Summary: You try to convince your best friend to go on a long road trip with you. Pairing: Bucky x Female Reader Word Count: 694 (a drabble, really) Warnings: Fluff. ALL fluff. A/N: This is for @the-slumberparty June Monthly Challenge: Summer Vibes. I picked a tent (can the VW Bus be considered a tent?) and the Road setting. I don't know if I should continue with the story. I mean, I have some ideas, but I don't think there's an actual plot...lol. Edit: It's decided...it's now a series...I hope y'all are happy!

The one thing you wanted to do before you started your new job was to visit the national parks in your state. You graduated with honors and had multiple job offers in the tech industry because of the algorithm you created for your senior project.

Tech careers were unpredictable and oftentimes fleeting. But you were confident that your innovative program would help kick-start your career and cement your position in the company that you chose for a long while.

That’s why you wanted to go out and travel. See nature! Just before you commit to a desk and computer for the rest of your foreseeable future.

“Do you know how big California is?” Bucky asked you agitated.

“Yes, I do,” you answered back with a cheeky grin.

“California has the greatest number of national parks!” he pointed at the map.

“Yes. Nine! And that doesn’t include the monuments and the trails and the memorials-”

“No!”

“Well, I’m not asking for your permission.”

“I still say, ‘no.’”

“I’ll go with or without you, Buck. I just thought you should know my plan.”

“Do you know how dangerous it is out there? Especially if you’re alone.”

“I can take care of myself. I did take that self-defense class for a couple of months,” you reasoned.

“Why can’t you go somewhere that has- Look, Nevada! Nevada has one national park. The Great Basin. And hey…we could even hit up Vegas while we’re there!” Bucky pointed at the map.

“Oh, ya cuz I would really be safe from creep-o’s in Vegas!” you rolled your eyes at your best friend.

“Ok. What about Hawaii? Hawaii has two national parks! And it’s HA-WA-II!”

“Do you know how much that plane ticket would cost? I haven’t started my job yet. Besides, who would watch Smokey while I was away?”

“You’re bringing the dog?!”

“Of course, I’m bringing the dog! Smokey goes where I go.” And as if he was called, your large greyhound came over licking your hand under the table. “We’re gonna have so much fun in our Bus-Bus, aren’t we, Smokey?!”

“And another thing?! How sure are you that the rusted piece of metal you call a car will actually take you around California? You’d probably break down before you get south of Oakland!”

“I had my mechanic look at it! Sid said it was in good shape! Plus I can call a tow if I need to.”

Bucky just looked at you defeated. He knew there was no convincing you out of this hair-brained plan of yours. You had always been a person to stick to your guns as soon as you planned it out. ‘No Regrets,’ you had always said.

No Regrets, Bucky repeated in his head trying to decide what to do. Nine parks! Nine! It would take you a month and a half to finish that round trip. And that’s only if you decided to stay at each park for a couple of nights, not the week you were planning.

“All right. All right. I’ll go with you.” Bucky relented, placing his head in his hands.

“I didn’t ask you to, Buck,” you chuckled, trying to hide the relief on your face.

“Bullshit! You knew I was going with you the moment you told me about it.” He called out your bluff. You shrieked and held your arms out to Bucky’s neck, embracing him in a tight hug.

“You and I are gonna have so much fun! You’re not gonna regret this.”

“Ya, ya, ya.” Bucky relished in your warm embrace. You smelled like sun-kissed fruit on a lazy afternoon. You felt like a cool breeze that just wafted into his life unexpectedly and decided to stay. Erupting his life into chaos.

You pulled away looking into his deep blue eyes. He narrowed them as if he saw something in you that he had never seen before.

“Ok, we leave right after graduation! And you can’t take it back now Barnes. You’re in this with me till the end!” You smiled at him. Your cheeks were puffy and red, carrying a dimple that he wanted to caress.

“Lord, help me.” He whispered under his breath.

