The "A" in "Normal" by Yesitstyles - i originally read this fic for the asexuality aspect of it and it was only the second stylinshaw fic i’ve ever read and omg i love it so much. it’s such a great fic for the ace and aro chat and discussion and representation, but also the STYLINSHAW ASPECT IS JUST SO GREAT like i cannot even... it’s just so great. i love it very much a lot.

You're a Rabbit, Louis series by @magicalrocketships / sunsetmog - oh my worddddd listen. sunsetmog is amazing with every single one of their fics, but this one is one i think of often. it’s so crack fic-y but also is so pure? lol maybe pure is the wrong word with the second fic too, but it’s just so great and the dynamic is brilliantly written. it’s amazing and incredible and i love it very much a lot.

Perfect Sky by twoshipsdrifting - i was whining to @londonfoginacup one day about how i needed more stylinshaw in my life and she was like “have you read the really sad sub pair fic?” i had NOT and was defo up for some angst, so i said send it my way. harry and louis are a sub pair and nick is their dom and so many mistakes are made and misunderstandings and it is so sad but the hurt/comfort is glorious and wonderful. so if you are up for hurting a little bit, this is a fab read lol

Orion's Belt by @londonfoginacup / LadyLondonderry - a/b/o stylinshaw!!! soulmates!!! harry learning he has VERY WELL KNOWN older soulmates! alpha louis, beta nick, omega harry. oh gosh oh gosh this fic is legit one of my favorite of all of emmu’s fics, and that’s saying a lot because i love her fics. the established tomlinshaw, trying to find the right fit for harry with them, insecurity on all of their parts about themselves??? I LOVE IT SO MUCH OKAY

old haunts are for forgotten ghosts by @fortymaliks / fortymaliks - this was actually the very first stylinshaw fic i ever read lol i still didn’t completely understand ao3 and tags and had no idea what i was getting into but it was WONDERFUL. amnesia! at the time it was also a future fic? somewhat canon compliant (turned out to be far more canon compliant than we ever could have known lol 2016 meaning the band was on hiatus and nick still doing the breakfast show? wild!), but louis wakes up and doesn’t remember nick becoming a part of their relationship and OHHHH THE ANGST THE PAIN!!! i love the way they work through it all. so wonderful.

Trinity's Fate by anonymous - i feel fairly certain when i first read this fic it wasn’t on anonymous, but that’s okay lol i hope the author knows how much i adore the fic anyway. this one is another soulmates fic! but it’s got another twist to it other than just polyamory haha it’s dom/sub soulmates. at 16 you learn if you’re a dom or a sub and then at 18 you learn who your soulmate is. louis is a sub and has been dreading learning who his dom is only to learn he has two, and they’re the fairly well known radio 1 djs harry and nick. EEEEEEE i love the world building and it’s just such a fascinating story altogether. so so so amazing.

so these are my fav fics i’ve read, but hopefully you don’t mind me also reccing the two stylinshaw fics i’ve written (so far... another is coming with the omega harry exchange hehe):

The Only Thing That Keeps Me Grounded - this is one of my favorite fics i’ve ever written ever. established tomlinshaw, nanny harry meets them and falls for both over time. it’s a bit of a sexuality crisis and dealing with that as well as navigating everything, and i love it so very much a lot. i hope you give it a try and like it too.

Loving You's the Antidote - this one i wrote for the @finelineficfest and is based off of golden! established gryles, omega harry has a medical condition that is dangerous and needs to have regular touch from an alpha, which is unfortunate since his mate is a beta. enter alpha louis. :D i loved writing this fic  too, the characters are all so dear to me hehe i hope you like them too!

2019 Fandom Year Ahead

After writing out my reflections on 2018 I thought I would share some of my fandom goals and things I have going on in 2019. 

I’m going to do a fic related recap/meme of 2018 but I’m waiting for Erised reveals then I’ll get that up too. In the meantime, here’s some of the stuff I have going on in 2019 and I hope you’ll join in some of the fun :D

I’m also upping my participation over on Dreamwidth where you can find me as Writcraft, so if we don’t have mutual access or whatever then do come and say hello and I’ll subscribe back and grant access to my own journal if I recognise your username.

Moderating: Harry Potter

I’m excited about the fests I’m moderating this year and I hope we get plenty of sign ups and people enjoy them. The upcoming fests are below.

Harry Potter Kinkfest (@hpkinkfest): I can’t quite believe Kinkfest has been running for a decade, and I’m super excited to see what people come up with this year. The fest is designed to explore any and all kinks and hopefully be a safe space for creators who fancy working with kinks you see around less frequently, as well as creators who want to write those well-loved kinks and celebrate all the different ways there are to make our favourite characters get their kink on. Prompting is well underway and head over to the fest tumblr to find out how you can leave your prompts if you haven’t already done so.

