Wreck-it Ralph 2 Analysis

  With almost all the Disney princesses (that belong in the "Disney Princess" line) appearing in Disney's newest movie, many people went crazy, many more went "oh. that's neat i guess", but it caused some discussion. The changes done to all the characters to fit with the Wreck-it Ralph universe were disappointing to those who were looking forward to see a more faithful recreation (like me), and some people even brought up the argument of "Same face syndrome" again. 

 Since I absolutely adore Disney animation (It being the job of my dreams and all), I'm making this post in hopes of shining light on the resemblances and differences and arguing that maybe these adaptions are more respectful to the originals than people give them credit for. 

For that I'm comparing most of them with the originals, for obvious reasons, and when applicable I'll also compare with the gaming franchise Kingdom Hearts, since rather than adapting the models to fit an uniform style, Square-Enix decided to recreate them as closely as they could. Head under the cut to see all of them!

SNOW WHITE (1937)

 Before I explain the similarities, I want to point out something about the first 3 princesses. Snow White, Cinderella and to a lesser extent Aurora were all animated with heavy help of a method called rotoscoping (where you draw on top of live-action footage) and consequentially have more realistic proportions than almost every other princess.  Sleeping Beauty would be one of the first movies where they'd start experimenting more their human characters, but it is still restrained. 

 Anyway. Snow White has chubby cheeks, very round eyes with softer corners and 3 larger eyelashes that are very characteristic of her.  Her lower lip is large and round, and her eyebrows are simple curves. She has a button nose. She is animated as a comedic, exaggerated version of her original self, mainly symbolized by the way she holds her hands (pictured) and the little head shakes she does when singing.

CINDERELLA (1950) 

Personally out of the 3 original princesses I find Cinderella to be the most different from the cartoon. Not just because, well, she has ears now but because I don't seem to get any cues of her original version from the animation. Then again the original Cinderella is animated with gentle, delicate slower movements movements while this one is making a shiv out of her shoe. However, she does keep some of the original design in the model itself. Her eyes are a bit round, with the upper eyelid being rounder than the lower, but the corners of her eyes are evident without causing the eye to look almond-shaped. I'd pull her outer corner a little bit more outwards or at least add an eyeliner but nobody is perfect. Her nose is slightly pointy but mostly round. I'm hoping that when we get to see more of her she'll demonstrate more of her slower, graceful nature. I don't mind that all those characters are more energetic and cartoony in this movie, but in Cinderella's case it seems to go against her very personality.

AURORA - SLEEPING BEAUTY (1959)

Aurora has a very diamond-shaped jaw, and while she appears to have a rounder one in this movie screencap, she demonstrates this diamond-shaped jaw whenever she's not facing straight forward.  Her lower eyelid has a very prominent "corner" to it like the original, making it kinda look like she has two outer eye corners. Her nose is pointy and thin. Her inner eyebrows could go lower and be closer together but the general thickness is very close. Her mouth isn't as wide as the others and her smile is V-shaped.  My gripe with her design is her hair, because IT SHOULD CURL THE OTHER WAY.  Her body language captures a lot of the gracious, romantic behavior she exhibits while awake in the movie. It differs from Cinderella's posture because Cinderella behaves more in a motherly, warm and kind fashion while Aurora behaves more "professionally" and in a more reserved way. 

ARIEL - THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989) 

 Ariel is one of the closest to the original IMO, but she has subtle differences. Her eyes keep the same general curves, with the upper eyelids being more curved and bending more towards the inner face. However, in the new version they are less vertical. Her nose is small, pointy and turned a little bit upwards, her lips are thin and don't have a cupid's bow. She has big cheeks but they are not as round as Snow White's, and her forehead is more forward, giving her the curve seen in the 2D version. For her the biggest difference is the eyelashes, that are way less uniform and are way thinner in the 2D version.  She still keeps the bright-eyed, curious expression, being very similar to Rapunzel in behavior.

In a side topic, I'm extremely glad to see her hair being done properly in 3D, by comparison with Kingdom Hearts 3. Her hair is a huge part of her animation and what made it impressive (as important to her body language as Rapunzel's hair is. Strange how much the two of them have in common) I was disappointed that in Kingdom Hearts 3 she kept the stiff hair she had in the first games even with the advance in technology. Her eyes are also closer in shape to the original than the Kingdom Hearts edition even if that one got the general face proportions right.  KH is closer in proportion while Wreck-it Ralph is closer in specific shapes. 

BELLE - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991)

Belle is also one who I didn't see a lot of her original personality, though she was very gentle and gracious in the original as well, which contrasts with her more cartoony animation here.