Wednesday 5th July 2023

Overslept but made it to Downtown Banff to investigate tours. We wanted to visit the Gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain. In all naivety we trotted along to the ticket booking office at one of the rather posh hotels in Downtown expecting to book for a convenient time today. I was not expecting them to give me the single option of 6.50pm tomorrow. Then we received a barrage of telephone numbers which turned out to be a price! There was no choice so the flexible friend changed hands. Then warming to this game the bloke said what about Lake Louise? Now this is a problem. We discovered this yesterday that access is very difficult. Its neighbour Lake Moraine already has a complete ban on private cars. I can see the same happening for Louise. All slots on the regular town buses are booked for days ahead. You can queue but it takes hours to get a lift. So I listened again to the telephone numbers and partially opted for a pickup tour tomorrow early. Book the gondola and I'll go collude with my wife about the Lake Louise thing. Oh he said, you like to canoe? I can arrange that. COLLUDE I said, COLLUDE, my canoeing days are definitely over.

Well we figured if we want to get to the place it will have to be the flexible friend again. So we are booked for the am.

With today now to ourselves we set off along the Bow River to view the Bow Falls. We set out along the path and the all pervading scent on the breeze was pine as strong as furniture polish, but a man passed by and the breeze changed to pure cannabis. We have to get out of here before we get a liking for it. Bow Falls was spectacular with mountains as backdrop and a level change of several meters along the full width of the river causing a thunderous roar before calming again on a turn the map referred to as Surprise Corner.

The walk continued in the other direction towards 'Cave and Basin'. In 1883 William McCardell, brother Tom and Frank McCabe following work on the Canadian Pacific went prospecting in this area and came across holes in the ground and a hot sulphur spring. The place smelt of a school chemistry laboratory. After many battles for ownership and exploitation the place was seen to be of great importance and in 1885 Parliament stepped in making it Canada's first National Park. The government then proceeded in 1887 to develop the place themselves by building a bathhouse. Cures for all sorts of ailments were envisioned. Personally the thought of sitting in hot sulphuric water would not be my idea spending my time off from the daily toil.

The original name for Banff was Siding 29 whilst it was purely a construction site for the Canadian Pacific railway. Clearly this name lacked a little in gravitas, so it was renamed in 1884 after the Scottish birthplace of George Stephen, the President of the railway. On arrival, first impressions of Banff were a little mixed. After the places we had seen on route, Banff was busy crowded and commercialised. Today, all seems different. It is a very pleasing manicured, clean, timbered Alpine style town. The trouble is that is likely to be the opinion also of the other six million people here. If all tourists were to be sucked up by a giant vacuum cleaner the remaining population would be 9,656. Downtown's endless rows of gift shops, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, ice cream parlours gives way seemlessly to smart expensive hotels and apartments. This is one smart tourist operation which exists simply because of the eye boggling scenery of mountains of epic proportions, azure blue rivers, lakes, waterfalls and deep emerald pine forests. Everywhere you look you are blown away with the beauty of this place and if you have to share it with all these other people then I guess, so be it. When the sun shines, they can be forgiven for being there as well. It was interesting that the further we walked from the centre, the fewer people we met. Instead we met two Elk in a clearing, two red squirrels and a Columbian Ground Squirrel. We were told later that Elk can charge at you.

Great day. Thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. We even enjoyed a flat white and a local SB tonight as well.

ps. We saw a man dressed in a kilt today. I didn't think it was customary though to wear it as a mini skirt with black tights! He will be spoken to by the Clan leader no doubt!

Seascape: The State of Our Oceans! The Hidden Underwater Forests That Could Help Tackle The Climate Crisis

Kelp absorbs carbon dioxide and has high nutritional value, but it is under threat from rising temperatures, pollution and invasive species

Bubbles stream furiously behind Frank Hurd as he gently parts the curtains of giant kelp. Green and gold ribbons reach upwards through the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean towards the sun.

Hurd, a marine biologist with environmental organisation the Nature Conservancy, is diving in a kelp forest off Anacapa Island, one of the protected rocky volcanic islets that form the Channel Islands national park, an archipelago off the coast of southern California.

