0. Pilot -- Transcript
Listen here: [link]
[The podcast's intro plays -- it is a simple but slightly foreboding sounding melody]
[sound of a voice recorder clicking on] AARUSH: I uh... don’t know where to start, to be honest. From the beginning-- but I don’t even know where that is, I mean– okay. Deep breaths.
[Aarush takes a breath and breathes out.]
AARUSH: This is Agent Varma, reporting on the assignment to a new entity. The entity is a sentient nullification object, capable of completely disabling all forms of magic in an area. The Bureau has assigned it the name of ‘Fuse’. The ability of this entity is to completely nullify any magic in its area, the entity is sentient and alive, blah blah blah. If possible, bring it back to the Bureau for safe containment.
[Long pause. When Aarush speaks next, he sounds conflicted.]
AARUSH: Well. It seems like this . . . ‘Fuse’ is a character that can be communicated with? An animal? A sentient object, maybe? I remember that one world map–
[The voice recorder clicks off.]
~
[The scene has changed to a small coffee shop. Background noises include indistinct chatting and cutlery being used.]
AARUSH: (breathing out and muttering.) Okay. Green tea latte, large, less ice. Green tea latte, large, less ice. Green tea–
CASHIER: Hey, what can I get ya?
AARUSH: Green tea latte, lice, less arge. I mean-- less ice, large. Sorry. Can I just get that to-go? Thank you.
[He walks and sits at a booth with a clear view of the entrance of the coffeeshop. There is a rustle as he takes out the voice recorder and clicks it on.]
AARUSH: Current location, Blooms n’ Potions, a coffee shop that doubles as a flower shop. That cashier over there didn’t look too happy, but she’s working a shift at a café, so it doesn’t seem out of the ordinary.
AARUSH: This is also one of the known haunts of Fuse. I have a machine with me that'll tell me when an anomaly walks through that door. Hopefully it comes soon and I can avoid this place for the rest of my life...
[The machine beeps while at the same time the bell over the door jingles.]
AARUSH: (fervently, but quietly) Shit. No one fucking told me Fuse was a person! Oh, shit... Okay. Okay, okay. Focus. Ugh I need to... yes.
[He gets up from his seat and walks into line behind Quinn.]
QUINN: Iced apple and mango tea, with a chocolate strawberry waffle. To go, please.
AARUSH: Hi, are you a regular here?
QUINN: (surprised and stuttering a little) S-sorry, a-are you talking to me?
AARUSH: Yeah! I’m new here, and there’s just a lot of choices... I was wondering which might be a good one?
QUINN: (to Aarush) Hold on.
QUINN: (to the cashier) Thanks for the drinks!
QUINN: (back to Aarush) Right, you’ll want to pick either the bagels or the cheesecake, I swear on my mother that both are positively divine.
AARUSH: Mm... not the cheesecake, I’m not a fan.
QUINN: (feigning shock) Not cheesecake!? Alright then, what about strawberry shortcake?
AARUSH: (to Quinn) Yeah, shortcake is fine.
[The bell over the door jingles as a new person enters the café and walks over into the line.]
AARUSH: (to cashier) A shortcake please. Ye– Yeah no, I’ll have it here.
???: Oh, goodness, Aarush, is that you?
AARUSH: (delighted) Candy! Goodness, it has been a while!
Candy: (curious) Quinn’s here too!
QUINN: (fond) Candy.
AARUSH: You two know each other?
CANDY: Sort of.
AARUSH: Let me guess... Intern? No, law student? Wait, no, I got it-- coffee intern.
QUINN: (laughs) God, no. I wouldn’t be caught dead in the law industry. No, I’m one of her clients. Harleyquinn Argus. A pleasure to meet you. You may call me Quinn.
AARUSH: (incredulous) No way... Quinn? Like, Detective Argus?
QUINN: (flirtatious) Oh, you've heard of me?
AARUSH: (amused) Yeah, a friend of mine is a fan of yours.
CANDY: (embarrassed laugh) Uh-heh... ha... Sorry about that, Quinn.
QUINN: (teasing) Well, well. Want my autograph later, Candy?
CANDY: It is not like that, it’s just...
QUINN: (mock-knowingly) I know, I know. I must’ve charmed you away from Indigo finally. And now you've run to Aarush over here just to complain.
CANDY: (embarrassed and annoyed) Quinn!!
QUINN: (copying her tone of voice) Candy!!
AARUSH: Alright, alright. You must see a lot of cases, chasing down criminals and whatnot.