She has a larger nose than most princesses and it's also one of the most round, and her lips, while they have a cupid's bow, are less defined.

Her eyes are more almond-shaped, having the outer corner being higher up than the lower. Her eyebrows are pretty close in shape, thickness and distance to the original (considering the change of art style).

One thing that could be done was to make her laugh lines more prominent in the 3D model, since they tend to appear when she's grinning in the original. Going back to Kingdom Hearts, i must say that Belle's appearance there is not very accurate. I think that something is off with her face in Kingdom Hearts 2, like her face looks squashed, longer and different from the original.

JASMINE - ALADDIN (1992) 

Jasmine for me is one of the most accurate to the originals, with her almond shaped eyes, characteristic nose, sculpted lips and more oval shaped face. Her eyebrows also look slightly more accurate to the original than the KH counterpart, with the inner edge not being round (though they should be thicker). She shares a lot of the posture of the original, specially with the tendency of stopping with one leg in front of the other and bending her torso in a way that kinda highlights her butt (but you do you Jasmine) 

POCAHONTAS (1995)

So, Pocahontas is one of the most unique-looking movies in the Disney canon, having the most realistic body proportions of Disney canon in decades.

Her movie is also characterized by having stronger edges and a more angular shape. That entire proportional yet angular look is mostly out of the window, but her face still has the most geometric features of them all. 

A strong chin, a big triangular upper lip, a nose with up-turned nostrils that has a kind of v-shaped outline... Also even with the change of art style she has a slightly stronger build than the rest of the princesses. 

In terms of animation she has that classic impossible hair, and keeps the dignified and mysterious attitude she has most of the time when she's not trying to see what's just around the riverbend. 

MULAN (1998)

She is definitely really close to the original, though the proportions got shifted around for the art style. 

Her round face, almond shaped eyes with a single eyelash going outwards in the corrner, and her very caracteristic lips are there (her lips are one thing they did more accurately than Kingdom Hearts as well). Though I think her nose should be slightly flatter to be closer to the Original and the Kingdom Hearts rendition. 

 I haven't seen enough of her facial animation to form an opinion on expressions, but she does enter the scene with that jump kick she does in the end of "Be a Man" so there's that.

TIANA - THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG (2009)

Same case with Mulan, the biggest differences are just to accommodate for the art style. Her characteristic smile looks pretty great in 3D, dimples and all (though I think Coco did a better looking dimple for Miguel, those look a bit fake) 

Since the movies are so close together, being technically released in the same "Disney era" with way more artist overlap than previously (as in, more people who worked in the two movies), the animators already have a lot of practice animating her so I expect that she'll be pretty accurate.

RAPUNZEL - TANGLED (2010)

Speaking of accuracy, we're finally on the realm of 3D disney princesses. I like this comparison that @constable-frozen made (I apologize for not asking first/Lo siento no haber pedido antes/Desculpa por não ter perguntado primeiro). It shows that even the 3D princess got changed to fit the movie so it's not the 3D that is to blame for this change and that it was very much intentional rather than just lack of skill from the artists. But back to the comparison, I find it amazing how apparent the improvement in technology is, with Rapunzel having more natural skin and more strands in her hair (as well as the hair also looking more natural). Like i mentioned before, Rapunzel's hair was ground-breaking for Disney, since they spent years perfecting the technology for it. 8 years later and it looks greater than ever.  The whole lighting in the scene looks more natural as well, taking away the slight "PS3 game cutscene" feel the original gives me. Speaking of her hair, Kingdom Hearts 3 still didn't give us a look at her face, but the developers keep telling us of how much work they put into making her hair and turning it into a gameplay element as well. Seems fitting that a story about a girl with long hair would cause innovation in hair simulation for both animation and games.

MERIDA - BRAVE (2012)

Ok so this will definitely take some using to. In this pic specially she looks a bit like a baby. Though from other pics I think they at least nailed the facial expressions. Still, seeing her with those big bright eyes makes her almost look like Jessie from Toy Story, both having red hair and a very round face.

MOANA (2016)

To finish, here's Moana, from their last movie, to exemplify again that the change in art style is pretty much intentional. Larger eyes and eyebrows, smaller nose and mouth. Thin neck. Pretty much what happened to everyone else. Wreck-it Ralph stylized them to make them fit with each other and with the place they appear in. Otherwise they keep the basic shapes and ideas of the originals, only following the general style of the current artists. I hoped they'd keep the proportions and styles as close to the original as possible, but I won't pretend they didn't put any effort. All characters presented in those images belong to Walt Disney Animation Studio and Pixar Animation Studio.

