My Career Troubles
Throughout my life I have had trouble with my career choices. During my early elementary school years, I obviously had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. It was only around the fourth grade that I began taking my own aspirations somewhat seriously. Throughout the rest of my time in elementary school and middle school, I had a lot of different career aspirations: Detective, archaeologist, music producer, photographer, cook, restaurant manager, and seaman. Those last two were the results of taking a career aptitude test. However, it was not until late into my second semester of the eighth grade that I thought I realized what I should be: a video game writer.
Well, not exactly. I wanted to be the person who came up with the ideas for video games, but I had no idea what title that person went by. I eventually learned that they were called a “game designer,” but then I found out that “designer” is what every member of the development team is called, and then I found out that the person in charge of a game’s development is called the director”. However, the idea for a game doesn’t always come from the director—it can come from any member of the development. Besides, “video game director” is a position you have to be promoted to, so I would have to start as something else.
Unfortunately, I did not learn most of this until the twelfth grade. I think I was late into the school year too by this time. I tried finding as much information as I could throughout high school, but it was not until I was about to graduate that I found anything that was actually helpful. Also, there are barely any video game companies in the state I grew up in. The number one problem is that this type of career goal requires a good fallback or backup career; although I feel like everyone should have some sort of backup for their primary career goals, regardless of what those goals are. This lack of a secondary career path led to one of the biggest mistakes in my life: rushing into college.
I graduated from an online high school in August 2010, and then enrolled in college the very next month. I chose retail management as my major, thinking that I could pursue a career in selling video games as my backup for a career in creating video games. However, I badly needed a job to pay for tuition, and I eventually stopped doing my assignments to focus more on the job hunt. I really should have thought it over more. By the way, I promised myself that I would never, ever take out a loan in my entire life, so student loans were not an option for me. I loathe the idea of having to spend the rest my life paying back money.
Over a year after I first enrolled in college, I enrolled in a career school, choosing hotel/restaurant management as my major. This time, I did put a good amount of thought into this decision before going through with it, and I had help from family to pay for tuition. Then I had my first lesson. Right there, in the very first text that I was assigned to read, I was told that a diploma in hotel/restaurant management did not mean anything without some work experience. I should have switched majors right then and there, because it was basically telling me that this entire course was pointless, but no, I didn’t; I stuck with the course, earned my diploma, and then failed miserable at finding any sort of job at any hotel or restaurant. I think the biggest problems were that I had written that I would not cook meat in my resume, and that I lived in a town full of close-minded people who did not believe in online education.
At some point while reading this, you were probably thinking, “Why not aim for a degree in computer science? That way you could get a job as a video game programmer, and you would have computer skills that could get you jobs in several other industries as well.” That is because I hated computers, and did not want any job that revolved around them. However, in late 2012, I realized that computers are just going to become more and more important in every job out there, so I had to get more used to them. I decided to go all-in with this and re-enrolled in college for an associate of science in graphic design.
On December 3, 2015, after almost three years of College Take Two, I earned my degree; but there were two problems. Halfway through my course, I realized that I care way more about the stories and characters from my video game ideas than I did actual gameplay, and that I should be trying to turn my ideas into TV shows instead of video games. That’s actually how they started out, by the way. During the second half of elementary school, I began coming up with ideas for TV shows. Late into middle school, I imagined those shows getting video game adaptations. I then exclusively imaged them as video games. As a result, when thinking about what I should do for a career, I decided I should turn these imaginary games into reality. The second problem was that there was way less demand for graphic designers than I thought, at least where I lived. I pretty much had to apply to jobs out of state, but no-one was willing to do interviews over the phone or webcam. I couldn’t even get jobs in cities I could drive to, because I never got my driver’s license! I couldn’t, there was no-one to teach me and I hate driving!
It took so long to get hired for a job that was related to my field. I eventually got a work-from-home contract job as a photo editor, adding new backgrounds to pictures of cars and trucks so they could be used for advertisements. I hated this job. At first, it was OK. I was fine with it. Over time, I got better at it; but at some point, I peaked, and there were just not enough tasks for me to take. Not only was I never able to make enough money to move out and live on my own, but I eventually got worse at the job, which got more and more stressful as the solitude and monotony got to me.
