Aaand... finished?!
Maybe I'll tinker with it some more later on when I have fresh eyes, but let's call it tentatively finished for now.

Hello! I saw your post on rain gardens and assorted topics and I would love to know more. I recently moved to a several acre property my parents recently purchased and there are two boggy patches we want to rewetland. Legally, they are classified as 'poorly draining soil', but the previous owners filled in a cattle pond and there's still evidence of soggy tolerant plants hanging on despite their attempts at leveling. We'd like to put in the pond again but with more focus on wild animals and native plants this time. (I want camas and frogs!)
I'm in Oregon, have access to summer irrigation water with very little agricultural runoff, and we have a modest budget for digging equipment and plants and help, but we're not sure where to look for information on how to do this right. Do you have any suggestions or resources for this? Most of the info I've found is for cattle ponds, decorative non-native ponds, and edible fish stocked ponds. No one seems to WANT frogs.
Thank you for any help!
Sorry about the delayed response, I wanted to do some research before replying but I’m having a long Covid flair and need to limit my computer time. I’ll return to this in a week or two if I can, but in the meantime here’s some very generic advice. (I live in the Northeast and most of my knowledge/resources are local.)
Like I said in my previous post, the first step in wetland restoration is restoring the hydrology. This can be very site specific! But since you know the cattle pond was filled, you already know where the water was, and likely wants to be again - therefor I’d start by digging up that area or a place nearby. You can probably use the initial construction steps for cattle ponds etc when laying out the pond. The main change will be for step 2: adding native plants! This will require some research to find native plant nurseries and/or organizations - conservation groups like Audubon or the Nature Conservancy should be able to point you in the right direction. You can also try contacting the botany and/or ecology professors at your local university.
As to the frogs - if you provide a source of fresh water + native plants, they will come. My grandparents had a small, decorative pond and it was packed full of frogs, at least until a local heron started visiting for breakfast. (Okay, final advice is to have enough vegetation so the frogs can hide!)
Best of luck! :)