PS: ANNA AND ELSA - FROZEN (2013)

I couldn’t get decent enough pictures for the both of them for me to make a comparison while I was writing. Might edit the post with the pic tomorrow.

In the original, their eyes are larger than most princesses and their noses are pointier. The two of them look really alike because they're sisters but there's differences:

Anna has chubbier cheeks and curved eyebrows while Elsa's eyes have a drooping lower eyelid common in smug/sexy characters, as well as L-shaped eyebrows.

The changes from the movie to the Wreck-it Ralph 2 version are essentially the same as Moana's (larger upper face, smaller lower face), plus an extra difference of them having bigger, more voluminous hairdos than what they had.

It really highlights how Macaque can say things that make perfect sense, and you can even picture outsiders getting angry at Wukong for this, but the reality is that Macaque is in fact very cunning.

What’s wrong with beating Wukong in a spar to get his attention? That seems like an innocent approach considering most of their interactions involve training for battle.

But it’s not true. We know Macaque has a vendetta against Wukong that he’s not afraid of abusing MK to get revenge for.

Some people need specific ways for you to get their attention. (Like being told ‘I feel like I won’t make it through the night if this doesn’t get fixed now’ instead of ‘I feel very sick to my stomach’ to snap them out of underplaying someone’s sickness, as an example.) Wukong happens to be one of them. He also has the fact that he hasn’t known MK well enough to read his more subtle cues working against him.

And Macaque knows this.

And Macaque is taking advantage of this.

JOSEPH KOSUTH

Titled (Art as Idea as Idea) The Word "Definition" (1966-68) Artwork description & Analysis: After beginning his One and Three series, Kosuth wanted to further remove images and objects from his language-based Conceptual art, and this led to his Art as Idea as Idea series. In these works, he produced enlarged photostats of definitions of words that look like they came from dictionaries, which he then mounted on walls similar to how paintings, drawings, or photographs would be exhibited. He makes the viewer aware of the multiple identities and types of existence that these various things have, as solid objects and tangible things, as mechanical reproductions that are quickly made and mass-produced, and as verbal, written, and intangible equivalents. This challenges us to think of how we would define or explain simple, ordinary things that we see and use in our daily lives.

Artwork description & Analysis: In 1993, Kosuth created Double Reading, a series of about twenty silkscreen prints on laminated glass that were illuminated from behind with neon lights. In each of these works, a cartoon from a newspaper or magazine with dialogue and captions is juxtaposed with a quote from a famous philosopher, theologian, political leader, and so on. Some of these works use cartoons with lots of text and long quotes while others are quite brief. In this work, a cartoon of a man in a large office filled with rectangular furniture, lighting, windows, and doors uses his intercom to ask his secretary to bring him a "round object." This cartoon is accompanied by a short quote from St. Augustine: "Dogmas are fences around the mystery." The viewer is encouraged to contemplate the situation illustrated humorously in the illustration by comparing it to the more serious and rather theoretical text from an earlier and different time in history and culture. The multiple, complex, and variable meanings of the profound quote are made noticeable in ways that are quite gradual and subtle.

Noses and Ears, Etc.: The Gemini Series: Profile with Ear and Nose (Colour) (2006)

Artwork description & Analysis: In this piece Baldessari exposes an isolated nose and ear on a facial profile in silhouette. He views anatomical elements as singular organs, rather than organs that relate to the whole of a face or body. Context has been omitted, leaving only two sensory organs in black and blue space, and leaving the viewer to invent their own narrative to explain them. Perhaps we are prompted to associate an emotion with a color, or to think that the organs suggest facets of the figure's character. Either way, we are led to realize how many of our own assumptions we bring to the reading of images. It is an important insight that has implications for the way we look at all kinds of images. It reminds us of how we respond to cues in advertising, and of how all manner of connotations hover uncertainly around certain motifs. It also leads us to ask what great art consists of: is it a matter of vision and inspiration, or simply the skillful manipulation of codes.

In relation to my last assessment and drawing on ideas from Baldessari, I want to take a more literal and humorous that focuses more on definitions for next assignment. Many of Baldessari’s works incorpooate pre-existing images, and he often arranges them in such a way as to suggest a narrative. Baldessari uses various means he employs to distort his images - from cropping, to collaging them with unrelated images, to blocking out faces and objects with coloured dots - all force us to ask how and what the image is communicating.

Epigenetics, or What I Mean by “Reprogram Your Genes”

You can’t change your genes. But you can program them.