After a year of working at this job, I decided that I needed a change in career. After three months of carefully thinking about it, I enrolled at my local community college to get a degree in therapeutic massage. Unfortunately, I was unwilling to ask my relatives to help me cover tuition again, and my photo editing job wasn’t paying enough to help, so I had to take out a student loan. I promised myself I would never take out a loan, and I broke that promise. To this day, I hate myself for doing that.
Towards the end of my first semester, I quit my job as a photo editor, which was negatively affecting my health. I got one A and three B’s for my first semester, but I dropped two of my second semester classes before it ended. I could no longer get a degree in massage therapy, but I could still get a vocational certificate. However, I had to transfer to another school in another state. I was homeless during my time at this college, and the massage therapy class was in danger of shutting down due to a lack of students. I liked massage therapy, but I had to drop out.
Now I’m living in Canada with my birth family, working another job I hate while waiting out a pandemic so I can find a job in retail or entertainment. There is a lesson here that I want everyone reading this to take away from my story: do your researching and think very carefully about what you want to do for a career. Do not rush into college before knowing what you want to study or what you want to do once you graduate. If you don’t know what to do by the time you finish high school, then take a year off; take two if you have to! Just don’t rush into your post-high school life, or you may just regret it.

Text for Professional Development Presentation
My academic and professional career in the arts really started in 2010, when I enrolled on the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Lincoln College, the city where I’m from. The specified, concentrated approach to studying - and practicing a range of creative subjects at the beginning of the course, opened my mind to what the next few years could look like for me. I had previously studied Photography and Product Design at A Level, but the Fine Art pathway on the Foundation excited me the most. Influenced by the Fine Art tutors and practitioners, my photography practice became more versatile and expansive, and questioned the nature of photography itself. Learning this about myself and my work, I applied to universities whose photography courses catered to those who wanted to practice photography as a fine art discipline.
I joined the BA Photography course at Camberwell College of Arts in 2011 and explored various concepts and movements that influenced modern and contemporary photography. Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes and On Photography by Susan Sontag changed the way I perceived photography and how I took photographs. While I was studying I began to experience an angst in which I felt like there was no meaning in my work and that it had no value outside of the aesthetic. During this period of personal crisis I looked to more vocational practices that seemed to offer more structure and conviction. I had been increasingly influenced by design objects and theory toward the end of the first year at Camberwell. I decided to alleviate the crisis of subjectivity and meaninglessness by changing to a Foundation Degree in Graphic Design - also at Camberwell.
The first year of the design course proved exciting and grounded in concrete principles that could be explored but not challenged to the point of meaninglessness. I mostly left my photography practice behind and began learning both the theory and application of design - as well as the tools that industry professionals used, primarily the Adobe Creative Suite. As I progressed into the second year of the course and gained more confidence I began to bring my photography skills into the work that I was producing. I started to find however, that the subjectivity that I was trying to turn away from in my photography practice was in fact a fundamental universal truth that seemed present in all facets of life. I began to accept the freedom that could be found in subjectivity and embraced it. This helped to improve my work and understand that my own ideas of perfection and what good creative practice was, were simply my thoughts and opinions and that that was perfectly fine.
I graduated from the design degree in 2014 and took a part-time job in a café while I worked on my portfolio. One of the significant projects that I developed during this period was a small photography zine which I initiated on a trip to Switzerland in 2014, and continued working on for the following year. The zine, Entre, featured editorial-style travel photography paired with typographic compositions of poetry relating to the subject matter. This project perfectly aligned both the open direction that my photography had taken and the precise nature of design that I’d studied in the previous years.
Fortuitously, the café I worked at offered to sell my zine and this led to me being offered an internship role at a company called Winkreative. Winkreative specialise in brand identity and editorial design, so I found the work incredibly compelling. In 2017, after assisting on projects for large global brands such as Lexus and Air Canada, I realised that working in the cultural sector still had a strong appeal to me, so I began to look for work which would fulfil this desire. I eventually landed a full-time job at a small design studio called Praline in 2018. Praline specialise in branding and marketing in the cultural sector.