QUINN: Not really. Most of my time is spent working for a magazine. Ever heard of ‘Hush!’? I work for them as a writer; most of their pieces are written by me.
AARUSH: No, is that a tabloid or something?
QUINN: (vaguely affronted) I’m a little offended that you’d think I’d work for a tabloid.
CANDY: As much as I love to watch you two banter, we are holding up the queue.
AARUSH: Uh, I have a table over there. Candy, care to join us, or is today an off-duty day?
CANDY: I’ll come over once my drink is done.
[Aarush and Quinn walk over and sit at the booth.]
QUINN: So, you still never told me what you actually work as. You’re a civil servant, but are you one of those black suits, or...?
AARUSH: Uhh, I work with the public...
[Quinn makes a sound of sympathy.]
AARUSH: (chuckling) It’s not that bad once you get used to the fact that most people suddenly don’t want to cooperate when they realize you’re part of the government.
QUINN: Ugh, I hear you. Every time they hear I’m a detective it's all “Ooh! Can you tell where I’ve been these past few hours? Or can you deduce my entire backstory?” I’m a detective, not Sherlock Holmes.
AARUSH: Well, can you?
QUINN: That’s not a trick I reveal on the first meeting.
AARUSH: So not a one-trick pony then?
QUINN: Master of many, actually.
CANDY: You two getting along?
AARUSH: Like a house on fire.
QUINN: Absolutely smashing.
CANDY: Well I’m not sure I like the sound of those metaphors... What’s the issue this time, Aarush?
AARUSH: Nothing much, just some new interns acting up and making use of the loopholes. And today’s a peaceful day, surprisingly. It’s been a whole four hours since I clocked in, and there hasn’t been a call for me yet.
CANDY: I keep telling you that you have to be stricter with them! They always treat you as the nice senior. One day, I tell you! One day!
AARUSH: (jokingly) But if I’m not the nice senior, then who will be? Not Jacques; they’re far too intense for that. Not you either, since you’re basically a consultant.
CANDY: Ooh, harsh. Unlike the two other members on my team, I actually have a job.
QUINN: Speaking of, there is something I want to ask you about, Candy. I’ve been working on a case recently, and I need some news about the laws on blackmail.
AARUSH: Blackmail?
QUINN: (clicks his tongue) Don’t you worry your pretty little head.
AARUSH: Is this just another thing that detectives have to research, or...?
CANDY: (laughs) You wouldn’t believe what he’s asked me about. For some reason, he keeps the same god-awful hours as me, so sometimes I’ll get a text at like, two o’clock in the morning asking for help with some obscure law that even I’m unfamiliar with. I keep telling him to read up by himself, but–
QUINN: That’s because I want an excuse to spend time with you, Candy. I need to endear myself to you so if Indigo ever tries to attack me, I can crash with you.
CANDY: Aww, Indigo wouldn’t do that. She hates you, but my partner would never stoop to murder. She’d just examine your past and find a way to convict you for life.
QUINN: (dryly) And that is so much better.
AARUSH: Jesus, Quinn! What did you do to Candy’s partner for her to hate you that much? It takes a lot for Indigo to really show that she dislikes you.
QUINN: Who knows? She’s professional, though. Never brings it up when I ask her something related to the law. But all bets are off when we stop talking shop.
[a phone notification sound chimes.]
CANDY: Well, It’s been lovely chatting, but I really have to go now. This was just a short coffee break anyway, so—
QUINN: The lawyer’s responsibilities strike again.
CANDY: I’ll send those files over to you later, Quinn. Aarush, later!
[Candy leaves and the bells over the door jingle again. Awkward silence ensues.]
QUINN: So.
AARUSH: Uh So. Um. Anything interesting happen lately?
QUINN: (teasing) Wow. You're really not a fan of silence, are you?
AARUSH: No, no I . . . I suppose not.
QUINN: (sighs) Anything interesting... hmm? Well, someone I know offered to read my future, and I accepted. Thinking about it now... I think you're supposed to be my Fool.
AARUSH: (disbelievingly) Excuse me?
QUINN: My future card was the Fool. I looked it up, and apparently it meant new beginnings. So I guess you're my new beginning?
AARUSH: That... is an incredibly cheesy mindset, oh my god–
QUINN: (embarrassed) Yeah I realized how it sounded when I said it out loud.
AARUSH: (cheekily) So... Is this how you usually talk your suspects into telling you things? Or am I just special?
QUINN: (covering his face with his hands) Ulgh, please. Let's stop talking now.
[The voice recorder clicks off.]
~
[The scene has changed to a small apartment. Background noises include ambient room sounds. The voice recorder clicks on.]
