters, and just the right dose of heartfelt romance to warm any heart. other cast members include mikoto mikoshiba, nozaki’s best friend, whose flirtatious antics constantly cause him to nearly die of embarrassment; yuzuki seo, chiyo’s best friend, a brash and oblivious jock with a beautiful singing voice; hirotaka wakamatsu, a mild-mannered basketball player constantly aggrieved by seo’s bullying; yuu kashima, star of the drama club and dashing prince of the school; and masayuki hori, drama club president and kashima’s ever-frustrated director. love is in the air not just for sakura, but for a few others, as well—it’s going to be an interesting year! 12 episodes.

kids on the slope (dir. shinchiro watanabe): kaoru nishimi is a shy and depressed honor student, classically trained to play the piano, who has spent his entire life moving from town to town due to the nature of his father’s job. at the beginning of the summer of 1966, he is sent to a small coastal town in kyushu to live with relatives, and is prepared for another year of loneliness until his world is turned on its axis when he meets delinquent sentaro kawabuchi. the two develop a strange and unlikely friendship, and kaoru soon discovers that sentaro, or sen, is an avid fan of jazz, then an emergent form of music in japan, and plays the drums in the basement of a record store owned by the family of his childhood friend, ritsuko mukae, with whom kaoru immediately falls in love. when ritsuko says that she would love to hear kaoru and sen play together, kaoru begins to acquaint himself with jazz, too, and finds that it holds more magic than he expected. part classic coming-of-age drama, part love letter to the jazz genre, this series was, fun fact, directed by the man behind cowboy bebop and samurai champloo—so, like, if that isn’t a testament to its quality, i don’t know what is. it will make you cry, though. just warning you. 

silver spoon (dir. tomohiko ito): desperate to escape the pressures of his home life, beleaguered honor student yuugo hachiken foresakes his chances of attending an elite tokyo high school and applies to ezonoo agricultural school in hokkaido. at first holding himself a rung above his peers, due to his perception of them as bumpkins who have never had to work hard academically due to their security as farmers, hachiken quickly learns that there’s a lot he doesn’t know, and he’ll have to work hard if he wants to keep up with his peers. though initially withdrawn, hachiken comes to make many new friends, and soon begins to take his studies seriously, earnestly trying to learn all he can about the world of agriculture and how it affects the lives of his friends. this series is easily something i’d call “the feel-good story of the decade,” but it also has many profound and emotional moments, and a hugely relatable protagonist in hachiken. it’s definitely a comedy, but at its heart, it’s one of those special series that kind of takes your hand and smiles at you and says, “yeah. i get it. i know how you feel. but it’s all right. life’s pretty fun, even if you don’t notice.”

hyouka (dir. yasehiro takemoto): to this day i’m still a bit stunned that kyoto animation managed to come out with something as good as hyouka, since it’s so different from their other works, but the truth is there. it’s simple, with a cast of only four characters and few recurring side ones; a subdued score using mostly public domain classical pieces, a quiet high school as the backdrop, a close and intimate portrait of the four kids it brings together. the PV actually does a fine job of introducing the characters—apathetic houtarou, inquisitive eru, cheerful satoshi, and caustic mayaka—so i won’t go into that too much. essentially, houtarou is urged by his sister to sign up for the classics club after no one else does, since it will be disbanded if it does not have at least one member. much to his surprise, someone else already has signed up by the time he does—a curious girl named eru with an insatiable appetite for mysteries. though houtarou lives by a philosophy of what he calls “energy conservation,” eru has a power over him (read: he has a big, beautiful crush on her) that compels him to go along with her antics, and his penetrating intellect doesn’t help much. satoshi, houtarou’s best friend, and mayaka, a childhood... acquaintance of houtarou’s, also join the club, and hyouka chronicles all of the things that happen to them over the course of their school year. when asked about the meaning behind the title (”hyouka” means “frozen dessert”), the author of the novels said, “the colour of youth is like ice cream. its many flavours are like the spectrum of a rainbow, but no matter how it tastes, what doesn’t change is its richness and flavour. another distinguishing feature of ice cream is the short time one has to eat it, and how we must take care to avoid polluting it. it’s just like how youth is full of numerous possibilities, but its fragile and limited energy is easily challenged by the outside world.” i think that probably speaks for itself in alluding to the bittersweet tone of the series. it really is one of my favorites.

and, because my fingers are getting tired: yu yu hakusho is my favorite shounen series by a mile and one of the few for which i highly recommend the dub—it’s long though, 100+ episodes, but worth every minute. i’ll be glad to go into why yyh specifically is the best in a separate post if anyone is interested bc hoo boy. uchouten kazoku season 1 is great and one of my favorites but season 2 was kind of eh to me. if you like action and tragic romance, kyoukai no kanata is my second-fave kyoani series after hyouka, though it does have some fanservicey bits and fetishy humor that kind of date it a little bit. and if you haven’t started boku no hero academia yet—PLEASE GET ON THAT; IT’S SO MUCH FUN! 

and, of course, the anime of my heart and soul: lovely complex, a romcom about a tall girl and a short boy, and their arduous, hilarious, heart-melting journey from vitriolic best buds to lovers. hits all the right notes. no other shoujo compares. it’s a series that anyone and everyone can AND WILL enjoy.