While at Praline I developed my skills as a designer but also implemented some of the creative freedom that I’d learned through the art based courses that I’d studied on. I worked on projects for galleries such as Waddington Custot and Blaine|Southern, designing a book for Ali Banisadr and exhibition materials for a Jedd Novatt show. Working as a designer for several years—particularly for cultural sector clients—gave me a broader understanding of the industry and of the various practices that I engaged in. I was able to see the professional lives of architects and artists up close, learning about and engaging with their practises as the projects progressed. This close-knit study of a variety of practitioners has certainly influenced my own artistic practice as well as my design practice.
During the first lockdown in 2020 I decided to return to university to top up my Foundation Degree to a full BA. I knew that having a bachelors degree would improve my future career prospects and I’d also been thinking of making a career change. I got accepted on to the Fine Art degree course at London Met and began my studies in October 2020. The course entailed more teaching and contact hours than I had initially expected which helped me to progress quickly and assimilate onto the course in a straightforward manner. I was disappointed however when the university was forced to close quite early on due to COVID.
One of the main things I’d been looking forward to in returning to university was the access to studio space and workshops. I had wanted to explore woodworking in the workshops and make use of the photography dark rooms, neither of which I’ve had a chance to access until only a few weeks ago - by which point it was too late as my major project had been forced to take a different direction. The first semester was mainly centred around lectures and seminars and had a focus on the critical and contextual studies module. While researching for my dissertation topic I discovered that I enjoyed researching a variety of topics and began to approach my major project from a research-based perspective, which lead me to some interesting areas to create responses to.
Initially I was experimenting with analogue photography, taking photographs on my medium format camera, a Mamiya 645. There was potential to develop the project using analogue media, but due to the university facilities being closed, I decided not to continue experimenting with this format as there were now too many constraints in place. I knew that if I could start experimenting with digital technology and online methods of display, that there would be more scope for the project at large. I also decided that because my research had started to broach the subject of digitality, that using digital media to explore this subject would be most suitable.
My current practice explores a compass which spans the phenomenon of digitality and notions of wilderness. I defined digitality as “humanity’s march toward a complete reliance on digital mechanisms—particularly those connected to the internet—without regard for the social, environmental, economic or political consequences.” Wilderness on the other hand, can be defined as a region which is uncultivated, uninhabited and inhospitable. My major project, Digitality Contra Wilderness is a cinematic display of my research findings via video, audio and motion graphic media. This work delves into the environmentalist paradigm perpetuated by movements such as Extinction Rebellion and figures like David Attenborough and my research examines the current generational zeitgeist of conservation, rewilding and the ecological footprint.
My major project therefore follows the late twentieth century artists who formerly addressed such topics, namely; Fluxus artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986), the Land Art pioneer Richard Long (b.1945), and the Land Art reactionist Hamish Fulton (b.1946). Contemporary inspirations include film maker John Rogers (b.1962) and 3D animation artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen (b. 1987). These artists challenge convention by employing the social media websites YouTube and Twitch respectively to display their work. I have incorporated some of the techniques used in rapid prototyping to generate moving image sketches from content found online. I have utilised the latest video-editing software such as Adobe After Effects and Quick Time Screen Recording to translate visual research into imagery. I intend to present the resolved works on a variety of platforms. Firstly, on Kunstmatrix so that my work is exhibited alongside other students in my year group. Secondly, on Twitch, which I deem to be the most relevant space for this work as it currently stands. And thirdly, on my artist website so that it can be seen as part of a broader portfolio of works in the future.

Gemma Leslie has a strategic brain, balanced by a creative heart. It’s easy to see why working for Lucy Folk, a local brand with a global following that is constantly pushing the boundaries of design and retail, is the perfect place for these skills to flourish.
As a ‘super hands-on learner’, Gemma decided to pursue TAFE out of high school, where she applied for a Diploma of Business and Public Relations. It was here she figured out that the creative side of things was more her jam (although, her Mum already knew that, when Gemma started making fake IDs for the family dog at age 10 – more on that later!).
Halfway through the course she wrote a ‘spontaneous’ application to go study abroad – ‘I wanted to go literally anywhere’, Gemma says! Her ‘anywhere’ turned out to be Calgary in Canada, where she studied Journalism with a major in Photography. When Gemma came home, she was hungry for more creativity, and went on to study a Bachelor of Communications majoring in Design – a course that gave her ‘the knowledge and tools to achieve my dream of working as a graphic designer specialising in the fashion industry’.
