real question, I was watching something and they pointed out that because a show is free on youtube, it’s production quality cost is lower than say if it was on iqiyi or viki. do you agree with that?
🤔 I have no idea how the entertainment industry work. So, please don't kill me on this 🙃. But, personally, I don't think so.
Some of my favorite "free" productions on YT were amazing in terms of editing, cinematography and overall production. With other platforms, sometimes they do have "special clips" that are not available on YT (Iqiyi especially) but I don't necessarily think these platforms have better production quality than YT. Plus, their subs are atrocious 😑😑😑. If I am going to pay for a platform, I want top notch subtitles!!! Netflix is better than others (in terms of subs) but due to geographical restriction - most of the time, you won't get the series easily if is only on Netflix.
I also say "free" because even when it is available easily on YT, these series have sponsors, which help supplement the budget for the shows.
I personally think a top notch series is very much dependent on the right director(s), casting, script and editing/production team. You can get the best sponsors (i.e. heaps of money) and still a subpar production - and again, please don't kill me on this, but I think My Love Mix Up (MLMU) Thai version is a perfect example of this. I like GemFourth and the other cast members were also amazing. But the sponsors' products and the way these were incorporated to MLMU killed the joy for me while watching the show (I also have issue with how they colored the show, but that's me personally). I got the same feeling when I watched Vice Versa (VV), which aired at the same period as The Eclipse (TE). VV had the flashier budget while TE had peanuts in comparison. I like JimmySea and VV has an interesting script. However, I got irritated by the way the show incorporated their sponsored products. E.g during the proposal scene - didn't they use Lay chips? (and I couldn't help but feel that is a terrible way to use the product). I can't help compared it to TE (where they don't even have brand on the soda cans they used).
But when the production is done right, the add-on sponsor products can enhance the series (e.g. My School President - the way GemFourth playfully flirt with that fried chicken product? How cute!).
Some other productions from GMMTV that are "freely" available on YT, which I think are sleekly done include Last Twilight (even though I did not like the ending) & MLC by P'Aof, NVLM & Only Friends by P' Jojo (yes, the latter's ending may be divisive for people, but Jojo and his team always deliver in terms of cinematography/editing). For non-BLs, Enigma and Midnight Museum (the special effects!!) are great to watch. And for currently airing shows - Peaceful Property production (so far) has been on point.
And if we are looking beyond GMMTV - Gap The Series (as an example) is available on YT (and from my understanding, the production is nicely done!)

2023 Watch List pt2
Other list was getting annoyingly long for my liking so part two it is.
Not Me - I am not the biggest lover of Off's acting. A darling but, to me, not anywhere near as good as others at GMMTV. So I went into this with a lower expectation than some. I was incredibly pleasantly surprised. Essentially a story about a rough around the edges little anti-establishment found family, this drama had a lot to say and really managed to execute those messages without feeling preachy about it. Fantastic cast all round and I fell head first for DanYok. 4/5
Never Let Me Go (series and Our Skyy) - Umm. I feel like I felt like I knew what this was trying to do but that it got a bit lost at times. The script is kind of muddled. As ever JoJo pulls amazing performances out of a very young pup cast and its really those performances that make a confused script work. The cinematography is also stunning. Pond, for me, again suffers a little from a general stiffness, he gives some great emotion in this but, for me, has a lot of growing to do as an actor. It says something when I felt more strongly for Perth and Chimon who're barely in this. 3/5
The Warp Effect - Literally never seen anything as wholly sex positive and fun as this. The whole cast works amazingly and seeing kinks represented in a way where they weren't jokes was beautiful. Also, accurate female orgasm faces. Deserves a five for that alone. But seriously, don't skip this one. Queer, feminist and sex positive this deserves all the flowers. 5/5
The Jungle - This is stupid. I know it, you know it. Everyone who watched it knows it. But damn it was fun. Essentially a group of fuckboys, that routinely fight other fuckboys for treating girls badly, accidentally catch feelings for some cool women. Everything is nice too look at and the acting is great (especially Nanon, ohmygod) so honestly, strong rec. 3.5/5
Vice Versa (series and Our Skyy) - I get why people didn't warm too this, the ppl is honestly the worst I've ever seen and the concept is a little bizarre, but it just had something I really liked. JimmySea are an incredibly comfy feeling pairing, it's soothing to watch them together even when the script is a little daft and the ppl ridiculous. I'm rarely strongly moved by dramas but the scene where Puen is saying his goodbyes too Tun's parents just had me gone. Also just Jimmy in general does some beautiful, emotional work throughout. (Which makes the ppl issue even more annoying for me. They're too good to have to do stupid scenes about choco pie and lays potato chips.) 4/5