AARUSH: After chatting with Quinn, I really can’t connect the idea of a weapon of mass destruction with him. He just seems like a guy with a dry sense of humor. (sighs) This is wrong. We’re treating him as a thing to be used, but–
[The phone rings. Aarush lets it ring out and the call goes to voicemail.]
VOICEMAIL: At the end of your message, press 1. (beep)
AUTOMATED VOICE: Agent Varma, I know you’re there. Answer the call.
[Aarush walks and picks up his phone. He redials the number.]
AARUSH: Hello?
???: (the voice is clearly distorted and disguised) Mr. Varma, are you ready for the consequences that this will bring upon Ochens?
AARUSH: Who are you? This is a private line.
DEUCE: I am Deuce. I represent the Machine. (chuckles) I am also someone who is heavily invested in Quinn’s wellbeing. I will not tell you to stop your current path. But I will ask you this: If you had to choose between the world and Quinn, what is your choice?
AARUSH: You know of his powers, don’t you? The ‘Fuse’–
DEUCE: (sharply) He is more than his powers. Do not reduce him to a void.
AARUSH: (apologetic) Sorry.
DEUCE: But you are correct. Quinn is an essential cog in Ochens. He is the fuse, magic is the current, and I am Ochens’s engineer.
AARUSH: Is Quinn... important?
DEUCE: Beyond anything you could ever fathom. If he dies, Ochens dies with him. His existence itself is proof that the world exists.
AARUSH: Is that a part of his powers?
DEUCE: It's not a power. Quinn sees the world the way it wants to be seen.
AARUSH: (slightly strained) Cool. Great. So now you're telling me that the– what that the world is sentient? Self-aware? What, like it knows we’re listening?
DEUCE: Do you think otherwise?
AARUSH: (huffs disbelievingly) Come on.
DEUCE: You don’t have to believe me. But you must trust me. Your job to watch over Quinn is extremely important. You must listen to yourself, Aarush. Your ideals, your goals... (chuckles) You must remember yourself.
[The call ends, and the dial tone beeps.]
AARUSH: (sighs) End of report.
[voice recorder clicks off.]
[podcast outro music plays under the credits.]

Frappuccinos
Caramel - Bring some sweetness into your day! Caramel is sticky and sweet, so drink some to attract positivity and comfort to stick with you throughout the day! You could also drink it while you’re studying to help things stick in your brain. Pair with sodalite.
Chai Creme - Don’t you mean the perfect spiced up love potion in coffee form?? This frappuccino uses a spicy chai tea which contains black tea, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, star anise, and pepper aka your perfect blend of passion, charm, courage, lust, and aphrodisiacs.. *wink wink*. Pair with garnet.
Cinnamon Dolce - On the go? Pairing cinnamon, coffee, and sugary goodness is great for boosting your energy! Relaxing? Who doesn’t love a warm cinnamon-y sugar feeling? You can also use this beverage to bring peace and relaxation! Pair with carnelian / blue lace agate.
Coffee - Coffee is fantastic for mental clarity and grounding. If you’re having one of those days, get some coffee and go for a walk. Take advantage of the boosted alertness to enjoy nature, clear your mind, and overcome any internal blockages. Pair with hematite.
Cotton Candy - (Does not contain caffeine) This vanilla and raspberry frappuccino is perfect for two things: peace and love. Vanilla’s calming aroma paired with this fruit of patience encourages peace of mind. On the other hand, vanilla’s loving vibrations paired with raspberries’ fidelity give you a perfect romance drink. (Raspberries are also used with pregnancy spells which is great because it is also caffeine free!) Pair with moonstone.
Green Tea - Matcha green tea is great for healing! It boosts immunity, reduces bad cholesterol, promotes healthy cell growth, is high in antioxidants, and helps you to relax if you are tense. When drinking, you can see your beverage cleansing and detoxing with every sip you take. Pair with bloodstone.
Java Chip and Mocha - One word: chocolate. These two frappuccinos are practically the same thing except one has chocolate chips in it, so I’m going to group them together. Chocolate is all about love and friendship, and people often give or receive chocolate as rewards. Pair it with a self-love bath and indulge. You deserve it! Pair with rhodonite.
Midnight Mint - How about a minty sweet cleanse? Mint is all about protection and cleansing, and when paired with chocolate brings a little positivity with it. Mint is also great for breaking spells, hexes, and jinxes, so if you’re feeling a bit wary, go grab yourself a drink! Pair with black tourmaline.