Since then, Gemma has gone on to intern and work at some major fashion and lifestyle brands – her impressive resume includes FAT, Handsom, Búl, Modern Times, Manon bis, and even the launch of her own French bed linen label, Scottie Store.
But it’s in her current role that Gemma has found her Dream Job – where creativity, kindness, and an honest passion for all things Lucy Folk drives her day-to-day!
The most important verb in the get-your-dream-job-lexicon is…
Learn!
I landed this job by…
There’s no romantic story here. I applied for the Lucy Folk role on a whim following a conversation with a friend who had worked there. I wasn’t even really looking for a role, but I went through the application and interview process for an E-commerce Coordinator role. The more I learned about the brand, the more I felt drawn to it. Lucy Folk herself actually did my second-round interview – it was a bit random because it was in the back courtyard of a record store in Collingwood! I was on my lunch break and it was a 45-degree summer day.
I started a couple of weeks later, and spent two years in this role before being promoted. I was fortunate enough to be offered the Marketing Manager position a year ago and whilst it’s been a huge learning curve so far, it’s been truly amazing.
A typical day for me involves…
I have no morning rituals. My partner, Mike, would tell you that a typical day begins with me asking him to put the coffee on while I decide what to wear. I never know how I’m going to feel in the morning, so I don’t choose an outfit until I rise – it drives him mad.
Typical isn’t a word anyone should associate with Lucy Folk! Our CEO, Di Laws, and Creative Director Lucy challenge us to think about how we can better connect with our customers through communications, our product and customer service both in-store and online, and generally, to think differently!
Some days I try and get to our beautiful store at Crossley Street, it’s always great to start the day with a Pellegrini’s espresso – I enjoy the theatre of it! For most other days, it starts at our Head Office. The first thing I do is make a coffee for our jewellers – I do the rounds, walk through The Salon, have a few meetings here and there (or sometimes not!,) and cover the lunch break in the Lucy Folk Salon on Thursdays.
As marketing manager, I am usually across several different projects at one time. The only constant is ensuring I am connected across the entire Lucy Folk team, so that I understand what our customers want and how best we coordinate our product and campaign launches.
The most rewarding part of my job is…
I love seeing how our customers react to what we do. So many of them are genuinely excited when we launch a new product or campaign. Knowing that I contribute to making customers feel excited and happy while developing a connection with the Lucy Folk brand, is rewarding.
I also love the story behind our products. It’s amazing to work for a company that enables so many artisans across the world to make the things they do – from the handwoven clothes in Morocco, to our eyewear in Italy, and beautiful jewels here in Melbourne.
And lastly, the learning curve. I feel like I have worked through a degree in the past year!
On the other hand, the most challenging part is…
Strangely this is linked to another rewarding aspect. Being a small to medium-sized business, you’re required to undertake lots of different roles and learn a lot of different skills. From managing people and budgets to developing brand loyalty, there’s no shortage of things to do.
The biggest challenge I face is balancing all of these things while trying to push the boundaries creatively.
The culture of my workplace is…
On show for everyone to see.
You see it in our product, our campaigns and in our stores. We have fun. There’s a big emphasis on enjoying coming to work.
What makes Lucy Folk a special place is the passion the team has for the brand. We’re all devotees – we love Lucy’s vision and style. She’s so talented!
Lucy and Di [Lucy Folk’s CEO] are always challenging us to think outside the box. Balanced with that is a focus on discipline – making sure we all understand how the business operates and what it takes to keep being successful.
When I was younger I wanted to be…
I had to ask my Mum this question … she said that I wanted to be lots of things. In my memory, I just wanted to be what my older brothers wanted to be (a basketball player). But she knew I was heading down a creative path when I was making beautifully designed fake IDs for my dog, designing and painting my room half sunflower yellow and half-burnt orange, ripping up the carpet and sanding the floorboards myself – and I was only 10 years old.
I think the highlight of my junior graphic design career was designing my school yearbook in grade 1.
The best piece of advice I’ve received is…
I tend to focus more on behaviours and role models rather than advice.