This thick, healthy kelp – a type of seaweed – forms a small part of underwater forests that blanket the coastline of nearly every continent. Some are relatively well-studied, including the Great African Sea Forest, a rich stretch of giant bamboo kelp spreading north from Cape Town to the Namibian coastline that was the setting for the film My Octopus Teacher; and the Great Southern Reef, a giant kelp forest hugging Australia’s southern coastline. But many more of these forests are unnamed and unknown – hidden underwater.

Despite being one of the fastest growing plants on Earth, kelp has historically been difficult to map because of the difficulties of measuring ocean depths with satellites. However, research published in September found that seaweed forests are far more extensive than previously realised.

An international group of scientists from eight countries, led by Dr Albert Pessarrodona from the University of Western Australia, manually sifted through hundreds of studies – including local plant data records, online repositories and citizen science initiatives – to model the global distribution of ocean forests. They found that underwater forests cover between 6m and 7.2m sq km – an area comparable to the Amazon rainforest basin and twice the size of India.

Seaweed forests can act as a vital buffer against the climate crisis, absorbing carbon dioxide from seawater and the atmosphere. Ocean forests may store as much carbon as the Amazon rainforest, according to one analysis.

Yet there is still a sizeable gap in understanding of seaweed’s long-term ability to sequester carbon, because it lacks a root system to lock the carbon into the ground, unlike other marine plants such as mangroves and seagrass. Whether carbon stays locked up also depends on what happens to the seaweed, and there is still scientific debate on how effective it is at storing the element.

Marine ecologist Dr Karen Filbee-Dexter, one of the study’s 10 authors, said the research was a “major step forward” in understanding the potential role that seaweed can play in mitigating climate breakdown, “because it calculates the productivity – growth and carbon uptake – of the largest marine vegetated ecosystem”. It can also help estimate the carbon-sink potential of the world’s marine forests, she added.

Kelp, the largest seaweed species, able to grow tens of metres high, also plays a vital role in marine ecosystems, providing food and shelter for fish, other marine animals and birds.

In Australia, native kelp is home to the weedy seadragon – a purple-hued creature with leaf-like appendages that look like kelp fronds – which only lives along the country’s coastline. Kelp forests along North America’s Pacific coast provide vital habitats for southern sea otters. In addition, the mighty grey whale uses kelp forests as a haven from predatory killer whales and as vital feeding grounds for their young during their migration to Alaska waters from Baja California in Mexico.

Underwater forests could also have a role in efforts to alleviate the world’s food security crisis, thanks to their rapid growth.

The scientists examined hundreds of individual studies from around the world where seaweed growth had been measured by scuba divers. “We found ocean forests are more productive than many intensely farmed crops such as wheat, rice and corn,” the study noted. It defined productivity in terms of how much biomass – the fronds, stipes and holdfasts of the seaweed – was produced by crops and seaweed.

On average, ocean forests in temperate regions, such as Australia’s southern coast, produced between two and 11 times more biomass by area than intensely farmed crops, a productivity that could be harnessed for the food system.

Seaweed has been mass-consumed in Asia for centuries, and now western markets are catching on, albeit on a small scale, with more European and North American companies manufacturing seaweed products for human consumption. The Cornish Seaweed Company has a seaweed salad range; Marks & Spencer has a “coconut seaweed crunch” snack, and there are numerous lines of kelp burgers.

“Although there is evidence of seaweed being consumed as food 14,500 years ago, it has not been a part of the diet for large swaths of the world’s population,” says marine biologist Amanda Swinimer, who has been wild harvesting seaweed for decades through her company, Dakini Tidal Wilds.

However, she adds, as food security becomes more of an issue, “people are looking for other sources of nutritious food. If harvested properly, seaweeds have the potential to be a very sustainable and nutrient-dense food source.” Seaweed is also being used as animal feed, in place of corn and soya beans, thanks to its high nutritional value.