My Bloody Valentine: An anti-Valentine’s mini-fest exploring the darker side of love, romance, sex, obsession and relationships. This will be a self-prompting, self-posting fest running from 10 - 16 February. More details will go up at @hpdarkarts in mid-Jan but you can start creating at any point if you’re interested. I already know we have a couple of brilliant entries ready to go, and I’m excited to see what people come up with.

Wand In A Knot: The Harry Potter 24 hour smut tag challenge. This is such a fun fest, inspired by similar fests in Teen Wolf, Sherlock and Supernatural fandom. The fest begins with a mod tag, tagging the first participant with a short prompt and then go, go, go, you have 24 hours to produce and post your fanwork, choosing your own character/ship to fill the prompt. You get your fanwork up, then tag the next participant with a short prompt and they then have 24 hours to create their contribution. It’s super fun to be part of, and we hope sign ups go swimmingly. There is a 30 participant cap and the tagging will happen on a dedicated fest Discord. Follow @wand-in-a-knot for details which will go up around March. The fest starts in May.

Harry Potter Horror Fest: The annual HP Horror Fest, an anonymous prompt based fest, will be back this year only this time it will run in September. Keep an eye on @hpdarkarts for details.

Moderating: Radio One RPF/One Direction

Grimmy Appreciation Fest (@grimmyappreciation): For those interested in 1D/Radio One RPF fandom, this annual fest dedicated to fanworks focused on Nick will be running again in 2019. More details will go up in the summer.

Gryles Exchange (@grylesexchange): I’m delighted to be part of a terrific mod team for this year’s Nick/Harry exchange which will open for sign ups at the end of January. Keep an eye on the blog for more details.

Writing

I’ve got a bunch of projects I’m super excited about this year. I’m going to finish off my Festive 500s, probably posting a bunch in a mad rush, then I’m focusing on all the new things. I’m hoping to be a regular participant in the @hpfemslash-minifest when a monthly theme grabs my interest, and I’ll be writing for Daily Deviant on a monthly basis again this year, starting this month. There are a few fests I’ve got my eye on, although I’m trying to limit fest participation. I’ll probably have a little something in the fests listed above as I want to write at least two pieces of dark/horror fic this year, I’m hoping to do the Snarry-a-Thon at Snape Potter, and after that, we’ll see! I’m sure I will do one of the Drarry fests, the question is which one??? It will likely depend on timing and other commitments.

HARRY POTTER

Play Me Like A Love Song - I am working on a novel length Minerva McGonagall/Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank story. They make a fleeting appearance in my Drarry fic, Little Compton Street, and this is their story set within that 'verse. It charts them meeting in the 50s, how they got together and looks at the communities they found on Little Compton Street and their work with those communities during the AIDS pandemic in the 80s.

Novel Length Snarry - I've been really enjoying indulging in writing longer stories and I haven't really written a novel length Snarry. I really want to spend some time on this ship this year in general. Expect much more Snarry from me this year and feel free to block the tag if it’s not your thing.

Losing His Religion Series - I swear the sequel to my Drarry fic Bedroom Hymns isn’t abandoned. It’s on the list of projects to complete this year and I’ll be glad to share the second instalment with you!

Festive 500s - God, I wish I had called these ‘suitable for any time of the year’ 500s :D - nearly finished with them and with 10 remaining chapters to post, I hope the rest will be up by the end of the weekend.

ONE DIRECTION / RADIO ONE RPF

Rebel Girl - I am super excited about this story, my first genderswap fic in this fandom, pairing Nick Grimshaw and Louis Tomlinson. This story will be a queer coming of age story focusing on Manchester's music scene, LGBT communities and self-discovery. On her first visit to Manchester’s Canal Street, Louis becomes captivated by flighty, infuriating DJ Nick who offers Louis the no-strings sex she thought she wanted. As Louis and Nick grow closer, pretending not to care becomes increasingly difficult.

London Rain - My Tomlinshaw hook-up app fic that I still haven't finished. Hoping to get this up at some point this year.

Someday You Will Find Me - Another 2018 WIP I haven't finished, in which non-famous Nick and Louis fight over the last copy of Oasis album What's The Story (Morning Glory) in an L.A. record store, and it leads them on a forty-eight hour music binge at Louis' posh house in the Hollywood Hills. A kind of liminal spaces story, structured around music from Northern England.

Thirteen - The Harry Styles/Nick Grimshaw/Louis Tomlinson Doctor Who AU with Nick as the Thirteenth Doctor that I've had in my WIPs for ages. Maybe this will be the year? Who knows. 

Gryles Kink Fic - My Gryles muse has fucked off, but I’m hopeful it will return. Maybe? Anyway, it’s on the list.