The biggest impression that’s been left on me is the importance of respecting and helping others, even when you don’t feel you have the time or headspace to do so. I think it’s important to be kind and to help others. That rubs off on people and makes for a more accepting world (and workplace).
That said, if I were to choose a piece of advice it would be, ‘it’s what you do next’, which is some advice that our CEO Di gives me daily. Whether it be in business, or even just your personal life.
Over the years, Lucy Folk has evolved by…
The business has matured and become more focussed. Importantly the culture has evolved with that. It’s not like we’ve become serious, but we have become more disciplined. I love that. We now have the best of both worlds – we get to have fun, be super creative and be part of an exciting, growing business.
We’re still a small business, and we want to focus on doing things differently and doing them well. The landscape of retail has changed, so we are working hard to adapt and change with it along the way. Our mantra is ‘Be the Change’.
In the next five years, I’d like to..
There is so much! I have so many things to learn and achieve in a professional environment. I learn through the experience of getting my hands dirty, pushing the boundaries and most of all working with others. I’m excited about the idea of that … and I hope to learn new tricks, new lessons along the way.
Apart from developing professionally, I think it’s SO important for me to develop creativity in my personal life. Travel more, see more, read more, meet new faces, less screen time (unless it’s a movie!), more doing time!

Something to get out my chest
I’m probably going to delete this later and I just need to get this out my chest because I have been bottling it up for a long while and if I do blurt it to said certain family members I know I would regret saying what I said. Although talking to the void is probably not a good idea but seems a better place to vent than exploding in rage by venting my frustrations in real life and I have nothing to lose just saying this here. I'd be doing vent art to express this but it seems I don't have the energy to do ambitious works (well at least I have a bit of energy to do little doodles) anyways where shall I start? I might ramble off topic here and there so bare with me. And this is gonna be long.....
I love to draw and write the characters and worlds I create in my world and the only person who knows what are in these worlds and these characters is myself and well someone has to make them. I have been drawing since I can remember holding a pencil. My mind back then and now is always filled to the brim with ideas and concepts I'm dying to put on paper. Most of these works are unfinished and the only finished work I have to offer was a shameless self-insert fanfiction but that is another story. The earliest I can remember is at 10-11 I made my own fantasy and all over the place story and mind you it sucks but it was the forerunner of all my original stories that influenced my work now. I like all artists have our beginnings somewhere and well that is where I started my road into creating stories and art for the worlds I create.
This is what makes me happy or my happy place. I'd be content to spend my days working on my stories and art. During my teen years onwards I basically did that obviously while balancing school, social life (or my lack of it), and family life. It was great, and although I had difficulty balancing that when I first got to college I still managed. Then things changed, family stuff added along with stressing over course work really did a number on me emotionally and maybe mentally, well whatever it was it was the result of me failing a semester and having to redo it twice before I can finally move on to my final semester. Despite what I have gone through I was ecstatic I finally graduated completing my Independent Illustration diploma in college that was late 2013 to early 2014 when that happened.
You’d think I’d work out something like build a better portfolio so I can network myself or take up my learning to the next level but nope I was an idiot back then and still feel like it now because of my choices. Instead, I was scared what my future holds out for me I feel like now that I finished this stage of my learning that the sky’s the limit that I can do anything my heart desires and nothing can stop that. Then I forgot I have obligations to my family, I still live with them and I have no shame in that (after all life is difficult living on your own in these times now especially) also, for now, that is the only choice I have.
So after graduation, my family finally got the okay from the government to get our Canadian citizenships which was about damn time considering we stayed in this country as immigrants for like almost a decade and other than me graduating art school, I get to finally get my citizenship. After our ceremony, my dad announced for a bullshit reason that he is taking me, my sister, my mom, and niece to Dubai because my mom has to sign some important paper (spoiler alert there is no paper signed at all and it was all a lie my father gave us to come). So what did I do instead of working on a portfolio or something? I spent all of 2014 being anxious, I was not proud of what I choose to do instead of doing the smart thing.
I basically accepted my fate this is what's going to happen. I literally left Canada on New Year’s Eve and spent the first 3 months of 2015 away from home. A huge chunk of my “vacation” was spent in Kuwait, trapped in a hotel with my mom, sister, and niece. It was a nightmare and I never want that to happen again I did get to go places but 90% I was stuck in that damned hotel (why we were in there is a personal reason I will not disclose). The only thing that is good with this trip is my week in Thailand with my family and although I got sick there I enjoyed this part of the vacation a lot more than being trapped in a hotel in Kuwait. I did manage to do some of my art at least during these 3 months but was not a lot like I hoped for.