The modern world presents a number of problems for our genes. The world we’ve constructed over the last 50 years is not the environment in which our genetic code evolved. Our genes don’t ���expect” historically low magnesium levels in soil, spending all day indoors and all night staring into bright blue lights, earning your keep by sitting on your ass, getting your food delivered to your door, communicating with people primarily through strange scratchings that travel through the air. So when these novel environmental stimuli interact with our genetic code, we get disease and dysfunction.

The genes look bad viewed through a modern prism. They get “associated” with certain devastating health conditions. But really, if you were to restore the dietary, behavioral, and ambient environments under which those genes evolved, those genes wouldn’t look so bad anymore. They might even look great.

This is epigenetics: altering the programming language of your genes without altering the genes themselves.

Think of your genome as computer hardware. If you were to program your computer you wouldn’t be changing the hardware; you would be changing the software that tells the computer what to do. So just as we talk about reprogramming or programming a computer and don’t suggest that the hardware itself has changed we likewise can talk about reprogramming our genes without suggesting that the genes have changed.

Okay, so how does this play out in reality? Are there any good examples of epigenetics in humans?

One of the most striking cases of the environment altering gene expression was in an old study of a homogeneous population of Berbers from North Africa.1 Researchers studied desert nomads, mountain agrarians, and coastal urban residents. All were Berbers with low genetic variance. These people had very similar genetic patterns—were from the same basic genetic stock—but very different living situations.

The researchers analyzed the white blood cells of the group “to study the impact of the transition from traditional to urbanized lifestyles on the human immune system.” Berbers from urban environments had evidence of upregulated respiratory and immune genes, for example. Those same genes lay more “dormant” in nomadic and agrarian Berbers.

Overall, gene expression between the three groups varied by up to one-third based on geographic location and corresponding lifestyle. In their conclusion, the authors lay out the foundation of everything we talk about on this blog and in this space:

“Diseases due to genetic factors in urban populations may bear little resemblance to the impact of the same genetic factors in traditional societies.”

Did you get that?

“Bad genes” aren’t bad in traditional environments. The trick, of course, is figuring out what makes up the traditional environment and whether you can replicate it in the modern world.

Let’s look at a specific example: Tobacco.

Epigenetic Effects of Tobacco

Tobacco smoking “silences” the MTHFR gene via hypermethylation.2 Since MTHFR is the gene that constructs the proteins we use to activate thousands of other genes, suppressing MTHFR suppresses all those genes that rely on MTHFR-related proteins for activation. This disrupts numerous physiological systems and can set the stage for things like birth defects, cancer, and heart disease. It’s an epigenetic disaster, and it’s one reason why smoking increases the risk of so many different diseases.

Tobacco also induces hypermethylation (overactivation) of the GCLC gene which controls glutathione production. This causes a suppression of glutathione levels, an increase in oxidative stress, and initiation of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).3 GCLC is meant to deal with more moderate levels of toxins and irritants; these can actually have a beneficial hormetic effect that triggers higher levels of glutathione and less oxidative stress. In this case, tobacco represents a supranormal stimulus that turns a helpful gene harmful.

Or how about the genetics of obesity?

For the last decade, we’ve been inundated with the idea that obesity is caused by your genes. That some people are just destined to be be overweight. Sure enough, there are dozens of genes linked to an elevated risk of obesity and overweight.

Only genes can’t wholly explain the huge rise in obesity rates over the last hundred years because genes don’t change that fast. People used to be thin, and now they aren’t, and they have the same basic genetic profiles.

The real problem is that almost everyone in the western world exists in a shared food environment which is obesogenic. If you live in America, you’re awash in drive-thrus, Big Gulps, and inexpensive, delicious processed food that’s been engineered to interact with the pleasure centers in your brain. Most modern countries are in similar boats, and obesity rates are climbing across other nations as they adopt our food-ways and work habits. The genes aren’t changing (at least, not quick enough to account for the stats), the environment is changing.

Because the environment has changed for everyone, and most people never really question its obesogenic nature — they eat the pizza, they buy the processed food, they sit for eight hours a day at work and watch TV for four, they slog away on the treadmill—researchers looking for the genetic origins of obesity miss or discount the effect of environment. Almost everyone whose genetic data they’re examining is exposed to the same obesogenic food environment, and its ubiquity masks its effects. And because some people appear to have genetic profiles that protect them against obesity, researchers lay the blame at the feet of the genes.

The “epigenetics of obesity” is more accurate than the “genetics of obesity.”

Let’s see a few more examples.

