i think people assume that since there is 1 egg and 500 million sperm, that "you" depend on the sperm that gets there first, and the headline is leaning into that as a hook
also, i would argue that "you" aren't the egg or the sperm, you're the zygote. kinda like how a grilled cheese sandwich isn't the cheese or the bread if yknow what i mean
finally, i looked up the article (https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2020.0805) and uhhh this infographic is wrong.
the article was about cryptic female choice (in this case, the hidden ability of eggs to determine whose sperm gets to fertilize them). basically, eggs may respond differently to sperm from different people, which means that your eggs can judge you on your choice of partner. honestly that may be funnier as a headline. check out the article if you're curious!