But ever since that trip I guess it kinda changed me a bit. I don’t consider myself a positive person heck I’m mostly negative I at least try to be optimistic. Now I just accept that my life is probably not going to be what I hope it will be. And I get it life happens and the plans you make for yourself do not always go the way you want and sometimes it is a good thing cause it may be a better path to some or not to others. I should know I went from being an illustration student to a NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) to a Liberal Arts Student so yes life works in mysterious ways.
Liberal Arts was a different territory to art courses considering its essays, readings, tests, quizzes, etc it was hard I must say I spent half my time crying over my homework and lamenting if I failed or not (although that seems to have worked wonders into getting passing grades and up). But I enjoy these classes and I do want to open my horizons to learning and hey maybe find some inspiration along the way. I already finished my second semester and currently waiting with anticipation for my final grades so wish me luck I survived the semester with passing colors. I also thought I can go back to balancing my school work and my art like I always had done. Then I forgot I have family obligations/contributions I must do. Not that I do not mind but these drain up my mental energy and by the time I am not needed I just can’t really bring myself to pick up a pencil and draw. Whatever I have time left before I sleep is stare at youtube videos and reblogging stuff online because that's how mentally tired and worthless I feel.
When I finally do have the time to actually pick up a pencil and draw 70% of the time I choose to procrastinate because I believe I’ll just be called over by the family for certain responsibilities and I’ll never get the peace and quiet I need to just do what I love and am passionate about. It's always the same cycle ever since then. I just hope there will be that window of opportunity where I have all the time I needed to just draw and maybe write and that one opportunity I had was taken away from me. Well, it won’t be for forever cause there will be more opportunities for me to actually get my lazy ass to draw maybe write. It's just that I am sick and tired of having my time taken away from me and I am mad at myself for being a doormat. But I’m just scared of feeling that I am selfish for wanting that and maybe it’s time I stop that and it will be hard for me to get over. I coped with this by blaming my problems on my family saying its their fault they did this to me (it is obviously not true but it's a way I made myself feel better and denying that this is mostly my doing) I now know it's futile projecting this because in the end, I myself have to make time for myself to do the things I am passionate about. I’ve grown quite resentful and I don’t want to become this bitter person in the future who felt like her life got wasted because she made herself a doormat to please her family or scared of her future. I envy you artists out there who have all the time in the world to make creative original (as well as fan work) content without having to deal with the roadblocks in life and being in charge of your lives. I just want to say that you have to cherish the time you make for yourself to be creative you never know what will happen and before you know it *poof* you hardly have the time. Don’t ever take it for granted like I have.
Art means a lot to me and I feel like I disappointed myself and I feel like I don’t deserve to hang my illustration diploma because I fee like an imposter and felt like I wasted my years being scared of my future so much so that I got to the point where I feel I went to the point of no return. It makes me feel like maybe I should just give up on art and forget about all those worlds and characters I created like whats the use of being creative when life got you by the ankles and refused to let go. As much as I am in such a negative state of mind refuse to outright throw away everything I hold dear and give in the mediocracy of life dragging me away. I don’t want to be discouraged ever again, I want to be sure that this time this is what I want to do with my life whether I go to study graphic design, or go big with my art or even have a typical 9-5 job but still able to find the time to do art and/or write. This is my life and maybe right now the time for doing what I love is not in my future at the moment but its still going to be there for me when I come back.
And I just want to say and I know I do not need to apologize to my followers I’m sorry if you followed me for the art and hardly or never got any content since following me. As much as I would love to post as much of my originally content as possible well I have to deal with life and responsibilities some of that said responsibilities isn’t so supposed to be mine in the first place. I thank you to those who stuck by if anything I’ll try my best to make more content when that window of opportunity opens for me and you’ll bet your ass it will be a tidal wave of stuff.
But like I said life is strange sometimes, and I’m not about to give up just yet.
