Rule 1: Practice Adaptability Life is rarely completely black and white. My #training and #experiences has taught me that while knowing what to do in an #event is important, ultimately, being #adaptable will save you. The word “save” can mean many things in this context. Keep in mind, that it’s your ability to put adaptability into practice, in unexpected situations that can make the biggest difference. Life doesn’t always go as planned, and it’s crucial to be ready to tackle what it throws at you with the tools you have on hand. The best part about this rule is that it isn’t hard to practice. You’ll see that while being a fast, strong, powerful person is great, there’s a limit to how helpful this can be if you’re unable to adapt to a new, and potentially threatening event. Make a point of cultivating adaptability whenever you can. Will you join me in my pursuit for continuous flow-state? Calm winds & soft landings. A surprisingly simple & easy way to use your watch as a compass only requires enough sunlight to cast a shadow from a twig. If you ever become lost, & don’t have a compass, you can easily discover your direction by establishing a North-South line from your wrist watch. In the Northern Hemisphere. Align a twig (pointing up) at the edge of your watch so that it casts a shadow onto the face of the watch from the sun. Then while holding the twig steady, rotate the watch until the twig’s shadow is cast directly onto the position of the hour hand. In other words, you’re aligning the shadow with the hour hand (you’re pointing the hour hand in the direction of the sun). Bisect the angle between the hour hand & 12-o’clock. This halfway point between the hour hand & the 12-o’clock position is your North-South line. To determine which end of the line is north, remember this… The sun rises in the east, & is in the east before noon. The sun is due south at noon. The sun sets in the west, & is in the west after noon. Note: If your watch is set to daylight savings time, use the halfway point between the hour hand & 1 o’clock to determine the north-south line.   In the Southern Hemisphere. Align a twig (pointing up) at the edge of your watch so that it casts a shadow onto the face of the watch from the sun. Then while holding the twig steady, rotate the watch until the twig’s shadow is cast directly onto the 12-o’clock position. In other words, you’re aligning the shadow with the 12-o’clock position (you’re pointing the 12-o’clock position in the direction of the sun). The halfway point between 12-o’clock & the hour hand is your North-South line. Now, don’t get lost! Now that the dust has mostly settled from our recent e-vent. It’s time to begin reflection. Reflection on a personal & professional level. What YOU just executed Was unprecedented. The DIV opened an Air Bridge & maintained it long enough to conduct the largest air lift in U.S. history. Say whatever you want about the operation, & you are probably right. However, what YOU did was nothing short of a miracle. YOU were called, & YOU…became. YOU became whatever was asked of YOU. YOU found the gaps & filled them. I thank you, the U.S. Army thanks you, your country thanks you. I am humbled to walk amongst giants every day. As leaders we take a lot of things for granted. We do a horrendous job of explaining things, tech, doctrine, terms, tactics, techniques, etc, etc, etc… We throw around terms like NEO & never take the time to explain it to you. YOU just executed a NEO. In an attempt to correct our leadership shortcomings, a NEO is: Noncombatant Evacuation Operations (NEO) is the ordered (mandatory) or authorized (voluntary) departure of civilian noncombatants & nonessential military personnel from danger in an overseas country to a designated safe haven, typically within the continental United States. Overseas evacuations could occur under a variety of circumstances, including civil unrest, military uprisings, environmental concerns, & natural disasters. The Department of State (DOS) recommends an evacuation, & the Department of the Army—as the Department of Defense (DOD) Executive Agent for repatriation (RE-PAT) planning & operations—coordinates the execution of NEO. Welcome home Sky Wraiths and good job! We are all so proud of you. Even the ones that won’t tell you that. Let's be clear. Get home bags (GHB), bug out bags, everyday carry bags, and go bags aren't the same. The GHB is designed to keep you alive until you reach home, safely. As we’ve said, the “event” doesn’t discriminate. It can come at any time & place. You may find yourself in an event while at work or play. Or, maybe you just wanna make your way home to bug in before a long-term disaster strikes. Either way, having a well-stocked GHB can help improve your chances. A GHB is lightweight, to not slow you down yet, packed with enough essentials to help you reach home alive. Ideally, the journey from your workplace to home would take a couple of hours, but it can stretch out depending on the situation. That said, you can't exactly know where you'll be when the balloon goes up, so the deciding factor for bag size is your typical daily commute. You can store your bag under your work desk, in a locker, a PO box, or car trunk. At the very least, it should be where it's within your reach. Caution, if you choose to keep your bag in your car: there's a chance you won't have access to your vehicle in emergencies like earthquakes or riots, so consider that. Get home bags are ideal for any person who spends a lot of time outside the house, like those who work in an office, students who go to school, or even retirees who’re always out & about. There is no perfect get home bag. Ultimately, the decision rests in your hands. If there's one secret I'd like to share, though, it's that less is more. Remember, the point of a GHB is to help you