Exercise Non-responders Epigenetics

Some people carry an “exercise non-responder” gene. by most counts, it’s 15% of the population. For these folks, doing standard “cardio” doesn’t do much. It may even impair insulin sensitivity, raise blood pressure, lower HDL, and leave cardiovascular fitness unchanged.4

If the idea of someone being an exercise “non-responder” sounds ridiculous and unbelievable, you’re right. It turns out that while regular cardio is neutral or even detrimental to this genetic profile, high-intensity training confers the normal benefits you’d expect from exercise5. I’d also guess that resistance training would work as well.

It’s not the genes that are faulty. It’s the (exercise) environment that’s faulty.

MTHFR Mutation Epigenetics

MTHFR mutations often impair folate absorption or conversion of folic acid into bioavailable folate, and they increase the requirements of others nutrients like choline and vitamin B12. In the modern food environment bereft of vegetation and nutrient-dense animal products, those mutations cause huge issues. In a traditional food environment full of vegetation and nutrient-dense animal products, or supplemental forms that mimic the active food forms, they aren’t as bad.

If you eat a lot of vegetables (a good source of folate), you weaken the link between MTHFR mutations and kidney cancer.6

If you have some of the common MTHFR mutations, you need to eat more dietary choline (eggs, liver).7 Doing so preserves methylation status.8

PUFA Metabolism Epigenetics

Your genes also affect fat metabolism. Some mutations in the FADS1 improve the ability of a person to elongate plant omega-3s into long-chained omega-3s like the fish fats EPA and DHA. In the context of a low-fish diet, they can still make the EPA and DHA they require to function as long as they eat some alpha-linolenic acid. This mutation is more common in populations with a long history of farming.

Another mutation impairs the ability of a person to elongate those plant fats into animal-type EPA and DHA; they need to eat a high-fish diet or supplement with fish oil to get the omega-3s their bodies need. That’s the boat I’m in—I fucntion best with a steady supply of long-chained omega-3s in my diet, probably because my recent ancestors ate a lot of seafood. This mutation is more common in populations with a shorter history of farming, or a longer history of reliance on seafood.

What’s the point of all this?

There are multiple future possible versions of you. It’s up to you to decide which version you will become. It’s up to you to make lifestyle choices that direct genes toward fat burning, muscle building, longevity and wellness, and away from fat storing, muscle wasting, disease and illness. The day-to-day choices we make—whether it’s what to pack for lunch, or hitting the snooze button and missing the gym, or even sneaking a cigarette break—don’t just impact us in the short-term (or even in ways that are immediately clear to us). That can make this scary, but it can also be empowering.

You can fix yourself. You can be better. Your genes can work better. Everyone, no matter how dire their circumstances or how “poor” the cards they were dealt were, can forge their own epigenetic destiny.

You can’t ignore the genes. They still matter. You have to figure out, of course, how your particular genes interact with diet, exercise, sleep, sun, nature, socializing, and every other lifestyle behavior. That’s the journey you’re on. That’s the journey we’re all on—it’s what this website and movement are about.

There’s a lot we don’t know about this topic. What if I don’t have a study I can refer to? What if I don’t sign up for a DNA analysis—am I out of luck?

Use your intuition when you don’t have a study or haven’t defined an epigenetic mechanism: Does it feel right? Does it feel wrong? Are you getting good results? How’s your energy? How’s your performance? Those subtle (or not-so-subtle) cues from our subconscious and direct feedback from our waking life are where true knowledge and wisdom lie. After all, your genes “want” you to do the right thing. If we’re cued into our subconscious and we’ve led a generally healthy way of life, we become more sensitive to those messages. Those flutters of doubt or little urges we get are the body’s way of telling us we’re headed for epigenetic ruin or success.

Listen to those, or at least consider and don’t ignore them.

Yahoo News: Body language expert reveals pivotal moment in Sarah Ristevski's 60 Minutes Interview

This week, almost a year since Borce Ristevski was sentenced for killing his wife Karen, his daughter Sarah Ristevski was interviewed by Liz Hayes on 60 Minutes Australia. Yahoo News contacted me for my analysis of Sarah’s body language and nonverbal behaviour. It’s almost a year since I worked with Yahoo News, (along with Allan Pease, Body Language Expert), giving them my analysis of Borce’s nonverbal behaviour: Body language experts reveal subtle details that showed Borce Ristevski lied about killing his wife. I’d first analysed the same video footage back in 2016, for my own website: What the media missed in the Karen Ristevski case: The single nonverbal cue that points towards deception.

What’s interesting is the same nonverbal cue which revealed Borce’s big lie–an eyelid flutter–was also observed many times during Sarah’s interview. However, in the context of the words that accompanied it, the behaviour did not indicate deception. That’s the thing about reading body language and nonverbal communication, it’s relevant within context and there isn’t a single behaviour which indicates deception. Instead, we use nonverbal behaviour to guide our understanding of changes in emotion from moment to moment. When we do this, we see the bigger picture and gain insight into thoughts and feelings, truth and lies.