Cupids last wish - Ummm. This isn’t terrible but it’s also not that great. It just is. The script is so muddled that sometimes I thought I’d missed an episode, I hadn’t it’s just a confused script, and if the leads weren’t talented it wouldn’t really work at all. The period part is art but overall the representation of women in this is questionable at best and downright bad and cringe at worst. Watch for EarthMix and go watch Jan in Warp Effect where she’s allowed to be great and all the women are fully realised characters. 3.5/5
History 3: Trapped - This isn’t perfect, there’s some weird continuity stuff and things that didn’t feel fleshed out, but it’s A LOT of fun and the cast is fun. I really enjoyed the main pair and their back and forth was a lot of fun to watch. 3/5
Hidden Agenda - This wanted to be so many things that it just wasn’t. Joke was barely given a personality beyond ‘I love Zo’ and Zo was at times annoying but mostly just boring. Aou&Boom’s side characters were compelling and their relationship felt healthy and fully realised. I really can’t say the same for Joke & Zo. You’re scarcely shown any reason that they like one another and Joke just floats around looking mournful like he’s got trapped wind. Not one I’ll revisit. 2/5
My tooth your love - Ehhhh. First few episodes are nice. Dentist is a walking red flag who deserves to be told to fuck off and,as cute as the the wee baby gay side character is, I didn’t really appreciate the side romance between the 18 year old and the grown man that takes on a pseudo care giver role for him. (I know that’s a me dislike and he’s of age so it’s legal but, for me, it’s ick.) 2/5
Laws of Attraction - Every now and then a show comes along that shouldn't really work but 100% does and this is that show. Most everyone in this is a soap actor, you can tell, but that only adds to the beautiful camp absurdity of the thing. Charn is a deliciously villainous 'life is for profit' lawyer and Tinn is a soft, cosy, Labrador of a human. The untimely, heart breaking death of Tinn's niece brings the pair together to solve the mystery of how she died. There are lots of things you have to overlook with this but the central puzzles are good and intriguing and everyone's acting is good. (Watch this on dramacool if you're not in the states. The YouTube subs are absolute balls.) 4/5
My School President (series and Our Skyy) - I am older but I fall into the category of adult who was terrible at being a teen and, therefore, solidly enjoys good teen content and this is definitely that. Fourth & Gem do an excellent job as our leads and this show just serves you a consistent slice of fluffy delight. Their respective friend groups are also excellent and the Our Skyy concept gave me solidly genuine amusement. 4/5
Cutie Pie - Call me a hater but I'm just not a fan of Nu's 'brat' and Zee's 'brat tamer' dynamic. I think they're both probably better than this is but their fans LOVE that dynamic so I don't think they'll be escaping it anytime soon. This was just a bloated mess. 2/5
Love in the air - I am not a mame fan. I think she's a shit tier fanfic writer who needs some serious therapy. But when that women achieves casting excellence her shtick becomes pulpy and addictive. Everything about the plot is red flag central but you cant keep your eyes off. Personally I rated the FortPeat pairing higher than the BossNouel one but both had their charms. (I fast forward the gang rape scene because jesus fuck mame why.) 3/5
Wedding Plan - This was a thing that I watched. Boring, badly paced and didn't even get good spicy scenes because it was a partnership with GMMTV. Snooze fest. Unless you're a person who thinks Mame is actually a good writer, you won't get much from this. 1/5

I have a question and it's what are the feelings you're having about the movie because it seems pretty intense 👀
Okay so to be 100% honest, at first I didn't think it was going to be as moving and heartfelt as it is.
Not only does the cast give AMAZING PERFORMANCES, literally everyone is EXTREMELY GREAT, the cinematography and the music score are just. mind-blowing. And I'm not using that word lightly.
As someone who does NOT like current Batman stories, this film left me in love with the character. Honestly. YES, it's still violent and gritty like all modern hero movies are, but it is also HOPEFUL AND HEARTFELT. It truly is a love letter to Bruce / Batman and to Gotham, and to the relationship Bruce has with Gotham.
The script just gets who Batman is supposed to be. It gets Batman, it gets Gotham and the complicated relationship between the two. The undercurrent of hope and self realization is what makes it so moving and finally a good depiction of the character that's not all about being edgy.
Yes, it's 3 hours long. The good thing about it is that the movie isn't rushed and the plot has time to develop beautifully. It's also a detective story. You have Bruce following Riddler's clues and trying to solve the case. It's less about the brutish violence and more about the intellectual part. The fight scenes are sooo well choreographed. He's not invincible. He's not infallible. Just. JUST. EVERYONE WHO LIKES BATMAN EVEN A LITTLE SHOULD WATCH THIS FILM.

Why's Trap review
Trap is an interesting movie to me because it presents a mystery to me; not in the sense of what the narrative presents, but a mystery of figuring out what M. Night Shyamalan did wrong here. The movie seems to be emblematic of all of Shyamalan's strengths and weaknesses- strong suspense with sloppy directing, but what's odd is that both the strengths and weaknesses are so evident that they blend together to make it difficult to discern why the movie feels so off.
