I think it goes deeper than that, as we've seen situations where even the people writing a new addition don't realize how important certain mechanics from a previous edition are.
For example both the rules and player base moved on from random encounters and dungeon crawling as the main focus of dungeons & dragons with third edition. Still very combat focused, possibly even more than previous editions, but with a lot more focus on story-driven play and epic adventures.
That meant that both published adventures from Wizards and people's home games stopped using random encounters, however this gave rise to the 15-minute work day and made Wizards far more powerful than previous editions. In previous editions because you didn't know when you could next rest you couldn't just go nuclear with your spells because that would be very very dangerous, it was as much a game of logistics as anything else.
However with the move to more cinematic play and set piece battles Wizards would feel fully justified in unleashing their full arsenal in every fight and then taking a rest between fights. Even in living grayhawk where I was playing you typically only had two fights per hour time slot, so you just were careful in the first fight and then went nuclear in the boss fight.
I think it's also important to point out that the playstyle has changed a lot over time, playing at the world talks about how the play style in Lake Geneva (Gygax, wargaming and logistics) was different from that in the twin cities (Arneson, more focused on acquiring ever greater levels of power and wealth, but also defending a city), and they told you so little about what they expected you to do that if you couldn't attend origins or chancon and play with one of the games creators, or someone who had played a game with one of the creators that play styles rapidly diverged and started evolving, particularly in California. A great source of this is Playing at the World, as it's read every scene and amateur press association publication that the author could get his hands on and apparently the publications coming out of places further away from the Midwest are quite different in tone and style then the original groups that founded in D&D. You have people wanting consistent story and themes and tone whereas the original D&D was full of fart jokes and anachronisms and so forth, it was just meant as a playful backdrop for wargaming and dungeon crawling.
Then you've got a move towards more narrative based adventures like Dragonlance, and so forth, I'm sure someone who knows more about the history of D&D than me could make a timeline of all the different play styles that have been popular over time.
I don't think people should use role-playing as a synonym for "social interaction." I've seen it used in published role-playing games and it's kinda funny cause it gives off the implication that outside of those scenes you're not role-playing.
I also don't think people should use role-playing as an antonym of "combat encounter." A combat encounter happening doesn't mean the role-playing stops. You're still in control of your cool wizard and making decisions for the wizard.
And I also don't think role-playing should be used exclusively to mean "speaking in first person as your character" or "getting in the head of your character." Neither of those things is antithetical to role-playing, but to imply that either is a requirement leaves out players who don't feel comfortable speaking in character for whatever reason and would rather describe their character's actions in third person, and some people rather play their characters from a more distant position, thinking in terms of "what would be the most entertaining or interesting thing for my character to do now" or purely approach their character as if they were a playing piece.

5th Annual Antigua Invitational to be played at Grayhawk
Antigua Group, Inc. announces the 5th Annual Antigua Invitational.
The 5th Annual Antigua Invitational will be played at the renowned Grayhawk Golf Club on Friday, September 7, 2018. This invitational brings together the golf community in Arizona pairing a club professional and amateurs in a unique three-person team format – (1 Pro, 2 Ams).
“This event is a great way for Antigua to say ‘Thank-You’ to those who support Antigua”, said Ron McPherson, President and CEO of The Antigua Group. “Like each of our prior years, we’re taking time to remember those lost on 9/11 as well as doing what we can to help the homeless veteran community in Arizona".
Each three-person team will be paired with another, and the groups play in six-balls. The event also has a competition within a tournament featuring members of the Phoenix Thunderbirds (The Waste Management Phoenix Open hosts) squaring off in a Ryder Cup style competition against the Scottsdale Charros (hosts of Spring Training baseball at Scottsdale Stadium). The Thunderbirds are prohibitive favorites, but the real winner is the local charities benefitting from the event.
At the conclusion of golf, all participants will congregate for the famous “Dry Heave closest to the pin contest, food, drink, music, great camaraderie and awarding of prizes.