When Sarah managed to hold her emotions together, she did a great job at concealing them with a poker face, especially in the top half of her face. Despite this, the interview was rich in microexpressions which are almost invisible to an untrained eye. The analysis below is by no means a full analysis–I took eighteen pages of notes while reviewing the interview! I, therefore, omitted many behaviours.

Coming from a background of training and education, when I submit work to the media I go beyond their initial request, providing them with a deeper understanding of nonverbal communication. That way, they understand the whole concept and I’m less likely to be misquoted. It also means they can use what’s most relevant and explain concepts in a way that works for their readers. Here’s what I submitted…

Sarah Ristevski Body Language and Nonverbal Communication Analysis

It was obvious from her body language that Sarah felt uncomfortable about participating in the interview, we could see this more generally in slightly raised shoulders and at times her hands clutched together. Under the circumstances, this is normal.

Despite mostly having a poker face and doing a good job at concealing her emotions, Sarah’s face leaked many microexpressions. These are involuntary facial expressions, or elements of facial expression, lasting no longer than half a second. Microexpressions leak true emotion, in real-time—emotion which is concealed or suppressed. Sometimes, these occur before the conscious brain has caught up with the subconscious and can give us an indication of a more blatant, upcoming expression of the same emotion.  

Most of the microexpressions observed expressed contempt, a slight movement where one side of the mouth is tensed, and fear, observed in the stretching of the whole mouth.

While microexpressions leak true emotion in real-time, we can’t be a hundred per cent accurate about where the emotion stems from. In the case of this interview, contempt could be sparked by a question asked by the host, Sarah’s own statement—a memory/emotion surrounding the subject matter, or towards herself.

In the scale of the interview, some expressions of contempt were more significant than others. One significant moment, was when Sarah explained her initial interaction with the police. This is crucial to understanding her behaviours (not giving a victim impact statement and supporting her father) which have been under scrutiny. At this point in the interview, this is what I observed:

Sarah’s eyes pointed downwards as she explained, “They didn’t take us seriously”, followed by an expression of contempt at the end of her statement. Eyes often point downwards during the emotion of sadness, sure enough, a microexpression of sadness followed as she said, “the guy that was there was quite rude”. This is the first time, at around ten minutes into the interview, that we see relevant movement in her brows and forehead. Her baseline behaviour until then was largely motionless in that area of the face. This is a huge deal for Sarah. 

As she continues, Sarah’s voice begins to crack, her sadness becomes audible and she can no longer conceal the emotion, “He said like, something along the lines of, she’s probably at the pokies”. At this point, Sarah’s eyes narrow. This facial movement stems from the emotion of anger. She gasps for breath and cries, her emotion flits between sadness and distress. 

She continues with, “My mum doesn’t play the pokies”, again we see anger in the narrowing of the eyes. Followed by a high blink rate, indicating a high level of stress and an eyelid flutter as she states, “It was hard and very stressful”. During the interview, Sarah’s eyelids fluttered a number of times. This occurs during moments of high emotional or cognitive load.

What we can take from this part of the interview is something we shouldn’t ignore. This is Sarah expressing genuine and extreme emotion as she recalls her initial interaction with the police. This is where she formed her opinion that they were the enemy. Whatever came later—whether or not her father, Boris Ristevski, continued to reinforce this 'them and us' situation—is another matter. 

First Impressions and Confirmation Bias

Research shows that first impressions are typically lasting because they are followed with confirmation bias, where we absorb and interpret the information that backs up our initial opinion. I have no doubt that Boris did help to reinforce this. But I have to ask—if Sarah had been treated differently by the police from the outset, building a level of trust, would this have played out differently?

Sarah expressed both fear and contempt later in the interview, while she talked about ‘two officers coming over’, ‘forensic people’ in the house and the media outside her house. She genuinely feels negative emotions towards ‘the enemy’. 

I agree with Laura Richards conclusion that Sarah felt compelled to protect her dad, due to the 'common enemy' and not wanting to give information to the police. However, I believe this stems from Sarah’s initial feelings about the police, which were then, most likely, reinforced by her father. 

Deceptive Behaviours 

While Sarah was mostly honest during her interview, with her behaviours reflecting her words, there were a few times where there was a mismatch—which raises a red flag. One of these occurrences was when she was asked whether her dad was telling her he was worried. She answered with, “We were both worried”. The mismatch in behaviour came with an initial head shake, which then turned into a nod. Nonverbal behaviour trumps words because our sentences are cognitively constructed and generally, our nonverbal behaviour stems from our subconscious. 