get home as fast as possible. You don't want it to weigh you down. Pack only what you consider absolutely essential. While you're at it, brush up on your survival skills. The more you know, the less you need. Wishing you Calm winds & soft landings...We’ll see you on the drop zone... de CB55, out. #MakeArtilleryGreatAgain #aatw #LifeIsTooShortToBeALeg #airborne #SendIt #GreenEyesBlackRifles #DeathFromAbove #NeverAFairFight #Paratrooper #LiveReady #MassTheFire #OnePercentDaily #IfYouKnowThenYouKnow #mission #leadership #UnbeatableLGOPS #BringingSexyBack #WarriorsWanted #ContinuousFlowState (at End of the Earth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPebMhArfCo/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today, I had the privilege of witnessing a very close friend take the guidon. It was a very prideful moment for me. He has worked so hard, vastly harder than I did to get to that point. Scott is going to have to deal with many challenges throughout his command. Challenges that didn’t even cross my mind when I was a commander. It was a much different time, we were at the height of the war and the environment was very permissive. That is not the case in the current operating environment. However, he is the commander for the job. He is what that battery needs right now. The universe has willed it, and I am so happy for him. It is an exciting time. Exciting for him, exciting for his Paratroopers, and the friends and family that get to watch him and his new team develop and thrive. As I watched him grab that guidon, I thought back to that time for myself. I have nothing but the best of memories, and so will Scott. Other than where I am, right now, commander is the best job I ever had. I am positive he will feel the same when he passes his guidon to the next commander. Good luck my friend, and don’t forget to reach out early and often. We the 82d ABN DIVARTY staff are here to help you succeed. Airborne, All the Way! A Combat Tracker is used to establish/re-establish contact with an enemy, gather information & recover lost/missing personnel. Its following a person or animal by signs left behind. When a man or animal moves over/through the natural environment, they alter it & create disturbances. Tracking is more than following sign. Trackers use visual, auditory, & olfactory to: DETECT, FOLLOW, INTERPRET, ANTICIPATE, & LOCATE. Know the environment & target. Be honest with yourself & others. Be patient & persevere. Know the quarry, its characteristics, habits & gait. Learn the local flora/fauna & how sign affects the environment’s state. Learn light & shadow & how to use it. As the sun rises, it casts longer shadows that bring out visible details made on the ground. As the sun climbs, the details will fade. When the sun is directly overhead (noon), little or no shadow will appear. As the sun falls, the shadows lengthen allowing details to be identified more easily. During the day, flashlights can help bring out impressions in a track trap that may not be seen from available sunlight, especially if working under forest canopy. Be aware of your position as it relates to the track & track line. Never walk on top of/contaminate the sign & keep tracks between you & the sun. Know the difference between conclusive & inconclusive sign. Conclusive is traced to the quarry you’re following such as a footprint with specific sole pattern & size. Inconclusive is broken twigs, bent grass or a foot impression with no discernible sole pattern. The 7 Tracking Principles 1. Positively identify tracks you’re going to follow. 3. Keep the track-line between you & the light source. 5. Observe & track as far out as the sign can be recognized. 6. Never move further than the last known sign. 7. Never contaminate the sign. 8. Never track faster than your own ability will allow. 9. Get into the mind of the quarry. The Oxford Dictionary defines #adaptability as: (noun), 1. the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions. 2. the #capacity to be #modified for a new use or purpose. I hear people talk about that four letter word, #time. Look, let me be clear about one thing, you have it, you always did, and you always will. Time. Time is manufactured by you (us). What ‘we’ need to do is rethink what “normal” is. Change the construct. Create the new normal. Nothing is ever perfect. If it looks different, but accomplishes that same end, mission success. My main man and fellow “Shadow Governor” CB1, wants to run in the Marine Corps Marathon this year, and he asked me if I was interested. I know Mike pretty well and to me, that was an honor to be asked. So, if CB1 asks CB55 to run a marathon with him…CB55 begins to prepare for said marathon. The boy in tow, the miles got done on a Saturday morning. No, it wasn’t perfect, but we had PAAF, perfect weather, and adaptability. Seven miles later, we were doing Jumpy Boi things on post for the day. We had an amazing Da-Da/Ari day and trained. You have time, if you have adaptability. My people, listen to me. Manufacturer the time. Spoiler alert, it doesn’t really exist anyway. Celestial Navigation has always been an interest of mine. Most understand the concept of the earth revolving around the sun & in turn, its own rotation. Also, in the Northern Hemisphere, stars seem to spin around Polaris, rising in the east & setting in the west. In reality, it’s actually the earth rotating around the other way. You can navigate with knowledge of a few key constellations. The Big Dipper & Cassiopeia, are guideposts for finding Polaris & one of them (if not both) are always visible. The Big Dipper looks like a ladle with a long handle, created by seven stars. The outer two stars, Merak and Dubhe, are “pointer” stars. By drawing an imaginary line through these two stars, roughly five times their combined distance from each