What Biden's Administration Could Mean for Climate Change
The Biden administration is a significant win for environmental activists everywhere. Environmental policy was a significant part of Biden’s campaign and in the first few weeks of his presidency he has followed through on many of his promises. Biden has stressed the importance of the connection between the environment and the economy, pledging to create jobs in clean energy. Biden also focuses on environmental issues in creating his “Climate Cabinet” to restore both domestic and international climate leadership.
In his first day in office, Biden passed a flurry of executive orders, climate change being at the forefront of the policies. Biden rejoined the Paris Agreement, revoked the permit for the keystone XL pipeline, and “ordered federal agencies to start reviewing and reinstating more than 100 environmental regulations” rolled back by Trump.
Despite these monumental changes, I still have to wonder if Biden’s environmental policies are enough. We are reaching a tipping point where global warming may cause irreversible environmental damage. This requires global efforts to mitigate climate change, and I fear Biden’s policies may still be too limited. Biden has repeatedly stated that he will not ban fracking, an incredibly damaging oil drilling technique. Protecting big corporations and the economy may cost us our planet. We need to shift to a green economy and take more extreme action to mitigate climate change before it is too late.
