Presenting the cast of my “most current” WIP: Air Jumper, a sci-fi (who am I kidding? let’s call it what it is: space opera) concerning Nim Sequanna, a young Jumper who puts everything her family ownson the line to compete in the sport she loves—the only way to return home nowis to win it all. Hurled into a world of cheating athletes and dirtypoliticians, Nim befriends a mutant outcast looking to save his people and adisgraced businessman searching for redemption as they race against saboteursand killers to claim the crown.

Nim Sequanna is the main protagonist, a youngAir Jumper (a sport kind of like space parkour), who has followed her mother’sfootsteps from the puddles of the sluice to the heights of the tor hills on herhome planet of Charybdis, where even the clouds are not untouchable. Nim is short,slim, fiery and as cocksure as she is naive. Certain she can achieve more, shemakes an ambitious gamble to join a team that is competing in theinterplanetary championship to win the Crown. Fame and fortune await her aheadwhile shame and the consequences of her gamble lie behind at home. At the end of the day, Nim is kindhearted andhonest to a fault (several of them, actually), but her own selfishness andpride along with her unintentional backwoods view of the universe don’t serveher well. She has a hesitant supporter in her father, Jurard, who allows her topursue her goals, but is afraid of losing her to the sport like he lost hiswife. And then there’s her little brother, Arcus, who is her charge ofresponsibility as well as her biggest fan. //“Ido not think anyone has the right to decide someone else’s worth.” //

Kio Mobrique is an Edseter, a branch ofhumanity that has survived on hardly livable worlds at the cost of biologicalmutation. His planet, the Ripple, is one of four terraformed planets in thesame reach of space as the UTC (United Treaty Confederation, a name that meansabsolutely nothing and will probably change), but not part of the treaty. Kiowas rescued at a young age from plague by a stranger’s kindness and has beenrecruited by the governing powers of the Edsetera to find an Air Jumper who willspeak on their behalf at the Victory ceremony of the Cup, with millions inattendance and an entire galaxy’s spotlight placed on their plight. Kio’s lungsare badly damaged from his close brush with death and he wears a specialrespirator mask to help him breathe as he traverses worlds and space. Kio is Puck’sassistant on the team and is fiercely loyal to him (though the question of ifPuck deserves this devotion is very much in the air). He becomes Nim’s frienddespite cultural constraints designed to keep those friendships from everforming. He’s wiry, enduring, and clever, but his small size and adaptation toa terraformed world on which he no longer lives have not made it easy for him. He’salso just a little too brave for his own good, and will pick fights he hasabsolutely zero chance of winning, resulting in lots of bruises anddisapproving looks from Puck. // “Somedays you find out that you can do all the wrong things for all the rightreasons.”//

Puck Ebrin is a formerly famous Air Jumpsponsor from the planet Lares whose team won the Cup the year the currentProctor of the UTC came to power. Puck’s wife and child died of plague when themedicine that should have been available to them was stolen—a crime Puck wasthen accused of committing. Because an interplanetary narcotics scandalconnected the theft of the medicine to Jumpers and cheating during the Cup, hewas forced to leave the sport and renounce all ties to the winning team. Puck disappearedinto obscurity, resurfacing only to sponsor the eleventh-hour team Nim joins. //“Don’tever say sorry for something you are proud of.”//

Annwyl Annod is a decorated Jumper and anavid follower of the sport in all its dirt and glory. She’s a streetwise girlfrom Lares, a planet known more for its stunning vistas and classy vacationhomes rather than its urban aptitude. Very eager to share her knowledge of AirJumping’s best-kept secrets—including some things others might be keen to leavein the past—Annwyl takes the younger Nim under her wing, despite the fact thatthey’re on opposing teams. Sharp-edged, Annwyl is the “cool kid” and knows how to flaunt her stuff. // “Theyjust don’t know what to do without me for long, poor dears. //

Proctor Falstaff is the official head of the UTCand arguably the most powerful man in the known universe. Falstaff was broughtinto power largely by the campaign of Puck Ebrin’s team when they won the UTCAir Jump crown. Since that time, Falstaff’s control over his reach of space hasstrengthened, wearing down the holds of pirates and other marauders scouringunsuspecting ships in the black. Falstaff is a large man with a sonorous voiceand is a favorite gentleman in the world of politics. His term as Proctorhowever, is coming to an end, pending reelection—the determining factor ofwhich may once again be the Air Jump crown. //“Tovictory, then my Jumpers. Be proud, be strong, and leap for the very stars.” //

SiraCuthuluis a champion of the Air Jumper world and Puck’s right hand when it comes to training the new generation of Jumpers. Sweet and smart, Sira believes a good meal can cure any ailment and that band-aids probably really do fix bullet wounds. Head of the encouragement department on the team. Sira was on the team that Puck took to the Crown years before and is the only one of that group who has remained close to all the other members - also the only who has shown loyalty to Puck of those who knew him at the time. //“That’sfine, tears are fine.” //

Drexel Spint is the reigning champion of the last Air Jump Crown, and every young Air Jumper’s idol. Charismatic, ambitious, and friendly, his is an easy face to view on the info casts whether its a sporting update or to address issues of politics and tragedies to the general public. He and Sira may or may not be a “thing” and this remains one of the most popular topics of gossip columns across the UTC planets. // “The Crown, the reward, all of this is yours for the taking now, so go: take it.” //

Boann is the leader of the Edseter, a formidable woman, solemn, and strong. She’s been protecting and guiding the outcasts on the terraformed worlds for two generations and it’s by her hand that their government even exists at all. It is Boann who recruits Kio to her cause: to expose the lies about the Edseter people, and to earn them a place within the protection of the UTC. // “A stranger’s kindness… there are few things more to be valued than that.” //