Pumpkin Spice - The perfect drink around Samhain to give you all your favorite fall spices in one! Pumpkins are fantastic for bringing some money your way especially when paired with the other spices in your PSF. On top of that, pumpkins are great for divination. Tarot readings in Starbucks, anyone? Pair with aventurine.
Strawberries & Creme - (Does not contain caffeine) Strawberries are very similar to raspberries correspondence wise. This drink is great for innocent or platonic love and happiness! Pair this drink with a friendship spell, or just grab one with your best bud. Pair with rose quartz.
Vanilla Bean -(Does not contain caffeine) Vanilla is always known for its amazing aroma! This drink is fantastic to drink for positivity, whether for yourself, or paired with a spell for others or your home. Pair with amethyst.
White Chocolate Mocha - I love white chocolate for glamour! Just like regular chocolate, it brings positivity, but white chocolate has a sweeter and lighter taste to it. Drink this in the morning to give yourself some boosted confidence and self-positivity for the day! Pair with selenite.

Cola (Coke)
Is useful for protection, exorcism and banishment. Drink it if someone won’t leave you the hell alone, or if you’re battling negative thoughts.

Is a drink for keeping good health, both physical and mental! Drink 7up if you need some peace of mind, or your stomach hurts. This is also good way to magically cleanse yourself! (You know, if all you have is soda!) Orange Soda
can bring happiness and inspire creativity! This is the soda for celebration and imagination. Have you noticed how young children are more likely to drink orange soda than adults? Maybe the key to your inner child is drinking more orange soda!
Grape Soda
the ~magical~ soft drink that boosts all your psychic powers. It’s the amethyst of soda and not just because it’s purple! (though that does help) Drink it before/during divination, spirit work, or any magic that relies on your connection with other, higher powers.
Pepsi
is the soda of justice, in a way. It’s good for tearing down enemies, breaking off relationships, or good old fashioned hexing. It’s also helpful in a less malicious ways, like bindings and mirror spells.
Sprite
is a soda of fortune and wealth, and you should drink it if you need to get a job or come into money somehow. Or, for general luck, and general success.
Dr. Pepper
represents identity and boosts confidence. If you’re dong any introspection, it can help connect you to your true self. If you’re using a glamour, it will assist in keeping up the appearance you’re trying to achieve.  Drink it before performances ( though not right before, because soda isn’t great for the voice.) or when you’re meeting someone new.
Strawberry Soda is a soda of romance and love! Drink it to invite new relationships into your love life. If that’s not your style, drink it to promote self-love! You deserve to treat yo self.
Ginger Ale
the one-up of sodas! Add it to another drink to boost it’s properties, or drink it own your own to give yourself a magical pick-me-up! Really it could be applied to any skill, mundane or otherwise, if you need it! Diet

Dear Mark: Broth, Fasting, Coffee, and Metformin (and More)
For today’s edition of Dear Mark, I’m answering a bunch of questions from comment sections. First, did I get AMPK and mTOR mixed up in a recent post? Yes. Second, I give a warning for those who wish to add ginger to their broth. Third, is it a problem that we can’t accurately measure autophagy? Fourth, how does coffee with coconut oil affect a fast? Fifth, is there a way to make mayonnaise with extra B12 and metformin? Actually, kinda. Sixth, should you feel awkward about proposing hypotheses or presenting scientific evidence to your doctor? No.
Let’s go:
Great article, but a couple of amends are required with regards to mTOR. Firstly, you mention in the last paragraph that curcumin activates autophagy by activating mTOR. Reading the actual article abstract though, it states the opposite, ie the effect of curcumin “downregulating AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in human melanoma cells”.
Great catch. I’m not sure how I flipped that around. AMPK triggers autophagy, mTOR inhibits it.
What you say about curcumin goes for all the other broth ingredients I mentioned. Ginger, green tea, and curcumin all contain phytonutrients which trigger AMPK, which should induce autophagy, or at least get out of its way. What remains to be seen is whether the amino acids in broth are sufficient to inhibit fasting-and-phytonutrient-induced autophagy. I lean toward “yes,” but is it an on-off switch, or is autophagy a spectrum? Does inhibition imply complete nullification? I doubt it.
Regarding autophagy and health and longevity, it’s important to note the manner in which glycine, the primary amino acid found in broth and gelatin, opposes the effects of methionine, the primary amino acid found in muscle meat and a great stimulator of mTOR.
One notable study found that while restricting dietary methionine increased the lifespan of lab rodents, if you added dietary glycine, you could keep methionine in the diet and maintain the longevity benefits. That doesn’t necessarily speak to the effect of broth on autophagy during a fast, but it’s a good reminder that broth is a general good guy in the fight for healthy longevity.
