Pardon, I forgot to specify one of the components that makes the trend really oddly specific: The aliens are distributing superpowers as part of a secret plot to eat the people they give superpowers to.
That seems like it should be a classic twist in some genre, probably Tokusatsu (though @tyrantisterror knows those a lot more than I do, and claims it isn't), and I don't know of anything before Psyren (2007-2010) that had the alien power-granter try to eat the heroes or the planet, at least in a 'final boss' sort of way rather than a 'your cursed sword burns your life when you draw it' sort of way.
Which is really weird, because aside from Psyren (reveal was probably in 2010, but appears to have been planned much earlier), there's Mass Effect (2007-2012, the twist may or may not have been planned before the third installment), Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011), Grimnoir Chronicles (2011-2014, and according to the author it was an independent evolution), and Kill la Kill (2013-2014). Oh, and Worm (2011-2013).
And those are some huge names in popular fiction. Psyren and Grimnoir are the most obscure, and the latter was on the Hugo shortlist. Which is why it's baffling that this trend would be reinvented so many times in such a short period, and without a clear instigator.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Battle Tendency (1988-1989) does have something related, with its reveal that the vampires from Part I were unknowing participants in a vampire pyramid scheme (remotely feeding blood to the beings that made the vampirization masks), as do Chrono Trigger (1995) which has an ancient planet-eating and gene-splicing monster that may or may not have been responsible for human evolution, and Final Fantasy VII (1997), with the long-dead world-eating space monster whose psychoactive blood keeps being used as supersoldier steroids. (Edit: I forgot to mention Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996), with the long-dead world-eating space monster being used as cloning materials for the giant cyborg mechas.)
But, like, it's weird that it would take ten years to mix those concepts, right? Making the secret world-eating alien be giving out superpowers on purpose, rather than the shady labs with access to its corpse?
Anyway.
Hey, do *you* have any idea why "superpowers are secretly distributed by a monster from space" seems to have been reinvented at least four times from 2007 to 2014? I've heard some hints that it might be rooted in Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, or even JJBA: Battle Tendency, but it's such an oddly specific thing.
I don't actually think it's oddly specific, I think it's a local minima for writers, which comes from a kind of can-kicking.
The problem with "random superpowers" is that it doesn't really make that much sense when you think about it at all, especially when those powers have a lot of very human-centric elements to them and aren't really grounded in any kind of understanding of the world.
So you're a writer, and you're thinking to yourself "well shit, none of this makes sense, it's all a little wonky from a setting perspective, why would powers work like this". And you can just bite the bullet and say "I don't know man, they just do", or you can think of some kind of handwave.
And I would submit that "aliens did it" has a lot of things going for it: these are inscrutable aliens with unknown motives and no morality, so we don't need to (and usually cannot) probe any further, they have the veneer of science and credibility that e.g. "a wizard did it" does not, and so these aliens can work however the settings needs them to work. They're an outcome pump, basically, and they're the closest convenient one. They're an excuse for weird, outside-context things to happen, and for readers to not probe any deeper. They seem legit enough, if you don't look too close. They can stand in for something pretty easily: pretty common for the aliens to be doing this for vague entertainment reasons, or colonialism, or this is some kind of pollutant effect or whatever, or superweapon testing. And again, specifically in the case of superpowers, there's a veneer of science on the whole thing, since aliens might exist, maybe. There's a lot of superhero stuff that has the same scientific veneer to it, so they match well together.
I guess I am, at heart, a believer in paths-of-least-resistance when it comes to writing, reinvention and convergence on solutions, and "aliens grant superpowers" seems to me like a solution to a problem that people would keep reinventing even if there were no prior works, and since there are prior works, you're also getting a lot of influence bleeding in, making the choice for "aliens grant superpowers" a lot easier. Audiences are familiar, they won't balk.

Ding Dong Happy Valentine's Day! Not one, not two, but three gifts for Mr. Lyall Shiba have appeared!
Opening up the first gift revealed to be...

...A grimnoire styled journal.
Opening the second gift revealed to be...

...Gothic onyx cross earrings.
Opening the third and final gift revealed to be...