other, you’ll be on Polaris. Opposite the Big Dipper is Cassiopeia, a “W” shaped constellation made up of five stars. The middle star, Gamma, which forms the middle tip of the “W,” is the pointer star. By following Gamma the same distance as you did from The Big Dipper, you’ll hit Polaris. Now you’ve located north, stretch your arms out to find east, right hand & west, your left. Polaris is also the last star in “tail” of the Little Dipper. Depending on where you are & light pollution, you may be able to find the Little Dipper & Polaris without needing to use the Big Dipper. Something to also consider, is finding your latitude based on the angle between Polaris & the horizon. Since latitude lines run east-west & are measured by the distance north or south of the equator, it can help you determine how far north you are. By taking a fist out in front of you, count how many “fists” are between Polaris & the horizon. This is approximately 10 degrees for every fist. So four fists would mean 40˚ & put you on the same latitude as Denver, Colorado. Being able to approximate latitude may help you in an event. “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” - Will Rogers Countertracking techniques are employed as an attempt to lose those who are pursuing you. There are three main techniques to evade potential pursuers: Increase #speed & #distance. Attempt to move at a quicker pace in an effort to outdistance. Employ #deception techniques. These methods are non-offensive in nature and designed to slow down or deny your pursuers information as to your route or intended destination. Employ #offensive techniques. These methods are designed to slow down, #discourage or #eliminate the pursuers by the use of #ambushes and/or the #employment of mines & booby traps. Evasion rules: 1. Never walk on anything that you can step over 2. Never cut anything you can break naturally 3. Never break anything that you can bend 4. Never bend anything that you can move out of your way 5. Never move anything when you can get through without moving it 6. Never step on soft ground when you can walk on something hard 7. Never establish a pattern that provide clues to your intentions 8. Oxford Dictionary defines #family as: “a group of one or more parents and their children living together as a #unit.” Look at these two. I am very fortunate. A lot of people think, I really have it all together. I am relied upon and trusted in times of question, need, or uncertainty. The truth is, I don’t have it all together. I don’t have all the answers. I’m actually, a hot mess behind closed doors. What I have is my family. That is the driving force. Failures are not an option for me. I can’t fail and I’m not afforded any excuses. The fact is, the reason WE don’t fail is because, I can’t fail. I have these two humans that I am ultimately responsible for, and because all of you are on this train with me, I can’t allow you to fail either. We’re bound by space and time. I practice extreme ownership. This means, I’m responsible for all we do or fail to do, in any circumstance or event. Because our job is deadly. Everything is life or death. So, as much as this photograph is my family, so are all the Paratroopers that I live and work with, day in and day out. For all of you, I must have it all together, I have to have all the answers, or at least...lead you to believe that I do. Because, you rely on me. Perception is reality and failure is not an option. Today the 82d ABN DIVARTY hosted an Airborne Operation for the 82d ABN DIV. This operation resulted in exiting 152 Paratroopers out of UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopters from the 82d CAB. Sicily Drop Zone witnessed the commitment of U.S. Paratroopers to remain proficient and confident in their training and equipment. Senior leaders from across the DIVARTY jumped with, rigged, and mentored junior Paratroopers to instill the legacy and pride in this storied Airborne Division. To reinforce our relevance, and our steadfast belief in our mission. Our mission to jump, fight, and win tonight and the battlefields of the future. This is your 82d ABN DIVARTY. My friend’s son, Jon cut the lawn with the weed eater. We looked out at him from the house, swinging away with the spinning tines, hacking at the grass. Uneven. Bare, in the spots where either the ground moved or he did. Ugly is the word, but cut. Growing up my Dad perfected mowing the lawn: two passes around the outside & then overlapping & opposing 45-degree swaths. It looked like the outfield of a ballpark. Watered & fed, his yard was something to behold. I remember getting into trouble – sometime in my high school years – because I parked on the front section of grass. I thought it was acceptable. Dad thought otherwise. The sound of the weed eater fighting against the length of the grass & the size of the yard, brought back memories of my own chores, & the realization that I now embrace the idea of, “whatever works”. Sure, the kid mowed the lawn with a weed eater: but he mowed it. I don’t care how he did it, just that he got it done. This translates into fighting, tactics, & training for the fight: I don’t care how you hit ’em, just hit ’em. There are more effective ways & there are more efficient ways but don’t lose sight of one of the most important: the exigent one. Hitting beats not hitting when hitting is required. Similarly, I rather the lawn be cut with a weed eater than not at all. Midway through Jon’s afternoon you could see him thinking about a more efficient way. But it was hard to argue with his exigent way: any direction, any pace, any thing, was no match for that screaming string. It is not about the tool, it is about the willingness to get the job done. So grab a fork, the roses need tending. Will you join me in my pursuit for continuous flow-state?