The premise is strong- loosely inspired by a real life event, a serial killer (played by Josh Hartnett) taking his daughter to a concert discovers that the FBI have tracked him there and blocked the exits, but don't know what he looks like, so he must figure out a way to escape with his daughter without alerting anyone. It makes for great suspense in that I found myself always wondering what Hartnett will do next and whether he will succeed, or how his actions will help his escape, if he does escape at all. Often times he outsmarts the authorities and employees in creative ways, but many times it can be attributed to those characters being outright stupid. Sometimes the movie knows it though, and explains away why those characters would give blatant clues to an untrustworthy individual, but there's only so many times they can try this before it becomes unbelievable, especially in the third act where it's clear they stopped trying to explain how he manages his acts in favor of providing an exciting climax. Still, with plenty of dumb tropes, having the protagonist be the villain of the story keeps it relatively unpredictable.
What got me doubting the film's quality was a few character interactions in the first act. There would be some very stilted conversations between the main cast and bit actors that felt like a first take, or like they were reading off a cue card. It was difficult to determine if this was an issue with the acting, directing, or writing, but I started to figure out the problem as it went on. Josh Hartnett's performance improved over time to the point where I was flat out amazed at how convincing he played a sociopath, reminiscent of James McAvoy's performance in Shyamalan's 'Split.' Evidently, Hartnett is a great actor, and other main actors like Alison Pill and Ariel Donoghue give convincing performances later on as well. The one actor who was genuinely poor was the concert's singer, who I initially thought was cast for her singing ability, only to realize she was M. Night's real life daughter, in a role way over her head, despite her solid singing ability. The script being lazy in certain scenes is a minor issue on top of the directing, which I believe is the main problem here. I think Shyamalan was so focused on getting a good "crazed" performance from Hartnett that he skipped out on reviewing the scenes in between, lazily allowing laughably bad dialogue to slip through.
What makes me think this is that the cinematography is perhaps the movie's strongest trait, often focused on Hartnett's character. There are so many shots that feel unique and draw attention to just the right spot on the screen without the need for words. For example, early on, there is a scene where a woman is washing her hands in the men's restroom, but attention is not directly called to it. Hartnett does not interact with her, nor does she make any odd motions to call attention to herself, but her position midway in the background, combined with her brightly colored clothing make her impossible to miss, despite the balanced subtlety, and get you wondering about her importance. Some conversations are shown with direct closeups of the characters' faces, with Hartnett's face being lit in such a way that the shadows color his eyes to appear fully black, and his smile to appear extravagantly eerie. Kudos to those involved with the camerawork.
By the end, I can't deny I was satisfied by the movie as a whole. The final 20 minutes or so feel like a copout to add to the movie's runtime, with nonsensical plot elements piling on top of each other, but everyone's acting, save for Saleka Shyamalan's, was top notch by the end. It's not a very serious film but might be fun if you're looking for a halfway decent suspense story with some ironic, and unironic entertainment value.

'If you keep up with the world of indie film, there's a good chance you've heard of the new British film, All of Us Strangers, directed by Andrew Haigh. It premiered at the Telluride Festival in August and has gone through an extremely limited release in both the United States and the United Kingdom. But if you do manage to hunt down a screening of this elusive film, you'll be met with a heartfelt queer story filled with emotion that masterfully blends the familiar with the other-worldly.
I first saw the trailer for All of Us Strangers, I remember rolling my eyes and thinking "great, another film about a queer couple where one is conflicted with their sexuality because of their upbringing, how predictable." That's a movie I've seen a thousand times over. But I was sorely mistaken because All of Us Strangers is a lot more unconventional than I ever could've expected. The story follows depressed, lonely screenwriter, Adam who gets into a relationship with his neighbor, Harry, which sounds mundane enough, until you see that Adam routinely has visions of himself and his deceased parents, whom he speaks with frequently throughout the film. We learn throughout the runtime that Adam was bullied for his sexuality when he was young, and never felt comfortable coming out to his parents despite the fact that they always seemed supportive of him. Unfortunately, Adam's father and mother were both killed in a car accident before he could ever express who he truly was to them. The film follows the progression of both Adam and Harry's relationship as well as Adam's continued visits to his parents in his mind. These two elements create a beautiful tale of both love and grief.
All of Us Strangers is not a particularly loud or exciting film. Its strength is derived from its sincerity and subtlety. The story is loosely based off a Japanese novel called Strangers from 1987 by Taichi Yamada. But despite the concrete roots in fiction, All of Us Strangers feels oddly biographical when you learn more about the director, Andrew Haigh. Haigh himself is an openly gay man, and like Adam, he wrote the script for the film in the midst of an intensely lonely time in his life, namely the first wave of Covid. It's refreshing to see a queer film where the main theme is not oppression or pain, they're present, but at its core, this is a film about being human and the emotions that come with it.
While the editing, cinematography, music, and directing are solid, the real standout in All of Us Strangers are the performances. It has an extremely small cast, consisting of only four people, Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy, and Jamie Bell, who all play their roles with such grace and humanity. As an Irish person, it's amazing to see a film lead by two Irish actors get so much praise. And although this is a film from the UK, and was directed by a British person, I can't help but feel like this is an intensely Irish movie, and it's not just because of the actors...