- signed a former illustration student trying to find her way
#personal#jehan speaks#jehan vents#confession#venting#artist problems I guess mixed in with life problems#I honestly feel better now I got this out of my system#I'll probably start bottling my emotions again after this but at least I'm starting at a blank slate#tldr: life kinda sucks for me atm but I am trying my damndest to get where I needed to be#so sit tight

Graphic Design in the Video Game Industry
Graphic Design is a generalized profession with the potential for near- limitless specialization. In essence, it serves as a toolset applicable to almost every industry. This blog will explore one of the many career opportunities – the video game industry. Between consoles, PC, and mobile there are more than three billion gamers around the world. In 2023, global gaming industry revenue is projected to surpass CAD 480 Billion. In comparison, for 2022, the combined global total for movies, television, music, and other forms of entertainment was only CAD 125 Billion roughly one-quarter of the size.
Whether you already have a Graphic Design Diploma Online, or are looking into Graphic Design Courses Online, securing a key role in the video game industry can be less than a year away. From marketing materials to concept art, your skills and natural talent might help drive the next big hit. Find out how Graphic Designers help to create virtual worlds right here!
The Evolution of Art in Gaming
Once upon a time, video game art was… limited. In the early years, characters were represented with blocky icons – something 16x16 pixels in size was fairly standard. In comparison, modern iPhone App icons are 180x180 pixels in size. Since the in-game visuals were severely lacking, it fell to artists to inspire gamers’ imaginations with unique cover art, logos, magazine ads, and more.
Denis Loubet is one of many notable and highly respected industry veterans. He is best known for his invaluable contributions to the Ultima and Wing Commander series from Origin Systems. Since his gaming debut in 1980, he has created artwork for almost a hundred different games. Cover art, logos, concept art, marketing materials, pixel art, 3D models… Denis has done it all.
The term Graphic Design is commonly traced back to 1922 as a process of combining typesetting, illustration, and design. The most notable changes over the decades have been in the techniques used by creatives. In his earlier years, most of Denis’ work was sketched on paper or painted on canvas. As the technology evolved, his more recent creations have shifted primarily digitally.
Digital designs offer numerous convenient benefits including dynamic layering of line art, coloring, shading, and backgrounds. It also allows for easier adjustments and more efficient repurposing of assets. You can become a Graphic Designer online to learn all the essential principles of Graphic Design.
Multimedia Empires
Video game adaptations were once predictable abominations – in both directions. The 1982 video game based on E.T. was so unplayable that Atari buried hundreds of thousands of its cartridges in a New Mexico landfill. Game- to- movie conversions were no better with atrocities like House of the Dead by German “filmmaker” Uwe Boll.
Times have changed. The Super Mario Bros Movie grossed over $1.3 Billion worldwide, ranking it as the second-highest animated film of all time. The Witcher began as a series of Polish novels, but it was the visually stunning video game adaptations that gained attention worldwide. Its popularity continued to grow with the successful launch of the Netflix TV series.
The Last of Us is yet another great example of how graphic design breathed life into a franchise that transitioned from a popular game series to an equally popular TV series. From the original concept art onwards, the art team created a cohesive and memorable design for the characters and environments.
To create strong branding, Naughty Dog’s digital marketers ensured all of the marketing and merchandizing maintained the game’s aesthetic. In 2021, the game’s unique visual style was painstakingly recreated in locations across Alberta for the Netflix series. The efforts were well received and enjoyed universal acclaim from original game fans, general audiences, and critics alike.
The Major Players in Gaming
As of 2023, there are more than 2,800 active game studios in the USA alone. Not surprisingly, the heaviest hitters still include console giants Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. In Canada, some of the most notable game studios include BioWare, Electronic Arts, UbiSoft, Rockstar, WB Games, Eidos, Behaviour Interactive, Relic Entertainment, and Radical Entertainment.
While the USA and Japan are more commonly known as hubs for game development, a number of iconic AAA games were developed in Canada. Some of the country’s biggest hits include releases from Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, Deus Ex, and Call of Duty.
Final Thoughts
Graphic Design has the power to bring ideas to life in a unique way that resonates with audiences. Can you get a graphic design diploma online? You sure can. Are online graphic design courses worth it? Absolutely. Popular game franchises sell millions of copies worldwide, which can be incredible exposure for your digital creations.