There was a similar mismatch after Sarah said, “I asked him [father] if he had anything to do with it”. Liz Hayes followed with, “Your father said what?”, and Sarah replied with, “No”, but at the same time she nodded her head. Something is amiss here. Did he instead say, “Yes”? Maybe she didn’t actually ask him. Or maybe he said, “No”, but deep inside she knows he did. 

Fear and Sadness

Throughout the interview, Sarah expressed sadness at the loss of her mum, this came in the form of concealed and obvious expressions of emotion. However, perhaps the most significant part of the interview for me, came at the end, when Sarah was asked, what she wants people to know about her. She replied by saying she is more than Sarah Ristevski, that she lost her mum—while expressing sadness, which then turned into combined fear and sadness, as she said her father is in jail.

The emotion of sadness stems from loss and while Sarah is still grieving for her mother, she is now also grieving for her father—and fears for the future. While she feels this, she is perhaps not ready to fully admit the reality of the situation.

Video Teleconferencing Technology (VTC): A new frontier in revolutionizing mental health and behavioral science?

A pressing problem in mental healthcare today is patients’ lack of accessibility to the treatments they need. People who live in remote locations are disproportionately affected by this silent epidemic, facing one too many miles of road between them and the nearest trauma center. The Rural Health Information Hub (RHIhub) reported that as of May 2017, 52.8 percent of Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas were in nonmetropolitan areas. In these rural, often poverty-stricken communities, distance acts an impenetrable barrier to treatment. Harsh financial realities, coupled with the scarcity of public transportation systems, prove to be a tough obstacle to face.

Luckily, the lack of access to mental health facilities may no longer be such a harrowing issue. It seems that technology once again comes to our aid, this time in the form of telemental health. Also known as telemedicine, telemental health relies on electronic communications and information technology to bridge the gap between patient and practitioner. It draws upon various practices such as clinical assessment, psychotherapy, psycho-educational interventions, and cognitive testing.

The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. With a network of over 100,000 healthcare professionals and industry leaders holding membership, the organization is devoted to improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare. On the first day of its 2016 Fall Forum conference, the ATA released a study that showed how the practice of telemedicine in mental healthcare is still egregious. Of the 429 people surveyed, 78 percent of the respondents had never used telemedicine services.  

However, one branch of telemental health, video teleconferencing technology (VTC), has gained momentum within the mental health community and is hailed by many as the solution to making treatment more accessible to poor, rural areas. Both convenient and economical, VTC is easy enough to understand. A patient in one location and a clinician in another each look at a computer monitor or television screen to see and hear each other in real time. The technology poses several benefits to business and has the potential to make great strides in mental healthcare. As a matter of fact, VTC is already being used in states with large rural areas.

The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) has implemented VTC at the Department’s Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) across the state. As a result, behavioral services reach 78 telehealth sites across the states. One CMHC in southern Oklahoma saw 180 new patients within the first three months they started using VTC.

The ODMHSAS has initiated a partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to deliver video-based psychological training to veterans throughout the state. It has also partnered with Indian Health Services (IHS), enabling clinicians to contact local behavioral health practitioners from local CMHSs through video. These clinicians can check to see if treatment is needed for patients showing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders without conducting a face-to-face consultation.  

Using VTC in mental health settings poses many benefits. The technology enables mental health professionals to administer clinically significant interventions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) education, symptom management plans, coping skills therapy, and stress management tactics. We may even see a focus on trauma-based interventions in the future.

According to the VA, 7 to 8 percent of the U.S. population will develop PTSD at some point in their lives: 4 percent of men and 10 percent of women. As many as 8 million U.S. adults have PTSD in a given year, and an estimated 44.7 million people today have the disorder. Combat veterans suffer from PTSD at an even higher rate. The RAND Center for Military Health Policy reported that 20 percent of veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from either major depression or PTSD.

Mental health facilities across the country have been working with veterans and have slowly begun implementing VTC in their practices. The Traumatic Stress Recovery Program of the VA Pacific Island Healthcare System successfully used VTC to provide group therapy to the Hawaiian Island Community Based Outpatient Clinics. A pilot study featured in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare reported participants in a group for PTSD psychoeducation and coping skills (veterans, clinic staff, and remote clinicians) found VTC treatment helpful. There was no significant difference in satisfaction or information retention between the VTC group and in-person control group.