If you're Irish, you'll know that one of the most prominent aspects of the culture is being stoic. Never letting your emotions get to you, or more colloquially: "be a man." If you're feeling sad, drown your sorrows in whiskey, and if you happen to jump off a bridge, you're seen as a coward. This was brilliantly illustrated in the 2022 film, The Banshees of Inisherin by Martin McDonagh. All of Us Strangers shows a much softer side of "being a man," emotion, gentleness, loneliness, love, etc.
A scene that particularly stands out is when Adam comes out to his mother at the kitchen table during one of his memory trips. Her reaction is mixed and she has a lot of questions. She asks if people are still mean to him in the future, if he's able to get married and have kids, if he'll end up dying of disease. Her reaction is very complicated but you can tell it is one of love and concern. It's a reminder to viewers that being queer was not always a cakewalk, and still isn't for a lot of people. His mother is under the assumption that a gay life is a lonely one, and she asks him if that's the case. He hesitates because he clearly is a very lonely person, but he insists that's not the case because the fact that he's lonely has nothing to do with him being gay. It's a very human scene, and the fact that it takes place so casually over a cup of tea makes the film feel so much more grounded and humble. It's also hard not to get choked up at the scene where Adam says the same thing to his father, and explains all the hardships he went through growing up, which ends with them both in tears. These are all attempts to relive his childhood the way he would have wanted, with both of his parents alive, knowing who he truly was.
All of Us Strangers on the surface, is a queer love story, but if you look deeper you'll find a film about a man's battle to feel comfortable with himself, and looking towards the past and present to do this. It's remarkable about how a film about loneliness can make you feel so much less alone.
Without risking the chance of any spoilers, All of Us Strangers is a film jam packed with love, grief, and self discovery that is sure to bring a tear to your eye no matter who you are or where you come from.'

I watched TÁR (2022)
Get ready, cuz I loved this movie.
A successful Conductor's history of cruelty and abuse begins to catch up with her at the peak of her career.
Rarely, possibly never, is a movie perfect. But, Director Todd Field's TÁR, is as close as a film can get to perfect. From it's fantastic cast, led by a truly amazing performance from Cate Blanchett, to it's beautiful cinematography and absolutely tremendous script, TÁR is one of those movies that deserves to go down in history as one of the all time greatest.
A timely story sees Cate Blanchett playing a lead character which would traditionally be a male role. A person of true talent and passion who is also loathsomely selfish in her position of power and cruel in her relationships. A womanizing user of others with little sympathy for the people she abuses and the lives she destroys. Surely, Lydia Tár makes beautiful music....beautiful art, but she is despicable.
The whole film is a massive comment on society, power, abuse of power and even class, but also a pleading lesson in separating the art from the artist, as no person is just one thing. Even the worst of us often contributes something of value. As Lydia is discovered by us to be an awful person, we also hear her music, and what we hear is something undeniably touching, even as she pulls ideas from some of the darkest places of life.
A man in this role would have earned my immediate scorn, but with this role being taken by a woman, I find myself more apt to at least try and sympathize with such an obvious villain. I was desperate for her to feel something outside herself and her music. Desperate for her to be more than damaging.
Only in her interactions with her adoptive daughter do we see something of a break in her coldness, but even in that relationship there is a personal fear in Lydia that she may allow a break from her self-perceived perfection.
She does eventually self-reflect, but while we bare witness, we don't truly understand her feelings as her true feelings are only expressed in her music and can never be translated to us.
TÁR is that rare film that overflows with its greatness. It's script is gorgeously paced and the dialogue (Though difficult at times for someone like myself, not versed heavily in orchestral music and history) is expertly worded and delivered with the kind of honesty from Cate Blanchett that makes this more than a just a character, but a real human being.
I have nothing but praise for this film, and nothing but respect for everyone involved. There is tons more I want to say, but that would require diving into almost every moment.

The Dead Zone (1983) Review
Well, my life got a little messy, but now I’m gonna finish reviewing these October horror marathon movies. Even if it kills me, god dammit. Next up, David Cronenberg’s 1983 adaption of The Dead Zone by Stephen King.
Before the marathon I had only seen 1 Cronenberg movie, that being Crash. Fucking weird movie, but that’s not what we’re talking about. I’m sure most people still know who Cronenberg is; he made The Fly, which I also watched for the marathon, and he’s known for kickass body horror… which this movie contains almost none of. But it’s still amazing.
The script was written by Jeffrey Boam, who wrote Lethal Weapon 2 and 3, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It stars MOTHERFUCKING CHRISTOPHER WALKEN as the main character Johnny, and Martin Sheen plays a guy who wants to be president. I can’t get over this, because the idea of Martin Sheen being president is fucking terrifying.