Spring 2017 Watchlist (New-This-Season Edition) First Taste

I’m so happy the shitty winter season (in terms of both the anime season and actual season) is finally over and spring is upon us once more. Here are a few new shows this season I’ve watched the first episodes of; some I’ll keep going, some I’m dropping immediately because why do these even exist please why (please don’t take these “reviews” too seriously LOL; I just enjoy rambling about new shows):

Kado: The Right Answer | Seikaisuru Kado

If you’re into sci-fi and handsome government bureaucrats negotiating with equally handsome alien (???) whose spaceship (I think it’s a spaceship?) is shaped like a giant fractal cube, Seikaisu Kado is looking to be very promising. The 3D animation puts me off at first, but I soon didn’t care for it as the story becomes more fascinating. Just what does this white-haired alien want with Japan and can Shindou, the protagonist ace-negotiator, handle this? And what about his cute assistant Hanamori voiced by the even cuter Saito Soma? Will we see him again soon? The first episode and prequel just came out; I personally recommend watching ep.1 first before watching ep. 0.

Alice & Zouroku | Alice to Zouroku

I only started watching it because the bf was excited about it, so I thought I’d give it a try since the art style looks cute. And boy oh boy it’s definitely different than what I was expecting. The show opens with a young girl named Sana who escapes from a research facility, which is later revealed to be a place for kids with special abilities (Sana can materialize things she imagines). Weakened and lost, she encounters an old man named Zouroku, who takes her into his home after an incident that involved the police. It’s a weird combination of fluff and fantasy/mystery that has heartwarming moments and decent fight scenes. Sana’s goal is to destroy the facility to rescue the other kids stuck in there, so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

As the Moon, so Beautiful | Tsuki ga Kirei  

If you’re looking for slow-burn junior high school romance with very gorgeous art where the two leads are shy as heck, then Tsuki ga Kirei might be a show for you. Personally, I found the pacing a bit slow, and I dunno, maybe it’s because I’m in my late 20′s and these kids are like 14? I can’t really relate much to them, especially in the romance department. From what I can see so far, I think this show is more about the characters than the plot, so if you’re into character-driven romance, you can give it a try.

Renai Boukun | Love Tyrant

Think Death Note... but Kiss Note, so instead of dying when your name’s written in the notebook, the people whose names are written together will kiss kiss, fall in love. That’s it; that’s the premise. It’s essentially a harem anime with half-assed comedy, so don’t ask me why I even tried watching the first episode; it was 20 minutes of my life wasted.

Hinako Note

A country girl, who’s shy as heck and will freeze up and become a scarecrow (metaphorically, I guess?) when she’s under stress, attends a high school in Tokyo because she wants to join the drama club. She lives in a boarding house above a secondhand bookstore, where she meets a girl who... eats books??? Not sure if that part is important or it’s just a one-time gag. Essentially: cute girls doing cute things.

Kabukibu!

So I know this show is about kabuki, but please don’t expect it to be anything like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu because it definitely is nothing like the latter. A high-school kabuki enthusiast wants to start a kabuki club in his school, but to do so, he needs to find at least five members. Cue: megane-kun best friend, pretty boy from the drama club who’s actually a pretty girl (think GSNK’s Kashima), terrible vocalist who got kicked out of his own band (rock band AU Minami-kun?), pretty boy dancer who’s now a delinquent???, and an actual kabuki actor who takes his art way too seriously. Also featuring character designs by CLAMP. So... sports anime formula but with kabuki, basically. Yeah.

Eromanga Sensei

All I can say of this right now is that I was expecting lots of fan service and cringe-worthy moments, but it wasn’t actually that bad. Protag boy is a light novel writer; his books are illustrated by someone named Eromanga, whom he’s never met before. Turns out the illustrator is his own little sister, who’s become a shut-in since their parents’ death a few years ago. According to the summary, there’ll also be a shoujo mangaka who’ll become their rival. So... I dunno, I might keep watching if I have time.

The Royal Tutor | Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

Four spoiled German princes, one royal tutor (who’s short and the short jokes never end). It looks like a BL otome... but according to MAL it’s just a comedy. So. Featuring: long-suffering tutor, youngest prince who’s a playa (seiyuu Aoi Shouta also plays this role in a stage adaptation — yes there’s a stage production of this already), 4th prince who hates studying, third prince who’s basically prince!Kyoya of Ouran, and second prince who can’t seem to form words and looks like he’s refraining from punching a wall at all times. You bet I’ll be watching this trash. 

I’ll make a separate post for sequels (because there are so many good shows coming out with sequels this season), but for now, let me know what you guys are watching!

He started the school’s first anime club and takes it SO SERIOUSLY like he makes meeting agendas and organizes events.