Funny you mentioned ginger and turmeric as I add both, along with a whole lemon and/or lime, to my list of ingredients when cooking my broth. Here’s another great tip: I juice turmeric root, ginger & lemon together in my Omega juicer and freeze in ice cube trays. I add a cube to curries and other dishes.
That’s a great idea. One cautionary note about the raw ginger: it will destroy your gelatin.
Raw ginger has a powerful protease, an enzyme that breaks down protein. If you grate a bunch of ginger into a batch of finished broth, or juice a few inches and dump it in, there’s a good chance you’ll lose the gel. The amino acids will remain, but you’ll miss out on the texture, the mouthfeel, the culinary benefits of a good strong gelatinous bone broth.
Heating the ginger with the broth as it cooks, or even just reducing the amount of raw ginger you add, should reduce the protease activity.
“Bone broth with turmeric, green tea, and ginger might actually combine to form a decent autophagy-preserving drink during a fast. Only one way to find out!” You say this as if there is a way for us to try this and see. Since we cannot measure autophagy, this statement makes no sense.
Touché.
Although it will all shake out in the end, or towards it. If things seem to be “going good” for you as you get older, if your doctor is always pleasantly surprised at your test results, if you maintain your vim and vigor as your peers degenerate, maybe it worked. Maybe it’ll add a few months or years to your life, and you’ll never quite know because you don’t have an alternate life in which you didn’t add the turmeric, green tea, and ginger to your broth for comparison.
At any rate, the mix tastes really, really good. That’s reason enough to drink the stuff.
What about drinking a cup of black coffee with one tablespoon of coconut oil blended in? What effect does that have on fasting?
You’ll burn less body fat (because you’re eating 14 grams of it).
Autophagy will be maintained (because fat has little to no effect on autophagy).
You may have better adherence. The fast might “feel” easier, although you might not be “fasting as hard.”
I often have cream in my coffee during a “fast,” and I see no ill effects. Although as I alluded to in the previous answer, these things are hard to definitively measure. Much of it is a mix of speculation, hope, intuition, and faith that our health practices are helping us and improving our outcomes.

Can you make a Mayo with metformin and increased B12? Thanks
You know what? Let’s try to make this happen.
Start with your favorite mayo recipe. Then, swap out the chicken egg yolks for two duck egg yolks. Each duck egg contains almost 4 micrograms of B12—more than the daily requirement. For comparison’s sake, the average chicken egg has about 0.5 micrograms.
At the end, add in a few drops of barberry extract—barberry is a good natural source of berberine, an alkaloid whose effects are similar to metformin’s. I don’t know if the extract will affect the emulsion of the mayo, but it shouldn’t be too much of a hindrance. Barberry is said to be bitter, so perhaps add a few pinches of a natural sweetener like stevia or monk fruit to counteract it.
I recently read a PubMed article that possibly ties Metformin use in diabetic patients with MTHFR mutation (in particular C677T) causing Vitamin B12 deficiency leading to Hyperhomocysteinemia which then may increase risk of vascular thrombosis. I have also read many articles/opinions that convey there is nothing to worry about with MTHFR mutations. My Mom is a Metformin treated (several years) diabetic who has the C677T mutation and has had one blood clot in her leg and, now while on blood thinners, has been experiencing severe swelling in lower extremities. I’m trying to figure out if we should be looking into this combination of Metformin and MTHFR mutation as the cause behind this or if the docs will think I’m just another wack-a-doo who diagnoses things via the internet, especially since I’ve already self-diagnosed Hereditary Hemochromatosis in myself earlier this year! Genes are fascinating!
Wack a doos make the world go round. Some of the greatest thinkers, creators, and doers throughout human history were considered by many to be insane.
And hey, this is your mother. There’s no shame in helping your kin.
A wack a doo would ask her doc about the potential for crystals to heal her tumor. A wack a doo would bring a printout of a random Reddit post to the appointment and use it as proof of her hypothesis. A wack a doo would ask the staff dietitian for a Breatharianism protocol. Bringing a legitimate medical article discussing a specific mutation that has been shown to induce B12 deficiencies in people taking the very same medication your mother is taking along with genetic results showing she has the mutation is far from crazy. Do it.
Besides, you’re totally right. A vitamin B12 deficiency (and the resultant elevated homocysteine levels) is a known risk factor for blood clots.
That’s it for today, folks. Take care and be sure to leave your comments and questions down below. Thanks for reading!
