Wk3Task: Visual mapping

This week was a further exploration of visualising the data I retrieved from last week’s web scraping using the hashtag #greennepal. I had to sign into Google Analytics Data Studio where I can edit my data and convert it into a visual chart determined by whichever factor I wanted displayed. To illustrate (as pictured below), I selected retweets, favourites and replies as my quantified data and along with the year when the tweet was posted, the data reassembled into a visual data chart, organised into different colours and annotated with the names of the account holders.

I thought this task was very useful to gain insight into how data visualisation works and how we can utilise it for our own benefit. This task gave me a small excerpt to a greatly obscure industry which works with extensive volumes of data. I am now more aware of the ways that technology can provide multi-sensory spaces for information to be stored and displayed.

Wk2Task: Web Scraping

After adding the web-scraper extension to my Google Chrome, I imported web data from the hashtag ‘greennepal’. This allows the bots to scan certain data from the web content using the given JSON. It’s really interesting to know that desired data can be collected automatically into a database, where it is recorded and organised into a set of categories for instance I know the social handles of the tweets along with the number of retweets and favourites.

I found the actual process of entering several pieces of information onto the web scraper slightly demanding; however once the process is completed the first time, it becomes straight-forward.

I have also learned that web-scraping has been met with criticism for it’s potential violation of privacy, confronting a larger ethical debate on these premises. Knowing this, it makes a lot of sense to reinforce that web-scraping is submitted using information located only from public domains.