A randomized clinical trial (RCT), appearing in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, measured the effectiveness of a VTC-based 12-session anger management group for rural combat veterans with PTSD. The Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology published a secondary analysis of the RCT, documenting that VTC doesn’t affect the group therapy process or the psychotherapist. The therapist can adhere to a manualized cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol, regardless of whether they are physically present. 

VTC has the potential to make great strides in mental healthcare, as well as in business practices. Because VTC eliminates the need for transportation, it dramatically cuts travel costs for both doctors and patients. Companies who use VTC no longer have to reimburse physicians for transportation expenses, and therefore save money. Moreover, VTC enables physicians to work more efficiently as they spend less time driving back and forth between patients. Entire towns may benefit from using the technology as well. Small clinics in rural communities can offer specialized interventions and psychiatric specialists that they normally wouldn’t be able to without using VTC. 

Of course, like with any other technology, VTC does have its drawbacks. The often exorbitant cost of equipment, maintenance, and fees can certainly be a hindrance to its implementation in medical settings. Also, not all equipment is created equal, as some tools are of much higher quality than are others. While lower-end equipment tends to be less expensive, it is also less reliable.

The quality of equipment affects the quality of care. Some VTC equipment, with the help of HD technology, projects exceptionally sharp images and auditory signals, but that is no guarantee of diagnostic accuracy. Despite the clarity of these images, clinicians can still struggle to detect nonverbal cues such as psychomotor agitation. They might find it even more challenging to pick up on subtle clues from their patients’ body language. Conversely, the patient may fail to recognize warmth and empathy on the clinician’s behalf, causing them to perceive the interaction as detached or indifferent.  

Diagnostic information is the first step to getting the necessary treatment on the journey to recovery, so the importance of diagnostic accuracy cannot be overstated – especially in the treatment of major anxiety disorders like PTSD. With the use of VTC, since the clinician isn’t physically present, they cannot address symptoms like the suicidal thoughts and aggression associated with chronic PTSD and other disorders. Although these sound like valid concerns, research shows that VTC doesn’t compromise diagnostic information or accuracy. The Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare reported that VTC results are comparable to those achieved from face-to-face diagnostic methods.  

Ultimately, the benefits of VTC greatly outweigh its shortcomings. We must consider its widespread implications for mental health, business, as well as its potential in criminal justice and law. Though VTC is mostly used by psychiatrists, it could be an asset for psychologists, social workers, and counselors. For instance, forensic psychologists could use VTC as a safer mechanism for criminal profiling, especially in settings like correctional facilities.

Mental healthcare professionals could use VTC to encourage more communication with their peers. The technology could prompt discussions over different diagnoses and treatment plans between clinicians in virtually any location without anybody even leaving their office. Medical professionals and scientists are constantly learning from each other. So, improved peer relations could do wonders for their respective fields.

Everyone has to confront their inner demons at some point, but none of us can imagine the true horrors of mental illnesses like PTSD without ever having experienced it. Only those who have suffered can tell us how it feels to be a prisoner of your own mind, trapped within the confines of your mental walls, and forced to relive your worst experiences at the slightest provocation. No one, military or civilian, should have to face a lifetime of these struggles simply because they cannot access treatment.

While the stigma surrounding mental illness may have begun to thaw, we have a long way to go before we truly break the ice. Fighting any mental illness is an uphill battle. VTC might just be a turning point, guiding those who suffer down the path toward recovery and the peace of mind they deserve.

The Tokyo Research results on cat language understanding sent a shockwave across the animal communication field. As a fellow trainer in this area, I can tell you that this was basically our version of the 16th-century Renaissance, happening right before our eyes.

Incredibly, they showed it right back. They understood our love.

We continued this process for other emotions, both positive and negative. We were slowly but steadily building a mutual shared language between cat and human beings with every new discovery we made.

Now the process wasn’t perfect, as cats are indeed limited by various vocal and mental features that humans typically have a wider range in.

For example, cats use about 20 voice sounds to communicate to us humans. This is a fairly small number compared to the hundreds or even thousands of unique vocal sounds that humans can produce. This restrained us in some ways and forced us to use body movements to get the point across.

And boy are they subtle at times. If you shift an octave up or down, you may accidentally tell your feline friend you’re ready to do battle with her!

How Does Covert Hypnosis Work?

I began with covert conditioning and have now developed this 18 year old technology. Covert Hypnosis is about changing people’s minds and behavior intentionally.

Don’t think for a moment that this is a spin on NLP.

NLP is not covert hypnosis. In fact, conversational hypnosis is not covert hypnosis. I developed Covert Hypnosis to share the science of human behavior, not a philosophy of mind.