Johnny has a wonderful life, with a fulfilling job as teacher and a girlfriend named Sarah, but then gets in a serious car accident and enters a coma. He wakes up 5 years later, has to go through physical therapy to regain the use of his legs, and finds out Sarah has a husband. To top it off, he now sometimes sees sudden visions of peoples’ past or future when he touches them… because it’s Stephen King. Definitely more of a thriller, but it has at least one pretty gory moment.
This wonderful plot results in a meaningful story about lost hope and self-discovery. I can’t help but make the connection to Taxi Driver, especially with Martin Sheen’s character in the mix. I love how Johnny and Sarah’s relationship is handled; Johnny is heartbroken but doesn’t blame her, and they’re both written very realistically overall.
All the acting is great, but Christopher Walken is completely unstoppable. He’s one of the greatest actors ever born, and he’s possibly at his BEST here. Martin Sheen also does a fantastic job. I mean, I love him as an actor, he’s just batshit crazy. Which turned out to be perfect casting for his character. There’s a scene involving him near the end that’s one of the WILDEST fucking things I’ve ever seen, and I was laughing my ass off the whole time.
The cinematography is great, and the editing when Johnny has his visions is jaw-dropping. It’s sudden, and really makes you feel like you’ve been randomly transported to a different space and time.
The soundtrack was made by Michael Kamen, who scored so many movies it’s kind of ridiculous, including Lethal Weapon 1 2 and 3, The Iron Giant, 101 Dalmatians, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It’s satisfyingly haunting. 4.5/5

Hi Gina, so I was kinda right, and the cinematographer's name is Matthew Libatique, he's a big deal in the industry, he was the cinematographer for requiem for a dream, the black swan, mother, iron man, the fountain, a star is born, and a whole lot of other really famous oscar wining or nominated movies, and he's been nominated himself to an oscar and has won a lot of awards (well deserved).
He's famous for always working with Darren Aronofsky, (They seem to come as a duo).
Olivia did well hiring him because there is no way this movie is not gonna have a beautiful style, this guys is a heavy weight. He's been amazing at his job for longer than she's even been an actress.
So if anyone is responsible for a beautiful film, with a rich visual style and great atmosphere, is Matthew Libatique (along with the sound designer for immersiviness and atmosphere, but i haven't researched yet who that is).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi sugar. Thank you for all of this. And yes, from day one people were talking about how good this film looked. Matthew Libatique is crazy talented (my friend who went to the screening last year said the cinematography was the best part of the movie). She hired Arianne Phillips to do the costumes—she’s been nominated for an Oscar multiple times, and does a ton of high fashion editorial work. It sounds like the composer is great, too. I don’t know who did the set design, but it’s clear from the trailer that they know what they’re doing.
I said the other day that Olivia has proven she can spot talent (and can obviously talk a great game because she’s not only landed the hottest spec script in town, she also managed to get a huge financial deal and hired a great cast and crew).
However, there were numerous rumors from set that made it sound like Olivia herself wasn’t up to the job. These included that Libatique basically had to take over the directing, that she and Florence fought because Flo felt like she was “directing herself”, that the more experienced actors had to take over the directing role at times, and that Olivia was unprofessional on set (arriving late, making inappropriate sexual comments, being rude to crew etc). Obviously these are rumors, but there were so many floating around about what a terrible atmosphere there was on set (because of her) that I can’t believe all of them were made up.
The thing that’s super frustrating is that this movie is shaping up to be a perfect representation of Olivia herself: looks real pretty on the outside (and at first glance), but zero substance and an absolute mess when you dig deeper.
And given how easily fooled people are by that set up, I question how many will notice how lacking the movie is in terms of the script and the film’s direction.

