YEAH, how good the pacing is in the War Games and the Invasion blows me away. (War Games is my fave DW story) I feel like the pacing in the Pertwee era was generally inconsistent? Like as much as I *love* the Silurians the pacing is UGH
I really can't believe how well The Invasion and The War Games zip by. Despite them going being so long, I could watch them endlessly. Two of my very favorites.
And yeah, The Silurians did drag a fair bit. I suppose I'll figure more out on how I feel about the era's pacing as I get further into it. I wish there were more four-parters, though; Spearhead zipped by.

I’m tripping a bit because that promo image basically looks like a comic book cover I didn’t realize it was a real human at first glance
he's got the look and now I want to see everything he's appeared in to get a feel for him as an actor

grufainia replied to your post:That's definitely fair enough. I feel like the Doctor being an exile/rogue and them never knowing exactly where they end up are other elements too, but there's definitely just some common sense failure things. It's just when comparing it to Star Trek, they seem like very different beasts/circumstances? (sorry for moving to the ask-box, reply character limit cut me off)
That makes sense! Yeah, there’s definitely ethnocentricity, especially with something like the Aztecs. Classic Who’s ethics in general tend to shift around from era to era. (It’s pretty easy to tell when Verity Lambert left)
Yeah, I'm excited to see where the show will go next, because this is really interesting to me! I'm so glad I decided to watch this show from the beginning, omg.

grufainia replied to your post:Why is The Ambassadors of Death seven parts?...
That could be said of all the Season 7 7-parters, really (Tho Inferno is a bit better paced)
Inferno is far better paced, as are The War Games and The Invasion (and, looking further back, Marco Polo). I suppose I've been spoiled by the quality of the last couple excessively long serials that it's a let down to get something like Ambassadors.

Ah no that's ok, we don't really mind spoilers on most programmes and we'd see it on here at some point anyway :)

Mormon commune, are you worried that you do not completely fit in at your singles ward?
Don't worry just come join us in the crying ward where we can be united by crying activities such as reading emo scriptures, watching emotional films, and crying tears into jars while making various chutneys and we can also still sing apricots popping in the popcorn tree R U DOWN??

Oh yeah, definitely! All of my claims that the Doctor should've taken Starfleet courses are at least somewhat exaggerated, because Starfleet just plain wouldn't work in the Doctor Who universe.
I guess I'm thinking of it more in 60's culture terms and less in in-universe terms? Because from what I've seen of it so far, Old Who seems to be A LOT more ethnocentric than Star Trek. Which, of course, isn't to say that Star Trek isn't ethnocentric at all (because that would be a really big lie), but I guess it makes an effort to not be ethnocentric? And that "effort" sort of takes the form of the Prime Directive.
And it's really interesting to think that possibly, the Prime Directive exists in Star Trek as a response to other sci-fi series that existed at the time, such as Doctor Who. Because all of us modern viewers of Star Trek tend to kind of forget just how outside of its box Star Trek was at the time, and things that seem standard sci-fi to us now may not have been the standard at the time.