Little Lion Man Sequel. Edited this in because I forgot to include it. But yes, this is happening. It won’t be a multi-chaptered WIP and definitely won’t be as long as the original, but it wraps up some of the things I set in motion towards he end of LLM. Yay!

casually hi-jacking this little questionnaire from the lovely and talented @helloamhere :) i’m hoping it’ll provide some motivation to write a couple more words today.

wip in question: vampire au ft. awkward encounters of the third kind (harry/louis with a good heaping of gryles & hitch friendship)

1. what’s your fav thing about writing your current wip?

its goofiness and humanity. it started out as a crack prompt fill (hello vampire au) and suddenly ran away from me and became more about found families. i usually get straight to the point in my fics and this time i’ve been paying more attention to the friendships that are nestled inside the story, not just the romantic endgame. those are my favorite types of fics and i’m so happy that i’m trying my hand at it. i’m also loving giving my characters their film preferences (which is a surefire way to figure out how someone ticks). vampire!harry loves a good pride & prejudice (2005) quote and louis is a b-horror movie aficionado.

2. have you got a name yet? what’s your process for finding one?

the name remains elusive but i’ve been so tempted to use lyrics from the criminally underrated broadway showtune, hold me, batboy. it’s just absurd enough to fit with the fic’s premise but also has a surprisingly deeper emotion cutting through it. titles come from everywhere and i’m a sucker for ones that come from poetry (looking at my last 1d fic, under me, you). i tend to finish a fic first before delving into the sometimes horrendously long process of figuring out a title, but sometimes there’s those fics that are borne from a certain lyric or happy accident of words.

3. is there a scene you’re stuck on?

y e s. i hate writing first-meetings and while i finally have these two bozos running into each other after 9150 words, i loathe to force my way through the song-and-dance of name exchanges, etc. i’m doing my best to subvert all the usual tropes that come along with meet-cutes/uglies but ugh.

4. is there a scene you can’t wait to write?

love a good vampire reveal and i’m excited to finally tackle it myself!

5. what’s your process when you get stuck?

probably the worst kind: i stop writing altogether. that could be for days or months, but i don’t ever try to force the words. i’ll usually come back and read the fic from the beginning, make some edits, and by the time i get to where i left off i’m inspired again to continue.

The first two Drarry fics are the second and third parts to Bedroom Hymns. 

The ‘first time’ Drarry is pretty self-explanatory.

The Drapery (Snape/Harry/Draco) is a project I’m planning to work on for 2019 which is non-fest related and hopefully a collab with an artist. 

The Jeddy and the first Snarry are pretty much what they say on the tin. 

The second Snarry is a long project I’ve been working on which brings LGBT politics into the wizarding world and explores themes of homophobia/internalised homophobia through the lens of a cross-generational relationship, i.e. how ones experience might differ based on the time they were born.

Why the Caged Bird Sings is a veela Snape fic I wrote ages ago (where it’s his voice that holds the veela allure as opposed to his looks, kind of like a siren thing) that I am considering re-working and putting up on AO3. 

The Wolfstar road trip fic is what I was originally working on for Wolfstar Big Bang, about Sirius and Remus on a road trip in 1979, discovering America’s LGBT spaces, coming of age, coming out and so on. I sadly didn’t finish it but it’s not abandoned.

SO MANY WIPS. God, I need to finish something. 

The 50 Reasons ones are from my Tomlinshaw 50 Reasons to Have Sex series which currently only has three reasons, ha ha. Although I have more prompts than this, these are the ones that are actually WIPs that have some significant progress. Mission for 2019 is to get these done, even though there’s no huge rush as each fic within the series is a standalone.

The Hook-Up App fic is the one where Nick and Louis start talking via a hook-up app and things progress from there. It’s nearly finished and I’m excited about posting that. 

Champagne Supernova is a non-famous LA AU where Louis is rich, bored and missing home, and Nick is on his holidays. They meet in a record store and argue over who gets to buy the last copy of Oasis’s What’s the Story. The only solution is for Nick to come back to Louis’s to listen to it. WHAT ON EARTH COULD HAPPEN NEXT? It’s really anyone’s guess ;-)

Tonight You’re Perfect is an angsty, Nick is scared of commitment kind of thing. I wanted the focus of this to be Nick’s angsting rather than Louis’s.

God’s Own Country is a Tomlinshaw loosely inspired by the film. 

The Hogwarts Series is the follow up to Little Lion Man. So much to explore in this next installment! I’m really excited about getting into this next year.