I’m saying this because Florence Pugh, Gemma Chan, Chris Pine , David Dawson, Emma Corrin, Kiki Layne and The older actors in my policeman Linus Roache, Gina McKee, And Rupert Everett all have one thing in common, they are all actors who are classically trained. They all want to drama school they are all season trained actors. And they have all been in more than 10 films and television shows. Of course Harry’s not going to be very good especially when his costars are all trained and have been doing this much longer than he has so he’s already held up to a higher standard because we all know that these people can act but we don’t know that about Harry. I remember and one of his Howard Stern interview Harry said something to the effect of an acting coach told him that he should say his lines like he saying them for the first time and not practice too much and all I have to say is he needs a new acting coach and after reading some of these reviews he needs some acting lessons. Even in the new my policeman trailer there’s somethings so stiff about him like he’s very just the same. He looks like he’s between the same emotion even though he shouldn’t be. Like you can’t tell if he’s sad, or upset, or mad, devastated because it’s all the same face
The flies with don’t worry darling were Olivia as a director, the script and hairy. Everything else about this movie was great the rest of the actors performance is the cinematography everything else was fantastic. The only bad parts of this movie were Olivia Wilde as the Director, The script and Harry’s performance. The only reason he’s not getting as much flack is because he’s Harry styles but also there are other things that were more pressing about this movie that were bad. Olivia is directing in the script or two of the thing for people noted about this movie that we’re just not very good. So Harry’s performance isn’t a thing that’s on peoples mind very much and it wasn’t the only bad thing about the film. My policeman for the people have read the book is a very good book. I’m sure the screenplay is amazing too, the Director is great, and all of the actors casted in this movie are great. For the people who have seen my policeman already they all rave about how amazing the film is but we all heard that we don’t worry darling and look what happened. People said Harry was great and When the movie actually came out he wasn’t. there are so many factors about don’t worry darling that Harry wasn’t the main focus and his performance being bad wasn’t the main focus of the critics. But with my policeman we all know that the movie is going to be great but even in the trailer he still looks very stiff. If the only thing bad about Policeman is Harry’s performance that he’s fucked. That’s the issue. All of his costars and all of the movies that he’s been in so far are all actors who are classically trained and have been in the industry and who have done far more than him in their entire careers. That’s the problem. Olivia said that she casted Harry because he was a performer and didn’t have baggage and that was her first mistake. Casting someone with little acting expertise in a Alastair cast was setting him up for failure. Also the fact That he in Florence didn’t have the best chemistry in the movie shows that they didn’t do a chemistry read or a screen test to show if they were actually going to be good together on the screen and we all know that hairy didn’t audition for this movie. If Olivia was a serious directors who won of this movie to do but she would have casted and after with experience and training. cast of Harry for the name and for her own selfish reasons and that’s why everything is starting to fall apart for her now. She had too much of an ego and it’s all biting her in the ass because this movie sucks and the stunt with Harries going to be over very soon and what is she going to be left with. Not to say that Olivia Wilde won’t work again but no one‘s gonna trust her with a $20 million budget again if this movie sucks. She’s gonna have to make her way and try to gain back the trust of studios. This flop will reflect badly on her and it won’t reflect badly on other female directors it’s only going to reflect badly on her. No one’s gonna trust her with such a huge budget and I doubt WB will wanna work with her again. This movie did more harm to both of their careers than good

Is it just me, or is there something kinda off about s9? There have been some really great episodes (ep1, ep3, ep5), but I get the feeling there's been some behind-the-scenes drama that’s caused everything to feel way more haphazard. Like, why has the cast been changing so much between episodes? Even Mrs McCarthy has been absent. Is it a Covid issue? Scheduling problems? It's as though everything (editing, cinematography, casting, even the writing on some episodes) has been done in a hurry.
This is an interesting comment because I see where you coming from and I *kind* of agree a little but at the same time I don't.
There've been a few episodes that I haven't been crazy about, but I'm actually for the most part preferring S9 to S8 (and to a S4 and S6 which are the 2 weakest imo).
(Specifically I feel like the jury's still out for me on 9x05, since there were things I adored, things that were meh, and a few things that I'm going to have to wait until 9x10 to decide about. )
As to why things seem different and/or why so much of the cast seems to change around there a couple different issues/explanations as to why things are a little odd this time around.
Series 9 was supposed to film in 2020 but then COVID happened. And notably lockdown was at its peak right around the time, they were probably going to start pre-production (casting, approving script drafts, coordinating people's schedules and filming locations). It's very likely that at least a few planned episodes were scrapped and/or significantly rewritten for any number of reasons connected to COVID, including but not limited to 1) not being able to film in certain locations at certain times due to COVID and/or other restrictions. 2) having to significantly rework planned material to better comply with safety guidelines (ex: smaller casts, fewer extras, smaller crew, maintaining physical distancing when possible).
The cast has always been very talented and very popular, so it's unsurprising that scheduling them has been difficult. John Light and Nancy in particular do a LOT of live theatre, which is always especially tricky to schedule around. Additionally, a bunch of the cast signed on to some unexpected new projects during the 2020 hiatus. I know Emer did a lot of writing and has 2 other shows that she's working on--one of which she helped create and has a good chunk of creative control with. I believe Nancy Carroll also filmed a new show as well and so that's another challenge in her schedule.
As to why this series has had less Mrs. M in particular, Sorcha Cusack is in her seventies. Like, She's amazing and an international treasure but like...she is getting up there. I've always gotten the impression that the cast and crew who make Fr. Brown genuinely care about each other, and so I can see them reducing Mrs. M's role this season (maybe at her request so she can take a well deserved break or if COVID cases are spiking and they want to keep her safe since she is more vulnerable than the others.
Nine seasons is a reasonably long run by any standards--and even more so for a UK show. (According to the wiki, it's the 2nd longest daytime show not counting soap operas...which is crazy to think about). I would not be surprised if Series 10 (assuming we get it) is the last as I am sure that Mark Williams (and to a lesser extent Sorcha Cusack) will eventually want to be able to work on other projects...and well, you can't have Fr. Brown without Father Brown.
