There are 3 different levels of granite. Level 1 (Low Grade Granite), Level 2 (Mid-Grade Level) and Level 3 + (High Grade Granite). The grade of the granite slab can be determined by colors, veins, pitting, marking, thickness, the number of soft materials it has, and the country where it was quarried.

LOW GRADE GRANITE

A low-grade granite slab is a thinner cut, usually about 3/8 inch, it usually requires a piece of plywood backing for more strength. Hey, can I ask what you use to stain some of your bones? Or are they stained at all? I'm very much a newbie at the whole bones thing but I'm hoping to try my hand at making a piece for myself.

I use black India (calligraphy) ink a lot. But your stains will depend on how well degreased the bones are. It will stain teeth as well so they should be removed before staining if you want them to remain their natural color. I have also used teas and red wine less often (usually only wine when we buy red wine that neither of us like). Some people have talked about using dark colored natural grape juice instead of wine to get the same result but I haven't personally tried it. Although - wine has sugar in it so it will stain and leave sugar crystals behind that look like natural glitter. They rub off but might be able to be kept on if you were to seal it with paint sealer. I'm unsure but I've been wanting to see if I could make something look like a druzy crystal with wine staining :P unfortunately we just keep drinking all the wine instead so that's an experiment for another day ~A lot of people also use coffee (probably makes them smell nice too!) and natural dyes from plants or berries - I have wanted to try blueberries because I used to use blueberry tea to get blue/purple stains but they faded to brown after a while. I have seen other people do this but I'm not sure if theirs did/didn't fade. I've used coffee to stain book pages and fabric scraps (like lace) make them look aged or burned or fit the general aesthetic of the rest of an art piece better since most of my art isn't like.. clean and pretty lol. I like India ink because it can be removed with rubbing alcohol. So you can create highlights or relatively easily undo mistakes with a q-tip and alcohol. I like to paint my skulls completely black first and then do the lighter reliefs by hand with rubbing alcohol. It still stains the bone so you rarely will get stark white highlights after painting it black but it'll still be pretty light if you continue to go over the same areas over and over. I used this technique on my recent pieces including that cat skull candle and the geode fox skull. My boyfriend actually taught me this technique and I just sort of advanced it. It was a happy accident but my new favorite technique because I like how controlled it is. I imagine the same effects could be achieved in theory with other colored inks but I haven't tried yet so I cant say. My boyfriend prefers staining with diluted ink because it comes out unpredictably and he likes to create his art chaotically and unplanned (I like that we're different in this - makes collaborating with each other really interesting). I also like to use ink in a zip-loc bag with large bones inside like deer vertebra because you can rotate the bag every few hours and get uneven stains that create lines and lights and darks that are more drastic. Some of these stains come out like granite or stone and I really like that, personally. You have to make sure to only fill the bag about 1/3 or half way at most so that the bone isn't completely submerged the entire time to create uneven stain lines where the ink settles in different places over and over. I've also utilized ink's natural path that follows water by using a clean paint brush to "brush on" the general area I want the ink to run with water first (if I don't like it.. I just rub it off before actually staining any color onto the bone). Then take another brush with ink on it and tap it into that brushed on path I just made to get a gradient "dripping" look. I know lots of other artists use different staining methods in different ways so anyone can feel free to reblog to add onto this - im answering from mobile so I can't attach pictures but all my aforementioned examples are recent posts. Sorry I rambled here. But for the most part I use ink and just use it in many different ways :P they all come out with different stains - it's fun to experiment.