Thirteen. MY DOCTOR WHO AU. With Nick as the thirteenth doctor, Louis as the companion and Harry as a Captain Jack sort of figure. I picked that up again recently, but it’s going to be looooong so I have no idea when it will get finished and I don’t want to start posting another WIP until the majority of it is written so I can post chapters consistently instead of with large swathes of time between them, as it makes me really anxious. I now have @shiftylinguini and @candybarrnerd cheering me on with it though and have started my Doctor Who rewatch so hopefully that will help! 

I think the others are pretty self-explanatory, LOL. I basically want to write a loooooong, super kinky Gryles. It’s in progress ;-)

21. most memorable comment/review

OMG, so i got one just recently from someone who said they made an account just to comment on something I wrote and that was incredible!! That has to be definitely the best and most memorable. 

I think as well, any comment I get while anonymous, from someone who I know has read my stuff before, saying “can’t wait to find out who you are and read more of your stuff!”. I feel SO SNEAKY and amazing when that happens, like I get to burst out from behind a curtain or from inside a huge cake in a huge reveal. @tackytigerfic left one like that this year and I felt VERY amazing when I got it. 

Also, any comment when I am anonymous and someone is like “I think I know who this is” and then when there are reveals, they are like I KNEW IT WAS YOU!! I enjoy this a lot LMAO, I’m like, you got me!!

I was tagged by the lovely @hazzabeeforlou ... can I just say, I’m always super flattered when I get included in fic things. Because I really tend to beat myself up for not producing as much as others in this fandom. Even if I haven’t posted a fic since August, I’m a writer! It’s an everlasting struggle. x_x

1. I Think I Might (Just Ask Me To)/(working title: The Many Adventures of Mr. R. B. Bear): a Hospitality Industry AU in which Harry is the son of a hotel mogul billionaire and is exiled to a lesser property to learn the ropes of hotel operations. Louis is a hotel guest, there for a month long work project. Louis’ niece gives him rbb before he heads overseas to keep him company. Louis sends her pictures of RBB on different “adventures.” Naturally, Harry wants in on the action and thus begins a whirlwind strangers with benefits thing. I’ve literally been working on this off and on since 2015, but it’s seriously my baby. Inspired by Perfect and Harry’s quote about the song: “It’s more like ‘I’m not perfect. I really like you and if you wanna have fun, this could be great’ type thing.”

2. the vampire au: Louis is a vampire. Harry isn’t, until he is. Harry gets badly attacked and Louis is forced to turn him. Only, that’s the worst crime imaginable for his coven and the punishment for Louis is exile for 500 years. The punishment for Harry is...memory wiping. AMNESIA! ANGST! Evil S*mon C*well as the coven leader! Gryles friendship! 

3. christmas in holmes chapel fic: obligatory christmas fluff. Harry is a baker, a little bit lost from prior heartbreak and life not going how he planned it. Louis is close friends with Gemma (both work in London). Louis fails to get his family christmas hols vacation approved, so he’s stuck alone at Christmas (and his birthday!). Gemma invites him back to Holmes Chapel for the holidays and he agrees because it’s better than being alone and hello, Gemma, your brother is EXTREMELY PRETTY.

4. Alien/Student Exchange Program AU: Listen. This fic exists only in my mind, but maybe if I speak it into existence, I’ll finally write it? Harry is a sweet gentle extraterrestrial and gets matched with a couple in Tokyo and BELL THE SHIBA INU. Cuteness ensues. Louis is an art student on a semester abroad?? There’s karaoke and McDonalds and dogs and fish out of water tropes galore.

5. Untitled Gryles fic: ooooh boy. Idk what happened to this one. I started so strong and then abandoned it. But I do want to do something with it. Kinda canon-adjacent-ish? The biggest factor of this is that it is past H/L. It’s Nick/Harry friends with benefits, friends to lovers, miscommunication, pining, ANGSSST, idiots in love. Basically, Nick will take anything he can get from Harry even if it breaks his heart in the process.  

6. the ongoing Harry Styles/Shawn Mendes thing: @thingsicant-even and I are demons and I have promised her some kind of output for this ship. Honestly. I can’t get it out of my mind. There is zero audience for it outside of the two of us and I kind of don’t care? I want to write an exploration of Shawn coming to terms with his sexuality and grappling with his long-standing obsession with popstar Harry Styles. I want Teddy being a supportive and teasing bff for Shawn. I want Niall to be... cautiously optimistic about his two friends getting involved. I want Harry being soft and feminine and Shawn just eating it all up. I have a hundred shoot off headcanons for Sharry, it’s ridiculous (including but not limited to: a highschool au! a kink heavy harry/louis/shawn thing!) I’m a mess about Shawn Mendes welcome to my hell.

I’m rereading I Could Take the Back Road atm (gryles), the last new one was WIP (Edge of Love - I really like it already), and last zarry fic was one from the exchange (Go Back An Tell ‘Em - it was lovely).