I feel like this season in particular is kind of laying the groundwork for the end (which is sad ofc but in a tender bittersweet way) and so it makes more sense for them to try to revisit as many characters and stories as possible (Kalon callback of all things?) and plant seeds for future journeys for certain characters (Felicia/Flambeau and/or Flamdemption; more characterization/hints of promotion for Goodfellow... which is overdue imo) and well... just a general sense of life moving on in general (like we are *finally* going to see 1954 apparently...things are changing) and unfortunately, that can also mean characters moving on and being less present.
And ironically, that's kind of what I've really loved about S9. I mean in a perfect world, every episode would have Fr. B, Mrs. M, Lady F, Sid, Bunty, Mallory, Valentine, Sullivan, Goodfellow, and Flambeau--and all of them would have a ton of really great lines and moments...but that's unfortunately just not the realistic.
So the best compromise imo is to try and split them up and make the most of the characters who are in each given episode. I feel like Mrs. M had a really good showcase this year in 9x02, Sid's writing has been great for the episodes that he appears in, Mallory and Goodfellow have much more to *do* besides just try (and fail) to solve the case.
Honestly, I'd rather have the characters we have be used really effectively when they are used...than just have them be there and not do much. And for the most part, I think that they have, and if S10 (or even S9) does end up being the last season, I think we're still ending in a pretty good place. Others can and have done much worse with their final seasons.

Malcolm and Marie live blog
I don't usually do liveblogs for movies but yea.
Spoilers ahead!!
I love that its modern timed but very 70s stylized.
A tune indeed.
When you are high and drunk on success and
How the white critic reacts is why I feel like gatekeeping my scripts. At the same time some things I do make are about race or involve.
Marie sitting on the patio smoking is a mood whenever men are talking.
So he's pretentious and unaware.
Whoever chose the music for this, I feel like we would be Spotify mutuals.
Can this nigga stop pacing.
Also can he stop talking;
Tumblr media
Marie is so tired and unimpressed.
Also little booties matter and are to be bitten.
Oooo the tension and the jazz.
Title Card over mac and cheese.
Shitty boxes mac and cheese but still mac and cheese.
Tbh i always wonder if spouses/significant others get upset when their spouses don't acknowledge them during speeches.
John sounds so much like his dad but I really hope his acting style differs from his dad a lot.
Guilty confession?
He did not profit off of his partners backstory and then not even acknowledge her.....I.....
Tumblr media
If that ever happened to me catch me cussing my partner out during the beginning credits, the end credits, in the car, and at home.
GASLIGHTER!
The way I'm excited for Zendaya to give me some, oooo can she work with Regina King. Please on my knees I pray.
Um no that's not your job to coddle your lead.
He's a dick and the type of dick who makes himself look like a good person around other people.
If Sam Levinson is trying to make his viewers more of misandrist, it's working.
I feel like Marie has her flaws probably a lot of them and we will surely see as this continues, but Malcolm needs to learn how to apologize sincerely.
70s vibes! 70s vibes!
Them kissing and talking about criticism and dreams makes me miss a partner. A partner that I've had and haven't had.
Women really are behind every great man.
Yea sir you fucked a happy moment.
Oh visual allegories for looking in from the outside and cat and mouse chasing and looking from the outside in.
She's saying she doesn't feel noticed by you.
Tumblr media
Gas lighter :0 he called her an emotional support dog, bruh.
I would LOVE to co-write or take a writing class held by Sam Levinson. The fights i write are very much in this same realm of reflection and anger and monologue.
Sam.....sam.....are all the sides inside of you doing okay sir?
The ugly side of dating and being in a relationship with someone who struggles with their own demons.
Honestly I could close my eyes and listen to this script being read without seeing these characters visually. Just close my eyes and get a sense of these characters like it was a radio story.
Oh. Oh this is a new wheelhouse of Zendaya acting; a different voice is like breaking through here and her expressions aren't the same we are used to. You can literally hear another character in there....hmm.
Mans is outside really fighting with his invisible demons lmfao.
Selfish ass, how after everything she said you came out of it thinking about your own craft and self instead of how you hurt her.
So she's conditional.
Me: did sam (a white man) say nigga this many times in his script or are the actors adding their own inflections. Not just the lingo used but the topic of race and directing etc. being written by a white writer about black characters is always gonna be a critique when you're writer is a white person.
Alexa play Broken Girls by Saba
He is so hurtful.
A clown nigga a clown look in the fucking mirror you bozo head ass looking like you need some Mehron clown white and a size 16 in clown shoes.
Tumblr media
John is doing a really swell performance and reading of these lines.
He is reading her for her insecurities by bringing up his experiences with other women and that.....is yikes.
Arguments can get messy like this in real life but it takes a lot of maturity and control to either not let it get to this point or have a healthy conversation afterwards.
This film is really shot on some very crisp lenses.
They sitting there like 🚬🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️.
Leftover Mac and Cheese and unfinished cigarettes.
The nyt etc. pay walls are so annoying, but there is a work around look at the articles on incognito or add a period at the end of the url.
He sounds like his daddy so much here, weird, this is the only part I'm eh on the dialogue it feels real but a bit out of pace in how they are bouncing off one another.