Yet these underwater forests face multiple threats, including rising sea temperatures, pollution and invasive species. Along the northern California coast, kelp has declined by more than 95% over the past several years, decimated by sea urchins – whose population has exploded as vast numbers of starfish, their main predators, have been killed by a wasting disease linked to warming waters.

The Great Southern Reef along Australia’s coastline, and forests in the north-west Atlantic, along the coasts of Maine, Canada and Greenland, are also showing concerning signs of decline.

Seaweed forests are often overlooked and less studied compared with coral reefs, making it difficult to understand how they are changing. “Most of the world’s seaweed forests are not even mapped, much less monitored,” says Filbee-Dexter. While corals are found in warm, calm and easily accessible areas, making them fairly easy to study, kelp is in cold waters on some of the choppiest, roughest coasts in the world.

Seaweed farming in Sweden could be a vital component of the shift away from eating meat for protein.

Filbee-Dexter believes that the more scientists understand about these vital but fragile marine ecosystems, the easier it will be to help them survive. “I hope that more awareness about these forests will lead to more protection and restoration.”

In California, Hurd continues to dive among the kelp forests, monitoring their progress and hoping their decline can be stemmed. “The loss of these incredibly productive ecosystems is devastating for both nature and people,” he says. However, as science continues to develop smarter technologies to track kelp, such as drones, satellites and AI, he remains hopeful that research can shed light on the role of kelp in fighting climate breakdown.

“The one thing that kelp in particular should never be underestimated for is the productivity and biodiversity it supports around the world. It should be protected and restored with a great sense of urgency.”

Tour Divide Day 9: Today begins with a long paved section. I know I’m out here doing a gravel bikepacking race, but I appreciate the pavement miles whenever they come (just don’t tell any of my new badass Tour Divide friends, or they won’t think I’m cool). Emerging from a forested section, I can see the Teton Range in the distance on the other side of the Idaho-Wyoming border. This next stretch of the route is my final chance to see a Grizzly bear before passing through the Great Divide Basin (aka the Great Grizzly Filter). No Grizzlies, but I do spy a fox in a field which I take as a good omen. I’m a fan of foxes - I couldn’t tell you why. The route hits the pavement as it rounds the north end of Grand Teton National Park and heads down the eastern side of Jackson Lake before turning east toward Togwotee Pass. This is the busiest road the route has been on thus far and is hopefully the busiest we’ll have to contend with. Despite my appreciation of the pavement miles, cars rocketing past me with seemingly no regard for my life rob the miles of their benefits. This might be the longest paved section of the entire ride. The next objective after Togwotee Pass is Union Pass. As the sun sets, I find myself with three other riders heading up to the pass: @slingfin, @josephlfox, and Sam from Washington (are you out there, Sam?). We all camped at the same place last night and it looks like we’re all going to end up at the same place again tonight. It’s nice to have other riders around to push you sometimes. @slingfin Tim sees a cabin marked on the map, and we make this our goal for the night. We arrive after some surprise mud, some tricky navigation, and a lot of now-standard nighttime riding. Two northbound tourers had the same idea, and they’re already asleep inside (sorry for waking you up, friends). Inside, it’s a bit too moist and stuffy for my liking - and I only expect it to get worse with four additional bodies - so I opt to sleep on the porch (which, fortunately, is covered). Kayaker in Cuyahoga Falls dies

Tommy Piros, a kayaker who co-founded the Cuyahoga Falls Kayak Race seven years ago, passed away after suffering a head injury while cliff jumping in West Virginia. Piros, who grew up in North Olmsted and was involved in the whitewater community, was known for his sense of adventure and the paddling event he helped create. Piros was the co-founder of the Cuyahoga Falls Kayak Race, which took place on the Cuyahoga River. The event has returned as Cuyahoga Falls Fest for paddling athletes, which attracts around 30 of the best paddlers in the U.S. and between 800 to 1,000 spectators. Friends said Piros would always remember his talents on the river but also for his efforts to help others who enjoy kayaking.