...A series of provocative nun cosplay photos.
With these gift came a letter.
'Happy Valentine's Day, babe!
Hope you're having fun today, schnookums! I can't wait to see you and Kaoru soon and I was just too excited so I sent my gifts early, hope you like them!
- Joey.
P.S. Thanks for the nun costume you nympho, I got your 'gift', you trying to give me a fucking heart attack?? (ー`´ー)'
Happy Valentine's Day! 💗
Lyall smirked as he gazed at the provocative photos of his boyfriend dressed in a slutty nun costume. The sight of this made the homicide detective’s pants grow tighter. Joey wanted to tease him, didn’t he? How bold of his boyfriend to do that to him all of people. Joey should've known better. It seems like he didn’t remember his lesson from the last time he did that. Naughty boy. Lyall was gonna make sure he wouldn't be walking anytime soon.
Standing up, Lyall made his way to the door not even bothering to grab a jacket. The cold barely did anything to him with all the heat he was already feeling. A perverted smile on his face as he imagined all the things he could “punish” Joey with. It was like Christmas came early to him. Was it cruel? Perhaps but the sight of Joey begging for release was all too good for Lyall. Just before he was about to leave his home Lyall turned to his empty living room and spoke out.
“Kaoru dear, I know you’ll be watching. I’ll make sure it’ll be a show worth watching.”

umbrella, sender lets receiver under their umbrella.
priscilla wishes she’d checked the weather that morning. though grimnoire usually had cloudy weather and humid skies, rain wasn’t always a guarantee. she’d just finished a performance at a local club nearby, and though she could tell she was getting drenched from the rain, she was at least grateful she was wearing a coat.
though suddenly—the rain stops. priscilla can still hear it hit the ground and she can see it ripple through the puddles of the street ahead. she looks up to see an umbrella, and then beside her to see the man holding it. he seemed vaguely familiar somehow… though not in a personal way. regardless, she’s quick to thank him.
“ oh! thank you, ” priscilla’s posture relaxes a bit knowing she’s been sheltered from the rain. she lets out a nervous laugh, “ this is making me realize i should check the weather more often… “

Grimnoir by ProP
It's his biggest selling point and it's a cold, hard fact: occult detective Jacob Morris has never lost a case, and he's been in this business a long time. Join him and his singularly skilled colleague Solene in rainy Steel City as they take on a series of cases involving monsters, people, and that which falls between. Grimnoir is a hypertext mystery game featuring seven main cases, multiple endings, and an inordinate amount of whiskey. An internet connection and speakers are recommended for the best experience, but not required. The game is not recommended for young children.
#interactive fiction#twine gardening#grimnoir#this game ranked 4/77 at ifcomp 2018.#as the name suggests it's a mystery...#i haven't finished this. i've started it but haven't gotten very far.#to finish

Oooh! Thank you @saxifrage-wreath for the tag. I never pass up a chance to talk about books.
Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (will be my favorite book until I die. Typically this becomes shorthand for the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings which I'm starting to see as one unit.)
Watership Down by Richard Adams (I can never get enough of this story about rabbits who bond during an adventure, find a home, defend it, and live happily ever after.)
The Exorcist (Just like love is a choice not a feeling, so is faith.)
All Band of Brothers books (I collect these and they're my favorite.)
3000 Degrees (Firefighters on the radio with each other as they die. Here is a tiny bit of my soul, feel free to destroy it.)
The Sharpe's Rifles Series by Bernard Cornwell.
The Grimnoir Chronicles by Larry Coriea (Just plain fun.)
Helmet for my Pillow by Robert Leckie (My second favorite author.)
With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge
The Book of the Dun Cow (READ IT!)
The Valley of Vision (My favorite book of poetry)
The Last Unicorn (Utterly beautiful. Every single word.)
Consider yourself tagged if you too love to talk about books!
Tagged by @mademoiseli to share a number of books that are dear to me. (thank you, friend!) So here we go:
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis
the Redwall series by Brian Jacques (I couldn’t get enough of these books as a kid, like I lived and breathed them)
The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff
Warrior Scarlet by Rosemary Sutcliff
The Histories by Herodotus of Halicarnassus
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (first of the classics I ever read)
the works of James Herriot (I’ve got an omnibus edition so that counts as one)
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn (I read this while studying the USSR in high school modern history)
the Gaunt’s Ghosts series by Dan Abnett (quite possibly the best military sci-fi I’ve read)
the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling (there, I’ve said it. Reading them gives me this weird like coming home sort of feeling)
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
the Boggart books by Susan Cooper
Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder (her other books are great, but these two are just so special to me)
the Thrawn Trilogy of Star Wars books by Timothy Zahn
Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
the Jeeves books by P.G. Wodehouse
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
Optionally tagging @lightthewaybackhome @audreythevaliant @zelzahdarkcloak @accidental-spice @teabooksandsweets @the-old-fashioned-girl @hollers-and-holmes @thatfriendlyanon @dimsilver @raspberryzingaaa anyone else who wants to share :)