Nail scissors? So the end is not the only part he based off of Marie. 🙄
ITS A GOOD REVIEW YOU DINGUS but also its a full review they are going to critique things. She isn't wrong though he did profit off of a woman's story that was not his own to profit from.
Yes Malcolm because unfortunately all marginalized people look through a lens of life that is inherently political because of the world they live in.
He is so mad and upset and had a lot on his chest. But I think he Malcolm and Sam are talking about something thats an issue and a non issue. Being critiqued for you art is hard but also Malcolm is not super self aware. He's like a stand in figure of for example rich depop sellers who wanna be oppressed so badly they yell at others instead of examining their own personal behaviors and ethics.
Oh Marie, when you know the spark is gone and you pick fights because.
He ain't even ask her to read?
One critic I have for most of hollywood actors is they learn their cry and that is it. A change from this is Margot Robbie, I adore her fluctuations of crying being similar but the crying is carried differently for each character. If I had to say any actor that does a cry scene amazing its this woman right here (Amy Adams)
Tumblr media
You stole her story from her and gave it away, she has a right to be upset and angry and a rubber band ball of emotions.
Citizen Kane, not the cinematography, but the story is it even that good? (Unpopular opinion but meh, maybe in my rewatch it will be better.)
But that is what people want authenticity and whatever authenticity means to them. What is real for one is false for another.
To be honest look at the criticism of Euphoria, well earned, but a lot of people were like this isn't real even though he literally wrote about his own life. People said it was inauthentic like....wtf.
Ahh the smoking is just a habit, he quit and she didn't.
CAST ZENDAYA IN A HORROR MOVIE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING. Get Lupita and Zendaya and some more black actors preferably less known ones in a horror movie. One with a interesting script and story, directed by Regina King. Please and thankyou.
I love Marie yep that was amazing.
Behind every great man is a greater woman, one that deserves her credit for how she has stood behind. I wonder the stories of those women, what they have sacrificed or not sacrificed. Their thoughts and feelings when the world is surrounding their partner and views them as a plus one. (I'd write a short script about this but I think do I have the time, can I, or am I equipped ?)
He is a shitty person for bringing up his exes, like she even said I don't wanna know any of that.
Imagine being on anti depressents and rarely having a sex drive and then when you do your partner starts talking about their exes and tearing you apart for all your faults.
I love when you see peaks of Zendaya's cadence in roles.
Tension, what if's and he didn't even bring her up in his speech.
Marie to herself and the audience:
Tumblr media
He is not afraid that he will loose her but as my character says in my unreleased story, "i can't wait til you give me a fucking reason to leave your ass." Malcolm expects everything in order for not even doing the bare minimum and she is only asking him for something as simple as consideration. She just wants him to be considerate. He wants to get married and considers their relationship like rolling down a hill at full speed and he cannot apologize, he cannot be considerate, and he cannot admit his wrongs. He can only offer her I love yous that he probably does mean but he does not back up outside of what he's done for her in the past. The past which was more of her experience than his and he sees his part in it as a burden. He doesn't use his own vantage point of the past to further his career he uses her. He does all of these things without a real apology or thankyou because he is not afraid to loose her.
The restrictions of quarantine and the panorama have made Sam's writing very no frills. I wonder how other films from other directors and writers that are filmed in small contained crews like this will be structured. But this was a very good movie gonna add to my letter box 3.3-3.5
Oh shit this is my song,
Tumblr media
Ratings/overall thoughts:
Script is like a C+, B- : I could go into my heavier big brain thoughts on the script but I don't feel like it. You catch hints of it above it centers conversation on race and privilege, mainly the writers and questions i have that won't be answered but Sam did make me grow disdain for Malcolm over a short time. Which is sometimes hard to do because im one sympathetic person but the sympathy i have for Malcolm is at 0. Maybe a 2 at some scenes but then it quickly goes back to 0. Some parts of the dialogue miss the mark or hit the are off balanced. While some of it like Malcolm's bathroom speech albeit mean is really strong or their conversation when he comes back from peeing really shines for me.
Performances: B+ to A- because they carried the script further than it could of gone with less talented actors. The monologues do well to showcase their current skill levels which are already high af and leave room for anticipation in where these actors go next.
Zendaya holding a knife: A+ with a gold star. That switch on and off and on is delectable.
John being a shitty boyfriend but following Marie like a lost puppy: B+ with a good job written at the bottom of the paper, Malcolm being nervous a frantic dialed up with more realistic nervousness would have sold me completely on Malcolm's anxious waiting.
Cinematography: A and a participation award.
The mac and cheese: A+ for the easy mac. Wish it was like Annie's or Velveeta.
Cigarettes: Participation award and their picture hung up for student of the month. Why the grill lighter? Everytime Malcolm opened up his mouth Marie was like sparks fly.
The music: A++ with a prize. Whoever picked the music probably makes good Spotify playlists.
